Buzz: Mangini Informed Players Their Roles Weren’t Safe
Posted on November 3rd, 2008 by Bassett
On ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, Rachel Nichols told viewers that Laveranues Coles had related to her that Coach Eric Mangini had informed players that their starting roles weren’t safe, and solely depended on their play.
Was this just a ‘friendly reminder’ to his players or was Mangini starting to feel the collar tighten this past week?

good for him – look how they played…alot of guys have underachived so far….not yesterday
I don’t see anything wrong with giving the players a wake up call. The team as a whole have been inconsistent and needed it.
Mangini dont stop!!!! Keep grabbing this team and take the ball away from FARVE as much as possible now we know how we can play when FARVE SHARES THE BALL. We need to keep running everytime to prove to the league that we are a tough run first team. Mangini go back to the ways of 2006!!!
Nice blocking by Baker on TJ’s TD run. Very happy they kept him on!
can someone please alert peter king that the jets won this week. huge column in si and all he talks about is the bills only offensive touchdown. unreal.
The teams true identity was finally reavealed with its 8:41 min statement the after Farves int. Fonzie was right in that we are and have been a tough run first, pass second team. That drive and the game in general proves that we can beat anyone when we play within Manginis physical, no turnovers, ball control type football. NO MORE GUNSLINGER if we want to continue to build our identity. I have said all year that our defense, NOT FARVE, will lead this team as far as its willing to pay the price. I hope this sis the last time i will say this : Too many fans fans bought into ” FARVE IS THE TEAM AND THE TEAM IS FARVE” and the team, specially the coaching staff, paid dearly for it the last three months. We now have the team we build and supported supported on the right track. Lets all enjoy the ride till the last stop. Who knows, I havent been to Tampa in a while.

He also failed to understand the play. Bowens, a DE for most of his career converted to OLB, was making his first start at MLB, replacing Harris, who usually makes the defensive calls. If you look at the replay, Bowens rushed and then quickly realized he had responsibility for the TE in coverage and tried to run back…but too late.
King made it sound like the Jets were just clueless on the play. How about acknowledging the fact that the Jets were without their D signal caller and leading tackler and still held the Bills to 30 yards on the ground, stuffed them for a game turning 4th &1, and beat them with defense in their own stadium?
ps this is favres team enjoy
With so many new players – even before the most famous one arrived – it was going to take some time for the coaches to figure out how to best use everyone to their best advantage. I’d like to think we got a lot closer yesterday.
Over the first 7 games the Jets learned that Favre, when necessary, can still lead a 4th quarter comeback and ring up TDs quickly like vs. Arizona and the second half in San Diego. It’s nice to know you have that weapon because it will probably be required at some point down the line. But, like any weapon, it’s probably best if you don’t have to use it. If the Jets offense can establish rhythm with a running game, slants, TE seam passes, screens and the odd deep out or skinny post to keep defenses honest, they won’t need to draw from the holster as often.
What will make Favre the upgrade the Jets were hoping for is if he can do what QB’s previously on the roster could and, when called upon, do what they couldn’t.
Rather than assign blame for what went wrong the first seven games, I prefer to think that it was a valuable feeling out and learning experience all the way around and that the lessons might be paying off.
Subwayfare:
It was obvious to anyone that watched the game that we finally won convingcingly by playing to the team strengths and taking the guns away from the “gunslinger”. That my friend is and pray will be our true team Identity. If you are still giving credit to Farve ol’mighty for yesterday’s game then you are blind to ALL the facts written today about the TEAM today.
hank/naples-
You obviously either didn’t read or understand my post. But that’s okay, I often don’t understand yours, either.
Geoff:
Read this:
“That was the biggest part of the acquisitions we made in the off-season,” tight end Chris Baker said of the run game. “It hasn’t become our identity yet. But it should be, with the guys we brought in and the guys we have to run the ball.”
This is Farves’ team???????
Subway you hit the nail on the head. I knew this topic would come up today. We beat Buffalo on the road, and I knew there would be those certain fans who would say it was inspite of Favre. Here’s why we have Favre: To win big games. Period. Just like subway said, his strenght is making the big plays down the stretch of a game. We have not had a QB with this ability in a long time. The Favre bashers just can’t be happy! Like it or not, this is reality: Favre has us at 5-3 and tied for first in the division. At the mid-point of the season the Jets are playing their best ball so far. Also at this point I would even venture to say that the Jets still will get better and the upside for the Jets is higher than any other team in the division.
So to Fonzie and Hank, I have this request: Please give a post describing the positive things Favre has done thus far, and the positives he brings in intangibles. If we only read your posts, one would think that Favre has not done a single thing well this season. I can admit he’s plyed poorly at times, can you admit he’s played well? Let’s see how biased you really are.
Hank, it’s “Favres’” team because he’s the quarterback. That’s what you say when the QB is winning, and his teammates believe in him.
Pete57,
I feel sorry for you. Coming from guy who said “I dont know who will cover James Hardy (6′5″) when we play Buffalo this year.” Yeah I mean Revis made him look so bad even Hardy wished that he wasn’t being thrown to on that play. You have no one to turn to except yourself and your mancrush on FARVE. You still dont give me credit. RUN THE BALL ALL DAY!!!! WE TOOK THE BALL OUT OF FARVE’S HANDS AND WON CONVINCINGLY!!! HOW DO YOU LIKE THOSE APPLES?!!!! FOR THIS I WILL NO LONGER TALK TO YOU AND YOU IGNORANT WAYS OF THINKING!!!
correction: YOUR IGNORANT WAYS OF THINKING!!
Pete57:
The problem I have is like you said… “it’s “Favres’” team because he’s the quarterback. That’s what you say when the QB is winning, and his teammates believe in him”. But when the Jets lose is due to terible play calling, fire the CS.
well unfortunately only the ps got in and not the body of my observation. of course its more than favre but i like the idea that we can score at will. the defence was spectacular (jenkins) and timely d backs jumping routes and capitalizing on pure doughhead stuff by edwards, and i love washington and jones, but farve will ultimately either take us to the promised land or not.
GEOFF,
You mean the defense not FARVE right?
hank/naples and fonzie, you may want to head on over to unconditionalchadloversblog.com.
Seriously its funny with you guys, when we lose its all the gunslinger’s fault, when we win its in spite of him, very fair and even handed of both of you. Hank, I will concede that more people are willing to blame the coaching staff than Favre, but are you willing to admit that Favre has done some good things for this team?
And fonzie, if we were just going to run the ball and play a short controlled passing game we might as wel have kept chad here, which I’m sure would have made you very happy. Fact is we now have a QB that can make ALL the throws (and yes, some bad decisions too) which opens up the run game with the defense having to respect the passing game knowing its no longer just dink and dunk.
You don’t have to love Favre, but you shouldn’t be hating him either, he is our QB for this season, for better or worse, it hasn’t been great so far but to my mind its been more better than worse.
I think the game ball goes to the Defense and special teams, but I just don’t understand dissing Favre’s effort in the win. The Jets only ran the ball for 96 yards, Favre threw for 201. The point has been made (and I’ll make it again) that the Bills played their safeties way off the LOS. So, Favre took what the defense gave him and helped manage the game for a solid win.
I think this game also exposed Buffalo a bit. If the Bills lose to the Pats, they go to 0-3 in the division and, for the most part, will be out of the hunt for the AFC East title. The Jets face a classic trap game on Sunday against the Rams, coming 4 days before that huge game in NE. Let’s take care of business this week. Go 6-3 and play in NE for the AFC East lead. Whether you’re a Favre fan or not, this team is real close to being something special. Let’s enjoy this because we haven’t been this close since 2004.
I’m on the side of subwayfare and the others who defend him. Favre has the ability to make throws that, in some games, aren’t necessary, like in Buffalo. Their two deep defenders were WAY back and stayed there. That was to our advantage in the short pass game. Previously, without mentioning names, that wouldn’t have happened. So, whether we use Favre or not, it’s a game by game decision, but one I’m glad to have.
The blame goes all around for what happened the past weeks. NO TEAM could have played consistently the way that Favre played AND the way the offense was run. The Jets found that happy medium that made it go yesterday. Remember Elway the last few years in Denver? He wasnt 26 year old Elway throwin it 50 times any more. He had that great running game with T Davis with the effective passing game with R Smith and Eddie Mac. They just lined up and made plays. That 35 yard dart to J CO, HUGE PLAY. Did he have to throw 50 times? nope. Mix in TJ, who is running like he stole something right now, and LEON and everything clicks. We dont have RANDY MOSS, we dont have BRADY, we got a bunch of real good players that when they play off one another make up a real dangerous unit. Our offense isnt gonna be the one vs Arizona, the team I would rather go to war with was the one out there yesterday in Buffalo. Everybody just pulling there own weight, worrying about their job.
Brett is our guy, and I know he isnt playin his best right now, but there is gonna come a time when we need him to put a throw on someone, a throw Chad cant make, and hes gonna do it. Yesterday was the first time you saw the Jets come out on offense and look as if they had an idea of exactly how they were gonna attack. The credit for that has to go to Schottenhiemer. Everybody on that team had a part in that win yesterday and thats why EVERYONE deserves the retribution right now
billvv-
To be fair, I’ll defend or criticize Favre as results dictate. And wins are the results that matter most to me. He’s made some bonehead plays and put the team in a dangerous hole a few times. I was lukewarm at best on the signing but couldn’t, and still can’t, deny his upside as being higher than that of any QB previously on the roster if channelled correctly. I always thought it would take some time for he and the CS to figure out the best use of his talents and yesterday was a good example of right approach for the circumstances. That exact game plan won’t work every week against every team and they’ll have to let him attack deep at times to keep safeties and DBs away from the LOS, but the CS and the players – including #4 – all deserve credit for a good marriage of play-calling and execution.
Geoff/sec108:
I have very strong opinion about Farve as a person but I don’t hate him, I don’t hate anyone.
If you have read my comments fron the day we got him, you would ‘ve read that Farve would bring one maybe two more wins to the Jets. I also stated that after all offseason aquisitions and BF(before Farve) that our team could go 10-6 WC (with Chad) and posibly make the playoffs.
However I and a handful of fans on this blog including Fonzie, did not swallow all the hype spewed by his worshipers and the suck-up media. We felt all along that the team lost more than what it gained when that guy Woody threw Pennington under the bus for a few PSL’s. Being a diehard fan like the rest of you it irritates me that most worshipers would tear the team by firing the coaches and dissing Pennington rather than look at their hero objectively and see how dysfuntional the offense has been most of it due to his defficiences.
I mean when, if ever, these guys would wake up to the fact that is was the defense first, running game second along with mistake free( almost) ball control game plan that won yesterday and that will gave this team it’s sorely needed Identity. And whether you admit it or not it WAS done by, like Fonzie has been saying, taking the ball out of Farve’s hands, and keeping it on the groud for 8:41 minutes in the 4th qtr.
hank, c’mon, there were some key passes on that clock killing, game clinching drive as well, and like Sack and others have pointed out, the reason the underneath game was so open was the fact that the defense had to respect favre and take away the deep ball.
Look, I’m no favre apologist, and I never considered him the savior, and I too was aprehensive about him coming here. Chad was a great QB for this franchise, and one of the most respected players we ever had, but his time had run its course here. I too thought we were a 9 or 10 win team with the improvements we had made, without Favre, but now that I see what he can bring to this team I realize he can take us beyond where we could go with Chad. There will be moments in the season (and hopefully the playoffs) where we need to rely on our QBs arm for a win, maybe be are down 10-14 pts late in the 4th and need some quick strike drives, when your QB has to throw when everyone else knows he does. Thats what separates them to me, Chad is great when you have a lead, a good defense and a running game, but you don’t always have that, sometimes you need a little Favre. He certainly is no savior, and definitely not the whole team, but he gives me some hope just the same.
It’s simplistic to say the Jets won because they took the ball out of Favre’s hands. Nor did they. Schott remembered the play action pass and the quick slants, which Favre can deliver to a receiver in stride as well as anyone. And, clearly, the communication between Favre and the receivers took a leap forward, as bound to happen eventually considering Favre has only been with the team for half the season. Additionally, the pass protection was excellent against a top, heavy rushing defense. This game, for a change, he had time.
Favre’s presence also helps the running game. It was noted that the Bills’ DBs were playing off. Whether or not he completes a pass over the top is only half the point. The Bill know that he CAN, and therefore they can’t stack the box as they did with Chad.
okay, after sending my post one minute after sec 108, my points are somewhat redundant. I’m glad to see others noted the same.
Well said eddie. I agree on your Elway comparison too. Favre managed the game nearly perfect. it was a pleasure to not be screaming at my TV set like last week. Lets hope that stop on 4th down is to the Jets what the goal line stance against the Redskins was to the Giants last year….
When we win “Farve manages the game almost perfect. ” Digusting game plan, terible plays called, let Farve be Farve etc fire the coaches, etc, etc. when we lose. Sorry guys, even if we run for over 200 yds you will still credit Farve for brillant game management even if he throws knucklehead INT’s.
Correction… forgot to sign above comments.
Hank
Hank – you are absolutely correct. You forgot to sign the above comments…
(psych!)
Hank, I think you are accusing some of us fans of having a “crush” on Favre, when it is not true. It is the other way around. It’s not that we give him too much credit, it’s that you give him none. I have criticized Favre, and so has just about everyone else, but you have never complimented his play. I really believe you are the one who is biased, not the rest of us.
Side note to Fonzie: I have never made a comment about James Hardy. There is a poster on this site called simply “Pete”. Possibly you were mistaken.
My man Bubby B,
Yea it was either the Elway comparison or Montana but I went with Elway because they won it all! I guess even when we have a legend people will still want more. Just what I can’t understand is why the hankster can’t see that Schottenhiemer obviously changed his approach yesterday. The offense was where it was because he was trying to do quantum physics out there and all we needed was basic chemistry. I mean i guess you could say it was more conservative but we only ran for 98 yards. It worked because there was BALANCE. Because when they went to something they used it and saw it through til it was time to do something else. That is how rythym and tempo is established. That is how 5 yrd slants turn into 30 yards of YAC. That wasnt conservative, smashmouth football, it was balanced delibrate offensive play calling, run A to setup B, once we establish A and B, we can run C. Its that simple.
I guess people have the right to feel whatever they want about Favre. But the truth is the guy could hang it up right now and he is set for life. But he’s here, with us, busting his ass to try to make us a winner. Every guy in the locker room loves him. He has taken a beating out there and he keeps getting up. Have you ever seen him once show up his line after a few obvious dismal efforts? He’s accountable for every mistake he’s made out there. That pick yesterday was because the back missed the blitz pickup, brett got drilled and it took something off the throw. If he doesnt get hit, that ball is incomplete or J CO gets it. What does he do?; he rallys the troops for a short FG and we win. What hank refuses to understand is that its Schottenhiemer’s job to put his players in the best position to suceed. His offensive approach and play selection had not only 99% of the fans agitated but his own players too. There was not one football expert who agreed that Bri Schot was giving a satisfactory effort. He and Favre needed to meet somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately for him ,Favre has the track record so B Schot gets most of the blame. Yesterday he called the game as if there was a rhyme and reason, not lets spin the magic wheel and whatever play it lands on lets do it. Hank wanted Favre to play within the gameplan, but there was no gameplan. Yesterday there was one, and we saw the results.
Chad had taken us as far as he was gonna take us, this trade had to be made because this organization owed it to us to bring in a HOF QB who could be the unquestioned leader. Lets face it, the Jet players knew Chad had limitations. Now they know that they have a guy who can make any throw, anywhere on the field. It instantly makes the whole offense more dangerous. Truth of the matter is there is gonna come a time when we are gonna need Brett to put it on someone or make someone pay by going deep. In the Arizona game we established our downfield passing game. Yesterday we established what we can do when they take away the deep ball. Now defenses are gonna have to pick there poison. With Brett we can now do both, and god bless him but that is something that Chad could never do. All we have to do now is continue to mature and gel as a unit, sit back and enjoy the show!!!!!!!!!
Pete57,
You are right on the money. He has never once said something good about him without some remark. All he does is rip on him about his addiction to painkillers 15 years ago, like that’s funny. The guy is our HOF starting QB that has instantly given us credibility and he acts like we’re all idiots for rooting for him. He acts like it’s Mangini and Schottenhiemer vs Favre, meanwhile they are the guys who traded for him. You think they dont KNOW they need him. As soon as Brett considered the trade over here, the deal could not have happened quicker and Chad was gone. Hank would rather be RIGHT about Favre then see the Jets WIN with him…
I’m guessing Hank is the anti-STYNE. His hate on all things Favre is similar to Johnny Styne’s hate on all things Chad.
Yup, we’ve got an ecclectic bunch on this site. But you’ve gotta love (and respect) the different points of view, right?!
But we all dod agree on one thing…
J-E-T-S! Jets! Jets!! Jets!!!
