Jets Bring in Three Players for Tryouts

Are we re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic now?

Rich Cimini notes on his Daily News blog that the Jets were working out some players yesterday. Two of the specialist persuasion.

P Scott Player — Player has punted in regular season for the Cardinals, Browns but his most recent stop was in (surprise surprise) in New England. The best thing about a guy like Player is that he could be a consistent option for the team. [Patriots Bio]

PK A.J. Haglund — One of the Arena League’s best kickers (won the award in 2006), was the first kicker in his team’s history to score a TD. [AFL Bio]

DB Dowayne Davis — Bronx native, he might be a little small to play safety, but his 4.4 speed makes up for it. Comes from a school known for it’s Defensive Backs (Syracuse). [Draft Bible Video Profile]

Yes, Reggie Hodges had a terrible punt in a 4th and 2 spot from the 38 yard line that went into the End Zone … but lets be fair. Hodges is the last thing that the Jets brass should be concerned about right now. They might want to get out of their own way when it comes to calling an offense or not making every QB they face look like the second coming of Joe Montana.

  1. A new punter? This scares me a little. Is this Mangini overreacting to the criticism about not going for it on 4th and 2 from the 38?

  2. Mangini is hitting the panic button, he knows he is under the microscope, ditching a coordinator would be to invasive, so lets pick on the mediocre punter.

  3. A punter and a placekicker. You have got to be kidding me. Our pass defense is getting shredded, our offense has regressed, and we’re wasting time trying out new placekickers and punters.

Can we keep our eyes on the ball here fellas?

  4. What the f are they thinking about i dont get it

  5. Hodges has been solid. This is unnecessary.

  6. Maybe trying to remind people that they are replaceable? If I performed at my job like they did Sunday I’d get reemed.

  7. It needs to get done this weekend. Right the ship, look good doing it and show some G.D. pride in December for a change.

  8. It’s okay guys they just signed a safety, that’s all. No more kickers

  9. It wasn’t only the touchback punt. Hodges kicked a low line drive that got a big return when the Jets were in the game in the second half.

  10. If one refuses to look in the mirror to see a problem, I guess it makes sense to focus on things that have nothing to do with the problem.

  11. Mangini seems to not deal with adversity very well. I feel like he gets so tense when we aren’t playing well that the team panics with him. Please make John Clayton’s rumor ring true that Cowher could be the coach next year

  12. Whatever happened to a punter angling the ball to the corner, instead of kicking it high towards the end zone. The Giants Feagles is one of the few guys that can do this. When I was a kid, playing football in the park — I remember is wasn’t that hard to do. To me, our punter not practicing this is like not teaching the players on a pro baseball team how to slide or bunt. Once again, a coaching weakness.

As field position is so important, where teams have return specialists whos only job is to return kicks — why don’t the Jets get a kicker who can kick off into the end zone. If there is no one in the college draft who can do this — find a soccer player. It should have been done years ago.

  13. I just listened to Manginis press conference from today. He was talking about how mobile Losman is, which can only mean that he is going to once again bring our conservative, wait for the other team to make a mistake, give the quarterback 10 years in the pocket defense!!!

  14. I don’t agree –we need more kickers.
This team played better with 5 kickers around. this CS is very sharp.

  15. And remember Hodges was very important. we had to keep him weeks after he got hurt. This CS is very sharp.
