Coles Statements In Line

by Bassett on December 8th, 2008 at 11:22 am

Thanks to The Daily News’ Rich Cimini who got the full transcript of quotes from Coles con call with the San Francisco media last week.

The excerpts given to ESPN made the situation seem a lot worse than it actually was. But in fact, it was quite benign. Something we should have assumed from the outset.

I apologize for jumping to conclusions on this one.

I apologize too. Sounds like the Chronicle was just trying to stir up controversy.

  2. avatar Bent says:

    Called it!

And now nj.com is suggesting he and Favre cooked it up between them. I called that too.

Perhaps they should focus more on cooking something up on the field???

  3. avatar Evan says:

He mentions how the offense runs through Favre. I don’t think it is Favre fault, however, that our offense is playing bad. He doesn’t call the plays, he gets to make audibles all he wants, but for the most part, the gameplan is out of his hands.

I’m just curious how much say Mangini has on the defense or offense…because I don’t understand how we keep playing the same style of play every week. If it didn’t work once, it didn’t work twice, why do we keep doing it? To be precise, why don’t we run the ball, why don’t we blitz, why do we play so much zone, why is there such a cushion on WR every play.

    how did we beat tennesse?

    PRESS COVERAGE

    WHY HAS IT DISAPPEARED…???

and why is it that the refs seem to pick us apart?

it seems like we never do anything right…

there was a blitz that i saw the niners run against the jets and favre got sacked…hey sutton take some notes…

    SUTTON MUST GO!!!

As didifficult as it is we all know that exageration, and quoteing out of context to sell papers is a common practice among most writers. This should not surprise anyone. The problem is that most fans, like most writers, do the same thing. For example : Our record is 8-5 and eventhough Vegas had us 7.5 wins for the year 98% of the fans want someone fired, or benched, after every single loss. This is trully not showing any support and helps bring morale down.

I apologize for calling L Coles Bipolar

  7. avatar jp losman says:

how come we can no longer stop the run with the front 7 and how come we can no longert generate any pressure on the QB?

i mean is shawn hill really the pro bown QB he looked like yesterday?

i love this sight for the inteligent answers, but can someone please fill me in and then maybe sutton and mangini.

    Hank
the Vegas odds were before we got Favre. This team spent so much money this offseason that anything less than a playoff berth would be unacceptable. It runs deeper than any one loss. It Mangini’s 3rd year after adisaster of a season last year. People want results not morale victories over the “big boy with the big toys” (barf). December collapses get you fired in the NFL. People have the RIGHT to be frustrated and voice there opinions after performances like that. Its not the fans who are bringing morale down, the Jets and Mangina’s staff did that to themselves yesterday. Its your attitude and the lack of demanding more out of the team you root for that makes people irate. Its the same losing mentality that has plagued this franchise for years. I guess you forgot how New York fans get because you’ve been down in Florida watching the Dolphins for too long…

My comment to your original post was that Coles has always been a warrior for the Jets and the quotes were probably taken out of context. Don’t be so fast to condemn one of our guys.

  10. avatar md says:

Off topic, I was really surprised when the Jets punted from the 37 on 4th and 1 or 2, I think it was. Not a typical Mangini decision and, yes, reminiscent of Herm. Predictably, the punt landed in the endzone for a net gain of about 17 yds. Most coaches, including Mangini, have figured out that inside the 40 on short yardage the benefit to risk of going for it outways punting. Perhaps even worse, it seemed indicative of not maintaining an aggressive mindset. Self-examination is a good thing, but that call seemed motivated by self-doubt.

  11. avatar brian311 says:

i also hated that call – and like the j-co fumble last week, it set the tone early (momentum-wise) even though points were not exchanged.

i would like to see league wide stats on how often punts from the opponents territory are downed inside the 20. i mean, its one thing if you are on the 49 yardline…but on the 37? come on. pure speculation, but i would guess 50% of the time the ball goes in the endzone and probably 25% of the time it is downed inside the 10 yard line.

  12. avatar Harvlis says:

If I was Coles, I would be pissed that I have not seen the ball for two weeks straight. He said nothing bad but, he should have. He should have called Schottenheimer a “horrible Offensive coach who is pulling this team down”. If you can’t quote him, you can quote me.

  13. avatar Biebs says:

You know… Coles wants the ball, he should trying shedding the DB. Coles and Cotchery have not been open at all the last few weeks.

  14. avatar Fonz says:

    Hey Digio,

I am in Key West Florida right now drinking Pina Coladas, it must be 5:00 somewhere.

    Wish you were here.

    Love,
    Fonzie

  15. avatar Fonz says:

    Digio

P.S… Its 81 degrees and sunny.

    give my best to all,

    Fonzie

  16. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Fonz/Hank,
Stay down in that swamp, I’m goin to Cali after the holidays.

  17. avatar Fonz says:

    Digio;)

I see you’ve never been to Margaritaville. Best Marlin fishing in the world !! Watch out for the drug cartels while in Cali.

  18. avatar Harvlis says:

Biebs, It is impossible that Coles was not getting open. All he has to do is run a slant and the QB can lead him for a completion. No one can cover him, if he runs across the field. He has not been in the gameplan. Something is wrong with that.

  19. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

A slant can still be stopped by a safety or linebacker jumping the route. Stuckey vs. KC remember? Anyone who watches tape on us or Favre knows he loves that route.

  20. avatar Harvlis says:

Green Guy, We are talking about LC. He is one of the best receivers in the league. He has shown that already, this season. Schottenheimer or Favre has a problem with him. Those are the only reasons why he has disappeared from our Offense.

  21. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Best Reciever in the league? I like Coles and he is a guy who you can trust. Tough, smart, and has good hands, but he isn’t in the top ten to 20 Wrs in the league. We need a new wide out. The Draft shopping list continues.

Upside to missing the playoffs… we only lose a 3rd round pick for Favre.
