JMattera’s Gridiron Grudges – Week 9

1) Eric Mangini vs. Dick Jauron – This game will feature the tale of two coaches going on extremely two different paths. After last week’s loss in Miami, Dick Jauron was informed he would be receiving an extension to be the head coach of the Buffalo Bills through the 2011 season. On the other side of the coin after the NYJ win verse the Chiefs, many were still questioning immensely Eric Mangini and his staff. Mangini (the Veteran team) and Jauron (the Younger team) both received a ray of light in Week 1 when the Patriots suffered a brutal injury. Many analysts said it would be between the Jets and Bills for the division the rest of the way. This week’s game is crucial for both teams considering the winner gets a huge boost of momentum going into the second half of the season. The Jets have not played a good game since the first half of the Arizona game, and going up to Buffalo will be no easy chore. Mangini is 1-3 in games against Jauron. Which coach will have the team more prepared for victory and ready for a big run in the NFL’s second half of the season?

2) Marshawn Lynch vs. NYJ Rush Defense – The NYJ have done a good job stopping the running game this season; however their toughest test will be waiting for them this coming Sunday. Marshawn Lynch is a bruiser with game breaking ability that can haunt the Jets all day this weekend. Lynch has a total of 123 rushing attempts (450 yards, 6 TD’s) on the season and 24 receptions out of the backfield. That comes out to roughly 21 touches per game over their first 7 contests. With starting wide receiver Josh Reed out for this game, the Bills may even rely on Lynch more for some consistency moving the ball on offense. Look for the Bills to give Lynch at least 25 touches in this game. The NYJ must keep Lynch in check, and let Trent Edwards keep the ball in his hands without Josh Reed.

3) Brett Favre vs. Limiting Turnovers – Winning the turnover battle is crucial to being victorious in NFL games especially division games on the road. The NYJ have not won a turnover battle since the Week 4 game against Arizona. Over the first 7 games of the season, Brett Favre has thrown 11 interceptions. You knew when you got him that you would have to live and die by his passing routines and ways. I just think he has to be more careful with the football, for example throwing it away sometimes as opposed to throwing into double coverage 50 yards down field. Turnovers are going to happen, interceptions will be thrown, but it is limiting them and taking care of the ball that will help your team achieve victory.

4) NYJ Special Teams vs. BUF Special Teams – Football games are often influenced greatly by special teams play and field position. The Buffalo Bills have a very good special teams unit. Both teams have quick and shifty return men in Leon Washington and Roscoe Parrish. Both kick returners have game breaking ability that can alter the momentum and result of the game. The edge in the kicking game goes to Buffalo with a solid kicker/punter unit in Rian Lindell and Brian Moorman. They are solid veterans who have been with the Bills the past few seasons.  They are opposed by the new look Jay Feely/Reggie Hodges platoon. It seems like the Bills have the edge in the special teams’ game, so Mike Westhoff has to have the boys ready to out perform their opponent this weekend.

  1. i think the rush defense should have no problem stopping Lynch.

Any Jets fans here have myspace and and join Jets Nation. the link is below.

    http://groups.myspace.com/NFLNewYorkJets

  2. Set the tone early and set the tone often. Though they have a winning record, I suspect they can be rattled if we score early because they have such a young team and I am not a believer of Trent Edwards.

Watch out for that piece of crap… Roscoe Parrish. He usually has big games against us and the Jets must contain him.

  3. Najy, I feel very confident we will win the war in the trenches. We will have a good, not great day rushing the ball, and we will stop their run game. I think Mangini is a good coach and will make sure the gameplans are solid for this one. Jets should be pumped up for the game and come out fired up. In the end, the Jets are the more veteran team and will make the plays to seal the victory.

    Jets 24-13

  4. Love the optimism

  5. if the jets come out with fire then we win the game

  6. i also really like what elam brings to the table hes a tough hard hitting safety….something i think we need….i think we are in better shape with him and barret then we are with eric smith who i despise

  7. Don’t know why, but I am feeling optimistic about Sunday. I think we play up/down to our opponent. I think the team knows it’s underachieved to this point and will be ready to make a statement. I also think we’ll see BF throw a few long balls this game (not into double coverage) and even if he doesn’t connect, we’ll stretch the Bills good. I’m hoping little Leon can continue to be the gamechanger he’s shown us he can be.

  8. I honestly feel that this is a very winnable game. Buffalo hasn’t played any division rivals until last week, and we all saw the outcome. I think that we come out this weekend in first place (greater division record). I think Favre is gonna have a great game. 2-3 Tds. I wouldn’t be surprised if Leon takes a kickoff to the house. we’ve certainly been waiting for one of those all season.

  9. i’m loving the optimism too..i need it right now

  10. ALL year long I/WE have been saying that CERTAIN games were MUST WIN.THEY WEREN’T. This week is a TOTALLY different circumstance. OUR team is on the BRINK of disaster. So far this year WE have NOT lived/played up to our potential. At times we look UNSTOPPABLE and other times we look like the Bad News Bears of football. I feel like Im at Six Flags every Sunday with ALL the rollercoaster rides WE’VE been on this year. Good thing for me is that I LOVE rollercoaster rides but after a while I DO wanna get off. I think the ONE mainstay has been our DEFENSE(not necessarily as of late)but I chalk THAT up to how INCONSISTENT our OFFENSE has been. Everyone knows no matter how GOOD a defense is,when they are on the FIELD the all the time they are going to get run down and tired. I was one of the HAPPIEST people in the world when I saw the J-E-T-S traded for BRETT FAVRE,but the INTERCEPTIONS he has thrown are damn near INEXCUSEABLE! Its not like they were tipped passes or the cornerback made a GREAT play and picked it,they were into double/triple coverage OR right in their hands! I DO still feel that he WAS/IS a BETTER QUATERBACK for us than CHAD. (I KNOW I just opened up the FLOODGATES for all the CHAD lovers out there, but hey,its MY/YOUR opinion.)Obviously,FAVRE is not the ONLY one to blame,SCHOTTY’S play calling has been ERRATIC and SPURRATIC to say the least. I was really happy when I heard that the PLAYERS are saying the same thing(how could they not!?) We NEVER seem to get into any kind of RYTHM. We PASS when we’re supposed to RUN and RUN when we should be PASSIING. Also, where is the PLAYACTION? Hopefully SCHOTTY has heard all of this(how could he not) and make the PROPER adjustments. For ALL of you RAGGING on OUR team each and every week(some weeks deservingly) WE are still only ONE game out of FIRST PLACE and just happen to play the FIRST PLACE TEAM this week! Can you imagine IF we just play SOUND/FUNDAMENTAL football and actually WIN this game what it would do for the PLAYERS/COACHERS/FANS moral going into the second half of the season!? WE HAVE TO HAVE IT! That is why THIS is a MUST GAME WIN! J-E-T-S JETS1 JETS!! JETS!!!

  11. kc.,

Jets have won the last 3 out of 4 games…. Things arent as bad as you may think.

  12. KC,
    Paragraphs are helpful when reading.

  13. im sick of all the pessimistic jet fans. lets go into buffalo and show the bills whose boss.
    Jets 21 Bills 13

  14. drose…that IS a paragraph! maybe a run-on one,but it IS a paragraph! Najy, you must of had a HARD time reading it also beacause I said the exact OPPOSITE….please TRY to read it again.

  15. Im the most OPTIMISTIC fan ON this site! with that being said,Im ALSO the most REALISTIC! JESUSREVIS…EASIER SAID THAN DONE!

  16. Favre has never won in Buffalo. Bills are a different team at home. I.E. San Diego. Get ready boys for a ole fashion but whipping. I cant wait till favre does that lame walk to the sidline looking down with his helmet half off looking so stupid.

  17. buffaloBill….you ARE gonna EAT those words!

  18. kc.,

Sorry, I stopped reading after 2 sentences. It looked way too messy.

  19. well… you left yourself open with that comment. But, i am going to leave it alone this time. You need to calm down, obviously you are speaking with more emotion than logic. Hey there is some good news for you, there is alway a 1 o’clock game on fox. Lastly, you guys are in for a treat with Edwards. He can read defense just as good as any quarterback in the league. He also makes good decisions unlike Brett.
4 fourth quarter turnovers killed the bills last week, i dont see that happening at the ralph against some team who has a young secondary, overrated DL, and washed up QB. Think about this: if the Bills roster was in NEW YORK and the Jets were from BUFFALO. The Bills would be on the same level as the cowboys in term of media coverage and the Jets would be a team full of soft scrubs.

  20. BungaloBill – Just watch. Trent Edwards will be hearing all this Favre-like criticism after he throws 3 more picks this Sunday! except Trent doesn’t have a HOF career to fall back on….

  21. Farve should retire and start his countdown til canton. When he retires or decides he does like us Yankee’s, who is going to man the ship? Clemons or are you guys going to signed another washed up legend to sell your overpriced tickets?

  22. First things first. Win this game. Get to the playoffs. See what happens. Worry about next year in March.

  23. Yes our DB’s are young but we run a 3-4 and Jenkins is on the verge of being a HOF! Ellis has ~6 sacks and it’s our LB you failed to mention anything about that make this D tick.

Win or lose… At least we wont be playing home games in CANADA!!!!

  24. Repro – Do you think they might serve Bradors and back-bacon at Bills games and dial up cheers in french ?

  25. BuffaloBill84,

You team has compiled a bunch of wins against inferior opponents.

Then, you let Chad and the Miami Dolphins,( who by the way only won one game last year), take you out back and lay a whooping on you.

Lets not forget about the Cardinals either and how they embarressed you guys. You guys are pathetic team who has been beat teams from the NFC East… We will expose you guys for what you really are this weekend…

Before you open you mouth, You do know the Jets handeled the Cardinals and defeat in Miami…. Right?

  26. Thats right my team has to play a game in Canada. It is unfortunate but we are pretty depressed up here. It doesnt help that all our taxes go downstate to pay for the scum down there. Jenkins has spent more time on the IR than on the field in his career. I hope you were joking about the HOF. Well if Jenkins is going why not Dwayne Robertson or Steve Ettman? I am sorry to say but your linebackers like Bills backers(except Posluzney) are no name running back matadors. So i guess thats a push. I am telling you Ralph Wilson stadium is atough place to win ( except if you are the Patriots).

  27. Really?
    Buffalo wins -
Seattle – ok not going to say anything
@ Jacksonville – I would like to see the jets do that in FLA
Oakland – better than you think – all i have to do is ask you – dont give me that on the road BS because the Broncos blew them up the first game.
St.Louis – Better than you think – beat Washington, Dallas and should have beaten New England.
San Diego – Well how did you fare against them.

I know the Bills lost to Miami and Arizona whom the jets both beat. But seriously do you think that is a valid arguement?

  28. Buffalo, I love it when fans of other teams come onto this site and ham it up with us. We spend too much time picking on each other and our team apart it’s nice to actually have a foe. Do you think Jason peters is over rated?

Jenkins is on the verge. He is amazing! As for our LB… Look at their stats!

  29. This is the NFL big guy. It is not like were the SEC playing a MAC team. EVERY WIN is just as important and the one before it and it doesnt matter who you beat just ask the Giants last year.

  30. Peters is a P.O.S. he is acting like a cry baby because he didnt get his money. He Gave a up a coupl huge sack last week against porter and did the same thing against Jax that almost cost us that game as well. Yeah he reminds me of Reuben Brown. That is the problem with this league is these guys get reps as great players (especially offensive lineman) and it never leaves them. Then they gat these huge contracts and never live up to them.

  31. BuffaloBill84,

Jets arent claiming to be great… Unlike the Buffalo Bills who might be the best team in the NFL if they played in NYC… I almost threw up in my mouth saying that.

Jacksonville was a sorry football team at the begining of the year. They were bombarded with injuries on the O and D line. So give me a break.

My point is, before you get your hopes up and start making claims… Think about who the teams that you lost to and what the Jets did to both of those teams.

  32. Just goes to show how much BS the probowl is! I think the bills playoff drought is punishment from the football gods for getting rid of Flutie!

  33. I’m sorry, but this column is consistently unreadable. I’m not trying to hurt feelings, and I mention this only because the rest of the site is so great, it’s a shame to see it brought down every Friday.

  34. I think you missed the point about rosters-
Lynch in New York would be a superstar
Edwards in New York would be the next Broadway Joe
All i was saying is they would get more pub if they were in the second largest sports market in world. People act like the Bills are bunch of no namers who are overachieving, but these guys are solid football players. Once the Mcgee gets healthy (maybe this week) the bills pass d will be back to its early season form. While we are talking about Kris “the Machine” Jenkins lets talk about Marcus Stroud.
It is hard to win in this league signing free agents. it just doesnt work as well as you think. Good teams build throught the draft. Look at the Bills under Donahue – signed everyone and their brother – Bledsoe, Spikes, etc… doesnt work. The bills under Marv Levy and Russ Brandon have the pieces in place for a good run. Edwards, Lynch, Evans, Parrish, Posluzney, Whitner, Mcgee. All key positions all draft picks. Look around the league and that is how the good teams do and did it. San Diego, Indy, New England, Philly, Giants. Good luck with you next 10 years of bad football in new york like we suffered here cleaning up Jerry butler (R.I.P) and Donahues mess. You will have to do the same

  35. Lynch shouldn’t be a superstar anywhere. From a statistics perspective I’m not impressed. He has never carried the team on his shoulders either.

  36. Oh and all of our signings have been successful. The Favre deal was sketchy, but I don’t think you will have to wait ten years. I’d bet against it.

  37. Harris, Revis, Washington, Keller, Lowry, Rhodes, Thomas, Mangold. Silly me I thought we have had good draft classes.

  38. i got nothing better to do up here in lovely but desolate western new york but talk with a few my fellow NFL fans. At least we have passion and that is what makes this so great. Right guys?

  39. It’s division thats what makes it great. When you guys moving to Canada again?

  40. were are you going to be when Favre leaves. 8-8 0r 7-9 oh excuse me but you better pray you get there this year. you could be 4-6 af ter the next three games.

  41. when ralph dies but i dont worry about stuff i cant control.

  42. I hate Brett. I’d rather be developing a QB who would have only throw 7 ints at this point. Sorry about Canada. That is the pinnacle of lame.

  43. BuffaloBill84,

How dumb will you feel after saying all this nonsense and Jets beat the Bills?

  44. It is something that people hold over your head. I would rather have the bills go 3 -13 every year than go to toronto and win the bowl. I am 24 so all i remember is the end of the kelly years then alot of bad football. As i can see jets fans know about passion, every june or july it hits you and its like waiting for christmas. i think football fans are nuts because true fans cannot wait for summer to be over. I dont know but those Fk’s up in toronto dont know a damn thing about passion that cant even sell the Miami game out and most of the people going are heading north from Buffalo

  45. Oh i have been doing it for years. I geuss i should be pretty dumb by now. But i have been around the bills my whole life and this is the best i have felt in a long freaking time.

  46. a bunch of 4th quarter comebacks by a second year quarterback will do that to any fan

  47. Football is pretty year round for me, so I know what you are saying. The game is changing. They want to expand and make it more of a business. They are protecting assets, except if they play the Pats. It’s a shame. BTW why do refs never call obvious penalities on the Pats? Their game against Denver was horrible. We watched a taunting penalty for 30 seconds and no flag.

  48. GOODELL and BELICHECK are BFF’s

  49. I hope something happens since ST Louis sent in the tape of blown calls. No matter who wins between us on Sunday it will be much harder to secure the division with the Pats being treated as saints.

  50. Why has the Bills vs. Jets rivalry never taken off. my geuss is they have never been great at the same time and one team has not owned the other. any thoughts

  51. How much are Jets tickets next year and how does that stupid seat license work?

  52. JustAGreenGuy,

Its just like any company trying to run its bussiness. The U.S. has a maximum of 300 mil potential customers. However, there are around 3 billion that live outside of the U.S. that can become potential customers. Greed and Globablization.

The NFL might not give a damn about us (the fans) in the U.S. if they can attract an audience in China or Europe or any other region where they can attract more fans.

  53. BuffaloBill84,

Right now, the PSL, Personal Seat Licsince, are being auctioned. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think they are going for over $20,000 per PSL.

Then the tickets are going to be over $150.

It is GOD DAMN rediculous and robberyl.

  54. Bills tickets are $60 no strings attached. The thing that gets me though is they are trying to generated revenue here in Buffalo but not really. Ralph Wilson could sell the naming rights to the stadium for a cool $10 million but he doesnt and everytime he talks about revenue they fail to mention the ungodly amount they receive through revenue sharing and those ridiculous TV contracts. You are right these guys are greedy the Bills are worth over $800 million right now, what the hell is he worried about when he bought the franchise for $25,000 back in the early 60’s.

  55. I know. I’m a ruthless business type myself. Just somethings are bigger than money. Not the Jets , especially as of late, or the players, but the game. The game is something special. Plus NFL europa bombed worse than Euro disney.

  56. JustAGreenGuy,

    I understand.

It is a fine line between business and sport.

I like to keep the 2 seperate because they do not mix well with each other.

  57. That is unreal. I can’t even fathom the thought. so can someone buy a personal seat liscense then sell the right to buy season tickets to buyers and make money like a timeshare in florida?

  58. Yeah. Business can’t make 100,000 people jump up and cheer together.

I think someone is trying to do something similar to pay for their PSL.

  59. Treating football like a business is the worst mistake an owner can make.

Business fans will only be their when the team is good and will get up and leave in teh 4th Q when the team is down.

They will not show up to games during losing seasons and will not be outside tailgating in December when the team is 3-10.

    Its a damn shame.

  60. BuffaloBill…all I said was it EASIER said than DONE…NOT that it WONT be DONE!

  61. Mangini has to go!

  62. The Jests will finish below Miami this year…Just a bunch of whining losers.. Keep living in 1969…Bills will kick the tar out of you all the way back to your stadium..oops sorry you don’t have one of those either..

At least the Bills have decent fans..I miss the great rivalry of the Kelly years..I hope that starts again..I loved when we traded billboard adds..That was class..That’s what you Jests fans lack…You had Miami before they clicked and they still almost beat you.. Thanks for Chad by the way..Offensive player of the week..

Man it must suck to be you…Giants rule NY and that’s the way it should be.That’s the way it’s always been. Well lets not live in the past. Lets look to the future. oops you don’t have one of those either..tsk tsk

  63. Honestly i think the bills are gonna 21 spread the jets simply because…yes the jets can stop the run, but as far as points…they give up alot of those. you win football games by scoring points. thats the only stat i look at…remember rookie replyers…men lie, women lie, numbers dont. Bills 31-24
