Injuries Taking Toll on Jets

Here’s a few players that the Jets have shelved with injuries right now that bears watching closely this week.

ILB David Harris — Harris who has had nagging injuries all season had a groin injury Sunday. He had an MRI exam Monday; and there’s been on announcement made on his status.  Harris left the game in the second quarter when falling oddly during a tackle.

S Eric Smith — Smith has had too many head injuries in too short a time.  Sunday was his third in just a few weeks.  I know Mangini loves his Boy Scouts, but Smith is a liability, and now his health is too.  He’s not very good anyway, sit him down forDavid Barrett or someone else.

TE Chris Baker — It’s unknown his status for the game this weekend.  His hip flared up pre-game and the Jets didn’t really have a contingency with Franks already sidelined, Dearth injury prone and needed to long-snap and Keller not a true blocking tight end.  I expect he’ll  be back but keep an eye on this.

TE Bubba Franks — I would not expect to see Franks back this week, as his groin injury would likely keep him inactive for a few weeks.

RB Jesse Chatman — Chatman’s spot will have to be replaced on the roster.  Mangini didn’t mince words yesterday saying that “it doesn’t look real good.  Odds are, it’s going to be season-ending.” Chatman was injured blocking for Leon Washington during a kickoff in the fourth quarter in Sunday’s win over the Chiefs.

K Mike Nugent –No update here yet.  Basically if Jay Feely isn’t announced as a cut tomorrow, it will be yet another week.  I don’t get holding a roster spot for a kicker for almost half the season.  If the Jets have such delusions of need clutch kicks in the postseason, they’d be better off giving another

  1. We need Baker and Harris on Sunday.

  2. We loose speed on “D” if Harris can’t play…..The Bill game is a must win!

  3. Cody Spencer sucks, we need Harris out there, i dont care about any of the other injuries.

  4. If you care about the running game you want Baker too.

  5. Baker’s key, but our defense is dramatically worse without Harris. Really hope he can make it Sunday.

  6. Ted Cottrell just got fired. Theres a possible D coordinator should we find ourselves interested in putting on a retread.

  7. JAGG: Please tell me you’re being sarcastic.

  8. With exception of K. Rhodes missing David Harris is a huge nightmare for this defense. The level of talent behind those 2 guys is so much worse than any other position on D…. Cody Spencer is a glorified ST player. He has no business being on the field. If Harris cannot go prepare for M Lynch to have a very big day .

  9. Ted Cotrell??? Is that a joke?

  10. Hey just saying. Guy runs a 3-4. We have a 3-4. I wouldn’t make the call to get him. Just thought I’d share his availability.

  11. Oh and Bowens would replace Harris. Spencer is his relief

  12. did you guys watch the game?? Bowens came in and played decently.

Dont get me wrong we will miss Harris/

they better start subbing in our fn first round draft pick to play some mlb this week of practice let the kid see the field i dont care at what position we need more depth on the field if harris is out

  13. Bowens was decent at ILB? When? Our defense in the flat turns to mush without DH.

  14. Bowens plays much better outside then inside. As to Gholston he cant crack the lineup playing outside he has zero chance filling in for Harris. If Harris is out were are going to get cooked in the running game

  15. I thought Bowens was okay, too. Don’t get me wrong, he’s no Harris, but he’s not a bad single game replacement. He even defended a pass decently before the Chiefs kicked the FG. Spencer looked a little too amped out there, he was great in pre-season. Here’s when VG’s slow start hurts because BT could switch to the strong side (which he’s played before), VG replaces BT and Pace plays ILB for Harris (on the strong side) and Barton plays weak side (which he’s played before).

Here’s an idea for TE. Have Richardson play TE and activate Caulcrick from the practice squad to replace Chatman.

  16. BTW, Cottrell ran the 4-3 with the Jets, and his love for Sam Cowart (to play weakside OLB and who he coached at Buffalo) caused the FO to let Farrior go, one of the unsung blunders of the Harmway administration. Cottrell was awful.

  17. The Jets finally put Ainge on the IR. I wonder what this means? Signing an RB and a TE? An LB?

  18. I’m thankful we have Bowens to fill in for Harris (although I do prefer Harris)..could you imagine if Cody Spencer had to fill in? He can’t even play special teams properly as illustrated by him causing a touch back on that particular punt on Sunday. All he does is play special teams and he can’t do that well. He cost the team 18 yards in field position. Sorry, I just had to vent!

  19. Who are we going to sign off of the Patriots practice squad? lol

  20. we need harris and bake….big time

  21. Maybe Cottrell got canned, because he’s missing Shawn Merriman?

Likewise, our Sutton will look better with Harris in the line up as well as a couple blocking tight ends to help the O-line keep the defense off the field.

I’d like Rob Ryan, apparently Al Davis does too. Still, he’s a free agent next season.

  22. … also, replace Eric Smith with Abram Elam, not David Barrett. Of course, Mangini has his “tactical reasons” to play either Barrett or “Abe.”

  23. Bozzie, that play was terrible, but to be fair to Spencer he has been decent on coverage units.

I wonder if they’re considering whether to activate Cummings?

  24. I have read now that Harris has a hip injury. Now I hear it is a groin injury. Is this Mangini double speak? Which is it?

  25. For those of you speculating on who is going to be D co-ordinator next year, my guess is Dom Capers. Of course this means that Bill Cowhr will be our new head coach.

  26. What is Justin Miller’s status as a cornerback? Is anyone else worried about
    Lowery??

  27. Ed…initially it was reported as a hamstring. I don’t think it was ever a hip, although Baker and Franks both had hip problems.

Miller’s status at cornerback? Awful. Lowery is much better, even if he is getting picked on a bit now.

  28. Not worried about Lowery as I would Miller actually playing CB again for the Jets. Has anyone ever seen Miller actually make a play on defense? The guy is a classic underachiever. Lowery has made more plays in 7 seven games than Miller has his entire career. Miller is a downgrade believe me.

  29. Harris is essential for Sunday’s huge game, as he’s the best player on the second level. It would hurt to miss Baker, but I don’t think it will decide a football game.

More importantly, what the hell is wrong with Nugent? Can Favre have a talk with this guy about why its not ok to miss half a season with a hammy? This is absolutely absurd. I’d feel a little bit better about it if he’d been half the kicker he was at Ohip State, but he’s been demonstrably worse for no clear reason.

  30. Has Ainge been put on IR?? I hope so. Why the delay? Just in case Favre, KC and Ratliff get left at the airport. The kickers and our 4 QB roster spots have been a major blunder for this team. Almost no depth at MLB and OL but 7-8 spots for QB’s and kicking specialist?? Crazy

  31. Nugent or Feely whats the difference? They both miss kicks and scare the hell out of me anytime they line up for a FG. Release won of them already and get another RB on this team.

  32. Eric Smith is the worst safety starting in the NFL, did anyone see him blitz on Sunday, he was dancing with the blitz pickup. He also falls down in coverage more than anyone I’ve seen in recent memory. Harris is a big time run stuffer no matter if he struggles in pass coverage. Guy can flat out stop people. Marshawn Lynch is a handful. Green Guy I too would like Teddy Cotrell to come in and see if we can get some imagination in our 3-4. We need this game Sunday…anyone any thoughts on what RB we should pick up?

  33. Hot News-
    The geniuses have IR’d Ainge.

Boy it really helped keeping him on the roster for 8 weeks instead of an OL, RB or DB. Of course we could always add a kicker now.

  34. Bent, I was thinking the same exact thing. Cummings NEEDS to be signed to the 53-man, because, at the linebacker position, he is superior to Cody Spencer. Having that open spot, there is no better option than to call up Cummings as relief to the aging Bowens at LB. Cody Spencer is really only around for his special teams expertise, and nothing else.

Cummings would play a solid linebacker for the Jets should Harris be inactive this week.

  35. Yeah, I haven’t been impressed with Smith really, either. If it were up to me, I would like to see a little more Elam in there…

  36. In my opinion, Elam has been an absolute disgrace on the field. I watched him at the game on Sunday, the guy plays with a lot of heart, but he’s got a hot head and constantly overpursues in the backfield, finding himself wrapping his arms around a pillar of air or form tackling somebody’s shadow…that is, when he’s not knocking out his fellow Jets players (see last years Jets-Bills and Lee Evans 60 yrd TD) or flagrantly fouling WRs on crucial downs. I’d much rather see (wince) David Barrett starting at safety.

  37. Any rumours, hot stove report on how Tangini will replace Chatman?

  38. You guys need to stop with the Ted Cottrell garbage. We ran that guy outta here with pitchforks, why on earth would we take him back, especially when he just got fired for squatting all over SD’s defense?

Plus, I don’t think the problem’s with Sutton; it’s our vanilla offense and head coach who’s been subordinated to a senior QB and shivers in his undies when he has to face his (gasp) old boss in NE.

  39. caulcrick could replace chatman, elam replaces smith (hopefully permenantly),and i guess bowens or cummings replaces harris

  40. Please God Put Gholston at MLB and let him get a running start at stopping the run and playing coverage, because he is not adjusted to the speed of the game especially starting off the edge, I see his quickness when he’s out in open space, but not from the second the ball is hiked in a 3-pt. stance. I think Harris being down is a huge loss, but seriously with lack of depth now at the MLB position, Don’t get me started on Kody/Cody Spencer, not NFL talent to say the least, why not start the guy you drafted or at least work him in with Bowen who played well, but is a bit old and might not have the stamina to play every down at MLB.

1.Smith needs to go. Draft Taylor Mays (move up with 1st Rd.-er & Vilma Conditional, a probable 2nd Rd-er…haha draft already! I love it)
    2. Kris Jenkins is God.
    3. Revis, Lowery, Rhodes, LLP for life!
    4. Pace - worth every pennyyyy
    5. Favre, finally exciting to watch the Jets offense and not pray that it doesn’t mess up. Admit it, you’re excited as hell for Sunday to come.
    6. Sutton, BLITZ!!!!!
    7. Schotty - RUN, PLAY ACTION, YARDS AFTER THE CATCH! TOUCHDOWNS! NOT FIELD GOALS!
    8. O-Line, get healthier & more consistent, well done though, no ACL injuries down here in NY/NJ (haha)
    9. Dustin Keller - Favre needs to get him more involved
    10. Leon Washington/T.Jones - Great combo, just haven’t put up “great” games in the same game.

I love lists, but I love the JETS way more. J-E-T-S!. This week’s agenda: Trent Edwards looking at the sky all day long!

  41. LETS GO JETS MINUS FARVE!!!!!

  42. harris is a tackling machine, hes a must start this weekend! turner did a decent job filling in for baker, we can live without him this weekend, glad to see i wasn’t the only one holding in hard feelings about spencers spaztic touchback play, glad i got that out one less thing to tell my therapist about

  43. Bassett:

Buffalo has some Big boys up front. Possibly the biggest line in the NFL.

Edwards QB rating is sky high and Harris maybe out. Now is the time to start Venom next to Ellis on the 4-3 and get Bowens in Harris place. This will give us the most muscle out there and we are definitely going to need it

  44. guys buffalo won a game a few weeks ago without aaron schobel their best pass rusher. so you have to have guys step up when players get hurt. that’s football. more than any other sport. depth counts. i think we are in for a long day. with or without harris. this team has no culture. no identity. when you say, what do the jets do well, you have no answer. there just is no chemistry. i don’t see how they can win this week. we can’t protect favre that well, we can’t run consistently, we STINK versus the pass, and our game plans are HORRIFIC. and u guys know it.
all that aside, we are still 4-3, and playing for a playoff spot this week. amazing.
the only thing we can do well is stop the run( can’t remember the last time i said that), and anything involving leon washington. do you think he can get a few more touches schottie??
good luck this week boys. i’ll be rooting hard!!!

  45. [...] Brian Basset talks about how the injuries of linebacker David Harris, running back Jesse Chatman, and kicker Mike Nugent, and others’ injuries taking a toll on the Jets. [...]

  46. Dan Leberfeld (Jets Confidential) has a good suggestion - re-sign tight end Jason Pociask.

The other move is a coin toss between running back Jehuu Caulcrick or linebacker Kenwin Cummings from the practice squad.

Pociask and Caulcrick with Bowens playing ILB should get us through the week.

That said, I’m salivating over notion of Knowshon Marino or Ohio State’s Beanie Wells and ILB James Laurinaitis.

  47. Hank Hank Hanky my main man

You cant change the defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3 in a week. You can maybe put in a package but can’t play it as your base defense week 9. It would look worse than our offense does out there. Remember Herm his first year. The D-line run assignments completey change in terms of gaps and the way they get a push up front, not to mention the linebackers who have to play more sideline to sideline vs the run and pass. Remember B Thomas and C Pace were d ends who can play as linebackers in the 34, smaller faster linebackers like D Brooks and K Bulluck are needed to play a 43 .Although it would be interesting to see them rush four guys with there hand on the ground instead of that 3 or 2 garbage.Vernon Gholston is playing his senior year in the NFL, guy is not ready yet. Maybe someday but not this week my man

  48. No more posts asking for Ted Cottrell, please! Any other topic I will read with interest.

  49. Eddie DeGio:

Never said we should change to a BASE 4-3 D. If you remember Mangini used it on many occasions last year w/Robertson. This year w/ Jenkins needing to be double teamed, and the oustanding year Ellis is having getting to the QB means with Gohlston there Ellis will likely get lots ofdouble teams, and Gohlston finaly going one on one in his true position, and Bowens size and strength will be needed against the run, and the fact that Miami beat them by putting preassure on Edwards and last but not least ALL our muscle agaist them

  50. Hey Eddie Digio,

Didn’t we use Ellis at linebacker against the Steelers after the bye week last year. We won the game scheme oriented. This is the same way we beat buffalo in buffalo in 2006. We used a blitzing linebacking corps and we let Rhodes attack of the edge after running back in coverage. If Elam is able to help out Lowery in the deep ball then Rhodes should switch back to the ballhawk he once was. This week I expect if we are to win to win with a scheme because of the lack of depth at inside linebacker. Mangini always makes up in his weak areas by substituting his strengths which is why Thomas in 2006 played at weak linebacker. His sack numbers bloomed. From a defensive standpoint this week and considering that Joey Porter last week ran through all the offensive line that we should key on pressuring Edwards as much as possible because against the Dolphins defense which was not as superior as ours Edwards was rattled. Switching to the 4-3 and allowing Pace and Thomas to rotate at the outside positions while utilizing Gholston more will give the Jets defensive line especially Jenkins a chance to have help while effectly neutralizing the Bills chances of continuing long drives. If anyone knows the defensive side of the ball it is Mangini.

  51. Correction: I expect if we are to win we must win with a defensive shceme

  52. you know what i kind of agree with hank for once… i dont know much about defensive technicalities but what if we DID swtich sometimes to a 4-3 just to get gholston in there at DE? confuse the offense? of course just once in a blue moon but who knows? just an idea, not really saying it should be done

  53. Yes he did do it last year bc he had Vilma in the middle (prototype 4-3 MLB) before he got hurt and only bc Vilma bitched about the 3-4 from the jump. And muscle is great and all but it does not make a football player a la Tony Mandarich. Bowens is a big dude but does not have the sideline to sideline mobility needed to play the middle in the 4-3. Thats why u dont see 290 lbs MLB’s in the NFL. If it were that easy you could forego the draft and scouting process and pick up the biggest guy off the street this week and tell him “go tackle that guy”. Sorry doesnt work that way. Anyway if your Madden fantasy were to come true ,why would u go with Bowens as apposed to Barton who is a smart veteran LB . I like ya Hank, u got spunk and dont back down very easily. I dont mean to beat a dead horse but it just seems to me that your opinions reflect that of a guy that never suited up or has been around the inside of a football team, and that’s cool if thats the case. But just by the nature of your statements i think you make them to be just generally disagreable or out of sheer ignorance of the untrained football mind…

  54. DeGio:

Never claimed to have played Pro football or any other type except pick up games as a kid in the streets of NYC, midtown Manhattan to be exact in the late 50’s early 60’s so I’m probably older than you and if you continue in your condescending manner this discussion will be over. Also , I never professed to being as football wise or smarter than you or anyone here. I’m simply commentting as a diehard Jets fan from “the jump” on a football forum open to all types of football fans.

Sorry if Insult your football intelligence and your sophisticated “sideline to sideline” stuff however, ONE thing I have learned is that EVERYTHING starts with the trenches. That being said you completely ignored my “simple” very basic premise and comment that If we don’t preasure Edwards, like Miami, he WILL pick us appart and your “sohpitication ” along with it.

  55. Hey Arthur Fonzerelli,

That was a hybrid 4-3, 3-4, not a Tampa 4-3 which is the true 4-3. The thing with ellis was cool though. I did make a mistake though and thought that ur boyfriend was talking about a permanant switch to the 4-3. I also dont remember Mangini saying anything about switching to the 4-3 so I’ll go ahead and let him do his job, thanks for the advice Arthur. It all sounds so easy the way you put it. Guess we should have done that to San Diego and New England but maybe Mangini didn’t feel like covering up his weaknesses with his strengths like u said he ALWAYS does. You guys put alot of faith in guy who has ONE tackle in 7 games and probably should be in columbus right now trying to beat penn st. Please Fonzie, your blind to the fact that Mangini is losing his team and is 8-15 over the last 23 games, a little over 33%. He’s obviously forgetting to fill some holes You act like he’s Belichik or Parcells, he has earned a pass like that. Hate to break it but your boy is on the verge of becoming a laughing stock. The whispers are already starting and in the national media hes a one hit wonder. Please if your gonna try and make a point to me, dont use a meaningless win over a wild card team during a 4-12 season as a skidmark , i mean benchmark. Im finished with you so go tell Richie Potsy, Donny, Joanie and Chachi to go polish your leather jacket and boots. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY …homo

  56. Eddie C:

You agree with me ” for once “? ….You must be a Farve worshiper !!!

  57. Hank, sorry i dont know how Edwards will pick my “sophitication” apart, I dont coach the Jets and I dont play for them. With that said yes you are right putting pressure on the QB is important in stopping any teams offense, but my problem wasnt with that it was with switching to a 4-3, and the game most certainly starts in the trenches, just a note:
Sideline to sideline is a football term used to describe the ability of a defensive player to make tackles anywhere the ball is trying to be advanced starting from the hash area where the ball is spotted to either sideline.
You also should practice what you preach pal. Whenever you disagree with someone you believe your word is final. You cant see where anyone else is coming from and are generally just dimissive and disagreeable. You call people “simple”. You challenge people’s manhood accussing them of having “no cojones” and not “telling it like it is”. And frankly , I really dont care how old you are. I got a wife, kids and my own business the same way you probably do. We’re two grown men and your not my father so I’ll say whatever I want however I want. I havent threatened you or your family , I havent even cursed at you. So relax cause the only disagreement I have with you is football, which I take very seriously bc if it werent for it my family wouldnt have been able to afford to send me to college. I got a free education bc of it, it s my life.
Sorry if ur feelings got hurt

  58. Eddie, Eddie my boy:

See there you go again in your condescendig way, taking the high road, trying to let me know how little I know by explaining the term “sideline to sideline” when it’s obviously self explanatory, PAL. So I strongly suggest that you look at your own comments such as ” Whenever you disagree with someone you believe your word is final. You cant see where anyone else is coming from and are generally just dimissive and disagreeable. ” I made a suggestion, you wind up trying to teach me football, buddy.

I generally agreed with most of your comments. Sorry Eddie but Im not going to get into a pissing contest. This conversation is over.

  59. Eddie Digio,

You my friend have no hope as hank has completely “leveled” you with his argument. You are too anxious to get into an argument, wise words stay away man because you make matters worse for everyone especially with your LOVE ON FARVE!!!

    BRETT FARVE = HUGE LOSER!!!!!

  60. Fonzie,
Thank you for telling me what I should and shouldn’t do. Your a clown with the BRETT FAVRE= HUGE LOSER thing. What are you, seven years old? Dont tell me what to do, what to say ever cause you are just an annoying fool with a keyboard. You and hank are the butt of everyone’s jokes around here with your half brained football schemes. You guys remind me of the guys who call FAN and ask “what if the mets traded Aaron Hielman, Endy Chavez and Dioneer Sanchez for Matt Holliday” Don’t make me out to be a bad guy cause I dont have a problem with anybody else on this site except you two idiots.
It’s funny how everything we disagreed about the offensive direction is now coming out in the papers, with the players saying exactly what I said, word for word!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

  61. Hey Fonzerelli:

He is right. Stay away from TOPO GIGIO I mean DiGio.

  62. Hank your hopeless bitter old man with your stupid 60’s cartoon refrence. And if it’s refrence to my Italian heritage you crossed the line and exposed yourself as not only being out of touch but also a bigot

  63. Edie, Edie, Edie:

C’on man he wasn’t a cartoon. He was an anct on the Ed Sullivan Show every Sunday and was Adored by a whole nation. Now apologize for the insult.

  64. Nice cop out, shove ur apology up ur @$$

  65. edie, edie, edie:

Is this what a college education did for you, man. What an attitude !!!!!

Why don’t you learn how to spell, (WTF) is@$$?

  66. Figure it out old man

  67. Yea thats right I majored in masked profanity. Spell my name right you simpleton, its a few inches away from your face, get your prescription changed old man.

Haven’t heard you say anything about the Cannizaro article except your pathetic post still trying hopelessly to hold on to the inkling of hope that you have of Favre being responsible for that mess. “I’m from the “old school” where the QB was in complete control of the offense” pathetic old loser

  68. Hey goombah !!

I strongly suggest you get help or some type of anger management course. Sleep would help also.

  69. OLD LONELY BIGOT

  70. I sleep fine, Surgery to fuse disc in your back as well as the medication, will throw you off a bit. You seriously better stop with the ethnic slurs, you take things too far. But I have a pretty good idea of what you are
