Who Gets the Call?

So with Ainge and Chatman now on the IR, there are two roster spots that the Jets need to fill quickly.  Here’s my thoughts on eight guys who might be likely to fill those spots …

RB/FB Jehuu Caulcrick (Undrafted Rookie, Jets Practice Squad)
Despite all the shuffling on the squad, Jehuu Caulcrick impressed the Jets enough to keep him on the team’s show team, and he has stayed there for almost two months.  With two ailing Tight Ends in Chris Baker (hip) and Bubba Franks (groin), the Jets need some skill blockers to help in the run and passing game.
Likelihood: 45%

TE Joe Kowalewski (Former Jet, Free Agent?)
JoeKo was one of the players in 2007 that got more time as the season wore on … but that was because Darian Barnes sucked.  What he lacks in ability, he more that makes up for in enthusiasm.
Likelihood: 15%

TE Jason Pociask (Former Jet, Free Agent)
Pociask is known for his blocking ability.  Poz did make some nice catches in the preseason, showing that his game has become more well rounded.  The Patriots even picked him up for a quick look.
Likelihood: 20%

TE Brad Listorti (Undrafted Rookie, Free Agent)
The former Jets camper and squadder, Listorti would know the playbook and has shuffled some but he’s familiar with the team.  The Jets have thought enough of him to give him multiple looks this summer and fall.
Likelihood: 10%

TE AJ Schable (Former Jet, Free Agent)
The Jets signed the DE/TE/FB Schable earlier this year and he was with the team during camp and preseason.  I don’t know his status as he was carted off the field with a potentially seirous head/neck injury that later proved less serious.  Not sure if he even wants to play anymore.
Likelihood: 10%

LB Jason Trusnik (Jets PUP List)
David Harris’ injury has to be concerning to the Jets.  It’s currently unknown how long the Designated Hitter will be sidelined, but the Jets need to get stronger in the middle of their defense.  Trusnik might be better suited to play outside (he’s 6′4″) but Bowens decently enough inside last weekend.  Mangini has made note of Trusnik’s process in getting healthy this fall, so he might be ready to go for the Jets.
Likelihood: 50%

LB Kenwin Cummings (Undrafted Rookie, Jets Practice Squad)
A D-II collegiate player, Cummings started the season on the active roster, if that tells you anything about what they think of his game.  The Jets have been looking for opportunities to bring him back up to the team, and David Harris’ injury might prove to be the right timing.
Likelihood: 40%

LB Matt Chatham (Former Jet, Free Agent)
Chatham was cut on the last set of roster cutdowns.  He knows the system, the players and could (if healthy) could contribute straight away.
Likelihood: 10%

  1. I noticed that there is no mention of the JETS failed PSL auction on Stub Hub by the JETSblog. The JETS only sold 620 of the 2000 seats available. Minimum bid was $5,000. So if fans aren’t going to pay $5,000 to sit in this premier section, why would they pay more to sit in another section? Bottom line is they won’t. Woody should get the message and reduce drastically all PSL fees if he wants a full stadium in 2010. And by the way, there are still two corners and the name of the Stadium which haven’t been sold. Seems to me that poor play on the field and the economy are having a huge negative impact on the JETS money grab. Yes, that is what it is, a money grab. And thankfully most fans aren’t falling for it.

  2. I’d put JEHUUUUUUUUUUUUUU in there. Liked that guy since his MSU days. TD machine!

  3. if Jehuu CANT play TE then WHY would we bring him up? we HAVE Tony Richardson! I say its gonna be Pociask and Trusnik. How about put Nugent on IR and use HIS spot for Jehuu!?

  4. ******Question******

Is the Jets vs. Pats game going to be aired on national TV?

  5. Najy,
I believe it will be on NFL Network nationally, and probably on channel 2 locally.

  6. I would assume local TV and “nationally” on NFL Network.

At least that’s what they did for the Giants MNF game a couple weeks ago (locally on My 9 and nationally on ESPN). This is what I hope at least.

  7. I guess Marcus Henry is no longer a guy who is in the Jets future?

We should bring Cummings and a comptetent TE who can block and catch. No need to have just blockers to make our obvious play calling more obvious!

  8. Jets sign RB Marcus Mason and promote safety James Ihedigbo to the active roster

  9. it’s in the works ed, I’m glad that they’re failing at selling seats.

i have a real job too .. and can’t write everyday about the jets all day .. unless you want to pay me to do so.

  10. all things. marcus henry might be, but wide receivers need time to develop. there’s too many full spots ahead of him on the roster as it now stands. he needs to beat out someone like wallace wright first.

  11. Two comments:

    1) Couln’t happen to a better guy. What goes arround comes around. Woody will always remember the guy he threw under the bus for a few PSL’s.

2)Caulcrick hands down.!! I’ve liked this kid from first day. I liked his story, his conviction, his character, his powerfull running style and he will get you the tough yards. Mangini has to give him a shot !!!

  12. I would love to see Cummings get a shot. Loved him in pre-season. I think the Jets feel they need to get a running back to replace Chatman. If TJ got hurt in a game, we would be forced to use Leon as the every down back, putting him in danger of serious injury. Don’t think the Jets would want to put him in that position. He’s too valuable. So I definitely think a RB will be added. Are they comfortable with Caulcrick running the ball 4-5 times a game? What’s Musa Smith up to? The other spot will obviously be a LB or TE. This will depend on whose injury is worse, Baker or Harris.

  13. Hank, is it possible that Woody really felt that Favre was an upgrade at QB, while at the same time it made financial sense? A win-win? As a businessman, isn’t he supposed to make money? Of course he is. And of course 99.9% of the world thought the Favre pick-up was a no-brainer, so why so angry with Woody? All sports/ entertainment is out of control financially, and I blame the people who pay. I used to be a season ticket holder, but no longer. I’ll go to a game once in while. I love the Jets and football, but I’m not going to contribute to the purses of these people. I rarely go to the movies because of how much the tickets are. It is the fans who are to blame for the high cost of entertainment.

  14. I agree with you Pete, on both topics. I like Cummings too. Didja read Newsday’s take on the StubHub auctions? They make it sound like its an indesputable SUCCESS! And Woody even has the nerve to say that adding Favre for PSLs sake had never entered his “brain pattern”. huh? This guy is a business man who tried to snooker Manhatten to pony up a stadium for him, and he had an economics professor, months ago, assess the validity of the auction process during a tough economy, but we are to believe that it never occurred to him that Favre might help with the PSLs? He really must think us Jets fans are fools…

  15. Bubby, the whole financial crisis we are in has shown me that people in power/ with great wealth, really think the rest of us are idiots. From the politicians to the corporate bigwigs, and Wall St people, it just amazes me how smug, arrogant, and how confident that they are untouchable, is unbelievable.

  16. Pete 57:

I totaly agree that its us, the fans, at are to blame for spoling the owners. Believe me I know how it hurt to give my back incredible loge season package @ shea in protest. However I disagree with you, This guy Woody had $$$$$ as his main iterest first, not the players, not the team trust me. Maybe Tangini did, not that Woody guy.

  17. If Woody had money as his main interest he wouldn’t own an NFL team. He’d have used his inheritance to run an investment banking operation trading credit default swaps for huge profits and then gotten bailed out by taxpayers when the well ran dry.

  18. Will we get a sunday night football game this season??? I want to see John Madden talk about Favre and how much he loves him

  19. Bassett…I see it differently to you. I don’t think Henry will ever beat out Wright because Wright is not WR#6, he’s ST#1. Just like Carroll, Miller and Spencer, he doesn’t have a role other than on special teams, except as an emergency or in garbage time.

Henry should improve on the taxi squad and fight to make the team next year (or maybe even in two years) but his main competition is going to be Smith, Stuckey and Clowney, I think. He needs to bulk up, I reckon.
