An Open Letter to Patriots’ fans
Since our site has been invaded by Pats fans this week in the wake of their team’s stirring victory over the Miami Dolphins (who, as we all know, are led by the likes of Chad Pennington, a man we all admire but who has, to coin a phrase, a ten-cent body and million dollar head, Vonnie Holliday and Ted Ginn), we are reminded that Patriots’ fans harbor an ongoing conceit following their defeat at the hands of the Jets twelve days ago. That peculiar and self-serving idea clutched in the hearts of Pats’ fans is that the two teams, NY and NE, were evenly matched last week and only a coin toss determined the outcome.
I would suggest an alternative explanation. From my point of view, the Jets, who were still learning how to win, did nearly everything to prop up the sagging Patriots. I maintain that, in many ways, the Jets conspired to keep the game close.
Sorry to say it, fellows, but 24-6 was no fluke. It was the awakening of the creature that would, one week later, utterly destroy the undefeated Titans. But, Mangini, who was five years old when Belichick got his first coaching job, became too cautious in the Pats’ game once he had a lead. He did what football fans graphically describe as failing to step on the vulnerable neck of a defenseless foe. So, the Pats came back much to their credit. But, in crunch time, two long drives which are becoming the hallmark of this revitalized Jets team, ultimately did what the Jets have had a hard time doing in recent years–dominate the Pats’ defense.
For Pats’ fans who think we are equal in talent, I submit the following facts. Your nose tackle is old and has lost a step, your ends are often injured, your linebackers, with the exception of Samuel (a free agent, like Calvin Pace) and Mayo (a good draft pick, finally, after three years of terrible choices) are antedeluvian and your corners are weak (need I mention Ellis Hobbs who Pats fans call “toast.” Your offense is excellent at the skill positions, with the exception of running back where Maroney is your best weapon (and he aint that good), and your O-line is good, but not great.
While your team has, and may still be, formidable, a question lingers. From where, I would ask, is improvement expected? Many of your players are aging, some not so gracefully. Your recent drafts have been a dismal failure by most standards. You have made excellent free agent moves, but so have the Jets. Aren’t you really in a slow but unstoppable decline that you have failed to recognize?
Remember that the Jets are only now starting to reap the benefits of the eight new players they added to their starting unit. That’s 36% of the team. You have to give a team with that many new players a half season to integrate free agents and draft picks into their system. We started off slow and had the inevitable “bad loss” but we’re coming on now. After half a season, we’re 3-0, 8-3 overall, we beat you and we just demolished the consensus best team in the conference. How’re we doin?
So, if you like your chances, fine. But, keep it to yourself. Tell the guys at the bar in Malden about it. Stay in little Boston and have a drink to your memories of past glory. Lord knows they may have to last a while.

Talk about feeding the trolls.
Did you write that with a quill pen?
Andrew, Row is right, you’re just feeding the trolls by posting this. Does it really matter what Pats fans think or say? The only thing that matters is the indisputable FACT that the Jets won that game. Period.
Haha very nice.
I still think the Patriots are dangerous though, even if not quite as good as they used to be.
Plus, next year when Favre most likely retires and Brady returns to the Patriots I think the story might be different (this is coming from a lifelong Jets fan).
I’ve got a question though, Cassel is a free agent next year, isn’t he? I’m not saying this is necessarily viable, but if he keeps improving what about the chances the Jets might pick him up?
Just a thought, though not necessarily a good one…
LOL. Nicely written.
I think I was just summarizing what I’ve concluded about that game and how I see the future.
On the other hand, I may have been trying to establish an alternative version of reality to change the hearts and minds of football fans everywhere. For too long, the Belichick-as-heroic-genius myth has held sway in the AFC East and the NFL as a whole.
Consider my post the first salvo in the creation of a new, alternative, Jets’ myth. The Jets (cross your fingers) are on the rise. Journalists everywhere will need a heroic context with which to view the renaissance of the Jets after forty years. We,as Jets’ fans, need to lead the way in furnishing a self-satisfying reality that can be fed, like pablum, to the hoi polloi.
I offer the rise of the young protege and the decline and fall of the former King. Hail to the King!
Dear Pats fans,
Your woman are covered in freckles and your egos are swollen like vince wilpork.
The Jets need to stay as far away from Cassel as possible. He is more of a product of New Englands system then anything else. If Favre leaves, the Jets should sign Jeff Garcia. It’s also interesting to see how much more time they give kellen clemens, questions becomes should they draft another QB to start grooming?
This is all if Brett retires, which I dont think he will
Andrew, I agree with that. The Jets are on the rise. But can the eulogy for he Pats really be written when Brady could very well come back next year and once again be one of the best QBs in the league? That team is still very competitive.
I’m cautiously optimistic for the Jets future. It looks great at a lot of key positions, but you have to keep in mind that we’re not going to have Favre forever. Once we have to depend on Cellens, Ratliff or Ainge it’s going to be a bit more difficult for us, especially when we’re battling a healthy Brady twice a year.
I’ve also been wondering whether the Jets should make a play for Cassell. Its unlikely that the Pats will resign him and Favre is very likely to retire.
I’m not sold on Clemens, little Brett is intriguing but it might still make sense to go after Cassell.
Misery
1) Cassel’s agent is going to ask for a lot of money and somebody (SF, Minnesota?) is going to give it to him.
2) We’ve got Ratliff, Ainge and Clemens under contract and Tannenbaum used up roster spots to protect them. Clearly, he thinks they’re worth it. After this season, who will argue with his judgment?
3) Favre is showing these young guys every week how to win.
4) The rest of the team is learning how to win.
5) Cassel’s looking like a HOFer with three talented receivers and a good tight end. CP looked good in 2002 with similar weapons. Do we want him back?
6) The lesson of the one season wonder. Didn’t the Dolphins cut AJ Feely, who shone bright for Philly a few years back? There are other examples.
I’m not making personnel moves anymore. Tannenbaum, I reluctantly admit, is way better than I am.
I should clarify a bit. That team (the Pats) is still very competitive without Brady.
Pats fans have short memories. I read a lot of rants this week about how the Jets pulled a “NY Yankees” and brought in a bunch of free agents to win now.
What do you call the signings of Moss, Welker, Jordan, Morris, etc.?? How quikcly we forget!!
As for “If Brady was palying you lose that game”…blah, blah, blah. If Grandma had balls, she would be Grandpa. Brady did not play, we scored more points and won….period. Everyone in the NFL has an injury story at this point in the season. Move on already!
“If grandma had balls…”. Thanks for giving me a good laugh Matt. If you look at the Jet Pats game, how much of a diffeence would Brady have made? Ok, he doesn’t miss a wide open Moss, but then again he also wouldn’t rush for 62 yards. I wrote it right after that game. All the “you guys beat our second team” crap, is just that, crap. Bottom line, Jets are a better team right now. As for looking to the future, I’ll leave that to Tannenbaum. This is the best the Jets have looked since 98′. I’m going to enjoy every minute of the present.
Jeff Garcia? Please dont ever suggest that again
I like how this looks exactly like something you’d read from a Pats fan on their websites. Makes me laugh. Also, a bit off topic, but this was just on ESPN:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3723735
I dont think Bretts going anywhere atleast for 1 more year. He seems like he likes it here and is getting what he deserves. However, we have to draft a QB in the draft, no two ways about it. It’ll give the young QB a chance to watch, learn and hopefully play like Brett can. Evidence shows that a young QB prospers better when he sits out his first year learning the system and taking it all in. Examples, Carson Palmer (Id take him on the Jets after Brett), Eli sat out the first half of his first season, Chad Pennington waitied for Vinny T, Hasselbeck played all those years behind Favre, and Tony… yes.. Romo say a few yrs before he got a chance.
Donovan ?
Not all Patrots fans are freckled. Look at Brady and Gisele – both live in NYC and root, root, root for the Yankees!
“The Jets need to stay as far away from Cassel as possible”
Perhaps they should resign Victor Hobson and ask him to pass rush him then. ~ZING~
I agree with sentiments expressed above, please don’t encourage them. The ones who come on here and are unnecessarily confrontational aren’t going to last very long anyway, trust me.
In other news the injury “bug” is plagueing John Abraham, again.
http://www.ajc.com/falcons/content/sports/falcons/stories/2008/11/24/atlanta_falcons_john_abraham.html
Yeah, I saw him go down and I was like “thanks for coming, John, see you next September”.
He’s a legit Pro Bowler this year, but I’m glad to be rid of anyone who puts their livelihood ahead of a possible AFC Title game berth.
Jeff Garcia is a bum and McNabb looks like he doesn’t even want to play football anymore. I also really, really hope we don’t go anywhere near Derek Anderson. Cassel’s a much more intriguing option. This upcoming QB draft class looks like it’s going to be pretty weak, unfortunately.
Every possible gripe or excuse Pats fans had for losing to the Jets went out the window this past Sunday. There’s no way in hell the Pats could have done what we did in Nashville with their current team, and it’s highly doubtful that they could’ve done it even with a healthy team. Remember that we’re missing one of our top three guys on defense too. End of whining.

Sorry for the double post!
Does nobody remember Brett Ratliff! Im tired of hearing all this the jets should sign matt cassel talk. Why would we do that when we have someone like ratliff. I know he isnt proven but he should get priority over going out and signing matt cassel. Im not totally against it but give brett junior a chance. Ratliff should be our #2 QB anyway. He did way better than clemens did during the preseason
He isn’t the #2 because Clemens knows the offense better. Can we wait until the offseason to see which one is better? In my eyes they are pretty damn equal. If Clemens passing didn’t lead to so man drops I would be more excited to have him. They both played mediocre preseason defenses (Ratliff a little more considering he wa steh 3rd QB). Lets wait and see.
Good point JustAGreenGuy. It seemed to me the reason why receivers dropped clemen’s passes is because it came out of his release all wobbly. I remember watching those preseason games and noticing that.
Not that thats an excuse for them to not catch it
The Patriots have been a great team for a long time. For them to take our team to OT, with all of the players that they are missing – I wouldn’t exactly be talking trash about them. We have to make the Playoffs and do something there, before we can open our mouths. It wasn’t that long ago that we lost to Oakland. Are we a different team now, absolutely. But, we haven’t done it long enough, to say anything to New England fans. if we win the division this year and sweep them next year – then I might mention a changing of the guard. Until then, they have the bragging rights.
As for the retarded Pats fan who came onto our website – he needs to get a life. He obviously has few friends or things to do. This year’s Super Bowl will shut him up.
Look who just broke #3 on NBC Power rankings…
http://powerrankings.nbcsports.com/
I don’t understand this concept of being outranked by a team that you just beat convincingly on the road. That’s why I count on NBC for The Office, Sunday Night Football, and absolutely nothing else.
People are giving Tennessee the benefit of the doubt for going 10-0 before Sunday.
I’m not complaining. Just four weeks ago, ESPN had the Jets #19. Not that these rankings mean anything, but climbing 16 spots in four weeks is pretty cool.
Most of the rankings out there (ie MMQB) have the Jets # 2.
Daniel in OK:
I was at the game last week and I was watching Favre and Clemens toss passes back and forth during warm-ups. Clemens was throwing tight spirals and Brett was throwing wobblers. I remember thinking, “Dang, is something wrong with him?” Obviously, though, Favre was throwing bullets in the game.
The only ranking that matters in 1st in the AFC east.
roof gets my vote for line of the day. Plus those women do have alot of freckles…LOL
thank you daniel. i was scrolling down to see if anyone would mention ratliff after this suddenly turned into a QB conversation. I would love to see more of him post-favre
Lets all calm down about the nice showing Ratliff had in the preseason. Does anyone remember how great Clemens looked last preseason?
Clemens played lights out last preseason and people were screaming for him to start over Chad. I am all for seeing more of Ratliff but how easy we forget the past??
I was just thinking….I have been a huge Mangini supporter the last 3 years so it feels really nice knowing he has grown to hate the Patriots and Belichick just as much as the fans.
side note:
Leon was just on espn’s first take. they were discussing what his nick-names should be, and the fans submitted their ideas. while leon was in the seat- skip bayliss says “well leon doesn’t deserve a nickname. they are still the new york bretts.”
is it just me or was that really disrespectful and wrong, seeing that leon was last years mvp and a lot of our success has been a direct result of his contributions?
The Pats are of no concern to this football team. We have arrived:
http://scotty-greene.blogspot.com/2008/11/you-gotta-believe-2008-ny-football-jets.html
See you in January!!
Skip Bayless to me, is someone who tries to get a a “rise” out of someone, anyone, everytime he speaks. Unfortunately that is the state of reporting today.
Favre will be back…. He loves the Jets and he loves the challenge!!!
Skip Bayless is an ueducated moron!!!
First of all he was last years mvp 2nd he is one of the main reasons why we win games
I’m more worried because he goes free agent this year and is going to want to get paid!!!
I am a believer in favre more than previously.
I think when he was in gb they wanted him out and with us we want him to stay and everyone likes to feel wanted so he will play another year. Love to hear weiss and crennell are on the hot seat i pray crennell gets fired and joins the staff. I HATE SUTTON!!!!!
It’s about time somebody attacked the Pats fans like that.
Leon is signed thru 2010.
check that…he is a free agent in 2010. signed thru 2009.
Don’t worry, Brett will totally screw you guys over in the playoffs. I can’t wait!
Until the Jets win the AFC East (which isn’t a done deal), let’s put this decade in perspective. The Dolphins won the AFC East in 2000. The Jets in 2002 (for only the second time since divisional play began)and the Pats the 6 other years. In those 6 years, the Pats made the Super Bowl 4 times and won 3 times. Pats fans have every right to believe that losing Brady was like the Bulls losing Michael Jordan and when Brady comes back, they’ll resume their dominance.
The only way that we as Jets fans can really rebut the Pats fan is for the Jets to win the Super Bowl. I see the foundation for a solid team, but the Jets do have some age, partcularly at the QB position. BB has built a pretty impressive machine up there and, IMO, the Jets are really not quite at their level as an organization.
But, the Jets have the better team this year and I really don’t care if idiot Pats fans don’t see what is obvious. However, as Jets fans, we have to be honest that this team still has a major long-term question at the QB position (and, please, no talk about Cassell). In the short-term, we have one of the top 5 QBs in the NFL and a team that appears to be getting better every week. Let’s enjoy the ride and not worry about the Chowdah-heads!
LISTEN We dont play the pats again unless in the playoffs why do we care what they do. Yeh ne is a top notch orginization but we are doing our own thing down here. Yeh we have Future qb question but I’m not looking that far ahead who knows who will be on the market or cap room. They knew what they were doing when they acquired favre and knew it was for 2 years not 1 so barring injury he will be back next year. Then we see
I pray crennell gets fired and joins the jet staff
If it was only the fans, I probably wouldn’t have responded but the Boston press offhandedly makes comments like I read yesterday. One of the Globe’s writers wrote that (the Patriots are) ‘a coin toss away from being 9-2.’ I realize that it’s not my job to hasten the declining prestige of the NE franchise but the wisest statement I have ever heard about a season is “you are what your record indicates.” If you’re 7-4, so be it. Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
I doubt any Patriots fans had sympathy for the Jets last year when they lost at least five games by a single score. In the same vein, how many Pats’ fans are sending novenas to San Diego for their two early season losses? In the first Pats game, at 6-3 in the third quarter Favre throws a back-breaker INT. Are the Jets 9-2 except for an errant throw? The fact is, the Patriots are 7-4 and currently out of the playoff picture. Pats fans should face it. Live with it and shut up.
Changing topics, is David Harris coming back this week? Also, I’m officially taking D’Brick off of my “bust” watch. I don’t believe he’s going to justify being taken with the No. 4 pick, but right now he’s as good as any LT the Jets have had for a long time, and I’m including Fabini, who was always over-rated. He had a great game against the Titans and his run blocking and speed are making him deadly on screens. Jets fans, it’s time to give D’Brick a break!
Sack
Harris will not be back this week but there’s a chance for next week. We’ll know more after practice tomorrow.
Fabini never played left tackle, did he? I thought he was a right tackle.
he played left and mckenzie played right
LOL, I couldn’t agree more!
I hope we don’t go after Cassel, I think we have our furture QB in Ratliff. He looked like he made major strides over the last year. If Favre plays one more season, I bet Brett will back up Brett.
Lol, a lot of these comments had me laughin ecspecially “if grandma had balls” lmao. But riddle me this…..to every idiot who keeps with the “if brady were playing” theme….if the man WAS playing this year..what would the pats record be right now? I say…”Probably the same damn record they have right now!” I’m gettin tired of hearing it. Last time I checked the pats have had no problem scoring this year, they still have the same weapons from last year “randy moss and co.” As a matter of fact, would I be crazy to say they probably wouldn’t even be that dybamic if it weren’t for cassel’s scrambling ability? Brady was always known for winning with the talented team the pats always had…the big numbers last year came from one obvious arrival of moss. I think its fair to say both quarterbacks are thriving of moss’ abilities. The obvious decline on the pats is their AGING defense, your guys are getting old….deal with it, tired of hearing the”if so and so was here, this wouldn’t have happened, the man quarterbacking your team is obviously capable of carrying out his duties, with that said…loosers make excuses and winners make it happen…does anybody here dispute that?

Here is my letter,
Dear Pats,
GO F$*k YOURSELVES.
D. Rose
This is a classic taunt. I love it. I say if Brett retires, give the damn ball to the other Brett (Ratliff).
While we are calling out Chowdah Heads, how about that Idiot Bob Ryan on Around the Horn speaking ill of the Jets. He is a f@#$ing joke and so are all of the NE fans who will not acknowledge that the Jets are truly a force in the NFL. I just hope that the Pats miss the playoffs on the last week of the season so that the offseason is nothing but pure agony. Also, I hope every team in Boston fails to make the post season for the next 10 years.
Go Jets!!!!!
In his first two seasons (98-99), Fabini was RT and Jumbo was LT. Then, for the 2000-2004 seasons, Fabini was an LT (5 seasons). In the 2005 season, Fabini was supposed to play LT. But, after the 2004 season, Harmway did not sign RT Kareem McKenzie. Then, in preseason, it was obvious that Fabini was not capable of being an LT, so he had to switch with Adrian Jones (McKenzie’s replacement at RT), who became the LT. When Mawae was injured and replaced by Kendall with Jonathan Goodwin in at LG, the Jets had arguably one of the worst OLs in franchise history. Even the Kotite era OL was better (virtually the same OL was 9-7 with Parcells). And, now we know that Brick is the best LT since Jumbo.
Fun facts: Jeff Criswell manned the LT position for 7 mostly awful years from 1988-1994 (he was a 2nd year guy who was cut by the Colts when he started). Before him, Chris Ward was the LT from his rookie season in ‘78 to ‘83 (6 seasons). Before Ward, Robert Woods started HIS rookie year ‘73-’76 (4 seasons). Before Woods, the other LT of note was Winston Hill, who was the starting LT from his rookie season through 1970 (8 seasons), when he was switched to RT. So, that’s a long way of saying that besides Hill (who should be in the HOF), the Jets have not exactlty had the best luck with LTs. Yet, the Jets play rookies and keep them around a long time. With this background, all Brick has to do is play better than a past-his-prime Jumbo to be arguably the second best LT in Jets history (I know Chris Ward has fans, especially if you like drive-killing holding penalties). Since Hill in 1970, no Jets LT has made the Pro Bowl. Yet another example of why this franchise hasn’t gotten back to the Super Bowl since ‘69!!!
Can we get some Jets-Broncos chatter going? A matchup of the once and future king (or gunslinger). Anyone know if Champ is going to play. I can’t imagine he would come back so soon after that type of groin injury. If Cutler lights us up early and we have a few drives stall, think Brett goes back to gun slinging? This is a dangerous game. Bronos are erratic, horrific defensively, BUT could expose our secondary big time. Another huge test for Mr. Lock Down, this time Brandon Marshall. But I have to assume he will answer the bell, since he always does. On the other hand, this will be nearly an impossible one on one cover for ty law if he is stuck on an island against the speedy eddie royal. Imagine Rhodes will be rolling over to give support for much of the game. Broncos center is small, maybe smallest in the league, if Jinx has a chance (depending on Broncos play calling) he could wreak havoc (not that that is especially new).
all you jets fans sound very cocky. the pats are still the best team in the afc. our offense is rolling at the right time. we will meet u guys in the play offs this time it will be a differnt story.
The Pats and their fans are a bunch of C_nts!!
bug off “the pats are still the best”….cuz they’re not
i think, unless we win it all this year, favre comes back for one more….then i like brett ratliff to take over..he showed me alot this preseason
no reason to trash talk this pats team, we’re both getting hot at the right time, and we barely edged them in an OT victory two weeks ago. I’m a big hater of the “we’re injured, so we WOULD have beaten you” argument because, well, every team gets injuries and the ones with better trainers/coaching/foresight avoid them and it’s part of the game, but it is worth noting that this Pats team is mirroring our in terms of getting into a groove. This is undoubtedly a dangerous team i would rather not see in the playoffs.
Until the Jets take this season deep in the playoffs, i’m leaving my trash talking hat on the table. I think we’re the better team right now, vegas would agree, but there’s not much more to say than that.
and secondly, 24-6 doesn’t mean anything if they go to the locker room at the half and can make adjustments that we are unable to respond to. terrible argument, AW, although i usually agree with your points
I dont think we Jets fan are cocky. Is that we sound like NE fans. And they can’t handle it.
After suffering as a Jets fan for most of the past 25 years I am just going to enjoy this season and hope for the best. I don’t care what the Patriots do, we beat them and a lot of their fans can not deal with it. Whatever. I hope we meet them again in the playoffs so there will be no doubt who is the better team this season.
Let’s also keep things in perspective. There is no guarantee that Tom Brady will be able to return and play at the level he played at previously. You can not compare Brady with Michael Jordan because he was not injured. My guess is that the Patriots will be forced to keep Cassel and probably have to use the franchise tag or give him a huge contract and tie up a ton of money in 2 QBs because if Brady does come back he will probably not be ready for the beginning of the season. The infection and second surgery pretty much guaranteed that. The Pats also do have an aging defense that probably can not be fixed in one season. The Pats are far from done but the rest of the division has closed the gap and their dominance is likely over.
If Favre leaves, the Jets should pick up Mike Vick.
[...] thejetsblog.com. Please read the complete article and let us know what you think [...]
If Woody had gone straight to the police this would never have happened!
Silly NE fans. Patriots barely beat KC, St. Louis and San Francisco. They are on the road 3 of the last 5, ending up in Buffalo.
When they lose this weekend to Pittsburgh it will all be over for them and they can cry in the Bahstin Hahbah.
And my Great-grandma and grandma both had bigger balls than Tom Brady. Probably still do.
I love how some NE fans use the injury excuse. Just a reminder that the last 2 weeks Cassell has thrown for over 400 yards. What.. would Brady have thrown for 600? NE fans are morons. Cry me a friekan river, and let me know when they finish the big dig.
Hey Patsy Fans, We got your number.
How do you like them apples?
Andrew:
Correction – Favre threw an interception just moments after completing a long bomb to Cotchery, which was inexplicably ruled as offensive pass interference, so the Jets could be 9-2 if it weren’t for a ludicrously bad piece of officiating.
Still, what would you expect from a league where Randy Moss can draw a defensive pass interference flag by shoving a defensive player in the back (see his third TD on Sunday) and a helmetted Todd Light can grab a linebacker by the hair and rain punches down on the back of his head without further repercussions?
To all of you sorry a$$ Jets fans.
Win three superbowls then start talking.
Better yet win one.
OK, then. Are we allowed to cheat?
You didn’t win the one wehere you didn’t cheat. That is so odd.
Why because we were doing what everyone else was doing. (including mangina)!!
Amazing, you idiots win a game against the Pats and you all talk sh@!.
End of last season you were all saying… wait a minute! I forgot the Jets sucked last season and the season before that …. before that and so on
The season before last we beat you guys in Foxborough. Not everyone was taping games. Others did acceptable actions. Plus the Pats get all of the calls in their favor. Some of them are mind boggling. So you guys are the last team that can complain about anything. You are good for business and the NFL treats you according to that. Before Parcells were there Pats fans? I never saw them at Jets games. The Patriots have had a good decade. The rest of your history is a joke.
Oh and even if we were worse than the Lions I will always say the Pats, Brady, Bellicheck, and all of New England suck. You were just looking in the wrong place for smack talk. Plus how pathetic do you have to be to go to another teams blog and anonymously talk smack. Grow a pair buddy.
hey patriots fans, suffer
