Kenny Mayne Steals My Sunshine
Yes, that’s what greeted my home page this morning. Screw you Kenny Mayne.
The Jets win one of the most memorable games in recent NFL history, and Kenny Mayne’s digital shorts have trumped this as the top ’story’ on the WorldWide Leader’s main page.
Listen Mayne. I love you, and I know you want to be the sports version of Christopher Guest or whatever .. you’d told us enough times already. But since when did your quirky ‘Curb’ knockoff digital shorts merit page priority over my moment to bask in the sun? I don’t think so. To gauge this I’m going to watch your short and react here … after the jump.
5:33 — If *I* had a hammer, I’d hammer your deadpan humor to below the fold the morning after the Jets win … thank you very much.
5:30 — Wow, not five seconds in and we’ve got a Nyquil commercial. Sayy … am I being set up here?
5:20 — We’re off to a good start … a subtle knock on Hanes … one of your sponsors!!! Oooh!! You’re naughty!!! I’m hooked already!!!
5:12 — The exec/suit type doesn’t even know Kenny Mayne. It’s like its an indictment of sports that he’s making fun of himself that someone who is IN sports doesn’t know who a guy who TALKS about sports actually is. This is getting straight up ontological on me.
5:02 — Situationally awkward interaction followed by wooden joke by Mayne about a person he’s just met … right.
4:35 — Yes Kenny .. what do we know? Maybe that I’ve seen less than a minute and I know this is worse than Ishtar?
4:30 — A Devo joke! You whipped it good!
4:19 — Aaand … in less than a minute and a half ESPN shows us why they are ‘letting’ this lead their page. It’s not about Kenny being funny and entertaining (this isn’t) but what they’re ALWAYS about … corporate sponsorship and getting more ad dollars from the kids. Word up dog, or whatever colloquialism the kids say these days!!
4:05 — Drenched advertising in pornography? Good idea … but now you are stepping on SI.com’s toes …
3:50 — What I like about this is that Kenny Mayne is showing what it’s like inside his world, but he’s still poking fun at it and setting it up like he’s still a critic of it, and not a pawn. Somehow, I get the feeling he believes it’s working.
3:30 — Some inside joke that doesn’t land about ‘Sarah” and her wearing vertical stripes cause she’s fat. I guess I’m not into sports enough to get this. Oh wait I run a blog about sports watch this stuff everyday, went to his Wikipedia page and HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.
3:25 — Oops segue that I didn’t see coming … first thing I’ve missed so far in this telecast schlock.
3:08 — What do the Mets have to do with Lou’s Original Roast Beef? This question brought to you by the BUDWEISER HOT SEAT.
2:58 — Maybe seeks his sanctuary from the corporate hubbub fishing with a pal — probably not off the campus for the shot. Why the hell are they fishing in a reed swamp? I do like the “scum pond” joke … that’s quality.
2:38 — “What’s so bad about a corporate mention? I’ve seen Costas do it.” The thing in and of itself is not bad, it’s that we fans remember a time where ESPN didn’t do it, and it rankles us. That you show remorse is impressive, but we all know it’s about money, though we fans don’t like to be reminded of the illusion by the only real game in town. This brings me back to the ironic fact that this treacle about how Kenny is standing up to corporate mentions in sporting news are ruining sports KNOCKED DOWN REAL SPORTS NEWS ON ESPN’s MAIN PAGE.
2:32 — Pan to wide shot on the campus … saw that coming a mile away. Hey Kenny can I have your writer’s job please?
2:03 — Exec/suit caricature is bringing down the modern athletic system as we know it! (And ESPN is letting him lead the way!!)
1:31 — OK … quality interview of a derelict. I guarantee that if ESPN did use 50% MORE drifters and prostitutes in their brand spots, then no one would care half as much about the sullying of sports via corporatization. Ironic how the presence of whores make ESPN less whorish … the theory or relativity?
THE THEORY OF RELATIVITY BROUGHT TO YOU BY NUTRISLIM

more self-promotional garbage by ESPN
If it didn’t happen on ESPN, it didn’t really happen.
thank you for saying this because i agree 100%. not too go to far off on a tangent but i feel espn is slipping like crazy of late. their coverage of sports is good, but the on air personalities are getting out of hand. stuart scott and steven a. smith (the same steven a. smith who said teams should kick fg’s in overtime on 3rd down so if they miss they can try again) are professional shill’s and the likes of steve berthieume are completely unwatchable.
perhaps the jets off the front page is a good thing, this is one road win and we have the titans in a week+, lets move on, take a fews days to rest and get ready to ruin another teams perfect season.
Yet another example of why ESPN is no longer a legitimate source for intelligent sporting discussion.
Thanks for calling them out Bassett, nonsense. Although I will say, Schlereth and NFL Live’s coverage last night after the game was pretty sweet.
Favre was emotional and supposedly Jones was crying in the locker room too, this game brought the team together to unprecedented levels for Jets Nation. Had they not won in OT, it likely would have torn it apart.
I have really soured on Mangini though to be honest, while I give Tannenbaum credit for building this team. There are definitely a few things we could be concerned about with the second half last night, but a win is a win, and I don’t care at the moment. Titans hopefully aren’t a let down game next week.
Our two lines, undersized and irrelevant recently, have both become legitimate forces. Everyone said the OL would take a while to come together, but 1/2 through the season, they are now looking legit.
Proud to be a Jet fan today.
What would any of you have done differenent defensively? Jabar Gaffney was their man. Took Welker, who is more amazing everytime I see him, and Moss mostly out of the game. Not having Jenkins in the nickel package hurt, but my one complaint is not jamming Moss on the last play. I thought Mangini did a great job managing the clock and with the defensive scheme. The O came out flat in the 3rd, probably because Keller never touched the ball. If we lost I would have soured on Mangini, but in his 3rd year of head coach they did a damn good job. They dared Cassel to beat them and since we didn’t have 8 people in the secondary he almost did. From a football stand point. There wasn’t much more we could do without leaving Welker or Moss with single coverage. If Keller doesn’t have a drop in the end zone and Favre doesn’t underthrow leon in the 3rd and our D gets a little longer breather we would be thrilled and have won in regulation. The team is still just coming together and they look pretty good doing it. Remember we lost week 2 at home to these guys.
does anybody else notice that espn treats the jets as if they are a high school team that can’t do anything correct?
green guy and co.,
i agree with you, its tough to complain after going into ne and beating a very good football team on the road in a national spotlight. as for the final play of regulation, i thought law had pretty good coverage on moss but agree that the lack of a jam on the line basically allowed cassel to have an opportunity to beat us.
this win is on brett more than mangini and co.. he has completely changed the attitude of this team in all 3 phases of the game. for all you longtime jets fans, what did you think the odds of us completing that 3rd and long in ot was? favre’s leadership is remarkable.
jenkins is a decent ballplayer too
That 3rd down pass was the result of a good TE having the advantage of blown coverage. I thought we were screwed too, but Brett made the throw. He had a great game last night. I think our coaching staff deserves some credit for bringing it all together with the new guys. Tannenbaum did a great job getting them, but you never know how they will work out. Plus the loss to the Raiders and near loss to the Chiefs could have been our undoing except we are 4-0 since the loss to the Raiders. Thats team leaders and coaches. Players played last night and that is why we won. First place was on the line. Pats wanted it really bad too.
Don Banks even admitted he was wrong when he thought Jenkins would be a bad fit. That is amazing. Sports writers rarely admit anything.
Oh and every media outlet treats us like a HS team. Did the commentators once talk about how well the Jets were playing or was it more about how hurt the Pats were and how they were making mistakes?
This was a solid win to say the least. I can really careless what the commentators say. When we continue to win and they still count us out it makes them look like fools.
Leon Washington is the man.
Enough said..
J – E – T – S JETS JETS JETS
Just to let you know last night this WAS the main story on ESPN but this morning they changed it
The game wasn’t even a link on the left-side news box! How pathetic. ESPN is going the way of MTV when they gave up the M part of the business.
Kenny Mayne is the biggest tool over at ESPN, not an easy accomplishment. He is not funny and acts like a jacka$$, most if not all the time. Their self promotion is getting ridiculous.
Jojosellout:
……Did I just see you’d!ck ride farve(he did well) and just down play jenkins as being a decent player?? I give farve credit for bringing a different swagger to this team and a different attitude, but that DECENT player jenkins is the main reason why the jets where even playing for 1st place last night. Was never a farve hater, and was happy when he got here.(I’m a jet fan) I respect what he has brought to the game and his will to compete, but the farve butt kissing is getting overwhelming, even in the media, in which they credit the guy for anything that goes good for the team, but nothing bad, despite the throw gambling. I don’t despise him for his gambling style because that’s what we were to expect, but as he and anybody in that jet locker room would acknowledge, he is NOT the best player on the team, I’m not hating, I just feel that we signed a couple other PRO BOWLERS this off season, and the biggest being kris jenkins. The reason the jets are even relevant is mostly because of the run defense and how kris jenkins has improved the players around him and made it easier for them to make plays and how revis continues to excel(he won 2 games for us…..”Litterally”). (These guys should get some or most of the credit for the franchise turnaround. ;enkins with out a doubt has proved to be the best NT in the league besides rodgers in cleveland, and after having to make the transition from DT. You all know if you ever to him out the equation, we wouldn’t even be competing. I like farve, but I think even he is getting tired of the @ss kissing,…….did I forget to mention calvin pace and leon washington? Or should I go on….we won, a great team effort, nuff said.
The Jets weren’t on ESPN’s main page simply because they had the misfortune of playing this huge game on the NFL Network instead of ESPN. Had this been a Monday night game, it’d be a much bigger deal for them. If it wasn’t on their networks or doesn’t involve a Boston team, it doesn’t matter. I still remember going to ESPN.com one Tuesday morning about a year ago and the main story was the previous night’s MNF game. Relegated to the corner was breaking news that Sean Taylor had died overnight.
Does anyone even think Kenny Mayne is funny?
Back when he was doing the desk job on sportscenter, he was kind of entertaining, but all those videos are AWFUL. why would anyone choose to watch athletes who can’t act, with no comedic timing reading lines from a bad script with bad jokes next to a no-talent hack who can’t do anything but deadpan (and not very well, i’ll add)?
I honestly don’t know a single person who enjoys them.
ESPN needs to stay out of COMEDY. They and their writers are not funny. Mayne’s dead pan schtick is so unfunny, that it defies imagaination.
It is not enough that they are overpaid sportcasting dolts, and could do us a big favor and stay in that zone. Like the old days. Instead they have to do Bill Murray impressions, stuff like that.
Look Kenny you made it sports journalism, your incredibley lucky for being a no-talent in that field of greats; Cosell, Carey, Albert, Vitale, etc., Stay the hell out of comedy. Kenny Mayne is NOT funny. jerock mcthrill
What really bothers me about Mayne’s dead pan schtick, is that he is so conscious of what he is doing, and himself.
Ben Stein was brilliant in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” because you actually believed that he was going through this rote day of his otherwise completely boring and predictable life as a teacher…………….
Mayne just exudes or oozes self consciousness in this ridicolous character that he has tried to pass off on us. It is almost as bad as Bob Goldwaithe, Carrot Top, or Gallagher. And in many ways you have to have more respect for them because they are comedians, and not trying to be sportscasters. Do me a big favor Kenny, and can it. Once again, I have to repeat. You are not funny, Kenny Mayne.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I as so sick and tired of ESPN’s on-air “talent” trying to be comedians. Kenny Mayne is continuing in the long tradition of morons at ESPN, which started with the brutal hack Keith Olberman. Just save your elitist, holier then thou, inside joke telling and give us SPORTS. Stupid Kenny Mayne.
