Link: King on Jets

PK writes his MMQB and talks extensively about the Jets and relates a story about Brett Favre and his self-doubt after the trade to New York this summer. Favre related what went through his head in August.

“As a matter of fact, after I reached the agreement with the Jets, we were in the plane coming up to New Jersey and I thought, Oh no! What am I doing? I’m making a big mistake.

“It might have been more than I was up for. But then [wife] Deanna said something to me that made sense. She said, ‘Hey, whether you’re here one year, two years, or five weeks, whatever, you’ve got to be committed.’ And she was right. I owed it to the Jets to give them everything I had.

“And it’s been great. It hasn’t been all smooth, but I’ve enjoyed it. I’m having fun. Now, if we were 3-8 instead of 8-3, I know I’d be back on the farm next year and it’d be over. But I’m just going to play as hard as I can every week the rest of the way and we’ll see how it goes.”

Thank you very much Deanna.

  1. Actually, he talks extensively about his hero Favre and how the Titans lost. Not so much about the rest of the team, really. He does throw a bone to Jenkins, I suppose. Still, for a team that now has beaten his beloved Pats and the undefeated Titans, he sort of glosses over them, as usual.

  2. He does gloss over him and gushes about his new boy toy Matt Cassel. Do we really need to compare Tom Brady’s and Matt Cassel’s first 11 games? Tell Cassel to go win 3 super bowls…also tell King that the 2001 Patriots are a shell of the 2008 Patriots (not a fair comparison)

  3. King is a “what have you done for me lately” kind of guy, especially with the Jets. It’s amazing that we beat the Titans and all of a sudden he has a man-crush on Favre and ranks the Jets #2 in his “Fine Fifteen” when just three weeks ago, the Jets couldn’t even crack the list and the attention that he barely paid was all negative. His comments are worthless.

  4. I do have to admit though that the press attention is nice. We finally get the respect we have been looking for.

  5. Not sure why Jets fans are down on Cassel, other than simply the fact that he’s a Patriot. Not for nothing, but I hope that Tannenbaum takes a serious look at him when he becomes an FA. He’s better (by a long shot IMO) than what the Jets currently have coming up behind Favre. Just a thought.

  6. I’m not interested in making a guy who can’t throw over 20+ yards consistently my QB of the future. I’m tired of Dink and Dunk. Favre is doing it well solely because teams now that he could belt one out at a moments notice.

I think the Favre trade was brilliant, and I think he is doing very well, but it kinda upsets me that the most important factor to continue playing for the Jets is our record at the time if interview.

    King sucks. Tool.

  7. I said in the off-season that winning will stop the disrespect in the media. If we keep winning everyone will jump on the bandwagon.

  8. Re: Matt Cassell next season.

I can’t help but think about Scott Mitchell whenever the subject of Cassell in FA next year comes up. Mitchell looked like the next sure thing when he subbed for Marino, and went to Detroit the next year and did absolutely nothing for them.

  9. ramble914, excellent point I’ve been thinking that as well, especially since it might even be Detroit that makes a big play for Cassell. Another name that comes to mind is Rob Johnson, super sub in Jacksonville, signs a big deal with Buffalo, then he’s not so good. A big part of the success these guys have is that they were slowly groomed with their original teams and learned the systems that they played in, it is very often a mistake to assume that same success will tranlate to another team with different coaches, systems and personell. Anyone think Cassell looks this good playing for Detroit?

On top of that his agent is already talking about parameters of a deal similiar to the one Aaron Rodgers just signed in Green Bay, to me that makes him even a bigger gamble, I wouldn’t make a play for this guy no matter what Favre decides to do, I’ll just be happy that the Pats are losing some quality depth behind Brady.

  10. Yeah, just like the Eagles and AJ “The Ace” Feeley. He looked great when McNabb went down. The he went to the Dolphins and got sacked and booed.

  11. I’m not sold on Cassel. He is throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker and despite the Super Bowl, that OL is great.

I agree that if the JETS got him he’d either suck or be average, and they’d sell the farm to get him like the Texans with Schaub.

I’d rather see them try out Ratliff and sign someone else.

  12. Paying huge money for Cassell flies in the face of what makes the Pats successful. They have built a system that makes stars out of good athletes taken later in the draft. I’d much rather see the Jets focus on the further development of a player like Ratliff than blow a fortune on Cassell.

  13. cassell is the next derek anderson, please people. first off new england will franchise him for next season bc they dont know if wonder boy is going to be wonder boy again

we have a solid backup and bf will mostly want to push it one more season

  14. DSmizzle, I see your point but…if Cassel were on the Jets, he’d be throwing to Coles, Cotchery, Stuckey, Keller, Washington, etc. And I’d argue, based on current performances, that the Jets O-line is just as good as the Pats.

The Jets aren’t the Lions. You folks that think Cassel is only good because of his system and the players around him must then think the Jets system and players are garbage if you think he’d be an instant bust on our team.

  15. Facts about Matt Cassel and other tidbits

1.The Dolphins single covered Randy Moss.
    2. All of his touchdowns against the Dolphins were to Randy Moss.
    3. Randy Moss holds the single season TD record for WRs
    4. The Patriots went 18-1 last season behind the most incredible offense the NFL had ever seen.
    5. Wes Welker could have a 100 yd game with anyone at QB

    What is he worth again?

  16. Cassel is pretty good guys. He has got good legs back there and can make all the intermediate passes. However, like you all said I would like to see him do this for more than one year without Moss, Welker, Watson, Gaffney, Faulk and Sammy Morris. I wouldnt want any part of Matt Cassel if I was the Jets. Something about this guy screams Billy Volek and AJ Feely. Lets see what this guy does against a pass rush like Pitts. Because straight up without the gimmick of the no huddle and abscence of Kris Jenkins, Cassel was just getting field goals.

  17. The way I see it, we won’t be able to afford him anyway, even if Favre leaves. Sure, his salary would be lower, but it will extend into the future, where the Jets have backloaded deals such as Coleman’s and Rhodes’ that will catch up with them.

It’s not just the scheme and personnel, but the fact he has had a few years to familiarize himself with it/them. Can whoever signs him next year (although it could well be that they franchise him, although I’d expect them to look for a tag and trade deal) really expect him to come in and be comfortable right off the bat?

  18. (…and I still haven’t seen him make a downfield throw).

Do I dislike him just because he’s a Pat? Absolutely.

  19. Didnt the Dolphins see how we defensed Moss and Welker?? Hated seeing the Pats win but it is nice to finally shut up the Dolphins and Parcells loving media for a week…..Still stunned the Titans were unbeaten. I know were a good team but they looked awful. Besides Finnagen the D looked okay and the offense was a joke….Maybe were just that good??

  20. JustAGreenGuy, he’s worth a look, nothing more, nothing less.

  21. its time teams start taking us seriously period… i dont care if the media pays us no mind who cares… espn is busy talking about the mcnabb situation when there season is over basically… and worrying about lendale whites bitchy comments… while we get a tiny segment… its ok i dont want the attention just keep winning boys we will sing the teams praises all day and night

  22. You are only as good as your next game. Cassell to the 49ers next year. They need a QB desperately. Hands off to the Brick. You are a House !!!

  23. if you want to gamble on a player, lets pick up vick when he gets out of jail

this is a bet i would take, vick is a good player that just ran with the wrong group.

  24. Hopefully he’s learning how to read a defense in prison. No matter how good of a player you are if you cant read you cant get a ring.

  25. Packer Fan’s are hating life right now!! What’s that qb over there? Aaron who?????

  26. John r: Pats wont franchise him. Cost too much.

  27. If I were to sign a QB in the off season it would be Leftwich. He’s healthy, has a high football IQ and a cannon arm. And, he’s only 28. But, I think the Jets have to see what they have in Ratliff, with his size, mobility and great arm, he could be a real gem. I think Cassell might have a future in the NFL, but he’s too risky for the type of money that he’ll command. Also, I still think Derek Anderson can be coached up (and, what type of season would he have had if Edwards didn’t drop something like 10 bombs). Guys like Leftwich, Anderson and Losman all have great arms, are young and should get a peak from teams looking for a QB, just not necessarily the Jets.

  28. Isn’t the knock on Leftwich that he has a slow wind up and release that would make it hard for him to win a game that required darts coming out of short drops, like yesterday’s?

Hard to say from what we’ve seen so far, but I like what Ratliff showed in preseason.

  29. john r, Vick didn’t “run” with the wrong crowd, he “ran” that wrong crowd, there’s a big difference, I know someone will give him a chance when he gets released but I pray its not the jets, and I’m fairly confident in our current brain trust not to take that gamble.

  30. haven t been here in a while, but i kind of confused, is there no faith in clemens anymore?

during the summer 65% of this site backed this guy and the other 35% with pennington.

have i been away that long that clemons has become obsolete?

  31. I still like Clemens and some others do too. Ratliff became popular with his strong preseason. Next training camp it should be a good battle if Clemens (in his contract year) loses I believe he will be traded to a QB needy team.

  32. Personally, I have not given up on Clemens, rather am very intruiged about Brett Ratliff.

  33. And I dont think the Jets are going to be looking for a quarterback this up coming offseason, whether or not Favre retires.

They have Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, and Eric Ainge already under contract and waiting to be tested

  34. clemons had a great pre season 2 yeasr ago

  35. has anyone discussed on this site, where we think we would be if pennigton was still here?

  36. We argue it every couple days. At this point can’t say all that much. Pennington wouldn’t have won the last two games.

  37. I’d love to see how Ratliff would fare- the guy was a highlight reel this summer. Personally, Clemens seems to be less intriguing to me- we know what he can do and we know what to expect. And who knows about Body-Builder/IR QB Erik Ainge. It would be nice to get another year of Favre- I’m not holding out hope on that though.

  38. 1. There is no way the Pats are franchising Cassell. With a $10MM franchise tag it would mean $20MM+ tied up in the QB position.
    2. Cassell is in his fourth year in the same system. He will not be a solid QB in his first year in a new system. Any team that is not in a rebuilding mode will probably want to pass on signing him.

  39. Ask Fonnzie where we would be with Chad!!!
    Come on Fonz…tell us.
