Link: Jets Good at Forcing Fumbles

Tim Graham of ESPN’s AFC East notes that the Jets are one of the best teams at forcing fumbles this year.

The Jets have jarred quarterbacks into fumbling eight times and have recovered six. Both figures lead the NFL. They’ve amassed 31 sacks, meaning they force a fumble on 26 percent of them.

The Pittsburgh Steelers lead the NFL with 34 sacks, but they’ve forced only five fumbles. They’ve recovered three.

“We do a lot of work in that area,” Jets coach Eric Mangini said. “That’s something that I learned when I was first with the Jets. We spent a lot of time on what’s called ball disruption. I know [Patriots defensive line coach Pepper Johnson] does it a lot up there.

This is apparently a point of emphasis from coaches, as Revis revealed last weekend. On Revis’ corner blitz he knew where Edwards held the ball, and forced a fumble because of it.

With better players come longer down and distance. With longer down and distance come more opportunity for rushing the passer. With more pass-rush and better players come more sacks. With more sacks come more chances to jar the ball loose. With more turnovers come more rest for the defense and playing with a lead. With a lead and rest comes a more energetic and rotating defensive line creating more sacks.

An Ali G big up yourself to billvv for finding this.

  1. Oh wow , I was just reading this article , look how different we look from the 2007 Jets, I hope this carries out for the remainder of the season , especially for the next 3 games where we face you know who, Titans (god I hope they don’t go undefeated ) and the Broncos who are pretty good

  2. MAYBE IM IN THE MINORITY HERE BUT I THINK WE BEAT THE PATRIOTS AND I THINK WE BEAT THE TITANS THE BRONCOS GAME I DONT THINK WE MATCH UP WELL WITH THEM JUST DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY BASICALLY PASS ON EVERY DOWN AND WE HAVE HAD OUR PROBLEMS DEFENDING THE PASS

I agree with you when you say we will beat the Pats and the Titans , but here is where i disagree with you , we can beat the Broncos , we beat the Cards and they basically do the same thing , the reason we won because they play in the west and last I checked Denver was located in the west coast , so we have an advantage , and our D has come a long way and the addition of Law could help against the slot WR and the TE so we will be fine , but I’m worried about SF we have to travel west and that’s the reason why we lost the Raiders game and even the Chargers game, which I believe we could have won if we were at home or if the bolts were an east coast team

  4. im not scared of the pats, the titans, or the broncos. im scared of the giants who we will play in the SB

  5. JesusRevis -

I like the spirit, but jeez, can we beat a hobbled Pats team first? Long way to go before we can even fathom Super Bowl talk.

  6. JesusRevis

lets make the playoffs first , before we talk about the the SB, one step at a time

  7. i agree. it should be 1 step at a time, but i do feel in my heart that the team will be atr the superbowl one day!

  8. From your mouth to God’s ears, LT!!

  9. Those are amazing stats. You rarely get to see all the teams lined up like that. I love seeing those outside rushes coming from the blind side. I just start yelling “Get ‘em… Get ‘em.” Makes my day! My wife hates me yelling, though, scares the crap out of her!

  10. Hey, it’s great to see that we are getting this kind of pressure. It doesn’t always have to result in a sack or a fumble to be a successful play. A third down incompletion, I’ll take any day. Kudo’s to the defence for stepping it up! This defence has skill and has played really well together, They just need to keep improving and improve be the hottest team in the NFL come playoffs. By the way, K. Jenkins #77 is the man, by far the best offseason accusation.

  11. I feel that I am obligated to buy a #77 jersey.

  12. Bassett,
Well said last paragraph on how one thing connects to another and leads to the making of an overpowering defense. Mangini and Tennenbaum (sp?) had a plan, and they went out and got the players who can execute it. They’ve done it across the board. We not only have a team, we have a smart organization.

  13. aw, come on guys…
    lets go crazy…..pats, titans….

    then 3 or 4 superbowls in a row….

    i smell J-E-T-S DYNASTY!!!!!!

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOO JETS JETS JETS!!!!!!!!

  14. Im not trying to sound over-confident guys, but come on, we all know that this team is overloaded with talent, we should beat these teams. Lets go Jets, its time to make it to a superbowl, im not sure but… i think its been a while, right?

  15. I’m all for optimism. What I don’t like is these writers making it out that it’s win or else. That Mangini needs this one like no other this year or it’s doooooom. You’d have to conclude that the writers don’t like Mangini. Why else would you paint such a drastic picture? If the Jets win, it’ll just be the next week against the Titans. All I can hope for is to make the playoffs. By then we will have the team we need to take it all. These guys are GOOD.

  16. Gadies and Lentlemen:

This is why you don’t abandon your schemes when you take over a new team as coach … you need those who will eventually fit and thrive in the system to stick around (Rhodes, Harris, Revis, even a Barton or Ellis), and you need to slowly replace those who don’t fit the system (like, unfortunately, Vilma & Co.).

Those who were held over from the transition period now are fully versed in the defense, and they’ve added some of the remaining chips needed to make the system work.

If Mangini played the 4-3 for the past 2 seasons while he waited for his Jenkins and Pace to arrive, they’d all be learning it right now, no?
