Link: Wakey Wakey …
Erik Boland wrote about Laveranues Coles’ thoughts on Sunday’s loss to the Broncos and what it should mean to this team.
“I’ll tell you what, it’s a wakeup call,” said receiver Laveranues Coles, who had only two receptions Sunday – one for 4 yards, one for no gain. “Any time you get in a situation like this where you lose a ballgame, you’re all hurting.”
Coles cited the end of the Jets’ five-game winning streak as reason for everyone to look inward.
“From top to bottom, again, the coaches are going to take a look at themselves and what they’re doing. The players need to take a look at what they’ve been doing and the approach they’ve been taking into the ballgame,” Coles said.
Coles isn’t a captain this year, but it’s clear why he’s respected as a leader of this team. No excuses for the team’s play from him.
Good teams respond well to adversity and take it out on their next opponent. Now it’s time for the Jets to make the next team suffer for their own shortcomings.

Wasn’t the Oakland game a wake up call????
They were on a roll, and now maybe realize that they can’t just show up and win. They’re not THAT good. Or the competition’s too good for that. Any given Sunday. They should respond well this week. I would be shocked if they didn’t.

Enough with the negativity. They stunk on Sunday. Get over it. They’re still a good team that most of us have confidence in. I think with the wins over New England and Tennessee, they’ve earned a pass for one stinker. As long as they’re back to normal against San Francisco, everyone needs to chill out.
You nailed it, Paul. They did win 7 out of 9, beating some good teams in that stretch. I am sure this will light a fire under their asses!!
Go Jets
How good is the SF offense? Is it too early in the week to ask for rankings, Bassett?
I dont think they need a wake up call. The first time they get hit in a game should be their wake up call. Or even before the game. They made mistakes, Its probably their first game i nthe rain this year w/ Favre.
I agree with TC–Oakland, and even the KC game, should have been enough wake-up calls. Professional athletes still need wake-up calls after 11 games? Enough with the excuses–just go out on the field and do it.
So much of this are the schemes from the coaches. Sutton and shotty are amateurs and just plain horrible. This will keep happening with them coaching.
Everybody relax. they will be fine. So any players already said they took last week easy and they weren’t ready for this game. better now then 4 weeeks from now. They will respond witha very good game this week. Scratch 07 in 06 they were 7-5 and coming home to play the Bills after blowing out the Packers in Green Bay. They were flat and lost 31-13. They responded with 3 straight wins. @ Minny and Miami and home vs the Raiders. The Jets will win out finish 12-4 and just maybe finish with the # 2 seed if the Steelersdrop 2 out of their last 4. It could happen.
Joe B,
How was my comment negative? Didn’t the team say that the oakland game was a wake up call as well as the media??
I want the Jet’s to WIN every game!!!!!!!!
Your playing for division title and seeding in the playoff’s,Isn’t that enough of a motivating factor?

Just take a breath. They played lousy and Denver is hot and cold. Everyone mentions how the Broncos lost to the Raiders, but they also beat Atlanta on the road. Do the Falcons suck? The Jets are bound to have off games. I was as disappointed as anyone with the performance, but they deserve some slack from the five-game win streak. Again, chill out. It was one game. If they’re not better against San Francisco, I’ll join you in your concern, but until then, try to have some perspective. This also isn’t only directed at you but at every Jet fan going nuts over this loss.
I believed in these guys after the San Diego loss when many didn’t, and it paid off until this past Sunday. I still believe in them, and I think it’ll pay off again. PATIENCE.
Joe B,
I’m perfectly fine.Just making a statement.I hope this was only a blip on the radar and they run the table!!
This game aginst S.F. I think will determine alot…….The S.F. defense under singletary is pretty good and there cb’s ain’t to bad either……..
And me like you have seen alot of negative stuff here. And I remember after the Pat’s game posting “IT’S A SEASON not just 1 game”
Ok so here we are,4 game’s left GET IT DONE!!!!!!
I just want to see them committ to the run if its the other teams weakness. It was suppose to be Denver’s weakness and we didnt exploit it. We need to have the kiiler instinct when it comes to the other teams’ weaknesses.
Was LC awake for this game?? What a poor showing by LC in this game
The JETS need another offensive weapon and it is time to turn David Clowney loose on the NFL.
The JETS need a deep threat and he is the answer. Why he hasn’t been playing is a mystery to me.
But I guess Schott knows what he is doing. Or does he??
I would like to see Clowney in there as well. He fills a need for pure speed.
It was an off week, and the test will be to see how they rebound this week. How they respond to adversity.
Jas, you hit the nail on the head, Shotty needs to go. I know I might be in the vast minority on this one but, come on Shottenheimer! What the hell man! The game plan should have been, run all over these guys. The Broncos run defense is god awful, and we are running reverses and throwing the ball around in the rain. Give the ball to TJ and Leon and stuff it down there throats.
Pass rush has to come back from the dead this week. Unfortunately, the Jets faced the 1st- and 3rd-ranked pass protection lines in the league the past two weeks. The 49ers are 31st. Only the Lions are worse at protecting their quarterback. With a weaker offensive line and less dangerous receivers to face (though Vernon Davis scares me), I think we’ll see the Jets getting burned way fewer times than last week.
Wake-up call my @$$…they had a poor game plan and took the week off leading up to the game and it showed…KC and Oakland were wake-up calls…they were out prepared, outcoached and outplayed.
NickyLibs,
We should’ve ran the ball down their throats, I agree. Sometimes it doesn’t need to be that fancy. Just line it up and run. The Brad Smith and JC fumble wasn’t a great call in the rain. I would’ve much rather established the run at that point. I’m not big on reverses anyway. Look what happened the next possesion, TJ 59 yard td.
NickyLibs -
The vast minority? I think just about every poster on this site (save for Hank and Fonzie) has called for Schotty’s head at least once.
You’d think Lav Coles was a bum and David Clowney was the second coming of Keyshawn Johnson.
YAC is more important than deep threat any day of the week and Laveraneous and Jerricho are really good at YAC.
Oakland was a wake up call and the Jets reeled off 5 wins. If the Broncos loss is a second wake up call and the Jets reel off 4 wins, then they win the AFC East for only the 3rd time in franchise history. Let’s face it, this team and coaching staff have to learn to be consistent winners in the NFL. The Jets are real close to being a legitimate Super Bowl contender, let’s hope that this loss is a springboard, not an anvil.
Without dissing LC or Jericho, I still think the Jets need a deep threat to give Brett a full complement of offensive weapons. Keyshawn and Chrebet were YAC gods, but Parcells had Dedric Ward to come in so Vinny could air it out in ‘98. Nobody thought Ward was better, but he filled a need. When you have a QB with a cannon, you have to let him air it out to keep the defense honest or you’ll face 8 men in the box and three deep, like the Broncos were playing.
everyone…bet the FARM – the jets will make the niners pay….they will win..HUGE this week
Clowney would’ve caught that long into by Brett I think. We need someone with pure speed to open up the defense. At least we will have a chance in thirdand long (15).
I agree, Clowney’s just another option, but one that should be utilized. He would not be in place of JC or LC.
Joe B:
Most ” experts ” picked the Jets to go 9-7, I think thin vegas over and under was 7.5 wins. We are 8-4 soon to be better than what the experts predicted. Who do you think deserves the credit, lets see……..Oh, I know only farve Farve.
PS. I belive we are either one or two in points scored. Not bad for a retarded OC that should be fired, eh?
Hank -
How about spreading credit and blame around? Ever consider doing that? I don’t award sole credit or blame to anyone.
This is just a test
Joe B:
Trust me I don’t either. I just can’t stand “fans ” (and the media) that idolize this guy when we win and it’s ” terible, ugly play calling ” and “fire the coaches ” when we lose.
sutton must go
Joe B:
Ps. I haven’t seen one comment on the s__t game that Farve had Sunday. Can’t blame it all on the weather because Cutler was pretty good, wasn’t he? It is all on Shotty, NONE on the QB.
Bob Sutton is by far the worst d coordinator in the league how does this bum still have a job
Does anyone else realize this or is it just me
My posts are not showing up
I just wrote a long disertation on how the Jets need to hire a Steeler defense assistant
This is impossible, my posts won’t post
Why didn’t they keep Paul Raymond?
I just realized why it won’t post, I keep refering to Pittsburgh’s D coordinator Richard Lebeau, I’ve been using his nick name D_ck Lebeau, it the site is taking it as an obsenity.
The Jets and Steelers run similiar versions of the 3-4 defense, with varying results, the biggest difference is D_ck Lebeau. He is a master at calling the right blitz package at the right time, he keeps an offense off balance and out of rythum. We (the Jets) should identify one of his top assistants, one who has been with him a while and really understands what he does and why he does it. We should then hire this Steeler assistant for our D coordinator, because Sutton just isn’t cutting it.
hank/naples, Favre was 23/43 for 247 0 TDs and an INT. Cutler was 27/43 for 357 2 TDs and an INT. The difference was that Favre was throwing against Denver’s prepared defense and Cutler was picking apart the Jets’ unprepared defense. Maybe Cutler has better weapons with Marshall, Royal, Stokely, Scheffler and Graham? Also, maybe his OL is better? This team was not built for the quick strike of a strong armed QB, but Denver has been since Elway first trotted on the field. So, I know it’s hard for you, but maybe Favre did the best he could with what he had under the conditions.
Blame or credit won’t help us win the next games – recommitting to the run on offense and an improved pass rush on defense will.
We have an OL full of first round talent, are averaging close to 5 yds/carry, yet we pass 15% more than we run. Why?
On D, we will be seeing teams spread it out against us the rest of the year. If we don’t show some different looks we’ll be in trouble. Cutler knew what was coming every down. We aren’t stopping anyone rushing 3/4 and going to a pseudo prevent. Release the hounds!
In the absence of a FULL commitment to a pass rushing style of D, this team is good enough to make the playoffs, but not good enough to go much further. Why Sutton is still here is a mystery to me. Even last year at 4-12, they appeared to commit to a more agressive D after the bye (for the 2nd year in a row) and played much better down the stretch. Shottenhiemer this has the stats to back up his role, but I would not be sad to see him leave as well.
Sack99,
You said it right in another post, the Jets have just gone 7-2 of the last nine. How are people not satisified? A resaonable person would realize that favre has played the last 16 years in the same offense, and now comes to a new team, how can there not be growing pains. A lesser QB might not have done as well.
You will never get Hank/ Fonzie (they are the same person) to believe that the Favre trade was a good thing.
Sackdance99:
I really can’t tell you which team was/is better. I can tell you that Cutler flat outperformed Farve, no if’s and’s or but’s. He’s 2 TDs guarenteed the win and his 8.3 yds per pass beat Farves 5.4. Again, the problem here is Farve is great when we win , bad game plan fire the coaches when we lose. It’s almost as if the heavens would open up and lightning would strike anyone that blames Farve for anything.
I try to avoid blaming coaches for wrong calls on individual plays. They have a better insight on what the team and players can do. But they should always take the blame for a loss especially if it is lopsided. Individual players are not involved in every play. Great individual performances or one game-changing play can be the deciding factor in close games. Getting blown out by a team with fewer talented players is the coaches’ fault. Coaches have control of the team before every play. If Brett Farve or the defense play badly, then the coaches should find another way to win. There is enough talent on the Jets to win every game. Eric Mangini deservedly got the credit two years ago for the winning season and was reaping praises again during the 5-game winning streak. I still believe he can get the team deep into the playoffs but with these Jets anything can happen. (I’d be surprised if Norv Turner is the still the Chargers coach next year).
hank/naples, I guess that I just don’t understand the “this QB outperformed the opposing QB” argument. This isn’t basketball where Favre and Cutler battled each other. They’re on different teams and faced different defenses. Cutler played well and won. But, your theory is that Favre played poorly and I just don’t think that’s the case. Heck, Cutler even had the worse INT, but his INT resulted in a FG and Favre’s, which pinned the Broncos on their own 32, resulted in a TD. The Broncos won for a multitude of reasons, but one of them was not because Favre didn’t play well. And, while you’re drinking the Haterade against Favre, how about Jericho’s fumble and failure to make that crucial catch? The Jets WRs didn’t exactly distinguish themselves against a poor Broncos defense without Champ Bailey.
I thought the playcalling by Schott regressed and he got too cute again by straying from the formula that had resulted in 3 crucial AFC road victories. The gadget play by Smith and the two passes to try to get a yard were a throwback to the Raiders game as was the passive defense of sending 5-6 men in coverage (which hasn’t seemed to work since the Miami game and just barely there). But, if the Jets win the next 4 games, they win the AFC East for only the 3rd time and tie for the best franchise regular season record. If Favre gets 10 TD passes in these last 4 games, he sets the Jets TD record. So, while I lived through 1986, which was the last time the Jets were the AFC’s best team and collapsed, I’m still optimistic about this team which I think is the best in the AFC.
Play calling was bad. Favre didn’t execute it great though. Coaching and execution lost that game. Secondary was horrible, yet I still thought we had a chance and it was the first time in my life that an opponent was in our red zone and I had confidence we could hold them.
