Link: Favre “Proud of Dustin”
Brett Favre has really enjoyed his rookie receiver even telling him yesterday he wished he “had him when he was younger” according to the New York Post.
Shh … do you hear Mark Chmura crying in a corner too?
“I’m very proud of Dustin,” Favre said. “That’s what he’s capable of doing. He’ll have a lot of 100-yard games. He has no idea how good he can be. He probably thinks he does, but the guy has tremendous potential. He has great character.”
Keller said it meant a lot hearing those words from Favre. “I’m pretty confident in my ability, [but] coming from him that’s pretty big,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting this type of game. Brett gave me some looks and hopefully his confidence in me went up a little bit.
We’ve been high on Dustin Keller since the Jets drafted him and we’re thrilled to see Keller have such a good day yesterday. A six catch, 107 yards and one TD kind of a good day. The Rams have trouble defending slot receivers, and Keller took advantage of it yesterday.
Does Keller have some work to do? Of course. I’d love to see him catch some more passes in stride, but that will come with time and familiarity in the league.
If you’re wondering if it was just an aberration? The worst two teams in the league at defending slot receivers while playing decently against traditional Tight Ends are Saint Louis (#32 v. 3rd Rec. 13th v. TE) and the Patriots (#31 v. 3rd Rec. 11th v. TE). Think Keller could be a big part of the plan again come Thursday?

Psycho Keller
Qu’est-ce que c’est?
He’s fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better
Gunna run run run run run away
OH OH OH OH
AY AY AY AY UM – Touch Down!
I HAVE TO ADMIT i wasn’t knowledgeable when the jets drafted keller about him but turns out he is an actual better pick then gholston
The Jets drafted a guy named Gholston?? I wasn’t aware such a player was on our team. (yes.. sarcasm lol)
Mark Chmura is crying, alright, but it’s more because he’s in jail.
Thomas, Maroney, Brady are all out…gosh, if we don’t win Thursday, when will we win?
yes, he looked very good. but take it with a grain of salt. the st.louis defense is terrible, on the whole.
with the patriots depleted back 7, i would look for more of the same from keller on thursday night, though.
random question: why were favre, jones, etc. playing so late in the blowout? i thought at halftime that perhaps they should let keller or ratliff get in a solid half game of work and sharpen up just in case.
sorry. kellen or ratliff.
I think Favre wanted to stay in. He was having a blast. Was suprised they ran Jones in the last series. Hope his legs get rested in the next few days.
“keller, kell b!!!”
IIRC, they favre only played the first two series after halftime. The first one went poorly, the O didn’t do anything, looked out of sync and all. The second one was the long TD drive. Perhaps Mangini wanted to see a good second half drive before shutting them down.
we have won 6 of our last 10 up in cheaterville (but only 1 of last 5)
cmon now dan c. chmura is not in jail, he was found not guilty
although in epic paul byrdian proportions of hypocricy, chmura did refuse to meet with president clinton after winning the superbowl because of the pres’s having an extramarital affair with lewinsky
Dustin is the big reciever we never drafted, he is gonna be here for a long time making plays. Chalk another up for Mikey Tan.
Now if DK can just learn how to block.
i said this last week at this time and i guess ill have to say it again, when will peter king write a column that doesn’t say something negative about the jets? we won 47-3 and he’s complaining about thomas jones being in the game with 7 minutes left. is this noteworthy? who is he suggesting take reps at rb? johnny johnson? brad baxter? leon johnson? just because you look like norm peterson doesn’t mean you should use your national platform to write a highly subjective column. unreal
Maybe someone should remind that jackass King about the last time St. Louis came to the Meadowlands, with Mike Martz as the coach. They ran up the score and used an onside kick when they were up by about 30 points.

I thought the same thing. Why not beat the pats using their own game plan from week 2. use keller to split the seams and a lot of stuckey, jones and leon in the short passing game.
not really in king’s defense, but i think a 40-0 lead is the time to start working in the back-ups. not because of any problem with supposed running up the score, but because it’s silly to risk injuries, especially when it is such a short week coming up. with the team ahead 47-3, favre started the 4th quarter with a 30 yd pass to dustin keller. that’s great production and all, but not such a smart play if favre gets hurt while throwing deep with an enormous lead in the 4th qrtr.
personally, i think they didn’t put in clemens or ratliff because they were worried the back-up might look better than favre.
as for jones still running the ball with 4 minutes left in the game, it makes absolutely no sense to me. or leon for that matter. was marcus mason not activated? if the team only activates two rb’s, that is bad enough on its own.
by the way, i am of course very, very happy with a blow out win. i just want to see the team do all the little things right all the time.
Wow, I guess he didn’t go to jail.
this must count as some sort of prison:

I guess you didn’t see Trusnik at LB. Remember, with four QB and four kickers, we don’t have a lot of depth. I saw Ihedigbo, too. Clemens at QB. Who am I missing?
I was surprised that Favre and TJ were still in after halftime, but remember, this is Favre’s 9th game with this offense. I think it’s crucial for the Jets offense to be in synch and for Favre to get comfortable. Yesterday, we saw Favre do what he’s great at doing. If you play your safeties deep, Favre kills you with slants and seam passes to the TE. Deep safeties also open up the running game. Nobody is crediting Favre for yesterday’s win, but he was near flawless and deserves kudos for executing a great game plan (that’s 2 in a row for Sch otty).
Belichick relishes making an opposing offense do what it is uncomfortable in doing. The Jets offense, however, is getting to be as complete an offense as we’ve seen in a long time. Every week, I’m seeing fewer and fewer weaknesses. I suspect that the Pats will try to make Favre beat them. This game will test whether Favre can beat the Pats going over the top. With Keller’s emergence, especially without Harrison, and the more controlled Favre, I am hopeful that the Jets can win. The Pats are not built to win a shootout without Brady, so getting an early lead is super-important. Make Matt Cassell have to beat you and that means putting him in a position where he needs TDs. IMO, this is the most important regular season game in Foxboro since 2002. A win gives the Jets a 3-1 AFC East record, with the next 2 AFC East games (against the Bills and Fins) at home. Just a huge game.
Great research.
As pathetic as it sounds i followed Dustin Keller throughout the combine. He first caught my eye in his senior season at Purdue about midway through the season when they played Ohio State, who im pretty sure was in the top 5 at the time. He gained over 100 receiving yards with a handful of catches and possibly a TD. At school i get the NFL network (useless) and was able to watch the televised combine. Keller had a great combine putting up numbers and I remember saying the Jets need a player like this. An up the seam type of guy to compliment the wideouts. When the jets traded up to get the 30th pick i wasnt really sure what route they were going or even if they considered Keller to be a 1st round guy. When the commish announced keller i hit the rough i was pumped and immediately called people.
What im trying to get at is this kid is talented and is everything the Jets needed to diversify the offense.. of course a QB that can stretch the field helps..
Keller should shred the seam against the Pats with injuries to Adalias Thomas and Rodney Harrison…
Keller is definitely a mis-match for most teams. He will be as good as the coaching staff allows him to be. A game like this past one can only do wonders for his confidence.
This past game would have been perfect, to let Vernon Gholston tee off on the QB. I didn’t see him too much. How do they expect him to contribute, if he gets no playing time. There is no way that he caused so much destruction in college and can’t become a good pro. Once again, he can be as good as the coaching staff allows him to be. If they put him in the wrong situations or don’t put him in any situations — what can he do. I hope they don’t waste him.
Sack99,
I too was surprised to see BF & TJ still in the game after the half, but I guesss Manginuess wanteted to keep them and the team hungry for Pats week.
I suspect that Mangini will use Keller as his secret weapon, he will lull the Pats to sleep with the power running game, and then put Keller over the top to loosen things up, maybe even getting lucky and getting a TD out of it.
Sackdance,
Great point on the deep safeties and the slants to the TE. You obviously have watched Favre in GB or played, coached competive football. Great breakdown my man this site needs more people like you as opposed to well, you probably know…
