In Which Laveranues Coles Gets His Feelings Hurt … Again
Looks like someone is pouting that Dustin Keller has been the main target of Favre’s passes lately. Tim Graham of the ESPN AFC East blog has a great compilation of Coles talking about his now lessened role in the Jets current offense.
In a conference call with Bay Area media this week, Coles sure didn’t sound captivated by Favre’s presence and doesn’t think the legendary quarterback is as crucial to the Jets’ turnaround as others.
Here, courtesy of San Francisco Chronicle reporter John Crumpacker, is what Coles said:
Quote No. 1: “We’re in a quarterback-driven offense where he pretty much has control of everything, where before the offense was pretty much driven through me. … I just kind of become a role player instead of a guy that teams had to prepare for.”
Quote No. 2: “This is his offense. When we do throw the ball, there’s really no level of importance, where at one point it used to be where I was the guy … in position to get the ball most of the time.”
Quote No. 3: “I catch balls from the Jugs machine. The ball probably comes out harder from there than it does from anywhere else.”
Quote No. 4: “Of course, he’s the big name. He’s the Hall of Famer. He’s going to get the majority of the credit, but most of the guys who deserve the credit don’t really get it.”
Boo hoo … I too wish for the days when the offense had to rely on Kevan Barlow to run the ball … the days when the team won four games …
There’s more options on offense, the dude’s skills are diminishing … there’s no need to run it through Laveranues, the team is on a pace to score more points than the team has ever before. Shut up, catch the balls that are thrown your way and be grateful you are paid millions of dollars to do it …
UPDATE: charleyjet makes a fair point … are these quotes out of context? It seems that they could be read either way, but some things just don’t need to be said … in my mind … this would be the case here.

Coles is acting like a spoiled little brat, we give him some money and he tries to divide the locker indirectly ofcourse, but if this keeps up, if it was me, i don’t care how much of a hard worker he is or his tenure with the jets, enough is enough, this guy mouths off a little to much if you ask me, and it’s not worth it and beside his stock is getting lower every second, so I know we can’t get rid of him next year because as bent said we guaranteed his money for next year, so either we try to work something out with him or we endure another season with this guy
why would he say this crap? unless it was taken out of context which is definitely possible….. coles still shows the flashes at times but after this year its time to move on… i understand his contract is guaranteed next year but maybe we can reach a buy out or a trade… i will forever appreciate the things coles did for the jets and us fans but its over… he should have left with pennington …… just want to say huge upstate ny jets fan love this site and getting ready for a great game against san fran….. go jets
This interview is out of character for Coles. I wonder if it is taken somewhat out of context. Give Coles his due. He has been nothing but a warrior for the team. His media relations can be rocky, but he has sacrificed his body for the team.
WHy , becasue he is telling the truth / Coles was the guy teams had to prepare for, now it gets its spread around, God forbid he mention it. ANd while Favre has gotten a lot of the national credit we JEts fans know that the O line, Jones and guys like JEnkins on D have had a huge impact
Is Coles Bipolar?? Isnt he the same guy (just one week ago) that said “Cotchery and I would love more catches but were winning and everything is great. When I was younger I might make some noise and demanded the ball”……… He has to be mentally impaired or I just dont understand his week to week drama
Part of me still thinks he says what he likes to the media because he can. Maybe he did this on purpose to intentionally distract attention away from Ellis? Perhaps he told Favre he would say this. As pointed out above, he has made some positive remarks about Favre too.
I hope he comes up big today. It wouldn’t surprise me.
What a surprise, Coles got upset. Can we just ship him out of here? He sucks anyway, another game where he did nothing.
