Who’s to Blame for Cross-Field Pick?
Mangini spoke to the press yesterday about Favre’s interception across the middle of the field to Chansi Stuckey according to Erik Boland in Newsday.
“Yeah, he should have kept going on that,” Mangini said of Stuckey’s running of his route. “Worst-case scenario, if the guy does catch it, you have to be able to make the tackle. It’s a turnover, but it’s not a turnover which results in a touchdown, and he could do a lot better job on that play of finishing that route.”
The typically pleasant Stuckey sounded annoyed when asked what he could have done better.
“I mean, I could have just, I guess, tried to grab the guy and get an offensive pass interference [penalty] before the ball was thrown because he was in front of me,” Stuckey said. “So that’s really all I could have done.”
Earlier, Stuckey, though it wasn’t intentional, seemed to offer an indictment of the predictability of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer’s play call.
“He kind of recognized it from the first time,” Stuckey said of Flowers. “We had kind of beat them up pretty good on that play in the first quarter on a third down. He recognized it and jumped inside. I tried to get inside him but he kind of gave me a little bump that got me off my route and I kind of bumped into the safety and he just kind of kept running and the ball came right to him and he just made a play.”

Everyone involved has ownership. The OC for calling a familiar play in a dangerous spot, Favre for telegraphing it and not recognizing the D picking it up and Stuckey for the reasons Mangini highlighted. It’s like a pick in basketball that you just have to fight through. And, yes, Chansi, an offensive pass interference would have been preferable to the pick-6.
Blame Stuckey- Blame Shotty-Blame Mangini-Blame Coles-Blame Cotchery- Blame Baker- Blame Faneca, Blame Woody. So far all of you jets fans blame these guys on offense.
FARVE SHARE THE BALL!!!! FARVE SHARE THE FOOTBALL!!! FARVE SHARE THE FOOTBALL!!! FARVE SHARE THE FOOTBALL!!!!
BRETT FARVE = HUGE LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
isnt anybody concerned with the status of david harris??
I’m terrified. Not much you can do with this regime’s stance on injuries.
John clayton just stated that brett favre is playing hurt. He said he has a sore shoulder and is playing at 90%.So much for our improved O-Line.
Now if only our head coach, OC and DC would be playing at that level we would be 6-1 instead of 4-3.
You needed John Clayton to tell you he was hurt. Look at the man whince. Its pro football week 9 no one is 100%.
Fonzie/ Hank/Naples,
(In case anyone dosen’t know it Fonzie and Hank are the same person.)
I just read your bizarre comments on the “Chansi Stuckey- Sound Bites” post and now the one above.
You, Nikolas, and Johnny Styne are in a class all by yourselves. You guys really defy reality. I hope the three of you are happy in your own little world.
Of course it couldn’t have been Saint Brett’s fault. Thanks for clearing things up toolbox Mangini.
He should have kept on his route. I think that is the point and did you read Favre’s wifes’s comments? Brett needs to be shielded a little. It was both of their faults. Stuckey played a lil DB he could have slapped the ball out or at least made the tackle.
Stuckey should have been in a position to make a tackle if he kept running his route.
Watch the play.
I’m a Favre-supporter, but that INT was on him. Sure, he was making it to a spot, but there were too many red jerseys in that spot. And, he had to know where he was, in the redzone, up 4 points when an FG more or less puts the game away. If ever there was a time to make sure that the pass was either caught or incomplete, that was the time.
As for Chansi, the answer is “yes” you interfere with the guy. That’s what DBs do to stop a certain INT, especially when a penalty only means a longer FG. A WR never, and I mean never, lets a DB make an INT without a fight. I watch the Steelers a lot, Chansi should watch film of Hines Ward, he probaly saves Big Ben 4-6 INTs a year.
Everyone helped make that turd sandwich, so everyone has to take a bite.
Unfortunately, I really think that Schotty should bear the brunt of the blame for that pick and Favre getting tossed around because of predictable play calling -
calling a pass play when it should be a run play and every DC in the world knowing it.
It brings back memories of Schotty calling out routes for three plays in a row with Penny at the helm and CBs jumping the route each time because they know what is coming.
David Harris-LB- Jets Oct. 28 – 11:32 am et
David Harris is scheduled to go additional tests this week after receiving an MRI Monday on what the New York Daily News called an apparent groin injury.
It was initially reported as a hamstring injury, so the exact nature is a little unclear. Hopefully further testing clears the picture up this week.

Leon might have had a chance to catch him, but there was a blatant hold…he was pulled down by the arm. This is really clear on the NFL.com footage. In reality, he probably didn’t have a shot to catch him, but the penalty was still really obvious and there is no rule to say it should be ignored in that situation (ie an “uncatchable runner” exception). Anyone agree?
Does Schottenheimer realize he is supposed to be deceptive and tricky in his play calling? That he is supposed to throw the other team off from guessing what they are going to do. Because if Sunday is any indication, he is clueless. He telegraphed every play, broadcasted every play. On every running play Hunter, and Turner would come in and be announced by the ref “number 75 is in as an eligible receiver”, they might as well announced that they were going to call a running play, which is what they did. Conversely, on every pass play Favre would be in the shotgun with no RB in the backfield, kinda hard to run the ball with no RB to hand off to. Every pass play was that way. How did they think they were deceiving the Chiefs that way? I understand that Baker and Franks were injured, but come on! They could have put a RB in the backfield and ran the Play Action, at least on some of the plays, just to throw the Chiefs off a little. Its no wonder Favre’s last Int. was returned for a TD, he was in the shotgun, on the 9 yard line, his options and field were limited. IMO, when its the 4th quarter and you drive the field and are inside the 10 yard line, you pound the ball in the end zone.
The more I think about the game, and I’m grateful we won, the more I’m in disbelief at the way they called the offensive game. They made no attempt to hide their play calling with Play Action, or direct snap or a shuttle pass, anything to throw them off. I have to really question Schottenheimer’s competency.
I also agree with ESD, 3rd and 2, 4th quarter, FG puts you up 7…run the ball. Even if you don’t make the 1st down (and the Jets were averaging around 5 yards per carry), the clock runs. Shott’s call and Favre’s decision to throw a pass that wasn’t 100% certain (either catch or incomplete) were to blame because either would take Chansi out of the picture. However, once the pass was thrown, Chansi has to man up…he should’ve broken up the play or tackled Flowers.
There was a play that Peyton Manning made a couple years back that I’d love for the Jets to try one game down near the opponents 5. Its the play where Manning was talking to his wideout and shaking his head no looking upset then there was a direct snap to Edge who ran it in for 6, Completely fooled everyone including me.
I would also like to throw in more RB screen passes. Easy way to get positive yards with low risk passes. Mangold can pull pretty fast might as well use this to an advantage.
SackDance99,
I have to disagree with you on that. That was the worse play call of the day.
I watched the play over and over. the chiefs had 3 defensive linemen and 3 linebackers that were heavily shifted to the right side. They had 3 CB’s that were lined up on the line of scrimmage and then they had 2 safties, one was playing 2 yards off the ball and the other was playing 4 yards off the ball.
The jets came out looking like they were in 5 wide w/coles and J Co split out, Chansi Stuckey was in the slot to the left and Leon Washington and Keller where lined up tight, shading the outside shoulders of the left and right tackles.
First off, the chiefs blitzed 3 linebackers to the side of Leon Washington and up the middle, forcing LW to sprint back to the middle of the field to pick up the blitizing line backer. He obviously got pushed back into favre’s face because he had the worst angle to block him. It was almost like a trap play.
Keller was lined up on the same side of Stuckey and looked like he was doing a fly and Chansi Stuckey went underneath him. Stuckey first got jammed at the line and broke out but the saftey from the opposite side of the field read the play. He started running at Stuckey before Stuckey got off the line of scrimmage from the opposide side of the field…
Brett didnt see the saftey running across the field. He never looked into the middle of the field to see the right saftey sprint towards Stuckey before Stuck even got off the line. Stuck got jammed, was unable to get into the spot, saftey read the play beautifully and broke on the ball, and Favre had pressure in his face and threw it in the middle of the field.
It was 3rd and 2, we were in Shot gun with no Rb near Favre. The chiefs had the DL and 3 LB and we had absolutely no threat of running the ball on that play cuz no one was near favre. The chiefs played it beautufully.
ramble914,
I have had the same issue with Schotty and his player “packages” since 2006.
Back in 2006, we had the “running package” with Keven Barlow and D. Barnes, the fb. Anytime they came in the game, we were running the ball.
Anytime Leon came in the game, “passing package” we threw the ball. It is very predictable at times.
This week was a lot less predictable because we came into the game passing from the broken-I which threw the chiefs off guard. Hence, we scored pretty easily on our first drive.
It was unusual for Mangini to publicly lay the blame on a specific player, Stucky. In general, Mangini is good about not doing that sort of thing. It’s particularly egregious when there was plenty of deserved criticism to go around. Stucky has been developing well and making plays. Mangini usually strikes a nice balance between recognizing areas that need to be improved upon while not undermining players, which, I’m sure he knows, is counter-productive. This public admonishment was a mistake.
Was it motivated by a desire to shift the heat off Favre? I wouldn’t think consciously, but how to best handle Favre’s celebrity status, etc. is a tricky question and maybe in this instance the dilemma got the best of Mangini. Obviously, I can only guess at what prompted it, but, I would also guess, that, in retrospect, Mangini might regret it.
Ramble,
No my friend. I can’t believe you and your ignorance. My friend you are blinded and the DEADLY DISEASE has gotten to you. I know that ever since DEADLY DISEASE has gotten here Mangini has acted differently. Look now even the players are desperate for a playoff spot. They talk about it every week. Whatever happened in 2006 when Mangini ruled with an iron fist. Too bad the new york media is not patient enough with this team. Its sad that some jets fans follow some of the media’s impatience. Mangini I understand how hard it is for you to handle New York but keep pulling my friend because soon everyone else will follow. It starts this Sunday in Buffalo. TAKE THE BALL OUT OF FARVE”S HANDS AND RUN THE BILLS INTO THE GROUND. GO BACK TO THE DAYS OF WATCHING FIGHTS BEFORE GAMES AND FEEL THE ATTITUDE OF THE UNDERDOG AND BLOOD FLOWING OUT OF YOUR LIPS LIKE THE LAST TWO WEEKS. THIS SUNDAY IS A TEST TO THE FUTURE OF THIS TEAM. MANGINI SCREW THE MEDIA SCREW WHAT FANS DONT LIKE YOU AND WANT YOUR HEAD SCREW FARVE LOVERS. PUT A STAKE UP THE BILLS BEHINDS AND SHUT EVERYONE UP!!! I AM PULLING FOR YOU MANGINI!!!! FORGET FARVE!!!!
correction:
screw the fans that don’t like you.
ramble914:
I’s ok if you think am Fonzie because I agree with his thinking and agree with almost all his comments and opinions BUT saying that I’m also Johnny Stynne is the lowest insult in my life !!! Apparently you have never read his comments because he worships Farve and disappeared from this blog on Farve’s first INT.
Let me introduce you to another diehard Jets fan. His name is Mark and lived in Green Bay the last two years. You can read his comments here: Injuries taking Toll On Jets by Bassett

Correction: You can read his comments on the article by Bassett “From The press Box – Part One”.
Hank/Fonzie,
Please, go away, you are not a real Jets fan, which is hard enough without a D_ckhead like you screwing up everything. Chad Pennington cannot take any team to the Super Bowl, and without that a QB is not revelant, and that my friend is what it’s all about. With Favre we have a QB who has that potential.
im with you ramble, that guy never has anything positive to say
Ramble and Mike Rossetti,
Get ready for FARVE to have a miserable season and not to come back next year!!!
BRETT FARVE = HUGE LOSER!!!!
In case you haven’t noticed hank/naples and I are not the same person we are family just like the jets were until moneybags began spending and putting on a show for the whole nfl and his ignorant followers like yourselves believed it and followed the hype. Its about time FARVE gave up on himself and hangs up his football attire. His image is too painful to watch on a Jets team searching for an identity.
