Today the Jets play against the Rams at home. The Rams are gaining some steam under new/old coach Jim Haslett, who has the team 2-2 after a winless start.

Keys to the Game:

  1. Spread Out! — The Jets won’t have to worry so much about keeping extra blockers in to run the ball so look for the Jets to try and use lots of receivers split from the formation but mix up the run and the pass from those formations all the same.
  2. Unkown Runners – Two of the Rams best contributors to the run game are out, so it’s hard to know what Samkon Gado, Kenneth Darby and Pittman can contribute. Based on how they play will determine whether the Rams can be competitive.
  3. Turnovers – In the two games that the Rams won against the Skins and Boys, they were +6 in turnovers. The Jets can ill-afford to give the ball over to this hungry team
  4. Comes to Kicks — If it comes down to field goals … then that’s a bad thing … don’t put your money on Jay Feely. The Rams have one of the best kickers in the league and are 14-16 while the Jets are just 12-17 for the season.

Jets Run Offense v. Rams Run Defense – The Rams have been terrible this year against the run. Jim Haslett is working to improve this facet of the team, but it’s not going so well so far. Even in the team’s two wins (over WAS & DAL) they allowed for 100+ yard rushers in Marion Barber and Clinton Portis. The Jets running game has gotten well quickly, although their not heaping up yards in stacks. This is a game where the Jets can and should run the ball ont the Rams seemingly at will. The line should be able to create the necessary holes and blocks to free their runners into the second level, easily gaining favorable chunks of yardages against down and distance without putting too many extra hats (Fullbacks, Tight Ends, Wayne Hunter) into the box to do so, freeing up options in the passing game.

Jets Pass Offense v. Rams Pass Defense – The Rams have a decent pass rush, and it’s all about the talent up front. Leonard Little, Chris Long and Adam Carriker make up three of the front four. As easy as it should be for the Jets to run the ball with less blockers, it will also allow for more spread-ish formations for Favre and Schottenheimer … something the Rams haven’t defended well against this year. Look for the Jets to get mismatches in the slot and try to take advantage of those on passing plays. Dustin Keller and Chansi Stuckey might see more catches this week on quick crossing routes, slants, etc. Look for the Jets to give up around two sacks today.

Jets Run Defense v. Rams Run Offense - The Rams run offense is one of the best in the league with Steven Jackson and Travis Minor, but both are out of commission for today. Jackson and Minor have played well despite their line, so look for the running game to have a tough time getting going against Kris Jenkins and company. The Rams might try to help their running backs with extra blockers to get some openings in the running game. Look for them to try and play outside the tackles as best they can.

Jets Pass Defense v. Rams Pass Offense – We could see sacks coming in bunches today. The Jets are going to face a running game that’s unsure of itself without it’s starter, and the Rams pass defense has been bad this year, lagging in the bottom third of the league. The Jets could have a field day pressuring Mark Bulger if they keep the Rams in longer down and distance on third downs. The Jets have not been able to adjust to Tight Ends in the passing game this season. Look to see if the Jets can provide some fixes today in this area.

Special Teams – The Rams have the more consistent kicking game, so look to see if this factors into the game today. The Rams kick return team has problems, so if/when the Jets get the chance to return today, look for Leon to break one long.

    1. I remember Ken Darby from College. I hope they play the other guy. Historically, we have made back-up runners look like OJ. I hope Kris is healthy and durable.

    2. Given his performance to date, a clever staff would activate Clowney over Keller. Keller has not been able to stretch the field. Nor has anyone else for that matter. I suspect Eric will not give Clowney a chance all year in spite of the fact, I suspect, he could be our most valuable receiver because everyone else on this team, Eric’s BS to the contrary, is more of a possession receiver.

  2. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

You really think they should deactivate DK? We can’t we need two tight ends to run our offense. But Im with you with the clowney deal. The guy needs some run out there, his preseason warrants at least the oppurtunity to show whether or not he can get it done .

  3. avatar Bent says:

His preseason showed tremendous promise, but he never even got the chance to show whether he could get open against first stringers.

Sometimes, Keller IS stretching the field even when he doesn’t catch the ball.

They’ve announced already: Clowney is inactive, so you’ll have to wait a little longer. If the Jets lose today, I doubt it will be because Clowney was inactive, though.

  4. avatar Mel31602 says:

Well the list came out and Clowney is inactive along with Miller. No other real surprises though. Jackson is out for the Rams.

  5. avatar DannyMazz says:

We need to make a statement in the AFC east today.

  6. avatar ILUVBRETT says:

I THINK THAT THE TEAM LOOKS BETTER IN THE OLD COLOR. ALSO BRETT PLAYED BETTER IN THE OLD COLORS. THE GREEN AND WHITE ARE SO BORING. THINK OF THE APPAREL THAT YOU WILL SELL BECAUSE OF BRETT. PLEASE CHANGE THE COLORS NOW IN HONOR OF BRETT FARVE!!!!

  7. avatar Harvlis says:

Tricky play, with Favre pump faking – 20 yards.

    Vanilla run – 2 yards.

  8. avatar Harvlis says:

Awesome run by TJ. Now we’re playing!

  9. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Great drive. TJ is running possessed, the line looks good, and some big catches by JCO and LC. Favre looks real good…

  10. avatar DannyMazz says:

    NICE

  11. avatar DannyMazz says:

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT

  12. avatar dave says:

Cody Spencer, another great special teams tackle…keeping them on the 11 yrd line!

….elam looks good too, i guess

  13. avatar Michael says:

Okay, we’re up by more than two scores. All we should do is feed it to Jones and Washington, control the clock, and get out without a serious injury.

  14. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

We can’t do that until we’re up by 24 or more, one big play to Avery or Holt and they are back in it.

  15. avatar Joe B. says:

I never want to see “Eric Smith and “start” in the same sentence again. ABRAM ELAM, SON!

  16. avatar Joe B. says:

Quite the first half for my man TJ so far as well!

  17. avatar Eirias says:

@ Michael: With the way they are playing, giving it to Jones and Washington IS going for the jugular.

  18. avatar Michael says:

We’re getting very good starting field position today.

  19. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Hell yes Joe B i was thinking the same exact thing, Eric Smith does not belong in the NFL. He doesnt even deserve a roster spot because he cant play specials and god knows he cant cover or stop anyone.

  20. avatar Michael says:

Okay, this is starting to get ridiculous. Another Rams TO?

  21. avatar Big Bad Bob says:

The players better not get a big head from this game, otherwise things could get real bad on thursday

  22. avatar Joe B. says:

LMAO. First you say to cut Brad Smith right before his big game against Oakland, now you want to deactivate Keller. He hasn’t done anything today at all. Nice calls.

  23. avatar Joe B. says:

Feely good from 46, 49 and 55. Check the sky for pigs!!! This is unreal.

  24. avatar Bent says:

Hey, don’t laugh at him, give him a kewpie for the reverse jinx. Keep it up Harlan!

Anyone for tennis? Jets holding serve, up forty-love…

  25. avatar rasmusbach says:

haha yeah awesome first comment. you have usually got very insightful oppinions and comments, harlan, but you propably could not have been more wrong on that second point if you tried

  26. avatar Michael says:

I really hope they put Clemens in. We’re up by 37 and there’s no reason to risk injury. Besides, all he should be doing is handing it off anyways.

  27. avatar Joe B. says:

I agree with Michael. I hope once the fourth quarter rolls around, they starting resting guys.

  28. avatar johnl says:

please take all the starters out .NOW

  29. avatar Joe B. says:

POTEAT! These guys force turnovers in bunches, eh? Hopefully they don’t go back into a drought on Thursday.

  30. avatar Harvlis says:

John, I totally agree — GET THE STARTERS OUT IMMEDIATELY!!!! Mangini has no clue. I’m sorry. We have the players but, the coaching staff is hurting, big time. Up 40-3, there is no reason for Favre to be in the game. No reason that Mangold had to go back in. Where is Gholston? Even in a blowout game, this coaching staff gives me a headache!

  31. avatar Drew says:

This game is a perfect example of why J Miller and Coleman should stay on the bench. Lowery and Poteat just make plays. The other 2 just make mistakes!

  32. avatar Drew says:

Why is favre still in the game? WOW Keller is awesome!!

  33. avatar dave says:

Farve’s having a blast. Let him finish this game out, go into Thrusday with a groooooove and a half.

  34. avatar Marianne from Belford Ferry says:

Jets up 47 to 3. in the last quarter why is Favre still in the game? Why is the whole 1st string still in the game with a short week,\.

PS Ray, where is my cakepan.
    Marianne from Belford

  35. avatar DanBreen says:

Nice win, way to take care of business – but it’s “game on” Thursday night. If the Jets can get that one, we can start thinking about a deep playoff run…

I have no idea why Mangini has gone with his starters this long.

  36. avatar Michael says:

Speaking of which, Pats beat the Bills, so were set up for a battle for first place on Thursday!

  37. avatar Joe B. says:

Freakin’ lucky Dolphins held on by the skin of their teeth, so much for getting some separation in this division.

  38. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

What a win. Thursday night is our official coming out party. It’s gonna be armageddon.
What a job by TJ and the o line. TJ should be in Honolulu this winter.
What a job by the defense. We need to cut Eric Smith on tuesday. We need a roster spot and he doesnt deserve to be on the team.
This win was awesome and we are really turning the corner. I really have to give Schottenhiemer alot of credit. I was highly critical of him and Im pretty sure Mangini gave him a kick in the @$$ but he’s come through these past few weeks. He’s really putting everyone in a position to be sucessful. Before we had an offense that couldnt find any rythym. Now we establish the running game and play off of playaction. The 2rb 2wr and te set has really helped us and Brett is being more careful while still findin guys. This team is clickin right now and has great chemistry

  39. avatar Harvlis says:

Joe B, We keep on winning and it won’t make a difference. Our players are coming together. We saw it start, last week, and the Rams were just the team to get our confidence going, before playing the Pats. We have a nice running game, although I wish we had some depth. Favre is starting to establish Dustin Keller, who could be an important factor, in our drive to the playoffs. I can’t wait for Thursday. If we beat the Pats, how great will the game against an undefeated Tennesee be, after a long week off. Life is good, when your team is in the mix. Go Jets.

  40. avatar Kirk says:

Great to see Nick Mangold came back in the game. Hopefully he’s fully okay as the rest of the team seemed fully relaxed, happy and gelling throughout the game.

We will be a much better team Thursday night than we were on September 14. With our D doing a great job every week, and Favre mastering the playbook on his way into a nationally-televised and chilly game (two elements in which he thrives), we can feel great about our chances. For the past two seasons, we’ve played our best games agains the Pats on their home turf.

  41. avatar Reprocity says:

Great game! ok coaching! Thank god for our Rund D and Run O!

  42. avatar James in TN says:

Bye Nuge, hello Feely. The run was awesome. The D was tremendous. Bring on the cheating bastages on Thursday.
    GO JETS!!!!!!!

  43. avatar RS says:

Actually Gado was on Miami and had “sporatic” days last season but really didn’t put up a hastle neither did the rest of the team… Speaking of the Cheatriots, I’ll be up in hostile country this Jet fan is going to stick out and those Pats fans who can’t stand us suck it up.

  44. avatar Comment deleted says:

I think this was probably a joke too, but not appropriate for this site, so it’s gone… – Bent

    (Ignore the reactions below).

  45. avatar johnl says:

Hey new england idiot murderer GET OUT OF THIS ROOM NOW and go give your sissy quarterback a hug because the only reason he is not playing now is the fact that he got his FEELINGS hurt when he lost the super bowl and he does not want to GO THROUGH another LOSS! BOO-HOO TOM BRADY BOO-HOO….GET OUT OF HERE YA BUM!!!!

  46. avatar Fred says:

“Jets-fan murderer” (What are you, five?)

What part of RS’s comment was insulting? Let’s break it down, shall we? he said “cheatriots”. Wow, im sure as a Patriot fan you’ve never heard someone make fun of spygate. And oh yea, it was against the JETS who the PATS cheated against. You come into OUR stadium, and insult OUR team and OUR FANS. Or are you offeneded when he said “suck it up”? I think you just need to take a lap and lose your internet privledges for a little while.

  47. avatar Liam says:

and the award for least cool/most psychotic jetsblog post of all time goes to . . . jets fan murderer. [polite applause] unfortunately jets fan murderer wasn’t allowed to be here at tonight’s awards since we are all sort of afraid that he wants to kill us.

  48. avatar Joe B. says:

I think (or at least hope) that Jets-Fan Murderer is actually someone who dislikes Boston and is poking fun at the psyche of the Pats fan. Might be just wishful thinking, but it was so over the top, I have to figure it was a joke.

  49. avatar Fred says:

It’s kind of sad to think that he’s just sitting at his computer clicking “refresh” every seconds waiting for a vulnerable jets post.

  50. avatar hank/naples says:

    Reprocity;

Who do think got the team to where they are at AND where they are going? Whats the matter, you don’t lioke what’s goimg o? We are in a playoff race. C’mon man give the CS a break.

  51. avatar dave says:

It was hard not to spit fire at this team early on, but looking at our sideline today and it’s hard not see that this team has finally got some chemistry; not just on the field, but with one another on the bench. Regardless of what happens in the coming weeks, it was great to see those guys executing and enjoying the hell out of it.

being said, a win this Thursday and we’re staring down a wide-lane highway to playoffs.

  52. avatar EddieC says:

okay, lets move on and ignore the comment that has no place being here on this website…

we’ve GOT to be impressed today with our team

one thing that worries me- i did not see favre really mesh with our 2 WRs that will be necessary in the later games…we have a TOUGH schedule ahead whether people say it or not: NE, Undefeated Titans, Broncos (who knows what they are really capable of), Buffalo, Miami

we are through with the easy part of our schedule. we are about to see what our Jets are made of…

predicted record for the next 7 games?

  53. avatar jay pee says:

  55. avatar Jets-Fan Murderer says:

I hate to see my comment was deleted. Of course I was being ridiculous. We all know pats fans would break their limp wrists if they struck a Jets fan.

  56. avatar JOSE THE JET says:

AND NOW THE REAL FUN BEGINS ON THURSDAY. FOR FIRST PLACE!!!!
