Link: Time to Count Our Chickens?

Looks like the top dogs over at the Daily News are getting a little jumpy at two teams in first place of their division. Andy Martino of the Daily News is wistful.

“… imagine the frenzy if the Giants defend their Super Bowl title against Brett Favre and the Jets this February in Tampa. Because of the teams’ New York names and Jersey addresses, the game would be truly regional event – call it the inaugural Turnpike Tournament … the game would be a culmination of nearly five decades of misunderstanding between the franchises and their fan bases.”

Meanwhile, Gary Myers isn’t ready to crown the Jets just yet.

Still, it was the day Favre officially became a Jet and forever earned a spot in the hearts of Jets fans. He beat the hated Patriots.

But let’s keep it in perspective. The win came against New England’s JV team. The Pats were missing Tom Brady, Laurence Maroney, Rodney Harrison, Adalius Thomas and Ty Warren. But when you are the Jets and you’ve been humiliated for years by the Patriots, you are not about to put an asterisk on this one.

There’s even a Daily News writer who ran a Madden sim of the SuperBowl. I’m not one who believes in curses or jinxes and I’m enjoying the ride; it’s exciting to have two teams atop the standings in the same town. But there’s still six weeks to play, anything can happen, so writing things like this just seems a bit over the top …

What do you think?

  1. Tiki Barber just said he thinks the Titans D will force Favre into errors but doesn’t think the Jets D is capable of forcing Kerry Colins into mistakes. I hope that finds its way onto the right bulletin board.

  2. Agreed, this is crazy talk, although I’d really like Jets to be playing more like G men – smashmouth running and dominating the other team with D.

p.s. Also, not whining about Thursday, but…Phillips had it exactly right tonight, it’s 14-10 in DC on 3rd and 8 with a bit over 2 min to go and rather than hand it off to sure handed Marion Barber for a stop up the middle and punt they do a nice little toss to get the first down and ensure the win.

  3. one week at a time boys

  4. Subwayfare – also note that Collingsworth is “going out on a limb” calling us to beat Tenn! Made the excellent points that our O line is finally getting some chemistry; Big Jinx has clearly learned his position, then added tounge in cheek that Brett’s gone 2 weeks w/o an Int.

Although I have loads of respect for Tiki, he clearly lost me on comment that he had more confidence in Kerry Collins not making a mistake in this game, than Brett, basically letting his personal relationship with Kerry overwhelm reason.

  5. It’s now time to focus on the Titans. Favre lately has what it takes to move the ball against the Titans. Long, methodical drives with quick passes and maybe you can catch the Titans D napping on a deeper pass. The Jets will need to run to keep the Titans D honest, but let’s not expect too much. The defense has a tall order to stop the Titans’ running game. If they do that, then pressure Kerry Collins and force him to win the game. The Bears and Jags did that, but they also didn’t put offensive pressure on the Titans by scoring. Let’s do what worked against the Bills and Pats…score and force the other team to keep pace. Cassell had Moss, Welker, Gaffney, Watson and his legs to run the hurry up and keep pace offensively. Collins has nowhere near the weapons or mobility. This is a winnable game, but I hope David Harris is back, we could use him against the run. And, if you love the game in the trenches, Mawae against Big Jenks is as good as it gets.

  6. JF4L-

I just hope KJ, Pace, Revis, Rhodes et. al take it as the insult it is.

  7. It should be a hard fought battle in the trenches, but I like the Jets in this match to hand the Titans their first loss. I think they will do it by stopping the run, pressuring the QB, special teams play, and moving the ball primarily with the passing game. Go Jets!

  8. titans game should be interesting. i think the matchup favors the jets. the jets can cover the OK wideouts of the titans and are good up front in stopping the run. jets will hav a tougher time running the ball in weeks past but passing the ball should open up some holes later on.. look for gang green to pull of a close one.. 20-14 jets

  9. It seems that I hate Gary Myers more than any other Jet basher.

  10. Would love to see the beast Kris Jenkins eat Mawae’s lunch. Plus show the world who the best DL lineman is. Getting a little tired of hearing how great Haynsworth is. I’m taking Mangold and the beast in this one!!

  11. The dream is alive and its one week at a time…The real hope and change this fall is #4!!

  12. Not to take anything away from the Titans, but if the Jets are firing on all cylinders Sunday, this could very well be a statement game to the rest of the league.

  13. It seems that the only way Gary Myers can keep his job at the Daily News is to provoke the ire of Jets. Can anyone recall anything resembling football acumen in one of his columns? Biased journalism aside, if the guy could make some intelligent observations once in awhile, I could at least respect him, but he is an absolute CLOWN.

  14. This game can only be won if the JETS do what they have been so successful all along. RUN THE BALL STOP THE RUN. No team has been able to stop them as they have won the last four games. If the Titans stop the Jets in their heels look for Mangini to employ a mix of schemes and substitutions. We should know if the Jets are having trouble by halftime. I would like to say that this team with the improvements that its had made will defeat the Titans THIS year. Whether in the playoffs or next Sunday.

  15. I go to school in upstate NY in Cortland. The game is on the same time as the Bills- and the same damn channel. So, the game won’t be on here. What are the chances this game gets flexed? is is a possibility?

  16. TITANS RULE!!! See ya next week!
