Although I was watching the game Sunday with family and friends and trying to actually be social rather than dissect each play … just a quick question did anyone else see Vernon Gholston manhandling two blockers towards the end of the game? Cause I did …
For all you doubters, we’ve not seen what this kid is capable of. Give him time … we all knew that Keller would be the immediate contributor of the two.

Nice to finally see Gholston out there on Defense. Imagine if he starts to put it all together, coming in on third downs. This defense will only get better with more players contributing. How about Elam the last 4 weeks making a huge play in every game he has starting.
-
Bassett this may be asking for a bit much but could you somehow get that play and post it on here? I’ve been praying to see this guy actual play let alone presure the quarterback. Thanks
-
yeah, i saw him get a bit of pressure on a couple of plays. but i also saw him get pancaked on a chip by a rb. typical talented rookie: up then down. still, it was encouraging to see him play a bit.
off the top of my head, i don’t remember seeing him do anything other than bull rush, though. any signs of actual pass rush moves or technique? also, is there anybody on the coaching staff who can even teach pass rush technique? i guess bryan thomas or jim herrmann, but is there a coach who who played de or olb?
-
Ian we still got Bryan Cox on our staff i think.
-
Off topic: Favre is even getting love from Football Outsiders:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3723735
What next? Solomon Wilcots issues a public apology for predicting that the Jets would only have 5 wins this season?
-
thankf fred. when i typed bryan thomas, i meant bryan cox. still, he was ilb and really mostly a speed blitzer through the middle, as i recall. (could be wrong…)
anyway, the point is that you don’t see jets olb’s use spin moves or dips or anything fancy very often. i wonder if it is part of the scheme, helping them maintain lanes and gap control, etc. or if it is a lack of technique.
-
The only play i saw was him getting knocked on his ass.
-
I think you may have been a little bit high from the Jets winning so big when VG got some playing time. I saw him a few times. I saw him miss a read on covering a RB into the flat and got there late, get knocked on his can from a chip block and saw him seriously lack hustle after ball was thrown short on his side. Not much to mention.
-
I missed that one too. I saw him a few times. Straight bull rush without any technique or impact or just lost in space. Yes, it’s still early but I didn’t see anything yesterday that even hinted at making a play. He has to turn that corner at some point. “Manhandling” blockers 10 yards away from the play is nice but it doesn’t really prove much.
-
He had 2 QB hurries by my count.
-
I saw him get into the back field a couple times.. but one particular time, he seemed lost after he got past offensive line.. it was just like a deer in the headlights kinda thing, where he should have been attacking the QB but was just standing there.
BTW Ian, LT (lawrence taylor) is supposedly taking gholsten under his wing and teach him things. hopefully some day it shows.
-
I’ve been waiting to see VG on the field as an impact player much as the next guy. Fortunately or unfortunately for the Jets he’s only the 5th or 6th best LB on the staff. The real issue is paying him the “top 5 draft dollars” which eats up a lot of cap space. If we were horrible he’d be out there from day one but we have a pretty good LB core so he sits and learns.
Let’s hope between Mangini, Sutton, Cox and others we can coach, teach, and motivate this guy into a Nasty defensive presence.
btw, I’m watching MNFB and #51 of the Saints looks kind of ordinary so far, so maybe there’s hope for VG.
-
We’ve talked about this before, but Mangini and company finally started to get Gholston involved while addressing our horrible “Prevent” defense. Mangini didn’t use the 3-man pass rush when the Jets got ahead against the Titans. Instead, he used a 4 man d-line to rush and dropped everyone else in coverage. Gholston was the DE on the 4 man d-line, the position he played in college. I think its a good way to work Gholston in while addressing a key weakness of the defense.
-
Well, I posted on another thread that he finally got a tackle, but I didn’t see him manhandle anyone. He still looks very slow to me, let’s hope this is just the beginning and that he really comes around next year.

SOMEONE PLEASE CREATE A WEBSITE DEDICATED TO REVOKING THIS MANS RIGHT TO WRITE FOR ANY NEWSPAPER OR APPEAR ON ANY SPORTS TV SHOW EVER AGAIN!!!!
one week after saying the jets win over the pats on thursday was no big deal b/c of how many pats were hurt….how long is any pats fan or writer allowed to use tom brady being hurt as an excuse???!!!!!????!!!!! what the $@@$ do they put in the water up there??!!!??
ryan today says the jet win over the titans was nothing special. even went back to the pats win by saying “we wouldnt be having this conversation right now if the pats hadnt brainlocked and gave up a 3rd and 15 conversion to the jets in overtime”
yeah bob….well no team can ever win without scoring more points then the other team….duh…
i am so f—–g sick of anything and anyone from the new england area….and this man is actually considered a respected sportswriter.
listen to this clip and decide for yourselves.
and bassett or bent or someone please create a way we can let this man know that he is beyond the worlds biggest douchebag.
-
Yes, Bob Ryan is an idiot – hey, he’s a pats fan, what do you expect?
On another note, how awesome was it to see McDropsey out there bobbling passes for the titans?
-
Missed where he manhandled blockers but did see him use his bull rush(suprise) to put some pressure on Collins just before he threw one down field. I am not killing VG because I think he will be a player but I have the same problem with him now that i did coming out of OSU. He does not run through ball carriers. He uses his speed to get there and then slows down. At that size he should be destroying people.
-
i saw him make a nice assisted diving tackle on special teams.
-
Ha haa – good stuff Klecko. Ryan sounds desparately in denial – almost hyperventilating. I like him going to every excuse for how the Jets just cannot be any good – even blaming their easy schedule. Obviously doesn’t realize the Patsies have the easiest in the league. What a d-bag!
Oh yeah – on Gholston – I was at the game and he was pretty much lost out there. He’s a project and this season’s poster child for limiting guaranteed money to rooks.
-
why cant they use gholston on 3rd down passing situations and tell him just to go get the opposing qb, thats it dont worry about anything else but getting after the qb
-
C’mon this guy should be doing a lot more. A bit disappointing so far. Hope he will mature considering we could have had Mayo.
-
Watching MNF. Thank God Green Bay got rid of that interception machine. Whoops.
-
Packers organization = dumbest organization in football.
-
i still don’t think Mayo is a great fit in the 3-4
I’ve seen him blown way off the line a lot more than the way he played against us 2 weeks back.
-
I think with time, Gholston will turn out to be a decent player. I think its too early to call him a bust. If he’s still non-existent next year, then we’ll talk!
-
cbiscuit….i flew down for the game….enjoyed the mcdropins as well =)
everyone in nashville was very cool….great city.
-
What happened to the Jets up for weekly awards? Who won coach of the week, if not mangini?
-
still not a good pick considering we have a win now approach!!!!! jerod mayo anybody?
-
I expected around 5-7 sacks from VG this yr, at this pace he wil be lucky to get 5-7 tackles. That said, at least he logged some minutes vs Titans and hopefully he can begin to contribute some down the strech run to the playoffs.
-
Remember, Gholston came out as a junior. This is really his senior year. He’s really behind two very good OLBs, so it’s hard to get playing time, and that’s to our advantage too. No sense labeling him a bust on an 8 and 3 team either.
-
Gholston is a raw athlete. He lacks instincts, physical prowess, and doesn’t use his hands well against blockers. He looks lost in coverage, and on most running plays.
I have always envisioned Gholston helping our prevent D. With Gholston, we can stack the line with four, and drop everyone else in coverage. This allows Gholston to play defensive end; his position of choice in college. Mangini did this against the Titans, and Gholston looked a little bit more like the player we drafted.
Gholston will turn out to be a stellar player. He is doing all the right things, and the linebackers who are starting for the Jets have been playing at an all-pro level. There has been no need to rush Gholston into the mix.
Playing special teams will bring Gholston familiarize him with the speed of the NFL.
I expect him to dominate next year, and learn a lot from LT this offseason.
-
off the subject…but am i the only one who thiks mosley is undrrated? dont kno how ols he is…but looks like he can turn into a potential BEAST, i see him in alot of sub packages when KJ takes a rest…isnt he more of a DT than a DE?…or NT in our case
-
*old*…sorry for the typos
-
He was a DT in minnesota and we moved him to DE. I assume he gets around when we go into the 4-3. I know he has been a DE in our 3-4.
-
Sorry, but I was specifically watching gholston every time he was in and I thought he looked bad. He missed a tackle that turned into an assist when someone else got the guy. He showed no moves rushing the QB. He Looked so slow and “stiff” as a linebacker that i am not sure he can even be a linebacker. He doesn’t look fluid at all. Having said that I wish him the best and hope he improves.
-
I watched hi a few plays as well and he was stiff. he bull rushed and as others have pointed out, got knocked on his ass on a chip by the RB. He doesn’t show any explosiveness. If he was explosive but just not making plays you could see potential, but he just looks like a bodybuilder in pads waddling around out there. Is it me, but he sure looked faster in College.
5 games left maybe he gets more time and improves. Then works his ass off in the off season. But to be honest he seems more Bryan thomas than Shawn merriman– and we drafted him to be merriman.
Also there is history of Ohio State players not adding up. AJ Hawk OK, bobby Carpenter, BUST, Nugent, OK, Schlegal, BUST, and now VG. Lets hope VG breaks the cycle, next year.
-
Green dream–
How about our boy Mangold? He’s been very solid for a Buckeye.
-
I hate OSU but there are alot more good players than bad ones. Not to mention Ted Ginn Jr hasnt looked to bad once he got a decent QB.
Enough with the Mayo comments. We didnt need a MLB? Its like saying we should have drafted a center. We had D Harris. Mayo is a 4-3 MLB. We had one in Vilma and we traded him….rightfully so!!
-
R u kidding me…he’s horrible…he is super slow !!!
He has no idea how to anticipate and to think the Patriots drafted one slot behind us and have an impact linebacker who was the best player on the field last thursday against the Jets…….oh by the way he is at the top of the league in tackles
you either have or you don’t….. project????? please
this guy is a bust -
I’m pleased to hear he was manhandling, but I also saw him chasing Collins on a roll out right, to the far sideline, and he just did not get after it. He was getting pressure but he almost seemed to pull up.
He’s a bright guy and has the desire to get better, but he also gives off a passive quality. He hasn’t yet shown the heart of a beast. But calling him a bust is knee jerk, and comparing him with other picks is pointless. We all knew he was a project and, granted, projects shouldn’t be picked 6th (?) over all, but he will improve. And with the players we have now, the team can afford to continue to develop him. The money and the pick are already spent — the good news is we still hold his ticket and the 50/50 odds that he comes up a player.
Besides, it’s probably more relevant to worry about the things that are actually going to determine how successful this season is going to be. Because Gholston is not of them. -
I was skeptical about all of the moves that Tangini made in the off-season. They have made a believer out of me. Calvin Pace, Kris Jenkins, Damien Woody, Tony Richardson, and Dustin Keller have all worked out as promised. I trust their ability to turn Gholston into a player. Remember, they are changing Gholston’s position. We are doing just fine, without him. Don’t panic.
-
I think everyone agrees that it is way too early to make any judgements about VG, especially given his lack of playing time. However, the real issue is that he was the #6 pick. You don’t expect the #6 pick to be a mega-project. Mario Williams had a rough first year but at least he was on the field learning his craft. That experience showed in year 2. I was very alarmed not to see VG on the field during the blow out of the Rams. At least he got some action with the Titans but I don’t see how he progresses without getting more meaningful playing time. It’s obvious the coaches just don’t trust him at this point.
-
Jvsvn, I don’t think it is that the coaches don’t trust VG. Why take out Pace or Thomas, to play a rookie. I agree, he should have seen more time in the Ram game but, let him learn, he will have plenty of time to crush QB’s in the future.
-
Hey Bent and Harvlis,
I don’t disagree with any of your points. The issue is more with how pro sports is structured these days. You pick a guy at #6 and lock in huge cap numbers well before the guy is even ready to play (as is clearly the case with VG). Clearly, the Jets knew what they were getting into. Hence the Calvin Pace signing. This is why teams trade down sometimes. Drafting a guy like VG is a big risk. If it works out down the road, then great. As a Jets fan, I certainly hope it does. It is just obvious that we won’t have any real info to go on until at least next year. Speaking as a fan, that’s a little disappointing. Who wouldn’t want to see VG terrorizing QB’s now! But I understand what’s going on. Given how all the other off season moves have worked out, I think the FO has earned some slack regarding the wisdom of the VG draft. I’m willing to wait.

Gholston will atleast be a Brian Thomas type player for us in the future but I definately think he can become something bigger. He’s got all the tools to do it, but he just cant seem to adjust to the pro level yet.
Even with the way Gholston has been, it still has been a pretty good draft with Keller and Lowrey.
