Dre Bly Confirms He’s a Soccer Player Playing Football

Newsflash, Dre Bly is a punk.

I watched him fall down and pull a soccer style faux injury Sunday, which he all but admitted to yesterday.

“Just a bruise on my shin,” Bly told the Rocky Mountain News of his injury. “You know Brett, him being a savvy vet, when he sees somebody down, he likes to do a no-huddle, catch a defense off balance. I knew that, so I just laid on the ground and let the pain go away. . . . But that’s one thing you have to do - you have injuries, anything that’s bothering you, stay on the ground, don’t try to be Superman and rush back up because it can hurt your defense.”

I don’t think it would have changed the outcome of the game either way, and objectively you can laud it as a “savvy” strategy, but it’s pretty much a counter-cultural one to what football is all about.

It also confirms that Dre Bly would do better crossing the pond and joining these guys.

  1. Great post… I think a lot of people will feel comforted that they weren’t going crazy by thinking they were faking injuries. Bunch of panzies

  2. thats just not football….it really is a shame

and i am sure the NFL will do nothing about it

  3. it certainly did have an impact on the game. I was there freezing my butt off and every time we had any momentum they flopped on the ground. They did it on EVERY play one drive. Shannahan’s a douche

  4. Wow what a bitch move by bly… but what do u expect they kept our momentum to a minimum and it worked out for them… this loss was the best thing that coudlve happend to us… were going to win out now I don’t think mangini is gonna let them take there foot off the gas from here on out and I see a healthy work load for tj and leon going forward…

  5. Smart football, but very, very lame. This happened to us in a close game in high school. The receiver went down with no timeouts and 15 seconds left after a long play getting them down to our 20 yard line. They called an injury timeout with 7 seconds left, which allowed them to lineup and spike the ball.

Free play. Can’t say I wouldn’t coach it if it allowed us to have another shot at the endzone. It definitely screwed up the JETS’ rythm too.

How do you penalize that though? The ref pretends to know who is actually hurt? I hope this doesn’t become a trend simply b/c it worked in this game!

  6. There better be a healthy workload for TJ and Leon going forward because when they touch the ball, good things have been happening. Leon was very effective on his numerous screen plays Sunday and TJ was gashing the D-line left and right. There is no need to be fancy every time, here and there is fine, but in pressure spots they lean more on gimmicks than smash-it-down your throat. It’s like they don’t have confidence in our O-line, and I don’t see how thats warranted.

  7. It is a hard thing to penalize because there are so many legit injuries in football its hard to differentiate. But if you go down and cause an injury-time out, there should be a minimum amount of time or plays you have to sit out before returning. If you can return right away, then I’m sure you can make it off the field in time before causing a timeout.

It’d be too hard to penalize in yardage, but you should penalize the player playing time. If he wants to play, he better be sure to get off the field in time, if he can’t, then he’s probably too hurt to play right away anyways.

  8. if you go down with an injury the player should be required to sit out the remainder of the series and the next series as well…plain and simple

  9. Ed L, that is a solid solution!

  10. Every injured player must sit out the rest of that entire series. The 1 play rule is so silly.

  11. I thoguht the Jets were going to play smash mouth football on Sunday and they didn’t. And it all stopped when Cotchery dropped the reverse hand off.

-At least to the next first down.

-Does anyone have a replay of the Broncos player going down and when they go down? Is it after Brett Favre goes no-huddle or does Brett Favre goes no huddle after he sees the player go down?

  12. the chicken came first Jose…

Anyone going to the game in San Fran? Looking to get tix and kinda wanted to be near some JETS fans. If so where you gonna be at?

  13. I think the only way the rule can be edited is to make an exception for a QB. If a QB goes out for a play after an injury, but isn’t allowed back to the next set of downs, that’s obviously a much bigger detriment than rotating safties or linemen.

It’s a tough rule for the NFL to enforce, because it would mean making another rule that has a separate set of circumstances for QBs.

Also, I konw the refs get a lot of heat. But, this is a situation that would be really hard for the refs to monitor all the time. Especially if one or two players goes down, they have to keep track of so much as it is, the only way to do this would be to have an extra referee off the field, from a booth keeping track of such things.

This gets me back to another irritaint. Why are reviews done on the field, how little sense does this make. The NHL and MLB have a replay judge set up in the home office to watch all the possible angles and make the decisions, why couldn’t the NFL set up the same system - wouldn’t that be faster, more efficient, and more logical?

  14. Chrebookie…

    Jets vs. San Fran

    I’ll be there.

    Lower Level Section 33

  15. thats where i was looking to get tix. been looking online

  16. A truly dissapointing loss but what a wakeup call to a team that maybe started to rest on their laurels…I expect all the Jets to be firing on all cylinders out in SanFran this Sunday! SanFran will be tough…but this will be a statement game for the Jets offense, defense, and special teams! GO JETS!!! 9-4!!!

  17. So let me get this straight…Bly should just get up and play the next play with with pain in his shin, probably limited in his speed/agility, and have Farve throw a pass to his side resulting in a big play? Great idea! The Jets need to stop looking for excuses and realize they got beat by a better team.

  18. Wow Scott — obviously a Bronco fan there. As far as I’m concerned, football is a man’s game — not a game where you fake injury to gain advantage for your team. If your Bronc-ettes want to keep doing that I guess it’s fine — but don’t insult our intelligence by saying that Bly really had an injury. He was down on the field for 5 minutes — usually players just hop to the sideline. It was clearly done in order to break momentum and give his defense a free timeout. Funny, I don’t remember any injuries happening when the Jets had a bad play on offense.

  19. Football is a man’s game and the Broncos manhandled the Jets with 6 rookies. I’ll give you Bly’s injury b/c he’s a punk that know one really likes. However, you ever been hit in the shin playing football? I don’t care if you have pair of nunts or not, that hurts. My complaint is all I’m hearing is, “Give credit to the Broncos, but….”, “the officiating was horrible”, “the broncos faked injuries” Wa … Wa … Wa.

  20. hey scott ever foul a 90 mph fastball off your shin with a metal bat? and then stay in the box and finish your at bat and run out a hit? yea it aint that hard tell your puss ass team to man up….if he cant run with a little pain in his shin then he is in the wrong line of work….tell him to go play women’s soccer….oh no wait…i think they are tougher then him…

i just wish i knew who’s puss is looser yours or his?

  21. Scott is a douche just like Shameahan. Denver is the best of the worst division in football hoo fing rah!

  22. i say let them fake injuries. as you all know, karma’s a b****

  23. The refs should have discretion to give a 5 yd delay penalty if a team has more than 2 injuries in a series or something like that. In an obvious delay play like the Broncos. Players should have to take off more than one play too. There should be a rule change if this becomes a tactic.

  24. ED L,

Yeah I have but the pitcher didn’t go into a hurry up windup and force me to jump right back up and swing. Your analogy is retarded. Looks like the Jets Defense puss in loosest having a rookie fullback run in, out, and around those gapping holes.

    James in TN,

Don’t be mad that your Team is 1-3 should be 0-4 vs. what you call “the worst division” in football….douche.

  25. I hope we get to play the Broncos again in the playoffs. After that Cotchery fumble, this game spiraled out of control. I have no doubts that we would beat them come playoff time.
Scott, your fanbase is a joke. This is thejetsblog.com, you spend your time trolling the internet looking for a team that you guys played last week to bash their opinions? Creeps like you are the reason why the next time the Broncos come to Jersey, you’ll see the yellow jackets running frantically to your fellow fans aide.

  26. Bly sure runs a nice deep route. Bretthole hit him in stride.
