Ty Law to Start in Tennesse?

Dave Hutchinson (Hutch to the uninducted) reported today that he thinks that Ty Law is probably going to get the start when the Jets line up Sunday in Tennessee.

When asked this morning if he expected to start vs. the Titans, veteran CB Ty Law said, “There’s a pretty good chance.”

Law, who was signed last week, would replace rookie Dwight Lowery.

Coach Eric Mangini may fine the veteran but the move isn’t exactly a surprise. Lowery has been a human scoreboard this season. He has given up six touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

Last week, Law, fresh off his living room couch, played 57 plays of 75 plays vs. the Patriots.

[I j]ust came back from practice, [the reporters] actually got to see a few plays instead of stretching. Law received extensive playing time but I’m not allowed to say if he was in the starting lineup but take a guess.

So Law started practice with the ones. Odd that they would make the switch and then let the reporters actually see it who seem to not see much in terms of actual practice and stretching only. Unless the coaches WANTED the reporters to see it. Is that my psychosis I am sensing has returned? It’s been a while, old friend …

Ahem. Why Hutch can’t say it, I don’t know nor care, but the fact of the matter is that the Jets are going to play whoever they think gives them the best chance to win this weekend and I guess that’s Law. I just hope that Lowery isn’t immediately shackled in Mangini’s “he’s progressing” dungeon … never to see the light of day again. Lowery is still one of the league’s leaders in passes defensed and forced fumbles for a corner … though there is an odor of warmly toasting bread emanating from his side of the formation from time to time …

  1. Bassett, I think you mean “though there is an odor…” in the last line. I’m only mentioning it because I had to read that line a few times before I got it.

  2. my psychosis strikes again … ;)

  3. 3 GOOD CORNERS IS A GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE. IF THEY ARE BEING USED CORRECTLY THERE IS A LESS CHANCE OF GETTING TOASTED.

  4. Lowery has real promise. More than Miller showed. I hope he isn’t buried on the bench. Unless we get Nmandi Asomugha, Lowery will be our number two next year. He had a bad deal with QBs avoiding Revis. He is just a rook from the 4th round.

  5. My recollection is that Lowery has been beaten on single coverage of wide receivers mostly where there’s no help. Can anybody confirm that?

Revis got lit up by Moss in his first season but he is blessed with better hips and speed than Lowery. Lowery seems to me like he will wind up as a terrific nickel or a good complementary corner where the help rolls to his side. His zone coverage has been superb and he plays the run very well most of the time. Maybe he’d be a good safety?

  6. by the way, did anyone read or hear the comment mangini made on the kicker situation. typical mangini. he was asked if he had made a decision on nugent or not and he said “no” and there was no follow up question cause they knew that is all they’d get out of him!

  7. I thought they drafted him to play safety originally. I want him to stay involved. He could be a good safety or corner in my opinion. If so, clear up cap space any way we can and get Asomugha. Best starting secondary in the league!!

  8. Weiss, you are correct about Lowery. He has gotten beaten on several plays when he is isolated. Smart but flat-footed.

The Titans have sub-par receivers and one heck of a running game.

It leads me to believe that Rhodes or Elam will be stacking the box more often than playing deep help.

Ty Law, off the couch or not, can still play tough man to man without much deep help against these hack receivers.

Lowery is a different case. He got beat by Gaffney, another role player/possession receiver last week. I think we might see Lowery more often in nickel packages on 3rd and long.

Send him on a corner blitz and see what happens?

    Side note:

Can we just take a minute and thank the Jets coaching staff for keeping our players in tip-top shape? No major injuries to key players or our off/def lines is quite an accomplishment in today’s NFL. Injury prevention is key to maintaining momentum in such a close race.

  9. JOSE -

Three good corners? We have one awesome corner and two corners that can be OK in spurts..

  10. Get Lowery in there on zones and 1st downs, and Law in for single coverage with Rhodes behind him for help.

  11. For what it’s worth we have put a lot on Lowery as a rookie and he hasnt been spectacular but he has held his own. Even if he doesnt start in place of Ty he will still be involved. The drop off from Rev’, Ty and Lowery is huge. All three of them will be involved a great deal. It may not be such a bad thing to limit Swipe’s responsibiltiy on the def side in favor of playing behind a once all world now crafty veteran corner. With the promise D-Low has shown he will continue to be a part of the Jets for a real long time.
Just a side thought, I know Elam has been good since stepping in but one day we might see Hollywood switch to the strong side safety and let Swipe use more of his ballhawk skills on the free side. Just a thought not saying its the way it should be or its gonna happen…

  12. Lowrey will become the next ray mickens

    LOWREY = RAY MICKENS

  13. SacDance 99

PTI just wished your boy a happy 52nd birthday. Good night Canada

  14. law starts//lowery contributes..its all good

  15. Doug, do you ever think we’ll see “Mark Gastineau Day” and his jersey retired? It seems like everyone has forgiven Strawberry, why no love for old No. 99?

I think Lowery can be a good NFL CB and should still be in the mix. He seems like a very smart player and working with Law might take him to the next level. He’s being targeted because nobody targets Revis, but he’s also delivered lots of big plays. Nobody wants to see him continually torched, but even good CBs have bad days, remember how Steve Smith abused DeAngelo Hall a couple years back? And, everyone thought PacMan was a bust his rookie season. It takes time for most CBs to learn and I still think Lowery is ahead of the curve.

  16. Lowery fought the Law, and the Law won! Keep processin son… your time’s gonna come.

Lowery just needs some seasoning salt. I’m expecting continued growth spelling Ty throughout the season with major success in ‘09!

  17. Lowery is a 4th round gem. The only reason he’s been picked on is because revis throws a blanket on whomever he’s covering. The kid’s a ballhog and hopefully he becomes a legit shutdown corner.

  18. I have no problem here as Lowery will maintain his starting role. The thing is that Mangini brought Law in as a corner/safety which is the player who sustitutes with the starters. This is mainly because behind Rhodes and Poteat there isn’t enough experience in the secondary. not to mention that Rhodes production has slacked off tremendously even to the point as I will blame YOU YES YOU “Kerry Rhodes!!!” for the troubles this secondary is having. Elam is making plays within his space, Lowery is making plays inside and outside of his space which is suppose to be YOUR JOB. Revis is shutting down his small end of the field. This game will be decided in the trenches however this game can just as easily fall on the shoulders of our pass defense which was totally exposed last week against New England. Rhodes step up man or you will have lost your chance to make it to the Pro Bowl and be respected fully amongst your peers. Eric Smith is lost so was Miller. Coleman has no chance and barrett is very limited. Law provides the cushion from a football perspective is good from a character and attitude perspective it is totally different. I think it is “disgusting” that we have another “selfish” player here. Whatever the case he needs to fall in line just like he did with the Patriots when they won their superbowls. Ty Law actually played in 2 superbowls but was a member of the three so we will see how much he has left. Mangini this sunday will use a balance between Law and Lowery so that it creates mismatches and forces the titans to play to their most explosive weapon which is Chris Johnson. This is where YOU YES YOU “ERIC “THE CAMEL” BARTON wil have to take Harris spot and play the fast guys. WHERE IS YOU KILLER MENTALITY THAT YOU HAD IN OAKLAND WHEN WE PICKED YOU UP? LETS GO!!!!

Lowery will start Law will rotate and Lowery will rotate as well.

  19. fred’s got it right, as well as others. dwight takes a beating cuz nobody’s game plan includes throwing towards revis. how many passes have you seen go his way? how many picks, and defended?(revis i mean) mix lowry and law in, see who helps the most with run support. i don’t care what the media says, if the jets stop the run, game over.

  20. RHODES WHERE ARE YOU I CANT SEE YOU????!!!!

  21. LAW COMWA WITH UPER BOWL AND CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE. HE ALSO COMES WITH PRACTICE AND PREPARATION EXPERIENCE. HE IS A WINNER!!! IM SURE HES COACHING AS MUCH AS HE IS PLAYING. THE LAW WILL DECIDE WHO IS TITAN.

  22. JOE B-. I SEE TWO VERY GOOD CORNERS (REVIS,LAW) AND ONE GOOD CORNER. REMEMBER WE DONT GET MUCH PRESSURE ON THE QB AS IT IS. IF WE DID THEY’LL ALL BE VERY GOOD CBs.

  23. The idea that we might get Asomugha is bordering on absurd and I’m not sure where it has come from. The Jets have many of their contract based on incentives, so their success this year would indicate many of these incentives are being met. The team already had to backload contracts such as Kerry Rhodes and Kenyon Coleman just to get Favre’s salary to fit under the cap and next year, if Favre returns, his salary will be $1m higher (and if he doesn’t they will have to pay for a replacement somehow. Asomugha will probably get somewhere in the region of a $100m deal, so there is absolutely no chance the Jets will be able to get him. In fact, they’re unlikely to have much money to spend at all unless they don’t resign any of their free agents (of which there are a lot), in which case the cash will be needed to replace those guys.

Fonz: Why are you picking on Rhodes (who, as I already pointed out to you in a previous post has really stepped up his game in terms of impact plays over this four game winning streak) and Barton (who is coming off a game where he had 17 tackles and is arguably having his most complete season as a Jet)?

  24. I know that when I mentioned Asomugha I was living in fantasy land. He is something amazing tho. Who are our free agents this year?

  25. Lazily cutting and pasting from another comment I made:

“Clemens will be in a contract year next year.

Ratliff, on the other hand is on a one-year futures contract, so they need to sign him to a new deal after the season or he will hit the open market. Clowney is the same.

In fact, there are a bunch of guys contributing this season that they will have to decide whether to resign. (Elam, Wright, Spencer, Barton, Nugent, Franks, Mosely, Carroll, Richardson, Murrell, Poteat, Law). I think that’s the list…”

  26. Franks… Nugent… Pretty easy cuts. Elam, Wright, Murrell will take vet minimum . Mosely and Barton will be the tough choices. They will probably let Spencer walk and cut Kassell. They always cut Poteat and who knows about law. Carroll and Richardson… I have no clue.

  27. Ratliff and Clowney don’t have 3 years to qualify for unrestricted FA.
