Smith Was To Go on IR?
Hutch notes on a blog/blurb on NJ.com that he “got it wrong” about Eric Smith going to the IR. Hutch states that he
was assured by sources last night that the Jets had put safety Eric Smith on injured reserve to make room for new cornerback Ty Law.
Interesting. Maybe the Jets thought they needed to make some salary room but they re-thought the move? Smith might have been a hasn’t been in much of a condition to play, and I guess that the team wanted to extend their options with him rather than shelve him the rest of the way. Personally I think it’s six of one, half dozen of the other.

I don’t think releasing Miller creates any additional salary room because his salary for the year is guaranteed once his is on the active roster on opening day and he is in the final year of his contract.
I’m not 100% sure how the salary is treated when a player goes onto IR. It’s possible a current year cap saving might have been available for IR-ing Smith, in which case perhaps they initially thought they would need to save some money but then decided against it (or decided that they could defer the decision until later).
