Film Room: Jets @ Pats Highlights 11/13/2008

by Bassett on November 14th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Here’s the highlights for the game by the NFLN crew. For those of you who saw the telecast … how bad was the announcing? I love the NFL Network for everything else, but their announcing seems suspect to me.

I think you need to change that headline. (Bills?)

  2. avatar Chrebookie says:

Cassell got traded to the Bills? wait now i’m confused…

  3. avatar charleyjet says:

What do you want from a Giant play by play guy and a color guy who clearly hasn’t seen the Jets all season,

  4. avatar Bassett says:

doh! too little sleep … no more halfass posting for me till later! :)

  5. avatar TOON2388 says:

best commentary clueless moment was this by CC in Q2 “and you can see that Jenkins is getting tired out there.” Next play, KJ threw the o-lineman into the RB and nailed the RB for a loss.

  6. avatar Ken S. says:

Poppa was pretty bad. I loved how every gain is for “a couple of yards.” Some of those “couples” were 5-6 yards.

Poppa talked about a great block on a screen, but didn’t say WHO made it.

Collinsworth is mostly OK with me; “Jenkins is tired” was a bad moment, though.

Neither of them mentioned how the Jets failed to adjust to the Pats halftime adjustments. On either side of the ball. The entire second half.

  7. avatar EastSideKahaluu says:

I remember that moment. I think he even injured the center(?)
I also remember the onfield reporter saying on a later series that KJ was looking very tired. Right after that when the pats got the ball back following the Jets’ 7 minute scoring drive Big Jenks had that crucial sack. Please commentators, dare to question the Beast…

  8. avatar DanF says:

What about their editing? It completely sucked!!!! How many times were they showing the sidelines when a play would start and then you’d only catch the end of the play. Or they would be talking about something going on on the field right at that moment and the camera’s would be on the sidelines and never switch back to the field to show you what the announcers were talking about. I was pulling my hair out!!!!

  9. avatar R in CT says:

Two things I missed because of my own celebrating at the end:

    - Mangini holding onto Belichicks handshake for an extra second, like “Don’t blow me off — take your loss like a man.”

    - And after the Favre-Mangini hug, Favre laying the big smack on Mangini’s butt — priceless!! “Atta boy, Eric! Good game!”

  10. avatar Pat G says:

I like CC. He was enjoyable to listen to and for a change I didn’t feel the need to switch to the radio. At least the announcing team focused on the game at hand.

OTOH, as DanF mentioned, the production sucked.

About 5 minutes into the game NFLN dropped the audio levels and commercials were coming in way louder than the game. I finally switched to the WPIX feed which had their own mix and sounded much more even.

NFLN drove me nuts when they switched late out of replays into live-action, catching the action after the ball snapped or a second or two before the snap. The guys in the truck really need to pay more attention to the field and the game clock.

A radio announcer mentioned they found NFLN stingy with the graphics for down and yardage… I agree. They’d pop it up there at the last moment before the next play.

Like I said, CC was a net positive as an announcer – but the director, AD, and TD need to get their act together – not to mention the many audio glitches. This was the first time I’ve seen a game on NFLN. Overall score: B-

  11. avatar Joe B. says:

    R in CT -

I too liked those moments you mention. CW11 also had a shot on their news broadcast of Favre coming into the tunnel and giving a huge hug and saying “Thank You” to Tannenbaum. Very cool to see.

    Ken S. -

That “couple of yards” thing pissed me off too. How hard is it to look at the screen and say how much the run was for? Anything from 2-7 yards was “a couple” all night.

  12. avatar nyckage says:

what happens to Nugent now , a while ago it seemed like he was good to go

  13. avatar California JetSpaz says:

Not a fan CC. Got tired of listening to him act shocked every time the JETS did something good. I actually turned down the volume at one point. I agree that we missed several plays as the camera scanned the sidelines. That and the lack of rush on the QB had me a bit irritated. I think we should have gone after him a bit more, rattle his cage a little. I would have liked to have seen the Tannenbaum thing. Loved the Favre/Coach hug. It;s a great day to be a JET fan!!

  14. avatar Lou in Denver says:

How many times did Pappa say that a 5 yard gain was a “couple of yards” it irked me. What an amateur. Maybe he couldn’t see the yellow line from the broadcast booth.

  15. avatar DanF says:

My favorite scene was when the camera was panning out as the teams were lined up to snap the ball. The camera just kept panning out and panning out even as the ball was snapped. Then, instead of switching to another camera, they kept the shot from that camera and just kept on panning back all the way to the point where you could see the entire stadium in the field of view and it looked like a bunch of little fleas were running a play on the field. I swear that camera had to be mounted in the parking lot by how far it panned back. If you weren’t watching in Hi-Def you probably couldn’t even tell that the ball had been snapped and the play was ongoing.

  16. avatar C$ says:

I like how Collinsworth said how good CJ Mosley is, like he is so familiar with Mosley. Then Collins says later Leon W is the hardest back to cover out of the backfield in the league?? huh? I mean he’s good out of the backfield, but hardest in the league??

  17. avatar NickyLibs says:

Cris Collinsworth reeks of arrogance and stupidity and luckily, I will not have to listen to another game he does this season. I’m not sure if he just doesn’t like the Jets or if he just loves the Pats, but he does not give credit where credit is due. How is he surprised everytime a Jet player makes a good play? Give credit to KJ for having a great game, give credit to Leon for coming up big, don’t forget to shout out the fact that Keller is in his rookie season. I could be wrong, but it seemed he was a little upset the Pats lost. Get over yourself Cris! And the only reason I’m not saying anything about Papa is because CC made him look like hes been doing this for decades, kinda like when an OK looking girl is hanging out with her fat friends at a bar. She looks like a 9 but thats just because shes with a bunch of 3′s.

  18. avatar Ed L says:

    TOON,

i couldnt agree more about the jenkins being tired comment….

as soon as he said it and i got the word are F***in kiddin me outta my mouth jenkins just proved him wrong….

i agree the commentators were horrible…. almost as bad a cornheiser on MNF

  19. avatar john l says:

for me the best quote of the night came from favre when he said that moss told him that he would definately throw an interception at the coin toss in the middle of the field going into overtime and favre said he was looking for him right after the game to tell him that he never threw one..UP YOURS MOSS!!!!!!!!!!

  20. avatar Jake says:

I have a bigger problem with the directing. Where were the replays? On penalties? Big plays?

And how about a down and distance indicator that comes on screen before the next snap?

Terrible coverage, NFL Network. You guys really ought to be able to do better.

  21. avatar md says:

Wow, Eric Barton was a force. He’s been strong all year, but last night he almost matched Mayo, that SCUD. Downfield pass coverage has been exploited all year, despite solid play by Revis, Rhodes, and now Elam. Young Lowery often plays tough and well, but there were instances last night when his technique went twisty, turning three different directions on the receiver’s cut. When they get quarterback pressure the weakness is covered, but without it there’s plenty of room to operate. Law helped, but I’m sure the issue will be addressed over the next ten days. Let’s hope there’s an answer or it will bite us again.

  22. avatar Fonzie says:

REMEMBER TO THANK CHAD PENNINGTON GUYS!!! THE DOLPHINS WIN OF THE PATRIOTS THIS SEASON HELPED SET THIS GAME UP (ONE GAME LEAD OF THE DIVISION). HE WILL HAVE ANOTHER CRACK TO SLAY THE PATRIOTS. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL PUNCH THE PATRIOTS IN THE MOUTH AND FINISH THEM JUST LIKE WE DID TO BUFFALO. IF THEY DO THEN IT WILL BE A SHOWDOWN WITH THE JETS AND DOLPHINS BEFORE THE SEASON ENDS.

  23. avatar Fonzie says:

    CORRECTION:

ONE GAME LEAD IN THE DIVISION

  24. avatar pat d says:

I may be in the minority but I don’t think the bradcast was that bad. At least I didn’t have to listen to Madden ramble on and on about nothing. And the Espn crew get on my nerves. Also frankly I’m tired of the other networks with their graphic overload and their sideline reporters that add nothing to the game.

I do agree the Jenkins is getting tired comment was classic comedy. I think my whole neighborhood could hear me on the next play when Jenkins made the sack.

But give Collinsworth some credit when he questioned the Jets playing Moss off the line before the play and the Pats score a TD with one second left.

BUT MOST IMPORTANT – THE JETS ARE IN FIRST.

  25. avatar Joe B. says:

    Fonzie -

    F**k Chad.

    That is all.

  26. avatar Joe B. says:

Note: I don’t really mean this, I love Chad as much as anybody, I am just SICK OF HEARING ABOUT HIM THIS SEASON.

  27. avatar pat d says:

I’m glad Chad is doing good but just not good enough to make the play offs.

But what makes me even happier is listening to all the sore losers called Pats fans. Its much better than listening to them brag.

  28. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

The announcers were biased to the Patsies, but they did call the JETS “D” against Moss terrible which completely correct. How can you double team him all night and then play single coverage during the most important play of the game???

We need to play better “D”. Giving up over 500 yards we were lucky to win the game.

  29. avatar johnl says:

not for nothing guys but chad always seams to make the playoffs when healthy. not that i give a flying f*&k about what he does anymore anyway……13-3 i can feel it!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. avatar jim says:

i agree – i thought it was an amateur broadcast…i think i missed three plays for graphics, too late coming out of commercials..and bob pappa has no idea how many yards a play gets….every once in awhile, just for kicks, i like to know the down and distance….

    hey everybody….WERE IN 1ST PLACE

  31. avatar TimNC says:

Pad d, easy on the Miami isn’t good enough to t make the playoffs talk. Right now, they are a wild card team. At 5-4 and gearing up for the Raiders this weekend, they’ll likely be 6-4, tied with the Pats 1 game back of the Jets. For all we know, the Jets and Fins could be playing for the division title on the very last game of the year. Ugh, I for one don’t want all that drama! :)

  32. avatar klecko71 says:

from bucky brooks of cnnsi.com on the jet D scheme on thursday night….interesting…

While watching the Jets blanket Randy Moss and Wes Welker for most of the game during their impressive 34-31 overtime win Thursday night, I noticed that Eric Mangini used a trick learned from his days as a Patriots’ assistant to neutralize his former team’s top playmakers.

The Jets unveiled a hybrid “two-man bracket” coverage in the first half that effectively double-teamed Moss and Welker on passing downs. The scheme, which the Patriots used to frustrate Peyton Manning and the Colts in the 2004 AFC Championship Game, uses a combination of press coverage and two-deep principles to disrupt the timing and rhythm of the passing game. In the scheme, corners are instructed to aggressively “press” or jam receivers at the line of scrimmage while taking away all inside releases. They maintain a trail position as the receiver works up the field, and undercut all in- or out-breaking routes. The safeties protect the corners by covering the deep halves of the field to eliminate all deep throws down the sidelines. (The Jets tweaked the scheme by having the safety over top of Welker bracket the slot receiver instead of covering half of the field.)

The Jets assigned Ty Law to Moss and used their budding star corner Darrelle Revis against Welker in the slot. With their two top corners specializing in physical play at the line of scrimmage, the Jets made Moss and Welker work harder to get to their sweet spots on the field. In addition, the toll of the physical play frustrated the duo as they were unable to get their hands on the ball for long stretches (Moss had no catches in the first half and Welker had only two receptions at halftime).

Though the Patriots eventually exploited the weakness by having Cassell extensively target Ben Watson and Jabar Gaffney on the way to a 400-yard passing day, the Jets achieved their desired result by forcing the young quarterback to rely on the Patriots’ third-and fourth-best options in the passing game.

  33. avatar oscarfactor says:

CC is ok in my book – he called out the Jets change in coverage strategy seconds before Moss caught the TD. I don’t want my announcers to be complete homers. CC knows the game.

Now, I agree the NFLN production values suck. Weird sounds – I think from the prod truck – were constantly making it on air.

Let me ask – who would you want to call a Jets playoff game? Nantz and Simms are pretty good – but I have to say I really like the craziness of Gus Johnson.

  34. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

I think the production value as a whole was crap.

DanF and Jake hit on major points with the directing not showing replays and showing us the sideline when they should be showing the field. just awful.

The thing that drove me nuts the whole game though was that stupid graphic that had the yellow in it – every time I saw it, I thought there was a flag on the play.

    jesus. pick a different color.

also, I don’t know if this was the nfl network’s fault – for those watching on WPIX HD, the audio was that of Gossip Girl or something right up until kickoff.

  35. avatar Jose the Jet says:

I actually mute the game and just watch. No need for verbal inturruptions.

  36. avatar Jose the Jet says:

I THINK MIAMI WILL BE DOWN TWO BY THE END OF THE SEASON BEHIND THE JETS. KC WILL BE A TOUGH GAME FOR THEM.
