Link: AFC East Playoff Scenario

JJ Cooper writes an easy to understand explanation of the playoff picture and explains how things might breakdown in the AFC East.
The bottom line is that the Jets need to win the next three games to secure their own destiny and go to the playoffs.

OK, so here we are in December the three of us tied for first in the AFC East. Perhaps it’s time just to reflect a bit on how we got here, review some of the decisions we’ve made. Particularly one that created quite a debate this summer. We’ll call it QBgate.
Many die hard Jets fans, most notably myself, felt that this decision in addition to illustrating the “strictly business”, loyalty free, aspect of the game, was a terrible decision from a numbers perspective.
I’m here now to further promote the merit of this argument. Not that I’m not fond of Favre, and not because I’m rooting for Pennington and the Phins, but because so many fans were so quick to call my opinion nonsense.
My opinion was that the case can be made that Favre isn’t necessarily a better QB. I believed that last years loosing effort was atypical of Pennington, and was caused by a week 1 injury that he tried to play through and because of a very weak offense.
I pointed out that with the exception of last year, despite having been subject to several significant injuries, Chad brought the Jets to the playoffs every year that he played the majority of the season!
This was to deaf ears though. If only I’d had a dollar for every time I heard the term “wet noodle” during these arguments. I rarely heard about Chad’s NFL record Passing accuracy, or I never heard about his resilience and perseverance in overcoming two injuries to his throwing arm that many thought could be career ending. Chad wasn’t even a “has been”, he was an “almost was”, he was written off by Jets fans entirely it seemed.
Last summer I showed Quantitative data that showed Chad was an asset. I showed that Chad had a longer yards per throw AVG, better completion percentage, and threw much fewer interceptions. I also pointed out that Brett has had one remarkable year in the past five, and that it was a product of a solid GB system.
Looking at the numbers this year it seems that so far Chad once again has better numbers. Total yards, Comp%, Avg Yards Per pass, less Ints, lower Int to TD ratio.
But here’s the one which is really the most telling perhaps, Chad has more plays for over 20 yds! Chad actually opens the field up more than Favre!
I like Brett, I do.
The point I’m making is that the Jets fans that said Chad couldn’t were dead wrong, and Chad has risen to the occasion of proving them wrong. I only hope he stops there and doesn’t seek revenge in week 17.
Although I have to say, if the dolphins do knock us out in a week 17 thriller I will look forward to the post game interviews with Mangini and hopefully Tannenbaum.
Someone shoot me.
Or bring back the Chad Pennington/Chuck Norris jokes. This hagiography of Chad is revolting. Just go freaking root for the Dolphins already.
Agree with Joe B.
I’d rather drown. It’s not as excruciatingly painful as hearing about Chad Pennington.
i have to agree with this article.i am a die hard jets fan and was pretty upset for what they did to chad he was not the problem.i really think that the jets are the problem and the head coach i think must go
This guy’s Chad-loving diatribe was so long, poor Dean here thinks that it’s the article of discussion.
Hey Joe B,
How’s thing’s????
I’ll say it one more time,The GB reciever’s are much, much better than the Jet’s reciever’s period!! The GB playing calling is better and more consistant………
Favre is the problem?? That’s pretty amazing when he only play’s ONE position…..When he coache’s,play’s special team’s and Defense by himself let me know!!
I’m good TC, you? Hopefully we can turn this thing around.
Joe B,
Need a WIN sunday to get the confidence back,Then go from there!!
Regardless of the Chad/Favre debate, we are at the point where Favre will have to produce to get us into the playoffs. From what I understand, that’s why we signed him. He has had two dismal games in a row, time for him to “lead” this team to victory.
If he can’t do that, then we must concede that it was a wasted year and we are no better than if we started Kellen all year. I realize that a wasted year in Jets life isn’t that much, considering we’ve had 40 of them in a row. Nonetheless, anything short of a miraculous finish and a deep playoff run makes the Favre signing a mistake.
I didnt come in here to disrespect your blog site I was just cusrious if you guys would root for Chad if we win the Division or do you guys now see him as the enemy?
As a diehard Dolphins fan, I can only say that I love your front office and Mangini for making this move. You just keep on loving Brett, and cry when Chad takes us to the division title in Wk 17.
Pennington has never been the Jets problem, and those of you that don’t agree with Matt Lafflin on this topic problem need to have another drink, or 10.
Just a thought from a dolphin fan… The Jets move for Favre ultimately created this extra competition. If the Jets keep Pennington, the Dolphins likely would be 5-9 right now instead of 9-5, and the Jets likely would still be 9-5 with Pennington at QB and their only worry would be the Patriots which would be no real big deal. The Jets would only have to defeat Seattle and then beat a Dolphins team with no proven QB on the roster. The Jets would be assured the division championship with no contenders in their way. As it is though, Miami inherits a proven QB playing at a high level and distributes the ball well to his playmakers. Now all of a sudden Miami is a contender. Wow, what a stupid move by Jet’s management. Anyway, thanks for the gift. Green Bay would not even trade Favre to Minnesota because of the issue the Jets are now faced with. Not to mention, I am sure the Jets could have demanded a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Pennington but instead just gift wrapped him for their division rivals. Thanks again Jets
