Opinion: More Thoughts on the Ty Law Signing
When it comes to Ty Law, I think we all know what we’re getting. Law has always been described as something of a diva and potential trouble-maker in the past, but he’s a decent and smart player, he likes to win, and he wanted to latch on with a team that was in the hunt. Mangini and Tannenbaum have the core team they need, and aren’t afraid of peppering in some risky talent at this point.
If you need to be reminded of Law, think back to the 2005 season. Yes, he did have 10 interceptions to lead the league (tied), but he also jumped numerous routes that didn’t go so well … and who can forget that LaDanian Tomlinson touchdown? Ooh-fa.
Will Law start and play three downs? That I don’t know, and I doubt, at least initially, but I think he might provide more help for Lowery and the nickels. Law indicated that they’ll use him up and back, so keep your eyes peeled for where and when they use him.
So really, why sign the guy?
Personally, I think that it was a move to provide a little support to the beleaguered Dwight Lowery and some mostly bland nickel play. Maybe he’ll see work on third downs this week, and they’ll go from there. If you watched Sunday’s game, you can tell that Lowery’s getting frustrated. Yes, the kid can and is making plays that I’m not used to seeing from a second corner on this team and I think he’s got the most potential I’ve seen from secondary players not named Revis in the past five years, but the passer interference penalties aren’t getting better for him. Lowery is clearly bewildered that he keeps getting flagged for them, and can’t seem to adjust his game so far.
As far as the nickels, Barrett, Poteat and even Coleman have flashed at times, but it’s been more bland than anything. Adding a player like Law could round out the rotation well, maybe allowing for the others to find their spots in the situations that suit them best.
But if it was one reason that Law is a fit for this team? I think that it’s not so much as a tradtional corner but more as a way to slow down opposing Tight Ends … this is where Law might be most effective.
Law is a physical, tough-nosed corner … the “Anti Deion.” So even though he’s not as fast as he once was, he could be deadly if he’s covering Tight Ends or possession receivers. His skills might have diminished, but think about him running downfield with Bo Scaife instead of Dwayne Bowe … you know who’s going to win that matchup.
The Jets have been fair against the passing game and getting better as the season has wore on, but if there’s one serious fault with their coverage it’s how they play against Tight Ends. Football Outsiders ranks them as 29th in the league against the hybrid blockers and pass catchers.
Note that the Jets are locking down WR2s best … but that’s more a function of playing away from Revis. Opponents are trying to switch their primary receiver to run with Lowery. Lowery needs some relief, but Tight Ends are where the Jets need to tighten the coverage more than anywhere else on the field.

again i love the move cuz i just cant see where this can hurt us…. law loves mangini and i doubt he would act up which in turn would put his old coach in a bad position…
its only for the rest of the season and again i really dont see how this can hurts us
they were doing poorly with the guys they have covering the nickel. as long as revis doesn’t give up his number 24, which is a sign that law is a selfish player looking to screw up team chemistry, i’m fine with this. it would be a punk move by law, because this is now revis’s team, and a sign that law is all about himself. but revis should step up and say NO. law could be a valuable piece for us going foward. he just needs to buy into the concept. and can he please shut his mouth with ‘ i’ve got tricks for you’. just shut up and play old man.
This move does not reek of desperation, it reeks of WE ARE TRYING TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL. Ty Law would not come back this late in the season to a team he did not think had a chance to make a run, plus he’s good friends with Revis. Ty Law is a smart player who’s “diva” attitude will motivate him to not be some bum who opposing wr’s pick on this year. I look forward to his first INT
This is a good “depth” move….especially if Miller isn’t ready to take the field.
According to Mangini the Jets cut Miller to free up roster space for Law
If this turns out to be a swap of Law for Miller, then it makes it a great move. Miller has not contributed anything on the defensive side of the ball since we drafted him. With all Basset’s fancy stats, you can see where Law will help. He’s going to come in on obvious passing downs to cover the tight end.
Either way, I don’t see Law changing thursdays showdown. It’s time to beat this team. I can’t stand the Pats or their fans. Let’s shut them up Jets!!!
fancy stats? I’m feel like that kid in the old spice commercial … i might have to challenge you to an hon-or doo-el.
It is amazing how Miller went from almost starting to being released 4 months later.
Unless there is some major injury we don’t know about, I’d bet someone grabs him asap, if for nothing else, at least his return ability.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the Pats very shortly.
anyone see how Cotch’s BS offensive PI penalty from week 2 is now a highlight in the NFL promos for game?
Bassett- Does that mean you will grow up (or turn back to 13 and regrow up) to be a HOF middle linebacker?
miller was a subpar corner, and his return role has been filled by leon on special teams. law brings his veteran savvy to the defense, and an up and comer like elam can learn alot from him. He knows the jets system, and has an opportunity to get back at belichick. im not going get my hopes up though and say the s word. favre will be favre in the playoffs. lets just hope that we escape with a win thursday no matter what.
Hey Bassett, who’s laughing now? I am
This move, and all the agressiveness in the pass rush, is made possible by Jenkins.
It seemed in jest when Revis said ihaving Jenkins is like having two guys in there, but its true. Where you needed a LB to help fill the gap last year, now you have one more player free on the field this year. He can rush, or he can be another DB. #77 is the difference this year.
Anyone notice that Revis played the slot WR in some Rams sets? My guess is that we may see Revis cover Welker, double coverage on Moss, Law play the TE and Lowery/Poteat/Coleman play the 2nd WR…this would force Cassell to recognize the single coverage and it takes away his top 3 options.
Lowery has been getting rookie calls. Law won’t…except he probably will because we ARE playing in New England. Nice theory though.
As much of a disappointment that Miller had been, i kind of wish they didn’t just cut him. He’s still got potential as a CB and has a probowl under his belt – why not IR clowney, who apparently is never going to play, to open a roster spot. then, we could have traded miller for draft pick in the offseason.
Brandon we couldnt have traded miller in the offseason because he would have been a free agent, we werent going to use him this year and his contract is up so hes a goner
I guarantee Law has a few big interceptions for us down the stretch. I can just feel it.
