Audible: Are You Listening, Coaching Staff?

Where do we go from here?

Ok Jets fans, this is two BAD losses in a row and the tension among fans is getting pretty high. I have been thinking about where we are and what we need to do from here.

1. I would like to see little Bill pull a grandfather Bill and get the team in full pads and full contact this week. Get the fire going and bash some heads. You can see Mangini’s frustration in the press conference. Maybe a little hitting in practice would benefit what seems to be a lethargic group of players.

2. I want Mangini to take over play calling for the defense. Defense is supposed to be his specialty! It’s clear that Sutton can’t cut it (which I’ve been saying on this blog for 2 years) He needs to take control of the team and put his stamp on it. Sutton’s calling is weak, timid and frustrating. Sutton must go, if not this week, then after the season for sure.
-If he is back next year, I will personally protest @ training camp.

3. PLAY ACTION PASSING
This is what gets me so F’in pissed. I don’t understand lil’ Schott. Most good offensive coordinators have some sort of rhythm to their play calling. I never see any rhythm from our play calling. We have a great a dominant running game. I remember the stats from last year saying that 80% of the time TJ is 7-8 yards deep we run the ball. If the TV people can realize that so can DC’s. How about we put TJ deep and run a play action pass. We can help our receivers get separation by using DOUBLE MOVES. This puts pressure on the secondary and will force them to give our receivers some space. What are we doing?

4. Put Clowney in. Stretch the field, Brett likes to chuck it. Let the fastest guy run and make a play.

    I couldn’t agree more!

  2. avatar section133 says:

MANGINI NEEDS TO SHOW SOME EMOTION. I just watched todays press conference and it is the same one that weve heard the previous games. I really hope things are different when he talks to the team. I was happy when he mentioned press coverage at the line of scrimmage. For a while i wasnt sure if the coaching staff knew what that was.

Everyone going to the game this weekend… we need to be loud the whole game. Lets make this enviroment hell for buffalo

  3. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

And after the JETS miss the playoffs, FIRE MANGINI!!! And hire Bill Cowher!!

  4. avatar Paul says:

    The Ed(itor),

If the Jets don’t make the playoffs, I would be more than open to hiring Cowher.

  5. avatar section133 says:

As much as I would like Cowher.. and trust me that would be great…. theres no way he is coming back from studio life. He is making great money and not dealing with the stress

  6. avatar junior says:

I have to actually say i dont want mangini fired. I think sutton needs to get axed though i think this defense is put together really well and i just feel he is ultra conservative with our his calls and when he uses players in situations schotty on the other hand seems like he just doesnt get it listen i watch this team come out and when they should run against a bad team they dont and when they should pass against teams they run

  7. avatar bozzie says:

Our defense, particulary the pass, is getting lit up even with the conservative play calling…so why not go out and be agressive and take some risks? It’s not working sitting back and letting everyone lite it up against us with the pass…every quarterback we face looks like a probowl quarterback against us! Our offense is definately out if sync…Cotchery and Coles were non-factors this week and we still don’t have a burner to stretch the field…The play calling and game plans are so inconsistant…it drives me NUTS!! I just wish professional athletes in all sports including the coachs got paid in full if they win, and half the salary if they lose! It sucks, I am so pasionate about our team and had such high hopes for this season…we were crusing along and we suddenly just fell apart…it is so fustrating and disappointing being a true die hard fan…

  8. avatar JoeMustGo says:

If Mangini doesn’t replace Sutton after the season, Tannenbaum or Woody should fire both of ‘em. Shotty would be good as gone too since the new HC will want his own coordinators. There’s too much talent (and salary) on this team to put up with this. Plus, I’d like to see Favre to play one more year. If they don’t straighten out and make the playoffs he’s gone too.

  9. avatar bozzie says:

Utilize Nugents roster spot to spread the F’n field!!!!

  10. avatar steviek says:

actually, parcells was pretty well known for backing off his teams when they were struggling or coming off bad losses & and pushing them harder and getting on gusy when they were doing well. usually worked out.

  11. avatar junior says:

TOP 5 REASONS SUTTON HAS TO GO

    1. WAY TOO CONSERVATIVE.
    2. HE DOESNT LACK TALENT.
    3. VERNON GHOLSTON LACK OR PROGRESSION.
    4. HE WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE IF R. RYAN WAS AVAILABLE LAST SEASON.
    5. MOST IMPORTANTLY IN PITT MR. LEBEAU MAKES IT LOOK EASY

  12. avatar faz1969 says:

I cant wait for Romeo Crennel to be our defensive coordinator next year. FIRE SUTTON!!!!!!

  13. avatar Hanger says:

Sutton should be gone by Wednesday, not sure what they are waiting on. Schott, you have one more game to pull this together…again I ask is Frave that dumb that they downed the play book or is it just the OC lack of game planning?

  14. avatar Electric Ham says:

I really hope Romeo comes to the Jets, its not like we have a lack of talent on this team the defense has been putrid the last 2 weeks there is always a reciever open against us its unbelievable

the offense barely got achance to play with all the 1st downs the niners were getting

Whats the deal with K rho?? i thought he was going to be a great player hes barely made 5 plays this year our secondary blows and no one can rush the passer anymore??? wtf happend we were getting to the qb’s great earlier in the year

every team is going to have a chance to beat us now as long as they follow the same game plan of spreading us out.

The only consistent players we have are TJ and Leon

  15. avatar Electric Ham says:

Hanger if they fire sutton the only chance we have is if mangini takes over for the D

  16. avatar Hanger says:

    Electric Ham…and….
is he not suppose to be a great defensive coach? He has to put his mark on this team or move on himself. If they fail to get into the play-offs, it is his fault. In the end the head coach is responsible.
    Sink or swim…his call

  17. avatar Electric Ham says:

im with u suttons got to go

btw i havent seen a replay but i did not see holding on that leon return was there holding a just a horrible call??

  18. avatar CJ says:

sutton will be axed if romeo comes avail. he would be a nice upgrade. mangini and schott are safe if favre comes back. brett will prberly wait till mid spring to say if he will play and by that time its too late to make those moves. and if you fire either one then most likely brett will be a one and done.

  19. avatar C P says:

    We are pathetic!

  20. avatar TOON2388 says:

time to put Gholston in over BT – not like our pass rush can be any worse

my biggest criticism of Offense is this: WHY DO WE TAKE OUT TJ IF WE FACE 2ND & 7 OR LONGER? 2nd & 7 or 8, what is wrong with running, and even if we only gain 2 or 3, 3rd & 5 should be a piece of cake with Keller & LW as options to complement JC & LC

  21. avatar Electric Ham says:

yea we need to run more in those situations BT has dissapeared since the begining of the season f him and his lazy ass i just watched the replay of the “hold” on the kickoff such bs if they dont call that we win that game guaranteed which indicates to me that we still have a good team we can pull it together just need to fix our d up a bit if the jets pull some sht like the mets have done to me the past 2 years in a row im going to jump off a bridge please lord get us in the playoffs

  22. avatar Jr.Hanger says:

The defense should have clearly put more pressure on Hill. That being said he probably would have picked them apart even more with the 2-8 yard quick dump pass.
The whole defense need to be looked at. It seems like if our front 3 don’t play with excessive passion and drive then the whole D collapses.
I believe we should get rid of Sutton and Mangini should be plenty capable of handling the defensive play calling.

On the offensive side however it is a disgrace to see the talent we have being so poorly utilized…
If Thomas Jones had 10 rushes for 56 yards, that’s 5.6 yards per carry. GIVE HIM THE BALL MORE!!!

Are you telling me the our receivers with the likes of Coles and Cotchery we could not beat Nate Clements and Walt Harris?
I guess since we never established a true game plan they continued to play them their hardest every play….

Oh yeah and what happened to Farve’s enthusiasm? I think the only other QB in the league that looks more apathetic is Tony Romo.

  23. avatar Najy says:

I think the bottom line is other teams are attacking our weakness and Jets are doing a poor job of adjusting. Plus, lack of execution is killing us. Despite the terrible game that the Jets played yesterday, we still could have won if we got a few breaks:
-Recovering the ball in the endzone by the 49ers o lineman.
-Holding on the Leon Washington return.

I hate Schotty and everything about him… I am so sick of Sutton!!!!

Here is my thing, and some one explain this to me.. As fans and the media, I highly doubt that we are smarter than the coaches.. So there has to be something that we are missing. I am sure they read the papers or listen to the radio and hear what everyone is saying about them.

-TJ getting 10 carries in a close game is inexcuseable.
-Brett Favre throwing for 140 yards is unacceptable…
-Coles and Cothcery having 1 rec each, with Nate Clement out, is pathetic…
-Getting 2 sacks against one of the highest sacked teams in the nfl makes you wonder…
-Why the **** do we always make every QB look like an all star..

It became evident to me when the Jets went out and signed Ty Law that our secondary was weak. It has become more evident in the last few games how pathetic our secondary really is… There is not much we can do about that right now so we have to play with the talent that we have.

    Soooooooooo……

    Here is a solution Mangini…

START BEATING UP THE OTHER TEAM’S QB…

Send the god damn house, blitz, blitz, and blitz some more… Stop being so god dam conservative and go get the Qb… In obvious passing downs, the Jets cannot send 3 or 4 guys and expect to get hte pressure…

I dont know about you guys… I would rather lose because we got beat blitzing then sit back and let the other Qb pull up a lawn chair and pick us apart.

I can right soo much more but I AM SO SICK TO MY STOMACHE…

  24. avatar ramble914 says:

The NY Jets – Super Bowl Pretenders!

They recover an on-side kick to start the game and on 4th and two from the 38 they punt?!! That screams that mangini has no confidence in his offense to get the 2 yards, or in his defense to hold the 49ers if they don’t.

The Jets are playing the season the way they play the games…not to lose. They think they can sit on their division lead and just cruise into the playoffs. Instead of crushing teams to win games the Jets go into that pathetic prevent defense, and now they are a prevent team. They play scared.

  25. avatar Johnny Jets Hater says:

Ha Ha Ha! You all suck you stupid Jet fans! I hope you all really love that draft pick you gave up for Favre and all that cash you spent in the offseason. Talk to
Dan Snyder about trying to buy a superbowl. Mangenuis looks like manvagina! Take that and stuff it in your cold pipes! While your at it, go suck on an egg! I have to say that this meltdown couldn’t happen to a more deserving team! Ha Ha Ha!

Lift up your cups and toast the new AFC East champs “The mighty” Phins!

  26. avatar TOON2388 says:

He Johnny JH, in the immortal words of Ed Norton “A POX ON YOU & YOUR ANCESTORS”

just as I say to the fans of Cheaters II – as the Fish are the original cheaters with your non-tarp BS in Jan ’83 – you really must have no life and are an insecure maggot if you feel the need to come on another teams BLOG & post

  27. avatar Bent says:

“If he is back next year, I will personally protest @ training camp”

I hope he stays then…your protests are entertaining!

“4. Put Clowney in. Stretch the field, Brett likes to chuck it. Let the biggest, fastest guy run and make a play.”

Biggest? Clowney is our smallest wide receiver. (He’s an inch taller than Coles, but he’s lighter than Coles – and the other wideouts).

Anyway, can we really be sure that he’ll stretch the field against seasoned veterans solely based on two preseason plays where he outran a couple of guys no longer in the league? With the Jets pass defense being so spotty he should be dominating in practice, but obviously isn’t – otherwise they’d give him a shot. Still, if they can find a spot for him to run a go route like Jonathan Carter used to three or four times a year, I guess it couldn’t do any harm.

  28. avatar Bob says:

I don’t know why we don’t put Leon and TJ in the backfield at the same time, so opposing D’s don’t know who’s going to get it and why they don’t do more play action.

  29. avatar 18andOne says:

Najy, I couldn’t agree more with you! I would rather take 100 roughing to passer penalties then watch the Jets defense continue to let the opposing team throw the football all over the field on them.

A big part of football is about your mentality. By not attacking the quarterback, your sending the message that your passive and fearful. That isn’t the best message to send when your trying to win a football game.

  30. avatar kevT says:

    Here’s my thoughts:

Defense: throw the kitchen sink. Any package and angle should be used to keep the offense off balance. We need to mix it up on where the blitz is coming from: inside backer, olb, cb’s and safeties, zone blitz packages. Wreak havoc on the opponents’ blocking schemes. Also need to backoff enough on blitzes and drop into coverage to keep offenses from abusing us deep or on hot routes. Also more press coverages should be added – but once again just sometimes to keep em guessing. Sure we’ll get beaten every now and then, but we’ll get heaps of turnovers. Everyone is duplicating the spread offense that the pats did on us and we’re not adjusting. Maybe install nickel and dime on first and second down to get the offense out of rhythm on the spread and give up on it?

Offense – pass more to tj out of the backfield. More play action. More hurry up and more empty backfield spread work. Use tj running as the third quarter hammer.

  31. avatar Bassett says:

Just to note … David Clowney is not big at all. In fact he doesn’t fit into the traditional four body types of successful receivers … which is at least 1/2 the reason why he’s languishing on the bench. He’s an anomaly. He’s too short and too slight to play a role like wallace wright on special teams, he’s a ted ginn or desean jackson type without their speed.

I love clowney, but he’s going to have to fight hard to work his way up the roster. he’s a project at this point, nothing more.

  32. avatar Najy says:

I hate to keep referring to the Giants but….

Last year, the Giants had one of the worst secondary in the league. They were old, slow, and banged up but all that was hidden by the fact that they could generate pressure…

Disguise your secondary and bring pressure on teh QB… I guarantee we start generating turnovers and making our secondary look better…

Besides, you cant expect anyone to cover a WR for more than 3 or 4 seconds… Jets opponents have at least 5 or 6 seconds to throw the ball at times…

Need to start getting that push and collapsing the pocket consistently… That is an area that Mangini needs to preach consistency..

Consistently pressure the god damn Qb.

  33. avatar TC says:

The coaching staff is playing Not to lose instead of PLAYING TO WIN!!!!!!!

  34. avatar Bent says:

Bassett – but according to his forty time, Clowney does have the speed of a Ginn or DeSean Jackson…

I’ve seen it a million times though. Fans cry out for a guy to get more minutes, reps, at-bats or whatever and then when they finally do, you realise why the other guy was getting to play instead. Hopefully Clowney will not make it 1,000,001 times.

  35. avatar Bent says:

kevT: I do like your idea, but when I’d caution that we are more likely to see more of the same with a few tweaks here and there.

When you consider that the Jets were in a position to win a West Coast road game in the fourth quarter by playing like this (hold them to a field goal on third down and then they’d have had a chance down 20-14 to drive for the winning TD without having to rush to score quickly and try and get the ball back), then maybe the coaching staff think that although the conservative approach may give up a lot of short plays and drives, if they give up no big plays, get a few third down stops, bend but not break near the goalline and maybe get lucky with a turnover or two (all of which have happened in their wins), then the defense has usually been good enough (despite the personnel weaknesses) to win the game.

Of course, if none of the above happens and then the offense lays an egg too, you end up with a defeat, but maybe they think that the risk/reward of sending a load of guys on the blitz (maybe because the coverage is too weak to risk fewer guys back there, maybe because the blitzers aren’t talented enough to get to the QB) is not in their favor because the few sacks or pressures they get will be outweighed by the easy/big plays the offense will get.

Now, I’m not advocating this approach, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the view the CS is taking. Maybe the tried the “bring everything but the kitchen sink” approach in practice and Favre picked it apart with even more ease that the current approach?

Not sure, just trying to get my head round why they might not be doing something which at first glance would appear obvious.

  36. avatar subwayfare says:

The Jets were often toasted on blitzes early in the season and the CS may be rationally reacting to that but there are additional considerations. The Jets bend but don’t break philosophy puts them on their heels, literally and psychologically, early in the game and if the offense doesn’t score first, that dynamic snowballs.

Personally, I’d rather see them take defensive risks at the outset, attempt to rattle the QB, and force him to lose confidence and be quicker to chuck a week of practice and game planning out the window.

  37. avatar Reprocity says:

The team is playing flat and the Sutton and Schott are not helping. I do see some young guys really trying to make plays out there in Stuckey and Mosely. I would like to see other players like Clowney and Murrell get a chance. That’s were guys like Victor Green came from. Even Cotchery needed a chance. We lost to a hungry team that wanted it more than we did. We have hungry players to….

  38. avatar NY Titan says:

I don’t know what it’s called… or if it even has a name, but whatever happened to that Defensive shifting about at the line, shuffling everyone in the box we did a lot last year and a bit 2 years ago? I know our team was atrocious last year and it is a coverup for weakness, but isn’t that the business they are in? I’d like to see more of that. Not sure it’s been implemented at all this year.

  39. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Titan I was wondering the same thing. I liked that it was tricky and had to throw someone off.

  40. avatar Bent says:

Repoman – Did Victor Green get his chance when the Jets were in first place or out of contention though?

Titan – That’s not really an option now because last year’s scheme called for the defensive linemen to shoot the gaps, making the most of Robertson’s quickness and mitigating the negative effect of his lack of bulk. Now we are in a two gapping system anchored by Jenkins. I think such a scheme would be susceptible to big running plays with this personnel.

Hmmm. Maybe they could mix it in with the nickel package though – that look was effective on third and long but last year’s team hardly ever got to third and long because they couldn’t stop the run. This team can!

  41. avatar KevT says:

A little followup from Pro Football Weekly’s “The Way We Hear It” section on my point about needing to mix in more pressure. Looks like the D dialed it too much…Maybe more balance is needed:

“ets’ sack slippage attributed to tactical shift

Apparently, the Jets don’t subscribe to the theory that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. After ranking among the league leaders in sacks for most of the season, the Jets have steadily regressed in the pass-rushing department recently. Why? According to OLB Calvin Pace, it has more to do with scheme than execution. “We have been playing a little bit more coverage,” Pace said. “Obviously that is not my decision. That is more game plan. … It’s not that we are getting blocked up; we have just been covering a bit more.” Word out of New York is that the coaching staff has determined that its secondary isn’t an airtight unit and could use the linebackers’ help. CB Dwight Lowery, who has epitomized enigma in making brilliant deflections followed by spells of rookie blunders, has absorbed much of the blame, as has a safety tandem that can lay the hammer but can get mixed up in coverage.”

  42. avatar Harvlis says:

We are all losing it, because it doesn’t make sense for such a good team to look awful. We have the players to be dominating other teams. It comes down to coaching. On Defense, Sutton is scared sh-tless. He has no confidence in his players and no idea how to utilize the 3-4. On Offense, Schottenheimer has shown, all season, that he has no idea how to call a game. He doesn’t know how to utilize the run and he, also, has no faith in his players. As amazing as it sounds, our coaching staff is horrible. Mangini is in charge so, he is responsible. That being said, he can’t be good, either. What a waste of talent. It’s like putting a new driver in a race car. They just can’t handle it.

  43. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

This secondary is an enigma! Kerry Rhodes…ding…you are now free to make a play on the football field! Everyone picks on Swipe, but geez, what do you expect? He’s a rookie! he’s supposed to make mistakes. Revis hasn’t been as crisp lately as he was at the beginning of the year. Coleman sucks. Ty Law is a one-trick pony that has lost his trick (INT). And Abram Elam (who I thought was improving) is back to his “make one big bone-head play per game” self like last year. What happened? Mangini won a superbowl with guys named Ellis Hobbs, Troy Brown, and Randle Gay. You can’t convince me that we don’t have equal or better talent on this staff than that!

Bitter? I’m not bitter! Who said I was bitter? :-)

  44. avatar jas says:

Sometimes I wonder if the CS is seeing the same games we are.
None of this makes any sense other than we get out coached almost weekly and remember the opposing team is getting paid to play and win also.

  45. avatar jas says:

    Oh and Brad Smith sucks!!!!!
Maybe he was injured and we have seen the last of him.
