AFC East Standings: Week 12
Posted on November 18th, 2008 by Bassett
After last nights 29-27 loss for the Bills to the Browns, here are the current standings for the AFC East.
The Jets lead the AFC by just one game over the surging Dolphins and Patriots. Of the three above .500 teams in the AFC East, the Dolphins might have the lightest schedule, so watch out for the Phins down the stretch.

wow, did you take a “video professor” course in microsoft excel? you’re en fuego!
but seriously folks, love that the espn countdown crew all thought the nyj would win the division, except for tj.
As much as it pains me to say this…I think we need to root for Pats to beat Miami this weekend. That Miami schedule is absolute cake. I do think Miami will drop one game to one of the gimme games in KC, Stl, or SF (because they have been playing very average football these past few weeks), but if they beat New England they are in a very good position for the last 5 weeks. Could come down to week 17 if they beat new england.
For New England, they play a tough D with pittsburgh, and an improving cardinals team late.
Here’s another factor. If the Dolphins beat the Jets in the final week, as things stand right now, they win the tie-breaker based on common opponents. So even if the Jets win 4 of 5 until then, the Dolphins will likely be playing for the division. Chad vs Favre all over again in the Meadowlands.
Maybe we should root for the Pats this weekend to defeat the Fins, since they play Pitt and Ari and have a tougher road with all their injuries, and that way even if they are still in the hunt in the final week, we’ll be playing a team that is not.
I’m rooting for a natural disaster in the NE vs Mia game. Go tornado, hurricane, giant shark or act of god!
we definately have to root for new england this week for 2 reasons a) miami has an easy last 5 games b) new england has to face pittsburgh + have 4 road games out of 6.
Buffalo is just about out of it considering their loss last night as well as their last 4 games of the year will be tough.
The thing about the jets is that we are all so confident right now, but if we lose to the titans on sunday, we will be tied for first place with either miami or new england.
Once we get past Tenn, the Jets and Miami have about the same “weakness” of schedule. Guess who has the weakest ?
Ans: Indy even with playing Tenn the last game.
If Farv gets injured on Sunday it’s all over for the Jets boys, besides Chad isn’t good enough to continue to be consistent…..Go Pats!
This weekend either NE or Miami takes a loss and that team can only afford one more loss the rest of the way. That should put two of the three teams in the rear view mirror.
hey jonathan, thanks! and the best part was that all I had to do was PAY FOR SHIPPING!!!! ;)
Again with this rooting for teams we hate.
If we win all our games, we win the AFCE and likely are the #2 team in the conference, get a bye, etc.
We needlessly blew a game versus the Raiders. The hated raiduhs. I don’t think it is too much to hope we put one on the Titans to make up for it.
As others have posted, at least we should be able to stop their run.
Really, if the Fish and Pats win the rest of their games and we cannot, they deserve to play and we deserve to go home.

Yeah, how silly it is to root for our best interests in games other than the ones we’re playing. Let’s just forget altogether that there are 30 other teams and numerous games every week that affect our playoff chances. We can only be asked to pay attention to so much!
If you don’t think that the last three weeks have made up for the Raiders loss, then you probably also think that Brad Smith should be cut and Dustin Keller should be deactivated.
I think you have to root for Miami because then you have a chance to control your own destiny in case of a tie. The first tie breaker is head to head, then division record. There’s the possibility of a sweep with Miami in the season finale whereas we’ve split with the Pats.

But the Pats aren’t going 10-6, and we’re most likely going to have a better division record than them. Miami has a much better chance of going 10-6.

Since no one can empirically predict who’s going to have what record based on upcoming schedule, I’d rather have the team win that I have a chance to take out head to head. If – for whatever flukey reason – we wind up being tied with the Pats for the division lead on the last day, we’ll be at the mercy of math. If it’s the Dolphins there’s an opportunity to beat them straight up and take it.
I guess that makes some sense, but when the schedules are so dramatically different between NE and MIA, I think it’s reasonable to expect the Dolphins to be more likely to be 10-5 or 9-6 than the Pats by Week 17. I don’t see the Pats as nearly as much of a threat as the Dolphins. Therefore, if the Dolphins lose, that is good.
