Breaking News: Jets Sign…Ty Law???

I half-expected this to be a link from The Onion, but nope … Adam Schefter reports that ex-Pats and Jets CB Ty Law is returning to the Jets having signed for the rest of the season. Law had ten interceptions for the Jets as they went 4-12 under Herm Edwards in 2005. He was last seen playing for Herm’s Chiefs last season.
Note that he IS expected to play on Thursday.
Law will play a “corner-safety hybrid” role for the Jets, and Law seems eager to join the Jets for his second time. When asked whether or not he felt ready for the challenge of coming in cold against his former team, Law didn’t skip a beat.
“I know they’re going to throw at me, but I welcome the challenge — bring it. I got the tricks for you.”
It is the latest chapter in the border war between New York and New England. Those were the two teams that continued to pursue Law throughout the off-season. The Patriots remained in [contact] with Law up until Monday, and the Saints weighed in to see if they could lure Law to New Orleans. But Law opted Monday to play with New York, where his first game back with the Jets will be against the Patriots.
“I just feel better about this and the direction this team is going and how they welcomed me,” said Law, who spent the 2005 season with the Jets. “I wanted to be somewhere I wanted.”
Law definitely is wanted in New York, where he will be a teammate of Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, who grew up in the same town as Law — Aliquippa, Pennsylvania — and Revis viewed him as a mentor.
“That’s my little boy,” said the 34-year-old Law. “I’ve watched him grow up and to be able to help him now, it’ll be a good deal. He’s wearing No. 22, and he’s representing me. He’s a stud, and it’s going to be more of a pleasure to watch him grow.”
Wow. Although it’s not likely a huge payday for Law, it feels like a coup for the Jets to beat out the Patriots for a free agent. The Jets are serious about trying to contend this season, and maybe missing out of DeAngelo Hall touched a nerve? It’s an area that the Jets feel needed addressing … and although the secondary has improved from the start of the season, they’re right to address it if they’re serious about putting together a postseason berth and run. Their group is middling, but Tight Ends have been the Jets downfall, so maybe a slowing Ty Law can be schemed to shut down opposing Tight Ends.
Did Law just say that Revis is going to wear #22 now? Did he mean in the past? Hmm … not clear about that one, and not sure that came out right from Law. Law is notorious for wearing #24, but since that’s Revis’ number, there might be an issue with that.
So where will the roster spot come from? Is Nugent ready to return to the field? The team might not be rushing him back whilst Feely is nailing 55 yard kicks and being named the ST player of the week. If it’s a defensive back that gets cut, you have to wonder who will go. Ahmad Carroll? Drew Coleman or Justin Miller? David Barrett or Hank Poteat? Of that whole group, the only wrong move in my mind would be in releasing Poteat, who’s been a solid backup who can make plays. If this signing is an indictment on anyone’s play (or lack thereof) it’s Coleman and/or Miller.
Hat tips to Scott and Mel31602 and Evan G. …

I say why not. More veteran leadership in the D. It can’t hurt, can it?
-
its prob depth plus hes a mentor to revis (and could become one to lowery)
don’t like it though, our d was just getting going, dont wanna mess wit chemistry with a guy like law. i didn’t like him when he was “good” and he was terrible in kc. he always goes for the big play and gets the pick or gets burned. i guess depth is always something good (if it keeps coleman off the field) but ty is not a guy to sign just for depth imo (sorry to repost that comment)
rotoworld’s reaction (a great site if u dont use it, always up to the minute, its where i heard the story first)
Eric Mangini timed the move to maximize the annoyance factor for New England. Law will be used at cornerback and safety, which makes sense considering his excellent tackling ability and poor speed. Don’t expect him to make a major impact on the Jets defense. Law struggled badly in Kansas City.
-
I’ll probably be in the minority on this one, but I like the move for one reason. It shows that the Jets really, REALLY want this game and realize how important it is. I think they don’t want to risk Lowery having more growing pains against Cassel’s safety valve (Welker) and they want to cover all bases. I’m not a big Ty Law fan, but I’m glad the franchise is treating this game with the urgency it demands.
-
this makes no sense. it makes me wonder if rhodes or elam have an undisclosed injury that is serious. or was this to prevent the pats from signing him?
-
Dont want to sound cocky but I did mention this 3 days ago when everyone was going crazy over the possibility of signing the overrated D Hall. This would be a great move for the team and Law. We need veteren leadership in the secondary and he needs a winning team that he knows the defense.
-
i really like the front office’s commitment to building this team. sure law isn’t what he once was, but he will provide good depth and mentor the younger players. i’m sure he’s still better than coleman and poteat at this stage.
-
cut eric smith hes terrible
-
I agree that it can’t hurt and it may be some kind of psych factor plus good to mentor Lowery who has such promise. Wonder if there’s some knowledge about the Pats that Law will dish? Probably not but it smells a bit like when they invited Reche Caldwell to camp just to pick his brain last year
-
Law has had no training camp or any game action this season, how much of a positive impact could he make in this game? Maybe in future games, but I thought he was a step slow in ’05 when he was with the Jets.
-
For some stupid reason I’m really caught up in this number thing. Was it a typo, is Revis giving up his number?
On a football note, I’m worried that the Pats will expose him as he’s can’t be in game shape.
On his “mentor” role, wasn’t he the lazy player who barely practiced last time he was here? I hope he takes it seriously and helps Revis instead of teaching him how to hold and take unnecessary risks.
-
correction: as he can’t
-
guys, he is only 34, not 44, and he can play still. i mean, if you have been watching, lowrey has been awful. he’s going to get picked on in some big spots. most importantly, we can’t cover anyone in the slot. so this makes all the sense in the world.
if mangini can make troy brown a DB, and he had a few picks, your telling me he can’t utilize law’s skills?? come on guys. it’s not just for this week. this is a very savie move by the jets. -
Our nickel and dime coverage has sucked all season long. If Law can fill that slot role, it would solidify the secondary quite a bit. I just wonder if he’s got anything left in the tank.
It makes you wonder just how far Justin Miller’s stock has fallen.
-
IR ERIC SMITH, Elam is better than him anyway
-
Mixed feelings here people , he will be a good mentor for Dwight Lowery and as if Revis needs mentoring but more of it cant hurt him, and playing this guy at safety isnt such a bad idea , he is pretty good at coverage when he isnt running around so much and Lowery might get moved to nickel which is good because all our other guys sucked at sticking the slot guy , and what i dont like about this deal is that Lowery wont be starting anymore , and this guy is probably out of shape and he only has 2 days to prepare for the pats , not good people , well atleast he knows the playbook
-
Law came cheap and knows our system. Its a genius move not matter what. Poteat and Elam have proved they make plays. Just do not activate Miller and Coleman and keep Nugent sidelined. I have just as much confidence in Feely than Nugent before the 55 yarder. They both scare me but Nugent cannot hit that kick. Hasnt since OSU and those gay balls they use.
-
I dont think its a bad move, unless revis switches to #22 and burns all his fans that bought his jersey.
Ty Law is slower than molasses going up hill and was terrible in KC, but our 2nd cb position has been a real sore spot. I dont know how much he can actually contribute, being hes been away for so long and he about a biscuit away from being a linebacker, but just having him mentor Revis and co, plus play a little dime is fine by me.
-
i like this move…its adds leadership and experience to a young secondary in revis and lowery….
eric smith should go like i have been sayin since day one…
elam has solidified his spot on this team as a safety and he has barret to back him up that has played better then smith..
i personally like the move because its not like we signed him long term its for the rest of the season to give us some depth and leadership experience…
GO JETS!!!
-
and let us not forget his 90 yard pick six against the hated patriots in ’05 was it?
-
Disgusting
-
i guess your not feeling it are you fonzarello….
-
“Law, who will wear No. 22 for the Jets” from NFL.com.
So no need to burn your Revis jerseys just yet… -
just to clear everything up, that WAS a typo law will wear 22 and revis will keep 24
here’s the quote from the Schefter blog, “That’s my little boy,” said the 34-year-old Law. “I’ve watched him grow up and to be able to help him now, it’ll be a good deal. He’s wearing No. 24, and he’s representing me. He’s a stud, and it’s going to be more of a pleasure to watch him grow.”Law, who will wear No. 22 for the Jets, also will have the chance to grow. The Jets told him they will use him at cornerback, but also experiment some with him at safety. It is something Law has watched some of the game’s great defensive backs do, and he is anxious to be on the field, despite missing all of camp and the first nine weeks of the NFL season.

REVIS NUMBER 24 FOREVER FOREVER FOREVER FOREVER FOREVER FOREVER FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could Law be our new version of Ray Mickens?
-
I compare this to the Giants and Sam Madison. He is an experienced guy who the players like and can still cover and pic off passes. Plus he is like Revis’s older brother……. anyhting to help Revis become a bigger star I am all for….
-
i would have been pisseed if law got #24 i just bought a revis jersey!
-
This guy won’t see more than 5 snaps against NE.
-
Law in the slot or to cover slippery TE’s??
Lowery is getting better, but opposing TE’s have been killing the Jets.
I LOVE this moveAn energized, healthy Jets team against a banged up Pats team? You gotta like our chances this week
Go Jets!!
-
law is an improvment over drew coleman
-
Great pick up! Lowery has been impressive for rookie, but struggling to cover the slot and we’ve got Wes Welker in three days.
Eric Smith is expendible. Put him on IR. Elam has prooved himself!
What’s the deal with Nugent? Are we gonna carry two kickers all season?
What’s the deal with Justin Miller? He’s a high draft pick and when he’s not punching women in the face, he’s heading to Honolul as a kick returner.
Is he injured again? I think he’s in his contract year too. I wanna see what this dude can do, before writing off a second round pick as a bust – sucks!
-
Miller is a free agent at the end of the year, the Jets haven’t played him. Another alternative is putting Nugent on IR,
-
I’d take Ty Law on my team over Eric Smith any day.
I loathe Eric Smith.
-
If u havent noticed recently, the opposing QB’s aren’t throwing the ball towards Revis too much. Instead, they keep throwing at the rookie, Lowery. By picking up Law, he will probably become our # 2 CB in the coming weeks. Deciding to challenge Law rather than a rookie in Lowery puts things back in our favor. The other teams are really going to have to think about challenging Law, a consistent pro bowler in his prime.
Yes, he has lost a step, but when he was with us last, he was our # 1 CB covering the best WR’s, all we need him to do now is to do a good job covering the other teams #2 WR possibly #3 WR. He will also be another coach on the field for on youngsters, and he said he has followed Revis his whole life, already has a connection with Revis, can only make this secondary better. Revis and Lowery as the youth, Law, Poteat, and Barret as the Veterans. Thats a nice mix in the secondary!
Leave Miller and Coleman inactive. Like the idea of E. Smith and Nugent on IR, and any chance of squeezing Clowney in the active roster!
-
if used properly, as many of us have already said…this could be a great move…i like law in the nickel package…helping break up the short stuff to welker and faulk…
jets win thursday night
-
Lets be honest here. Law hasnt been a good corner since the NFL changed the rules on hitting WR’s after 5 yrds. Law used to manhandle WR’s and make plays. He will have a minor impact on this season let alone 3 days from now against NE. I love the move but lets not get ahead of ourselves.
-
Remember how important Mickens was as the nickle? I agree with JesusRevis that is the role I’d like to see Law fill.
Plus, we might have the youngest secondary in football, a little veteran leadership can’t hurt. Rhodes is the veteran and what’s he, in his fourth year? -
Law cannot play the nickle slot. He will get eaten up. He has to cover the TE’s or play a safety type roll. He dosent have the speed to cover quality WR’s anymore
-
listen i think law will have a huuuge impact for this secondary just with experience alone i think elam proved himself this week so i think law was brought in to play corner whether it be the slot or move lowry to the slot in 3rd down situations plus you can be sure he will be helping put these young guys into the right spots to make plays.. LOVE THE MOVE
-
I’m a little disappointed in Lowery, lately. He will blossom into a player but, Law could be that missing piece of our defense that puts us over the top. Yes, I am the eternal optimist but, that position has now become our weak spot. Giving Law a shot to play opposite Revis might just be a stroke of genius. If this works out, you have to give Tannenbaum “GM of the Year”, if he hasn’t won it already. I like this.
-
This could make Lowery more thirsty to win back that starting job.
-
The question is what are the coaches seeing that we are not?
-
OK I change my mind there is no negative in this move except for the fact that he might want his number and Revis might just give it to him
-
Hanger, Lowery has not looked good, recently. He has been picked apart and the recipient of a few penalties, as well. He has made some nice plays but, overall, he is our main weak spot on defense. Playing opposite Revis, other teams are picking on him. With Law opposite Revis – good luck, It is the move of a management team that knows what they need to be successful.
-
Kewpie to Ian.
1) Law looked bad here and that was before he went to KC and got hurt. Really, at CB he cannot help and how good can he be at safety?
2) If the Jets wanted depth, when it was painfully obvious to all of us that Drew and Eric were inept, they could have added Law early in the season, before the bye, so he had time to get into shape.
3) If Law would not sign until now, after the two wins, how much help can a front runner give?
4) If they cut Drew and or Eric and or Ahmad Carroll no loss. But if this is the reason for letting Feely go, I hope we don’t need a FG and have to turn to Huggies.harlan
-
I see no downside here. When Law was here, he got most of his INTs through his NFL knowledge, not declining cover skills. So, I don’t expect him to be the no. 2 corner. I expect him to play like a second free safety, especially in dime packages. He’s a smart, veteran player and the Jets could use some experience in the secondary. I will be a little concerned if he’s the no. 2 corner. Lowery and Poteat have done reasonably well. Also, Elam has done a real good job covering the TE. So, I don’t think there was a “need” for Law. He’s a good addition to a defense that is getting real close to dominant.
-
the management war between us and the pats has been relatively quiet as of late, but this kick starts it back up. hopefully the front office “victory” can help us win where it matters, not just where we go to compensate for our lack of success verse the pats.
-
Guys this is not a good football move, it’s a GREAT one. Law can step right in and play in Mangini’s system. Its the same one he starred in NE. Ty Law is a 3-4 corner. He is not a Tampa 2 corner. He does not have to cover Randy Moss anymore. We have the best young corner in the league to do that. Think about it like this, Ty Law or Hank Poteat and Drew Coleman. It gives our defense so much more flexibility. Hey the Pats were still talking to him and the Saints and Chiefs. He is gonna have a ROLE on this defense, not be asked to carry it. Borderline HOF veteran players can be called upon to provide depth to get teams over the top. I love this move I just saw it on the MNF post game. The pieces are falling together, another great one by TANGINI. I just love Mangini for this one…
-
there seems to be something wrong with this picture going into this vital game. It could be that were riding into the game with too much ego or brett’s still making poor decisions, but that doesnt quite seem to be the problem. Maybe the hostile environment or our “struggling” defensive backfield? Oh, I know, it’s that i won’t be able to watch the game! Whatever ***hole decided to put my most thought about game on NFL network deserves to be laid off. This is ridiculous, just cause my family cant afford to pay for this bs network, i cant watch my team celebrate their greatest victory in god knows how long? So i guess i’ll be stuck with basic cable’s thursday night programming. Hooray, The Office!
Screw th NFL and their obsession with making cheap money i’m gonna go watch college -
dfb5447, i think you can stream the game online at the nfl website.
-
If this move was done earlier in the season, I would be the first to say “GREAT MOVE!”
One has to wonder what shape Ty Law is in and what impact if any he will have on this game. -
the game is going to be shown on channel 11, from what i know! so no worry fellaz!!!!
-
for got to say GO JETSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! we gonna spank bellicheat and his team!!!
-
if your in the five boroughs you can see the game on regular t.v
-
I have to believe that Lowery’s starting job won’t be threated just yet. Law is 34, and he missed all of camp and the first 10 weeks of the season. For a position as athletically demanding as CB, I’m sure he’ll be eased into the mix as a depth player. Hopefully we can finally cut Coleman loose. He’s been awful.
-
exactly chase…. how can law be game-ready??
i am sure he has been working out etc b/c he was in contact with teams all season….but working out aint playing/ scrimmaging.
but its a good signing….. he just better be ready to be thrown at alot with revis on the other side!!
he will clearly be ‘eased in’,
-
The only reason Eric Smith is on the team is because Herm had a man-crush on him for being MIchigan State’s defensive captain. Word on the street is that Herm is big into former captains and big, slow linebackers who hunt wild boar…
-
Law needs to stick to welker like glue
is anyone ever going to intercept that dumb slant route welker runs every game be ready for it lay that little **** out for good
-
wow. my very own kewpie.
for real though. anyone who thinks law can cover wes welker, randy moss, or ben watson is nuts (i saw ben watson catch champ bailey from behind once in a playoff game…). maybe, maybe he could cover kevin faulk coming out of the back field, but that’s not likely since he was too slow to make KC’s roster and hasn’t played since last year.
drew: nice point about law being affective only before the nfl changed/started over-enforcing the 5yd rule.
-
Still love the move after a nights sleep but Law cannot cover Wes Welker. Let him come in on 3rd downs and help over the TE and especially those gay RB screens to Faulk….
Thanks Ian for noticing….
-
Hope they cut a kicker or a DB. We need depth at center. Maybe we could get back that guy we cut whose name escapes me at teh moment. You get my point. Turner can’t snap the ball!!
-
I love the pickup but think its hilarious that some people think he could play Nickel. You seriously want Old Man Law covering Wes Welker-types?
Ray Mickens and Ty Law couldn’t be more different from each other. Ray Mickens was little and quick as lightning. Ty Law is big, physical CB and a jammer at the line, and a gambler who can make big plays, but speed WR’s will cause him trouble.
-
Is Ty Law a future hall of famer?
-
dfb5447,
If you live in the five boroughs, LI, N Jersey, or Sthern Connecticut, the game will be on regular basic cable. If you live upstate go to like a Hooters, Dave & Busters, a Houlahans, even a sports bar type place and odds are you’ll be set. Im sorry about the NFL network thing , I have it and its highway robbery -
who was the first person to arrive in america?

Maybe this means Eric Smith will be IR-ed? I sure hope so, b/c otherwise this doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense…
