Opinion: God That Was Awful
I just got done watching that game and was just appalled at how poorly we looked. I don’t know when we became so timid, but we are playing not to lose instead of playing to win:
1. Our WR’s cannot get separation.
Where is Clowney? He was the one WR who had the speed to get down the field.
2. Our defense gets no pressure
-Our blitz packages were poor. Lowery missed one golden opportunity, but otherwise there was very little pressure on the QB.
3. We make no adjustments
They ran the same WR bunch formation over and over again. Not once did we look like we had a clue.
4. Our secondary is terrible. Why are we constantly playing 7-8 yards off the LOS. Receivers are running wild on us.
The Double back route by Bruce was well executed.
Why did we sign Law if he is not going to be physical at the LOS?
I expect Mangini to take the gloves off. I am so sick of hearing the consistent approach. It’s about time I hear some fire and brimstone from Mangini, or I will be ready for him to go.

1) the leon washington kick return for a td which was called back
2) the 4th and 1 that they got jenkins to go offsides. If we were able to stop them, this game wouldve been ours.

Mangini set the tone of the game himself by not going for it on 4th and 2 four plays into the game on the SF 37. If he was playing to win, he would’ve gone for it and made a statement.
SF was clearly more aggressive in all aspects of the game starting with the onside kick to start it.
Ho did we go from thinking about the 2 seed to not making the playoffs? Same old Jets. I’m so disappointed. Why do I let myself become so hopeful of having a playoff run. You can say we were 2 plays away from a win, but when you play a team like the 49ers you need to win by 2 TD’s if your going to be a contender.
Correct about Manginious….SHOW A LITTLE FIRE AND LITE IT UNDER SOMEONE’S ASS…Football is an emotional game and that has to start at the top…not everyone is Belichek, or has a Tom Brady.

Now every game is not going our way. Phins win, Pats come back and win and now the Steelers just scored on an INt. return.
Can the three man rush. It’s not working; it never has. No pressure. Makes rookie and journeyman QBs look like Unitas. Leaves secondary hung out to dry.

This team, this organization is a joke. As long as this team continues to share a stadium with the Giants they will never ever win. I am convinced. Special teams used to be a big part of the game and today we had penalties that killed a 99 yd return.

Start focusing on the draft guys! No better than 9-7 (maybe). Sign Boldin as a FA for WR and draft DBs and DLs. See if the girl scouts would trade some cookies for Gohlston. Beg some other teams to lure Sutton and Shott away from us for 8th round picks (oops, there are only 7 rounds in the draft!)

This is the typical Jets season. It’s like a rollercoaster, and the only sure things is that we are not going to win a Superbowl. I was surprised by the 5 game winning streak and was cautious about their success. The real NY Jets team showed up the last couple of weeks. does anyone else realize that thomas jones only ran the ball ten times? and he didnt run the ball once the entire second half..and he had a 5.6 yrd avg..the play calling was the worst ive ever seen it..on both sides of the ball..its amazing to me that jones rips off a nice 17 yrd td run and then we dont give the ball back to him??? what i saw today was disguisting and something drastic needs to happen with the coaching staff

I think Sutton and Schott are the weak links here, not Mangini. On defense there was never anyone near the guy with the ball, i just dont get it. The offense was so predictable from play number 1!! What a disgrace!!

How the F do you beat the Pats and the Titans on the road, and then lose to two lesser teams. Our defensive backfield has sucked all year, and our offense has zero consistancy. We sucked every which way today. Why can’t Mangini have the balls in his post game to get pissed off and come out and say that. Sutton also blows. He has got to go next year. I have no faith in the rest of this year.

I have been wondering this since opening day ‘07 (I exempt ‘06 since I was not in country at the time). But yeah…every loss seems like a “Ho-hum, well, there’s always next week” sort of deal. How in the hell do you get your team to play for you if you don’t even remotely appear to care about the outcome of the game?!
OH…and…the lateral on the kickoff when it was still a game…. WOW…gotta hear if that was an “option” for smith to do it…..or was it “if they kick to you that is the play we are gonna run”…
either way……it kiiiinda sucked.
thomas jones 10 carries in a game that was 14-14 with 5 min left in the third.
While we may still be in it, I do not see the JETS doing anything in the Play-offs..

This was an awful performance. There are still three games left and this Jets team could still make the playoffs. But what is the advantage of backing into the playoffs and going one and done? That would mean Mandiculous would stay as coach and we would get a lesser pick in the first round. Better to lose out, have Mangini fired and get a better pick. Remember at the end of this year we probably have no starting calibur quarterback on the roster.

No pressure up front secondary wasn’t even at the game and seriously we cannot expect Eric Barton to make all the tackles! as a personal note i think the ref’s were paid off to call all of those penalties especially the one that Leon Washington ran 99 yards.

If anyone should be whining about not having his number called more often, IT SHOULD BE THOMAS JONES. TJ has CARRIED the Jets this year, and he gets TEN RUSHES today?! Why the hell is Schottenheimer so afraid to run the ball?
Also, where the flip is Kerry Rhodes? The only time I ever see him, he’s either two seconds late to a play or stomping around because the secondary gave up a big play. Our secondary is lousy with Revis playing well, today we saw how terrible they are when Hell Relle has an off day. Scary.
Why are we not rushing Calvin Pace and BT more? We clearly can’t cover screens regardless of how many we drop back, so why not hammer the QB and try to force mistakes?

The jets played terrible today, but they are still in great position to make the playoffs. Im not a firm believer in judging teams based on only one game. And considering all of you were hyping the Jets up as superbowl contenders after the tennessee game, I dont see how youre calling them duds after todays game. football is not a 1 game season, and you cant expect to win every game whether youre supposed to or not. The jets stunk today and serious changes need to be made. but why cant the jets win their next 3 games? I dont see why were chalking up buffalo, seattle, and miami as losses. I see an 11-5 finish and a home playoff game. The grass is always greener on the other side, and the Jets will rebound next week at home.

These games are so painful, because it’s always a slow death. Jets drop back a bunch of guys and get no pass rush and the opposing team slowly chips away at us until the score. Meanwhile, on offense, we either threw insanely inaccurate bombs or broke out the Paul Hackett Playbook and dinked and dunked for two or three yards. I just wish we’d hire the craziest coordinators and coaches out there, at least games would be sort of entertaining, sorta like how the Knicks are right now. These games are just too much to watch.

Time to change to a 4-3. If we put Pouha and Jenkins at Tackles with Ellis and Gholston at the Ends and we have Harris in between Murrell and Barton, we might be better off. Rushing three D-Linemen is a total waste. We should be rushing four plus one or two, every play. Pace and Thomas couldn ‘t cover Klecko’s son out of the backfield. They can be our backups. The whole idea of the 3-4 is to be able to mix things up and bring different looks. As Sutton doesn’t take advantage of the 3-4, why use it.
Our defensive backfield is getting eaten up. It starts with pressure. Pressure from the blitz and pressure on the line of scrimmage from the corners. We have zero pressure.
Do we have any coaches?

The jury is out on Mangina. He obviously is not going to get us to the promised land. If you can coax Cowher to come here do it…otherwise go after Spagnola.
Hopefully JP starts next week. Its our only hope.
This was like watching a Denver replay.
What is really disheartening is these coaches not doing anything to change the game plan when we’re getting wiped out.
In response to someone’s “we beat the Titans and NE, wouldnt you rather we lose these two instead of those two!?” post, NO. What is really hard to watch in these games is that we SHOULD be killing these teams and our guys are just not playing nearly close to their potential. I watched this game with one of my friends, and when he say Gore go down, he remarked, “Well, they just lost their only playmaker on offense. If they wint his game, your coaches should be taken out back and shot.” he’s right. Beating the Titans at TN, and NE in MA, then flopping to San Fran and the Broncos? That’s tough to watch.
I will say, though, Leon’s TD should not have been called back. The penalties on both sides were pretty atrocious, but that was a big goof. We get that TD, we’re in this.
An mangini has to stop with the stoicism. It works for bellicheck when youre winning superbowls! not you, though, mangenious!
I don’t now why I am surprised by the result after watching this loser franchise for over 25 years. The thing that is painful is the absolute lack of guts shown by both the coaching staff and the players. As a fan I can take losing but making a complete journeyman like Hill look like Brady becuase you are afraid to blitz is atrocious. 3 man fronts, uninspired play calling, stuffed on 3rd and 1 the same way about 5 times this year the list goes on. When you play scared in this league you lose period.
The Jets have been playing scared a lot this year and the record is really an illusion. Outside of the Titans game they have played a lot of scared football even in the games they have won (2nd half versus ARZ and NE especially). I put most of this on the coaching staff but at some point really good players in the league make plays that change games. The sad truth is that the Jets do not have any especially on the defense. Rhodes in particular is constantly out of position and I am still waiting for the first time he makes a play that decides a game.
We may win next week, but, JP Losman, if he starts, is going to throw for 300 yards next week….otherwise Trent Edwards will look like an all pro….
So Brett gets a pass again? I thought he was the missing piece…

Guy can’t throw deep. He is terrible and handcuffs Schottenheimer with his lack of knowledge and ability to only throw chest high lasers. Brett can’t make any of those nice throws Hill made (the last TD and the TD called back for holding).
All the Niners have is a guy who knows the offense and can make throws in three dimensons. I wish we had a guy who could do one of those.
The coaches have no faith in him as evidenced by the end of the first half conservative play call screen to Smith and the Smith latteral. If the latteral was Smith’s idea, then the players have no faith in Favre to drive them the length of the field. I dont know which is worse.

Mangini doesn’t get this team up to play lesser opponents. That is a firable offense. 8 days ago we’re talking Super Bowl; now we’re praying to hold on for a playoff spot. Yes, we were overly optimistic, but dammit this team DOMINATED the Titans on both lines. And this week both lines were bad.
I’m not ready to fire Tannebaum, I like the draft picks and the trades. But Mangini needs to go.

Dave – You are absolutely right. Good teams beat teams that they should beat. That we beat New England and Tennessee means far less than that we lost to Oakland, Denver, and San Francisco. And we were a defensive int return for a td away from a loss to KC. I can’t imagine that this team has enough gonads to get to the playoffs. I could be wrong, but history (including this season) says they are done.
in regards to favre, he has no deep t hreat to throw it too.. single coverage step for step with these guys, and keller is a good player but comeon third down conversions in the last two weeks you dropped perfect passes………mangeni you either gotta change the defense philosphy or quit … kotite could of done a better job then your doing…
What does everybody think Parcells reaction to this garbage would be? Just a bit pissed off. The phins are not winning by accident. The team has no fire in an incredibly hostile game. Combine that with mediocre game plans and this is what you get. More often than not they get out coached. Let’s get Ray Lewis’ opinion of fired up.

- Two weeks ago, everyone was ready to make Mangini a saint (check the archives). Now everyone says he should be fired. Look, the truth is somewhere in between. He has a problem getting these guys to take weak teams seriously, esp on the road. He’s also got coordinators who frankly just aren’t good enough. Compared to last season, we’re obviously heading in the right direction – give Mangini some time to fix the problems. And remember that he gameplans for tough opponents better than 80% of coaches.
- I don’t understand our secondary’s positioning at all. Getting beat is one thing, but consistently playing outside technique with a 8-yard cushion is just ridiculous. Mix it up already!
doug has it right, good posts. Jesusrevis keep on smoking Shaun’s stash. Mangina has one option. Fire both Coordinators and get a set. This team has such talent, no plan, but a lot of talent.
We don’t need Manloser apologists. It’s time to cut our loses and find a coach who knows what it takes to win. One mistake franchises make is hanging onto to coaches who are mediocre. By the way, the Sean Ellis situation is a disgrace and real black eye for the organization. I hope the NFL suspends him.

We need a defensive coordinator with some guts!! The cornerbacks are not jamming the receiver, they’re playing like 20 yards away. No pass rush.
If the QB is taking a 3 step drop, corners have to jam the receiver, this gives the front line a couple of seconds more to get to the QB!

Same Old Jets. The 49ers played with the attitude and passion of Singletary and the Jets played like Wesleyan vs Tufts. Totally unprepared as far as intensity and execution on both sides of the ball.
The D is a mess. The Hill rollout to the right, hitting the receiver on the comeback in the middle of the field, was a carbon copy of the Cutler pass last week. No adjustments? The 4-man rush is getting no pressure and the DBs are so intent on keeping everything in front of them they’re getting eaten alive on crosses and cutbacks. Yes, the LBs are big and slow and somewhat vulnerable to the pass but I just don’t believe 30 teams in the league have better pass D talent. Something is clearly wrong with the approach. At this point in the season, if I were the DC, I would just accept that we can’t cover and put it all on the rush. There’s nothing to lose getting burned on max pressure since you’re giving up the yards and points without it.
My fear about the vocal “Handcuff Favre” lobby after the interception flurry, was that the Jets would need a dynamic passing game at some point in the season and once you shut it down it doesn’t come back to life so easily. Especially with the cranky, ultra-sensitive LC as a primary component. Now it seems when the run gets stopped or the Jets fall behind and have to throw, it feels foreign to them and they’re out of sync. These WRs don’t have the physical match-up advantage of many teams’ wideouts and need to succeed on precision and timing. Favre doesn’t get a pass either. He, nor anyone else, elevated their game when it was crucial to do so. The OL has also taken a step backwards the last 2 weeks. Even Thomas Jones, the lone bright spot the last two weeks, took a bad line on the 4th down play and got stuffed.
This loss belongs to everyone from the CS to every single player out there.

Jets are pathetic. How dumb are Tannenbaum and Mangini? Seriously? They both must go. Sad to say that the Fish are going to win the division when Chad gets his revenge in week 17. My guess is Jets will be out of it by then anyway, so the game will be meaningless to the Jets. I kind of hope they lose out, and that’s enough to end the Mangini “era-xperiment”. He got his shot, he just needs much more experience before he gets another head coaching shot. Please please PLEASE bring in a real head coach like Cowher. And don’t blow the draft again by pulling another Gholston. And please get a legitimate deep threat, nobody respects the Jets passing game even with Favre at QB, since he could throw the ball 90 yards and it wouldn’t matter because NOBODY IS OPEN.

Coles interview was a disgrace. Talking to the press like that is equivalent to stabbing your coach and teamates (primarily Favre) in the back. He’s a locker room cancer.
I want Mangini to show some leadership and take control of both sides of the ball. Dont give Shot or Sutton and responsibility. Whenever they show the sidelines Mangini he is as shocked as we are with the play calling. Its absolutely terrible… there was one play it was 3rd and 1, it was so obvious we were going to run it wasnt even funny

Our positioning is because we play prevent defense every play like we are winning by 50. From now on we should just put the other team on the 10 yard line and see if they can score… it would make my life a lot easier.
I’m disgusted; Schotty, Sutton and MANGINI must go. The team was either not mentally prepared or poorly coached or both. The J!E!T!S! piss away the lead in the AFC, a bye, a home playoff game, all in a matter of weeks. One-hundred million dollars in the offseason for an 8-5 record after 13 weeks? Playing down to teams with inferior squads like Oakland and San Francisco? Pass-D making the likes of Thigpen and Hill look like probowlers?

if mangini had any balls he would bench coles for mouthing off and to make a point. jets were dumb to guarantee his contract but what’s done is done. he’s not doing anything on the field and he’s a detriment to team unity. make him sit and stew, and if he doesn’t like it, cut him. he’s not good enough to open his mouth — he thinks he’s TO, when he’s half a notch better than johnny lam jones.

That was bad! I still have not otten over it. In the meantime, I do believe that the Jets will capture the AFC East. Buffalo is horrible and the Jets are a better team. Remember,its not like the Patriots or Dolphins are playing “GREAT” football as of late either. The Rams had plenty of chances to knock of the Phins 2 weeks ago. The Patriots barely escaped the 2-10 Seahawks. I think that the team will be very hungry at home this upcoming week and show the fans and the media that they are still a team not to be taken lightly. I give Buffalo absolutely “NO CHANCE” of winning next week. In fact, I think this loss to the Niners may of been what we need. Every game now is a must win,there is no cushion in this division any longer. The New York Jets are winning this division and will carry momentum heading into the playoffs!
I said it at the beginning of the season and I will repeat it now. The Favre acquisition was worth it, IF we go to the AFC championship game. Otherwise, its a total gimmick by Woody & co. to sell PSLs. If we don’t go to the AFC championship this year I am not buying a PSL. Chad Pennington was far too good a person and player to be unceremoniously dumped by this constant ****show of a franchise. How many deep Favre passes this year have made you say wow? The Giants fans will snicker when we fail again. I’m sick of it.
I didn’t get to see the game due to the fact that I’m forced to watch my enemy (the Pats) every week, but It’s pretty clear that Sutton needs to go. We need a DC who knows the 3-4 well and Sutton obviously doesn’t. If I remember correctly, wasn’t he a holdover from Herm’s staff? Why are we keeping him?
I’d also possible let Schott go. It seems like he has inherited his father’s disease–making the playoffs and then playing your way out of it by being too conservative. Possibly shift Callahan into the OC role?
I’m not ready to give up on Mangini yet. I still think he has plenty to offer and it’s not like he is the 2nd coming of Rich Kotite. So far, it’s been more like Walton or Coslet, but I’m still willing to give him a chance with a better staff.
It’s time we started a fire Mangini website. He was supposed to be a defensive guru, and a coach who would be great at making halftime adjustments. He has done none of that since coming here! I want him out, and I want him out now! It’s time for the Jets to finally get a coach from the offensive side of the football, the defensive coaches haven’t worked out. Time to move on.
I am sick of this….watching rookie Peyton Hillis trample us at home and Shaun Hill throwing all over our secondary. It just isn’t right. All this money invested into this team is going down the drain. The offense looks completely flat and out of sync. Something is not right and it needs to be fixed.
Oh yeah and bring back the 4-3.
If someone had offered to 8-5 at this at the start of the year, I’d have taken it. We have Buffalo at home, and yes the Seattle game scares me, but if it comes down to the Miami game for division, well, at least its been a ride. We do need a severe slap up side the head, but this thing is still doable.
Mangina is a joke, and the only way to right the ship this year is to do the opposite of what we have been doing this year ie..blitz 6 players and run to open the pass. Why are all the pass plays 6-10 yds? We have a qb with a cannon. Bench LC as fast as you can, AND I SWEAR NEVER RUN ANOTHER TRICK PLAY AGAIN, EVER. That would be a good start.
We have the players. What we need is coaching. The way we played this week.showed that Mangini learned nothing from the Denver game. How we can rush three linemen for much of the game is beyond me. They didn’t get within ten yards of the QB. If a QB has all day to throw, don’t you think that at some time a WR with world class speed will eventually get open.
Why doesn’t Sutton believe in bringing the pressure?
I wish that someone from the media would ask him or Mangini, what the problem is. How can you win, by playing prevent all game long?
Then we can talk about the Offense. That was the worst job of directing an Offense, by a QB and an OC, that I have seen. Either Brett doesn’t have it any more and he should be replaced or Schottenheimer has no clue.
Mangini better wake up or he will be looking for a ball-boy job again.
