Game Recap: Take Five Steps Forward …

by Andrew Weiss on November 30th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

In the game of Giant Steps, progress is measured by where you are at the end of your turn. If the God of steps says you take three steps forward and one back, it means that you move ahead, but only by moving backwards after you’ve moved ahead. The Jets made such a move over the last few weeks moving into contention for the Super Bowl by going five steps forward. But, today, we learned the cost of our progress as the Denver Broncos made us take one step back. Back, to a contender, but one that knows now that it is not invincible. (more…)

Game Thread Broncos at Jets 11/30/2008

Who: Broncos at Jets (-8.5)
When: 4:15PM EST
Where: Meadowlands, E. Rutherford, NJ
TV: WCBS
Radio: ESPN 1050, WABC 770, NFL FieldPass
Weather: Rainy- 45° F

I will be attending today’s game with an old friend. First drop off the wive’s for a matinee, then go to the game and enjoy the festivities.

On a five game winning streak, coming off the high of beating the league’s last undefeated team, after taking on one of the league’s most formidible defenses the Jets take on one of the league’s most formidible offense. A win today would be another good statement by this team … that they are capable of beating any kind of team and capable of keeping their momentum intact.

Keys to the Game:

  1. Beat the D (Line) — The Broncos are stout up front, but the Jets runners could make loads of yards working against a depleted linebacking corps.
  2. Slow the O — The O-Line and the Broncos passing game are the biggest problems for the Jets. The Jets defensive line needs to win at the line of scrimmage to win this game, and the Jets need to keep the ball out of Marshall and Royal’s hands as much as possible.
  3. A Leon Lift — Leon could have yet another big game in return duty, especially in kickoffs, see if he gets a long return today.
  4. As Always, TURNOVERS– In the streak, the Jets have minimized their turnovers. The Jets have the chance to beat this Denver team long, but they need to be smart about it. See how Favre responds to a temptingly frail secondary.

Jets Run Offense v. Broncos Run Defense – Remember the Bills game? Same situation. The Jets are facing a brutal front four but just beyond those behemoths lies gads of yardage for Thomas and Leon to take against a weak and depleted linebacking corps. The Jets, will put as many bodies on the defensive lineman to focus on opening the holes up front. Look for the Jets to use Chris Baker and Tony Richardson to create room, but also look for the Jets to use their linemen efficiently … like trying to pull guards from one side or to use their “Wild Pig” formation with Robert Turner or Wayne Hunter as blocking Tight Ends.

Eric Barton: Motivational Speaker

by Bassett on November 30th, 2008 at 7:54 am

God bless Kris Jenkins. The man is always good for a quote. When talking this week with JP Pelzman for an article about Eric Barton Kris Jenkins had this to say about his old Terrapin teammate.

“As much as you want to try to guess what he’s going to say, he’s always going to surprise you. And that’s just how he is. He’s been like that since college.”

Jenkins declined to give any examples of Barton’s college high-jinks, saying they would be “too graphic,” but he did offer this insight into his behavior.

Jenkins said, “Barton has actually calmed down a lot. … The closest explanation of what college was like is he was the athletic Chris Farley in real life, without the drugs.”

Ol’ Eric’s gonna be your shadow!!!

Link: Calvin Pace Barks the Yard

by Bassett on November 30th, 2008 at 7:40 am

Calvin Pace now has a Yardbarker Blog where you can friend him and get his updates. Yesterday he wrote some thoughts about his Thanksgiving and about the game this weekend. Here’s a large clipping, but go to Yarbarker to read more.

This is my first year as a member of the Jets after spending the previous 5 years in Arizona and it’s been the time of my life.

This is a special week with it being the week of Thanksgiving. It was extra special to me because it was my daughters first Thanksgiving, I did feel bad for her because she had to sit and watch me eat turkey with all the trimmings and she had to eat baby food….to go along with the ultimate theme of giving back I had the opportunity to help give out turkeys and other groceries to people who were in need and that always makes me feel good and keeps me grounded

We Jets fans are thankful for Calvin Pace for the 52 tackles, five sacks and countless QB pressures. Pace’s presence has made us forget what it was like to have a poorly suited Victor Hobson setting the edge.

JMattera’s Gridiron Grudges – Week 13

by John Mattera on November 28th, 2008 at 10:00 am

1) New York Jets vs. A LETDOWN –

This weekend, the Denver Broncos, a somewhat deceiving division leader comes into the Meadowlands for a game. Yes they are a division leader but their record of 6-5 may not imply that. They have big wins in games against Tampa Bay and Atlanta, but losses at home to Oakland and Miami.

The NYJ on the other hand enter this game on a very hot streak. Two big division road wins against very formidable opponents have the media calling them the best team in the AFC. How will the Jets handle the newfound publicity and media praise? Will they come out with the same intensity as in past weeks or will they come out flat?

I think there is too much veteran leadership in the locker room to allow this happen. Although we can not expect the Jets to play like they played last week consistently, I do expect the Jets to win this football game. Hopefully the motors stay strong and the NYJ can improve their record to 9-3.
