  1. Forgot to post thsi yesterday – with casual day in the office on Friday, I wore my jersey. While dropping my daughter off at pre-school, at least 5 other parents congratualted me and said things such as “my 2 favorite teams are the Chargers and who plays NE.” Now San Diego, being knocked out by NE the past 2 seasons, has good cause to despise them, but I can also tell you there is no love lost out here for the Green & White as they remember the 2004 plays and the 2002 week 9 blowout that derailed SD’s 6-1 start. NE might be more reviled around the country than the Yankees.

  2. Bassett:

It’s going to be interesting to see which team, the Jets or the Giants, will move their game if both play for their conference championship. Lets see how much influence Mr. money bag$ Johnson has with the NFL brass. Interesting article:

  3. I love the Charlie Weis Story.

  4. Dude, how can you hate on the Irish?

  5. Looks like Nugent ain’t getting his job back , I’m guessing the Jets will put him on IR or release him one or the other , I wanted Nugent to succeed but with Feely doing all these great stuff it’s going to be hard for Feely to play as a Jet again

  6. As I’ve ranted again and again on coaching, I believe Bondy gets it exactly right…

“…Mangini has his big victory anyway…Hopefully, Mangini isn’t as stubborn behind the scenes as he is on a teleconference call with reporters.

Sometimes we forget Mangini is still a young trainee on the job, and that nobody becomes Belichick overnight – not even his protégés. In the future, he needs to play with what got him to the fourth quarter.

In the NFL, coaches celebrate and sweat at the same time. Mangini squeaked past the Patriots, despite himself. The undefeated Titans are next. If the Jets find themselves leading Tennessee in the fourth quarter, Mangini needs to trust the Force, or the Favre. ”

Only thing I’d add is that we should have also kept our heel on their necks in last two minutes of second quarter as well…I’m all for slow and steady wins the race, but turtles going into their shell become soup!

  7. Great link from Deadspin about the Heidi Bowl. I was not around to see it, but I used to hear about it all the time from my old man…

  8. I don’t get this talk about trusting Favre; Mangini needs to cut him loose; let Favre be Favre. He played his most complete game of the season and operated within the offensive scheme. He managed the game as well as Pennington, but also used his superior arm to great effect. He threw only one ball, that I recall, into double coverage, and, just as Mangini asked him to do, was decisive without being reckless. His interceptions in previous games had been the greatest concern. He didn’t throw any. He did, however, throw darts to complete passes inbetween tight coverage, and delivered quick slants over the middle to the receivers in stride. And he threw downfield enough to keep the defense honest. Granted quarterback rating isn’t perfect but it’s probably the best QB stat we have. I don’t know what Favre’s was, but it had to be very high. While he has made more spectacular throws, and I’m sure he will again, that WAS Favre at his near best, and exactly what we brought him here to do.

  9. I can’t understand why some fans still fail to see the success we’ve had by Mangini keping Farve under control. Take a look at the games after Buffalo and before Buffalo. The difference is dramatic. We are now a team playing to our strengths and not a dysfunctional team full of INT’s and turnovers.

THE WORST THING MANGINI CAN DO IS TURN THE GUNSLINGER LOOSE, ESPECIALLY WITH THE TITANS NEXT !!

  10. AGREE that not being the gunslinger has been good, but feel there’s a middle ground not being considered. Have him manage but when you need him let Brett be Brett, i.e., to run out the clock by hitting a 5 yarder for a first down!@

  11. JetsFanForLife:

I agree with you about a middle ground needed and thats exactly what I am afraid of. I think it’s either feast or famine with Farve and our chemistry ahs been building some solid ground since Buffalo.

Since we have been hiting our stride, isn’t it amazing how Farve’s been morphing into Pennington?

  12. Cherbookie
Thanks for the link…I for one left my house assuming it was over only to find out what we all missed.
I made it to Shea for the Championship with Oakland…$5.00 standing room ticket and boy was it cold.

Hank/naples…Jetfanforlife is right you have to let Brett be Brett when needed..just as you like Chad to be Chad. Both have their + & – ’s

  13. The Hanger:

Try to look at this objectively: Since Buffalo we have been successful playing within our game plan with Farve ” managing” the game having about 73 attempts with one INT. The three games prior with Brett beign Brett he had 105 attempts with seven INTs. Now tell me, would you rather see Brett morph into Chad or the gunslinger?

  14. Exactly. Last week WAS the middle ground personified. Favre was Chad with a much better arm. New England knew that. We should too.

  15. It’s hard to understand fans who seem to want Favre to be exactly like Pennington. Because then we’ll get exactly what we got with Pennington, a second round playoff exit at best. I liked Chad and I was happy enough to be seeing the post-season with his smart, overachieving play, particularly considering a lot of what had come before. But I want more.

There’s no question that the team has been more consistently successful with a stronger emphasis on the run game, less empty sets and fewer attempts for Favre. But to say that means Favre has played like Chad in recent victories is simply poor observation. He throws faster, sharper and harder even on short routes and the dart-like, TE seam passes are vintage Favre or “Brett being Brett.”

But still, if he doesn’t attack the back end of the defense a little bit more with a lead, we are going to wind up with a lot more nail biters like Thursday’s. There was an opportunity to crush NE up 24-6, stomp their spirits out, and the careful, play not to lose, mentality of years past nearly put a spike through the Jets heart.

I don’t know if we would have won that game with another QB. Maybe. I do know that Favre saying he saw BB telling the secondary to drop back on the 3rd and 15 that was the game winning conversion said a lot.

I do think Favre might be at his best in his twilight years being well-managed, but I hope the CS understands that the threat posed to defenses by his arm, will only survive if they let him use it at times.

  16. subwayfare:

I agree with you in part , however it is absolutely critical that we continue what we started in Buffalo. Before that game I commented that more important than the win would be for the Jets to execute a signature gameplan that would play to the teams strength and build chemistry. I felt Mangini and the Jets did just that and came out a different team. The next day, Nov. 3rd, I posted this: ” Brandon: Tell it like it is. You are 100% right and the proof is in the gameplan. We will see the same ball control, run first pass second basic mistake free (I hope) football till the playoffs. Gone is the dysfunctional offense with the gunslinger mentality. Mangini will do everything he can to not “let Farve be Farve” and control him. No doubt farve can make all the throws but those to the enemy can sap a teams positive energy.”

I don’t want Brett to become Chad. I want Farve to stay exactly like he has been since Buffalo, because this is the only way we can continue build on our strengths, our chemistry and our success.

  17. It whole “Mangini controlling Favre” and “we can’t let Favre do this and that” stuff truly bothers me. Listen it took some time for Brett to get comfortable in the off. and for him to realize he’s not 25 and he doesn’t have to win the game by himself. The last thing Mangini wanted to do was put the shackles on Favre. He asked Favre to do what good smart coaches do when a player is trying to win the game by himself, “dont try and do too much, when it’s not there, take the sack of throw it away”. In turn he has helped put Brett in less risk by a balanced approach (33 passes 35 runs Thurs night) and calling out the o-line and cordinator ( he did say a few weeks ago”we need to protect better and do things as coaches to help Brett suceed”). It’s not all Mangini and it’s not all Favre, that’s where the “middled ground” comes in.
Mangini has done an outstanding job of getting through to a 39 year old HOF QB who could of just as easily said “I’ll do it however I please”. He treated him like a man and it seems Brett truly respects and likes him. Bad guy right, a resume unparelled in the NFL with a HOF career, and he changes his game for the good of the team. Bad person? prima donna? some of you make me sick. Mangini knew what he had, and thats why everytime we needed a big first time, he put the ball in Brett’s hands. If you couldnt see that you are hopeless, in denial or just plain stupid
Our offense isn’t goin to go back to what it was. We have the coaches and off players on the same page. Everyone knows there role. Mangini knows that if he gives Favre a balanced run game, keeps them out of bad situations, 2nd and 3rd and long, he has a guy to take the team where he wants it to go. The two guys hugging on the field at Gillete after the game, deserve the credit for where the team is right now…

  18. charlie weiss is an obnoxious bore and a big fat jerkoff…but i’d take him as our offensive coordinator next year

  19. Im not sure if its Mangini controlling Favre or Schott controlling Favre or Favre being easy with the rest of the team. One thing is clear. After that game in buffalo where favre’s INT returned for TD, things have been very middle ground. Favre taking chances only when needed(esp with Keller). But he trusts the run game more than before. I’d like to see it remain this way for res tof the season. As the season progresses, run D and run O will prevail and we are pretty good at it.

  20. jetalif

I’m sure that it is a combo of # I and # 2 that contribute largely to #3 in your above observation. The facts are about 73 pass att. with 1 Int. three games after Buffalo and 105 pass atts. with seven Int’s in the three games before Buffalo. I look for the same Pennington type game to continue against the Titans and the rest of the season.

  21. Hank,
I like that kind of game. The only diff being that with favre longarm the safeties and CBs will keep it honest. With Chad we always got burnt since his throws loose zip beyond 15 yds. Last yr, so many winning/tying drives stalled due to CB’s jumping the routes. No wonder TJ is running like crazy with all that room.
I guess we shd enjoy these couple of yrs while Favre can throw strong.

  22. jet4lif:

There’s no doubt that the game “runs” differently with Farve in there. And I give him and keller all the credit in the world for thurs. win. I even felt a sense of confort with the ball in his hands in OT. But there is no way I would’ve felt the same before Buffalo. But you you are right we should enjoy every minute right now, but I’m not sure if he’ll be back. I’ve read he won’t be back but it’ll be something to see Raymond James Stadium full of green, white, red and blue jerseys.

  23. I’ve heard that if we make the playoffs, Favre is on board for the rest of his contract. He just had a huge house built from the ground up in Northwest Jersey close between the Jets facilities and NJ/Penn borderline. The Jets have made outstanding efforts to accomidate his family. He loves his teammates and his teammates love him. I dont know what kind of news you get in Florida but Mike T was on Mike’d Up in NEW YORK and the impression we got was if the team keeps on making progress like they have, Brett is gonna be here until at LEAST next year.
I know you hope against hope and want him gone, but at least leave a credible source of where you got your info, because I havent heard anything like that from anyone in New York or credible national source…

  24. I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT WHEN BRETT MANAGES THE GAME LIKE CHAD I ACTUALLY SMILE BECAUSE I KNOW HE CAN MAKE CERTAIN PASSES THAT CHAD WON’T MAKE. LIKE THE PASS TO COTCHERY FOR A TD. HE GOT THE BALL AND TURNED STRAIGHT TO COTCHERY’S SIDE. AND THREW A BULLET. THEN THE PASS TO KEELR 3 AND 15. I DONT MIND HIM BEING CHAD FOR THRE QUARTERS AND THEN DOING HIS THING FOR THE LAST QUARTER. WHAT AN UPGRADE? FROM A B+ QB TO AN A QB. BRING ON THE TITANS!!! AS A JETS FAN WE WILL REMEMBER THIS GAME…

  25. It’s funny how everyone thinks that Favre has to throw it 50 times to be “Favre”. The Haters all say he has to be “controlled by Mangini” or he’s only a “game manager” now. They act like he’s Trent Dilfer or Mark Rypien. The whole stop the gunslinger thing is misleading. I agree he has to play within the offense more, but he can’t and hasn’t been handcuffed. Mangini and Schott arent stupid. They know if they can help keep him in high percentage downs, the good far outweighs the bad. Hey, Babe Ruth struck out more the anybody for awhile, but he turned out to be pretty good.
I’ve made this point before, he’s doing the same thing Elway did in the late 90’s in Denver when they had the great run game. Michael Jordan became a jump shooter later in his career when he couldnt get up and just embarass people. Truly great players adapt to whatever style they have to in order to be successful. Eli Manning looked as bad as a Quarterback could look in the Minnesota and Buffalo games last year and it took one game vs New England to change his career and season.
Regardless of what people think about Mike Francesa’s opinion, the guy knows his stuff. He said that ” we are witnessing the renasaince of Favre”. I really cant see how anyone could argue with that after what has gone on these past few weeks. I guess there will always be haters, even if that type of attitude is remeniscent of the ignorant and losing mentality that has plagued the Jets for years. Fortunately for us, we have a HOF proven winner to fight the bad karma
