Film Room: Favre Presser 12/3/2008

Favre spoke today to the press, all whilst wearing his hat in a goofy manner, about last weekend’s loss and preparing for the Niners this weekend out on the west coast.

Interesting to hear him say that he here “as long as they want me.’ No disrespect meant, but that seems to be one of those Favre throwaway statements, not a full out statement about how long he’ll be in New York.  Even so, the press might overanalyze it tomorrow in the paper. We’ll see …

  1. the whole favre in NY for_________ year(s) deal has me feeling anxious about the year we are in right now. I feel that if we don’t go anywhere THIS year, it’s going to be quite a while til we experience some great success. I’m not so sure we’ll get the type of schedule we have ths year again, nor will clemens be capable of anything crazy in my mind. I’m hopin for 2 years out of the old man…too much to ask?

  2. eddie, i dont agree with you.

we have a young WR – Cotchery
An up and coming TE- Keller
And we have Leon who can do everything

A young O line with Mangold and ferguson
DE – Pace is still young and u never know about gholston
LB – Harris is a stud
CB – Revis is a top 5 corner and not in his prime yet
    Lowrey can be something
As well as Rhodes at Safety.

This is not including Clemens or Ratliff at QB.

    I think we’ve built a solid core

  3. You never know with Brett, but his close friends believe that he could play for another year or two. Even his old coach said that he was genetically gifted when reporters would ask about his health and his arm strength in GB. I think if the Jets continue to treat him so well and they get to the playoffs, it’s possible. If they tank, he will probably be gone and the Jet fans may want him to go. He is incredibly insecure for a superstar. He still wonders if the Jets will want him back–even if he plays well.

  4. Look at his face.

That is why he wearing his hat in a goofy way. He doesnt care he just wants to cry to the media. HE S-U-C-K-S SUCKS!!!!!

EVERYBODY RESPECTS HIM BUT I DONT!!!!!

NEW YORK SHOULD HAVE NEVER WELCOMED HIM!!!

    WE DONT NEED HIS CIRCUS!!!!!

    WE DONT NEED HIM! PERIOD!!!!!

  5. Ronnie,

we had those players before THE DEADLY DISEASE came. We are building this team IN SPITE of him. Ratliff will beat out clemens and be the new quarterback. If we lose in the first round of the playoffs this year then FARVE is gone. If we lose in the second round FARVE is gone. Anything above that he may wait a while (Please Lord I hope not).

  6. He has brought nothing new to the team than what Chad has already done. He hasn’t even secured a playoff spot yet. Geez!!! I want to see how far HE with all his talents brings us.

  7. So let me get this straight. You’re rooting against the Jets to advance to the conference championship or beyond just for the possibility of Favre leaving after this season.

If so, I think most would agree that you’re the disgusting one.

I hated the Favre trade, but he’s performed admirably, if not perfectly this season. He, along with Leon and Keller were responsible for one of the biggest wins in Jet history (over the Pats).

You don’t like Favre. Great. I don’t love the guy either. But get the f**k over it or go be a fan of some other team. Honestly. You won’t be missed.

  8. Seriously, Fonz. Take some medication. You’re complaining because we don’t have a playoff spot clinched? Were you alive for last year?? I absolutely loved the Favre trade. I was a huge Chad fan, but he had a lot of emotional baggage built up and it was time for a change. The guys in the huddle during the NE game even said that Favre made all the difference not for the physical, but the mental. He might be insecure in the interview room, but he sure has built a lot of cred in about 3 months with the team it appears. Put down the crack pipe and enjoy 8-4, our win total has doubled b/c of offseason moves made (including Favre) and the team is winning with his help and leadership.

  9. Also, I might add about Favre in the interview room…if you’ve ever spent time around an organization (business or otherwise) with a lot of expectations, its all about managing expectations. Underpromise and overdeliver. If you don’t think Favre has learned how to play this game, you’re really a dumb-a**. The guy knows his shortcomings, and also probably acts a certain way to the press corps than he does with his teammates. On purpose, I might add.

  10. Hey Fonz,
Where ya been?? Noticed you haven posted to much during the winning streak,Oooop’s I forgot they lost so it’s back to Favre Bashing…………
    Your to funny!!

  11. Joe B:

The point is that with all the glory and prowerss he has been anointed by the Jet fans AND media we will not know untill the last game of the season if we’ll even make the playoffs.
Also he has performed admirably? For a HOF QB?, for the greatest QB ever? for a guy that was given the Key to the city by our suck-up mayor? by our lord and savior who would show us the way to the promise land while making possibly $ 25 million by next year?
(think is more money than Chad made in his seven painfull years with the Jets)
As I mentioned before, the fact of this whole fiasco is he does AND will get all the credit in the world when we win and none, zero, zilch, zippo of the blame when we lose.
And this charade about being modest, and even insure, the team not wanting back is plain BS. He wasn’t very insecure when he forced the team, the city he adores and even the commissioner when he wanted to play one more year.

  12. I realise this wasn’t the main point of your post, but Chad earned plenty more than $25 in his seven years at the Jets:

In his first four seasons he would have been bound by the restrictions of the rookie payscale, but still probably earned between $5m and $10m.

He then signed a seven year deal for $64m. Unfortunately, he only lasted four years, but $23m of the money was guaranteed, including a $16m signing bonus.

After two years, the deal was restructured so that much of it was incentive based, but in 2006, he met most of these incentives so earned all the salary he would have had anyway for that year.

Broadly, I would estimate his total earnings from the Jets to be somewhere in the region of $50m.

Oh, and Fonzie…that was my favorite post of all time. Bravo.

  13. Fonz/Fonzie/Naples whatever …

Both the ice and my patience are starting to get thin …

As you know, we have to become Sherlock Holmes with a team of lawyers to find straight forward info on NFL player contracts but, I was able to find some and here goes:

    1) Having been drafted # 18 in 2000 I haven’t been able to find his rookie contract but I did find Tim Couch #1 overall 1999 draft, Heisman winner, signed for 7yr / $14.5 million.

2)In 2004 Pennington re-signed an extension through 2011 for $64 million contract with only $23 million guaranteed

3)In 2006 Chad then re-structured that contract to receive $3 million guaranteed with $6 million in incentives.

    4) In 2007 Chad received slightly more than $4 million for the year and last, as we all know, he signed 2yr/$11.5 million contract with Miami.

Bent, like I said, it is hard, but if you do the math and consider that it is HIGHLY unlikely that Pennington received ANY if the incentive $ or bonus $ becaude of all his “down” time (down as in sideline observer) his total salary with the Jets Pennington did not actually earn more than $ 25 million for his painfull stay with the Jets.

  16. My information was accurate and correct. Chad earned about $50m with the Jets.

  17. Bent:

Ok, well and good, let me know where I can see this accurate and correct info because I canvased most NFL official web sites and I can’t find anything to substantiate you argument. PLEASE!

  18. No problem, the salary cap is complex and I don’t mean that in a condescending way.

Your interpretation was wrong because of two main misconceptions.

    1. You cannot reduce the amount of guaranteed money in a contract when you restructure it. This is illegal in the collective bargaining agreement. So, that $23m of guarantees was definitely received by Chad (as previously stated $16m of this was a signing bonus. When he restructured, the $3m of guarantees was from that point on and couldn’t be less than what he was due to receive anyway.

    2. You state that he probably didn’t earn any of these incentives. This is inaccurate because most of them would be for things like lasting the whole season without going on injured reserve, starting every game, making the playoffs. The Jets structured it this way so that they were NLTBE (not likely to be earned) incentives, which means they hit the following year’s cap if attained. In 2006, he met every one. In 2007, he missed a few. Remember the contract was not highly incentivized until after 2005, so he would have earned his salary in each of those first 5 years with the team and met the incentives to earn all the money he would have been due in year six.

Most of the sources I use only report on current deals, so I am using my own records to substantiate this, but – crudely, Chad earned about (say) $8m in years 1-4, then got a signing bonus of $16m, would have earned his salary in 2004, 2005 and his incentives for 2006 at around $6m per year, plus another $4m in bonuses and about $3m in reduced salary in 2007. These are approximate figures, but I make that $49m.

Not sure what this proves, but just wanted to reassure you that I’m not blowing smoke!

  19. Bent:

I’m not quite sure I can navigate thru this BUT, It was a mouthfull. I will get back to you as soon as I digest it.

  20. Here’s some more info:

Pennington’s rookie deal was for five years and up to $23m with a $4.1m signing bonus. It was highly incentive laden, so he would only have met those incentives in 2002 and some of them in 2003 (but would have received a basic salary in those years. Obviously year 5 became year one of the new contract. It would appear on this basis that the $8m I used in my crude analysis above is probably overly prudent. Probably closer to $12m, maybe more.

For 2007, I said above that he received about $4m in bonuses and about $3m in reduced salary for 2007. I now found out that he received $2m in salary and $2m in bonuses for that year and the other $2m of bonuses must have been a roster bonus in an earlier year. So I was, I think, $1m out on that year.

  21. Bent:

The term guaranteed is self explanatory, however you must keep in mind that Pennington started in less than half of all his games in the first five years with the Jets. That said, I find it very hard to believe that he earned more than half of the incentive and bonus money. If you count all the guarentee $ per year earned, and half of the Bonus, he still doesnot make anywhere near $50 million.

  22. You are ignoring one key component: salary. In the years he was injured, Chad still would have received a salary.

    One last try…

Years 1-4: Contract – 5 years, 23m of which 4m = signing bonus and approximately 4m per year in salary/incentives.

    Signing bonus – 4m
    4 years of salary – 2m
    2002 incentives – 4m
    2003 incentives – 2m

    Total 12m

Years 5, 6, 7 and 8: Contract – 7 years, 64m of which 16m = signing bonus and approximately 7m per year in salary/incentives (which only became highly incentive laden when he restructured after the first two years.

    Signing bonus – 16m
    Year 5 – salary/assume incentives met – 7m
    Year 6 – salary/assume some incentives missed – 5m
    Year 7 – salary/assume incentives met – 7m
    Year 8 – salary/roster bonus – 4m

    Total – 39m
Add the 12m from years 1-4 and you get $51m.

Year 5 and 7 he only missed a total of 3 starts and the team made the playoffs so it is reasonable to assume incentives were met. Year 6, he may not have met the incentives, but remember that the deal was only restructured to be more incentive based AFTER that year.

I believe the above is conservative and proves conclusively my original comment that Chad earned closer to $50m than $25m in his seven years with the Jets.

  23. No no not possible let me see that again. Haha jk
