Link: Is Schotty Holding It Back?
Posted on October 31st, 2008 by Bassett
Adjunct to today’s earlier discussion about Leon Washington, Michael Salfino wrote an article on the Jets offense and why it needs a serious overhauling.

Ridiculous!!! Utter ridiculous!! Its nothing but destructive criticism. These comments maybe be a appropriate after this game and not today. Its creates more dessention among the fanbase. I want is e-mail. Bassett can you give me his e-mail address
? This sports writing is irresponsible and destructive because it does nothing but add to the dessention of the fans and bickering on the team and generally destructive.
Sports writers suck. Did he have any detail or insight? Chad’s injury perhaps and the fact that Clemens did throw downfield. Fire him and give me the fricking job! Schott does suck tho.
The timing is awful for this article but what can you do when Schott has obviously been bad. I’ve been saying this about Schott for weeks now and you’ve discounted me and ridiculed me as a Favre lover. Well now its not just the fans but the media and his own players. Fonz, we both obviously are Jet diehard’s, regardless of our opinions about the direction of the team or its coaching staff, so I want Schott to suceed as much as you because it will translate into wins. However time is running out for him and he has to step up help put his players in the best position to suceed or else he’s gone. The only thing he can do is man up and prove everyone wrong, but its not lookin good right now
i think schott is feeling the HEAT even though i keep saying that i think
1. I still think favre doesnt know everything in the book i also think thats the reason why we dont do alot of motion
2. Favre ws injured in the cincy game and his hand is in bad shape
I mean ever time they show favre he’s shaking that hand and trying to work out like a kink and we also got to see Brad smith take a reverse and he was going to attempt a pass but there was coverage downfield so he ran
By no means am i defending schotty but the only way he goes is if mangini gets a west coast offensive coordinator so favre can go to an offense he know but then you stunt clemens and Ratliff growth. Ratliff is the future for this team i am not willing to risk that so favre can feel comfortable for maybe one more season
Ratliff has a great arm. Funny thing is I went to Hofstra at the beggining of training camp and he looked terrible, they were gonna cut that day but he managed a great two minute drill and then he had that game where he hooked up with clowney, and to tell you the truth I like his decision making better than Clemens
Maybe Jets fans will realize that it wasn’t Chad, it wasn’t our wide-outs, it wasn’t our o-line and it wasn’t Thomas Jones that has consistently let us down. It has been our absolutely abysmal play-calling week in and week out. We don’t spread the field, we don’t cause confusion and we’re far too stubborn. We need a change badly in our OC and we need it sooner rather than later. Maybe we can get the Texas Tech head-coach Mike Leach who is an offensive genius. I don’t know. Or just get one of those Madden Nation kids and they’ll probably be more creative…. (I’m only half kidding)
I have to laugh at all the FIRE this guy FIRE this other guy talk. Lets see what happens Sunday. This game will go a loooong way in showing us who we are and what we are capable of doing.
Alon: How about that WR Crabtree? Would love to draft him, but ll keep dreaming! Looks like a Larry Fitzgerald!
I thought that article made a lot of good points about how badly our offensive play calling has been and that maybe the problem wasnt Chad. Can’t believe that CP is ranked second in yards per attempt and Favre is 20th. Wasn’t the whole idea of getting Favre, was now we can throw the ball far, downfield and open up things underneath for Thomas Jones and Leon to run.
Schott over-complicates offensive football. I keep on harping on this but go back to the first drive of the 3rd quarter against Oakland. TJ run up the middle-8 yards; TJ run up the middle-31 yards and the 3rd play? A pitch to Leon Washington off of left tackle that was fumbled and resulted in a 12 yard loss. Why? To me, Schott should’ve been fired right then and there. You can dispute whether a run up the middle for TJ or play action pass should’ve been called, but when your RB has just averaged nearly 20 yards per carry the last 2 rushes, don’t you make a statement to the defense to stop it? The Jets rack up yardage both running and passing. But, it should be an explosive offense that puts maximum pressure on a defense because the Jets run and pass well. Instead, Schott by getting cute actually hinders the offense. Adopt the KISS method–K.I.S.S.=Keep It Simple Schotty!!!!!
Sackdance you arent harping on it, you make a great point. That play still haunts me. It almost seems like Schott is always trying to fool someone, and sometimes he just needs to let the OFF just go straight at them. Those are the times when we get the false starts, illegal motion and formation penalties. It also seems like teams know exactly who to send on a blitz so that we cant pick it up. Keeping it simple would go a long way towards cleaning it up.
And hank is 100% right that we really should wait for this weekend before we go completely nuts. We are an ugly 4-3 at this point and playing a game for first place, but if Schott comes out and calls a game for the ages we all look stupid…for everyones sake lets just get it done up in buffalo
Clearly the team wants to have the flexibility to attack different teams in different ways, but on some level it seems to have interfered with their consistency. If they want to run a lot of shotgun with 4-5 receivers, I think they can do that with some success (though, as Oakland made clear, not with repeated success, as there are no receivers who threaten a defense and keep them from playing press coverage and blitzing). They’ve had some very good success going vertical off play action, most notably against Arizona, but against other teams as well. They could probably do a lot of funky things by moving Keller around and running a no-huddle. About the only offense I don’t think the team could run effectively is a heavy run offense, but that’s okay, those offenses are a waste of time in this day and age. But they don’t ever seem to settle on an approach, and they don’t ever seem to build on any successes. Dan Henning knows how to build off staple plays. Even Paul Hackett knew how to build off staple plays. The Jets just don’t seem to have any coherence to their attack now.
For those interested in the splits, the Jets are 19th in the league in efficiency on 1st down, they’re 2nd in the league on 2nd and short, 5th in the league on 2nd and mid, 31st in the league on 2nd and long, 30th on 3rd and short, 6th on 3rd and mid and 27th on 3rd and long.
30th on 3rd and short is the tell tale stat, completely inexcuseable
More nonsensical Favre exoneration. Schotty makes me pull my hair out, but to completely blame him and then ignore Favre’s terrible decisions is horrendously wrongheaded and reeks of an agenda.
I,ve been saying for the last ten days that once we beat KC we can lose 3 ot of the next nine, go 10-6 and still make the playoffs. Splitting with Buffalo is not the end of the world but we must show that we belong with the big boys starting this Sunday. Farve must perform his best within the game plan, allow the offense to start to gel, feel an Identity, and absolutely must not, can not create momentum killing turnovers. I don’t care if we have to run all day to win. NO TURN OVERS !!!!
I think the people who are all OFFENDED by his article need to go back and read it again. He has some VERY VALID POINTS! He’s ALMOST SPOT ON!
seanmac, one of my other pet peeves is that the Jets don’t have signature plays. The Packer sweep, the Steeler trap, the Redskin counter trey and so on. You sign Faneca, you have TJ, who is a very good interior runner, and the Jets don’t have a signature running play. As for power running going out of style, the Titans offense is positively retro…with that defense and power running game, they could win the Super Bowl. The Jets, I agree, do not have the type of power backs
KC, I agree with you 100%. When I read the first few responses, I couldn’t imagine what this guy was saying. He is right on the button. Shott screwed up Chad and he is torching Favre. If Shott is still here, at the end of the year, he will get Favre killed. We have had a great opportunity, facing horrible competition in the first half. It is a sin to have wasted the opportunity. I also agree that it is not just bad coaching on the Offensive side of the ball. The defense has been ugly. We have the players! We need coaching.
this story is dead on.
Favre hasn’t been perfect, but when you put him in a straitjacket and prevent him from making plays, he is more likely to overdo to compensate.
Schottenheimer and Mangini have found a way to do the oposite of Herm with some similar results.
Herm’s teams had talent, but he was so ultraconservative that he preferred to play not to lose (his famous quote not withstanding… taking a knee before the ill-fated fg at pitt in the playoffs to make it 2-3 yards longer may be the single stupidest play call ever), but these guys are not taking gifts when they are offered.
best example – against san diego, going for 2 pt conversion in second half, chargers commit two penalties giving jets ball at 1/2 yd line.
instead of a run or a sneak to take advantage of the san diego mistakes, the jets line up w/ 5 wides, thereby completely negating the 1 1/2 yd advantage and playing as if they were on the two.
makes no sense.
and this nonsense has been repeated over and over.
Kewpie to bigredjet and and a king sized one to Salfino for the major media article of the year.
Those who want to blame the messenger, you all deserve the tripe everyone else writes. The idea of blaming a writer to correctly analyzing a situation and reporting on it regardless of the consequences is why this country elects morons – most press write balanced articles even when candidates are not balanced.
This Coaching Staff is inept and misusing talent. And, Shott is the worst offender.
Bassett, thanks for sharing the link to this. I would never have seen it otherwise. With Canny and now Michael beginning to shine a light on the ineptitude, perhaps in my lifetime Woody will make some effort to fix things.

Schottenhiemer deserves all the criticism in the world, but we gotta give him the chance at redemption on sunday. If he can put it together, great we go on. If he fails I will personally go along with any Jet fan who wants to run him out of town. This is the BIGGEST game of the year thus far. He failed once at home vs new england, this time he may not get another shot. It’s time for him to get goin or be goin…
schotty was great in year one…
last year we had no line and CP stunk….
now hes got the gunslinger from greenbay…..i think it’s just not clicking as fast as we would have all liked..
i’ll say it again…there WERE PLAYS to be made against oakland….Chris baker fell down with no one near him….that was a game winner…Favre overthrew keller in ot against oakland that would have kept a drive alive…if we win this week and the o improves everything changes….if we don’t and the o continues to struggle…then something has to give
GOD I CANT WAIT FOR SUNDAY!! J-E-T-S JETS! JETS!! JETS!!!
It’s not if you win or lose but how you play the game, right? This Sunday is a perfect opportunity for the Jets to show us what this adage is all about. If the deffense stands up as has been expected this season and the offense controlls the ball, on the ground with our million $ O line and passing with our HOF QB, then we have taken a major step forward towards contending with the big boys on the way to the big prize. Time is running out no doubt, but this Sunday is more critical to show who we really are and prove the adage right.
Maybe the answer is that Mangini and company isn’t that good. For all you Mangini lovers out there, in 2 1/2 years MANGINI and company have only beaten 3, yes only 3 teams with winning records. The question is how many teams with losing records has he lost to? Probably many more than 3.
Odds are that # will stay at 3 after the JETS visit Buffalo on Sunday.I hope I am wrong. But history has a way of repeating itself.
Hank/Naples,
I agree with your last post, except that it doe’s matter if you win or lose. You get into the playoff’s with your record not how you look doing it………….
That was a great article! There are a lot of crappy writers out there but this guy isnt one of them. If you feel this divides the fan base then ask yourself: After the games you’ve watched have you ever read an article that made you feel different about what you saw? OR have you ever changed the way you voted because you saw a little political “vote for me sign?” The media doesn’t divide fan bases… they divide themselves.
Schott is young and creative and he knows the heat is on him so I’m willing to bet we will see something different on sunday and I dont know if it’s going to be good or bad????????
TC:
Except for this:
Winning “ugly” or lucky does’nt happen often. How you play the game gives you the foundation for winning often.
Another adage: You’d rather be lucky than good? Well, I’d rather be good because it gives you a better chance to be lucky. I hope this make sence.
yea we def have to win on Sunday, no moral victories, guys get paid to win in the NFL and its not like these guys are in the first year… nothing but a win is acceptable
Correction:……I hope this makes sense.
Hank/Naples
No disrespect intended at all…….I’d much ,much rather be GOOD than lucky.I understand it doesn’t happen often,But a win is a win and that’s what matter’s.
I’ve watched Favre for year’s and have seen all this before.I think the N.Y. fan’s just haven’t seen alot of his game’s in the past to really understand the way he play’s.
Yes it make’s me want to pull my hair out when he throw’s some of these pick’s but I’ve seen him do this and still pull game’s out and win………..
One note though the colder it get’s the better Favre is,Cause of the running game coming more into play…..Hopefully it come’s into play ALOT tommorow,What’s weather suppose to be like in Buffalo?
Run Alot,Run Hard and Run Fast!!!!!
100% true about the weather, the colder it gets the better favre gets, thats the best thing about him the ability to play well in december and january
awesome article makes great sense….favre wasnt this bad in GB its clearly shottenheimer…please fire him ASAP!!!!!!
