Note, we’ll be running a chat again today at 2PM. Look forward to seeing you then!
The Daily News reports this morning that the Jets are interested in DeAngelo Hall now that he’s passed through the waivers process.
Sources say the Jets are also taking a look at the free-agent cornerback. Hall is looking for a long-term situation, which would make the Jets a longshot. They have two young corners, Darrelle Revis and Dwight Lowery, although Lowery was benched in last week’s game.
I love the kid, but it’s hard to say definitively what Dwight Lowery will be, so I doubt that’s what will limit the Jets front office. They traded for Brett Favre this summer … didn’t they?
Hall is 24 years old, already in his fifth year in the league and has 20 career interceptions and 49 passes defensed so far. Adding Hall would be a nice pickup to say the least. Hall was picked on this year in Oakland playing across from Nmandi Asamougha, but I think the Jets are smart enough to figure out a way to make someone like Hall successful.
Hall has made it clear through his agent he’s looking to join up with a team that is in contention for the playoffs.
Joel Segal, who represents Hall, didn’t talk specifically about which teams Hall might be interested in, but indicated fairly strongly that Hall would be looking to hook on with a contender.
“Right now we’re meeting with DeAngelo, going over some scenarios, taking it a day at a time,” Segal said last night. “We’re looking for a situation where he can help a team for the playoff drive.”
Asked if Hall would insist on going to a team that had a shot in the postseason, Segal replied: “It’s certainly not mandatory, but it’s a strong consideration.”
In the larger picture, there’s so many other teams in the mix it might be hard for the Jets to work out a contract that would be pleasing to Hall. The Redskins, Patriots, Steelers and Giants are also interested in him.

Why not? Who says Lowery’s growing into anything other than a guy who played 3 good games? Most cornerbacks enter their prime about 5 or 6 years into the league at the age of 27 or 28. Hall is 5 years in and is only 24. Which shocked me at first. I say sign him to a deal, if he’ll sign cheaper than he did for oakland.

Mangini and Rob Ryan are close. If the Jets are truly interested in Hall it would mean Ryan has assured the CS that the kid is coachable and might even be more of an an indication that Ryan will be the DC coaching him in NY next year.
If he can be coached play at the top of his abilities and Lowery goes to the slot and some strong safety where the Jets are soft, it could mean a big upgrade in the secondary.
But if he’s too much of a head case for Al Davis, how much faith can you have in the guy?
-
I would say at this point, the Jets have put a lot of money into making this a successful season. You don’t check on the river with a 6 card straight flush. Push em all in and see what happens. Go get Hall and let the veterans on defense whip him into shape. He’ll fall in line.

@subwayfare
I doubt anyone is too much of a headcase for Al Davis. Davis merely cut Hall to free up cap space in yet another lost season.
Hall is known as a me-first player. I think Hall will be an upgrade but do we really want a me-first player on the team?
On the other side, our 2nd CB (whomever he may be) has not been very productive opposite Revis.
Just some considerations.
-
Didn’t they already try this reclaimation project with Batman Carroll? Perhaps they want Hall to be just a good special teamer…(sic)
-
If we got D. Hall our defense would be in the words of T.O. ” unnnnnnnnnnnstopable”. Our weakest link is covering the slot reciver. Hall should be able to do that very nicely and if Lowery doesnt work out guess what… we have Hall..
Subway…
Your getting way to ahead of your self with the Rob Ryan thing… I dont think hes on the phone with Mangini making plans and personel decisions for next year.. Take a chill pill.. -
u would be suprised and i could definately see ryan taking a look at our defense and our organization and saying to himself hmmm this might be a nice place to be this year….i think sutton again has become a puppet of mangini i really dont like him as our dc….
if hall is on a winning team and put in the right locker room i would say he will behave… the only thing that scares me is letting a 24 yo who is somewhat of a headcase loose in nyc…..
if we could turn him around like the pats did randy moss this could be a huge pick up for our secondary…
how we can afford it i have no idea….but i dont think it will happen anyway….
and i honestly think we have a better chance of landing
ryan than hall -
correction –
nice place to be NEXT year -
I’d like to see Lowery at safety and bringing in Hall to play opposite Revis. That combo could be our best secondary ever!?!
-
get Hall now!!!
-
Many sources were reporting Ryan was coming to the Jets last year when he and Kiffin had issues but Davis wouldn’t let him out of his contract. The fact that Davis didn’t give him the HC slot when Kiffin was fired all but assures Ryan is out of there at the end of the season. Unless someone offers him a HC job it’s almost a foregone conclusion he replaces Herm holdover Sutton.

All of you guys who are considering hall,
Do you think Hall is that much better than Lowery football wise. Does Hall demand as much space as Lowery in coverage. I dont think so. We are starting to build an identity on defense we are not the Patriots defense nor are we the Patriots. We need to build a team of strong character guys and on defense we need guys who are solid all around. I think Lowery knows much more football in his first year than Deangelo learned when he was with atlanta. Some of you guys consider him a solution at the 2nd cornerback position and move Lowery to the slot but remember we are building our secondary. Lowery is following in the same steps as Revis did last year and will continue to improve. We cant buy championships we must build CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS. Lowery in my mind is a better TEAM player than hall is and provides much more to the position than Hall does.
-
In other words,
Who does FARVE think he is? I will only be a game manager if it helps us win? DOES HE THINK HE IS THE TEAM?!! He is nuts!! Thats right FARVE eat your words as your days of gunslinging are being limited everyday as you are forced to learn the playbook like a kid who wants an A on a test must sit down and study for hours and hours.
-
have you guys forgot that hall is terrible? remmeber when he singlehandedly lost atlanta that game to carolina last year? im not saying hall isnt talented, but hes a cancerous me first player, dont take my word for it, ask his last 2 teams, that couldnt get rid of him fast enough.
i obviously hope he doesnt go to the pats because he is talented, but i dont want him either. to quote singletary “id rather play with 10 players and get penalized until somehting happens”
-
Yikes! D. Hall is becoming the best guy that nobody wants. Million dollar talent, ten cent head. Kinda reminds me of a defensive version of Jeff George….or dare I say, Starbury.
-
I don’t think Hall is going to sing a long term deal with anyone. He should come in on a one year thing, prove his worth, and then make a killing in FA.
If that is the case, then he would be a great fit because he would be on his best behavior.
Hey, lets not forget that we rolled the dice with many of the offseason moves this year and they are pretty much all working…
-
Personally, I don’t want him on the team, he is a headcase and a selfish player. Plus he is the most overrated CB in the league. He is very aggressive and gets beat for it from time to time.
-
D Hall is absolute team cancer. He has overrated himself into thinking hes Deion Sanders and has gotten picked on by QB’s and WR’s for the last 2 years. What do you think will happen if we sign him? Revis is just as good as Asamougha. He also dosnt have the biggest thing a good CB needs. A short memory!!! He lets his emotions gets the best of him and is a selfish player. Let him go to Baltimore….they loves headcases like him.
-
Reprocity and Subway,
I like what I hear. Next year’s team with Ryan as DC; Favre behind Center; a secondary featuring: Rhodes (S), Lowery (S), Revis (CB) and Hall (CB).
This way we can draft Georgia Bulldawgs: Knowshon Moreno (RB) and Dannell Ellerbe (ILB) for the best defense in the league.
I love it when a plan comes togther!!!
-
I don’t think there is money to even consider Hall. And IF there were, I don’t think they’d spend it this late in the year.
-
If we wanted to sign an overpriced CB who sucks we should go sign an old Ty Law. He can at least tackle and is friendly with Revis. Leave Lowery alone he is good enough. Barrett and Poteat can rotate in to help. D Hall is horrible. Just check the stats on this guy
-
Anyone else notice that Fonzie nearly got through a post on an article about CBs without a Favre thrashing? So close…
-
if the jets want to improve their defense then they should sign Hall
-
Assume the Jets always want to improve, on O or D, how does Hall qualify as an improvement?
-
if another team gets him and he plays good then we are going to regret not signing him
-
Along with 31 other teams including the one that cut him. He isn’t worth the baggage. We wanted character guys why screw that up for Meangelo Hall?
-
If we want to spend the money wait until the offseason and get Asomugha. He is a special player wth him and revis we would have the best D.
-
The Raiders spent $8 million and a second-round pick to get CB MeAngelo Hall, because of Al Davis. It was a business move, not a football decision.
In short, Hall didn’t fit Raider’s defense. Does he fot Jets? Dunno. But, seems Tangini has an interest, so perhaps?
The Black Hole should move back to LA, beacuse Raiders have become the NFL equivalent to the La Brea tar pits – just ask Randy Moss.
Ironically, Al Davis used to collect 1st round misfits and make it work. Now, he creates them. Hall will be a good reclamation for some NFL team. The question is, does hit fit the Jets?
-
you make a good point Dean, Oakland has some good players and they still cant win, Players that go to play for the raiders dont do good, just ask Randy Moss
The jets should get Hall, i think he would play good here in New York
-
Buzz: Bent (having seen him in person on Sunday) NOT interested in Hall.
-
Hall might have the interceptions on his resume but he also has a lot of blown coverages. I remember a few years back he had “rivalries” with TO and Ochocinco both of whom blew past him on several occasions. Idk if we want the boom-or-bust type. Plus, Revis and Rhodes are the stars here– think Hall would mind being second or even third banana?
-
Subwayfare,
Yea,I noticed!! To funny…………….. -
Redskins got him. This chat is over. I’m just glad he isn’t a Pat.
-
Dean, how exactly do we draft Knowshon ?
-
sec314,
“With the _______ pick in the 2009 NFL draft the New York Football Jets select Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia.”
- Commissioner, Roger Goodell
-
Fonzie:
You noticed you almost, just almost got a smidgen of a compliment? Nah, I don’t think so.
-
When people are right, people are right and the Fonz is correct on this one. Its when you have crack pot biased opinions like “chad is better than Favre or ridiculous inapplicable to pro football anecdotes like “it’s not whether you win or lose it’s how you play the game” when playing a divisional foe for first place, that people will tend to not take your opinion seriously
-
If he comes cheap there is no reason why we shouldn’t try him out. If he plays as well as he played against us we should get more pressure on the QB and get more blitzes.

By signing Hall the Jets are messing up Lowery’s growth at the cornerback position. Another big mistake if they look at the price tag instead of what the true value TO THE TEAM the player is.
