News: Jets Sign Safety JR Reed

jrreed.jpgMarcus Mason’s spot has been taken by … you guessed it! Yet another Defensive Back.

The team signed JR Reed, former Eagle backup Safety and Special Teamer. Asst. GM Scott Cohen has brought in another one of his re-treads from the Eagles, any takers on a survivor pool for how long this one lasts?

Reed was cut less than a month ago by the Eagles to make room for former Patriot FB Kyle Eckel. Here’s the Scouts Inc. information on Reed:

Reed is a four-year veteran that has been a career backup and special teams contributor. He has decent size and athleticism with good functional strength. He is an aggressive player, a solid tackler and is best as a run support defender.

Reed has good straight line speed in press man schemes but doesn’t have great lateral agility, quickness and burst in off man or combination zone coverages. His development has been hindered with time missed due to injury and is an inconsistent reacter [sic]. Reed is a young player that is still raw and needs more time to develop. He has been an effective core special teams player and returner but durability and instincts may be a concern.

… hmm, sounds like the Jets just signed Abram Elam’s more brittle twin brother …

A former secondary coach as a head coach, five Safeties (Elam, Reed, Rhodes, Smith, Ihedigbo), seven Cornerbacks (Carroll, Revis, Barrett, Coleman, Law, Lowery, Poteat) and one of the worst defensive backfields in the league …

  1. Boy we suck. At least I still have my 401k.

  2. They can start cutting defensive lineman to make room for more defensive backs. according to the schemes I have been seeing on the field they only need 3 defensive lineman anyways!

  3. He used to be good when he was with the Charlotte Hornets in the 90’s.

  4. “one of the worst defensive backfields in the league…”

Are we sure this is correct? A lot of the damage is done against the linebackers, the lack of a pass rush is always going to affect how well the DBs play and I don’t recall them giving up many long plays all season. Plus all four (Lowery, Revis, Rhodes, Elam)have contributed against the run.

Maybe we need a MIKE linebacker who can cover and Harris can play the TED role alongside him.

  5. There goes the Idea of signing Brian Kelly, and we do need LB’s that can cover.

  6. All of the Outside Linebackers are converted defensive ends. That’s why they can’t cover anyone.

  7. Most 3-4 outside linebackers are converted D ends

  8. JR Reed sucks….I think the biggest issue is no pressure it seems like the opposing qb’s have all the time in the world…like they always say if a qb has time someone will get open…now in the Jets case right now that means everyone is open

  9. The problem’s not the secondary players, it’s the scheme…

BUMP a little, cover short, play physical! That’s all coaching. They’ve been playing 10 yds off the line of scrimmage and getting killed. Lack of pass rush doesn’t help.

You all remember when the Patriots lost like 6 guys in their secondary and got along just fine…schemes are more important than secondary talent. (Though having lockdown Revis SHOULD help.) Sack Sutton.

  10. Sorry living in South Jersey I can tell you about any Eagle re-tread there is…and J.R. Reed was a special teamer thats about it

  11. Sounds like the Jets are trying to light a fire under the secondary.

Ty Law, Revis and Rhodes…what has become of you?

  12. If I were DC I would rush a MINIMUM of 5 on obvious passing downs. Revis plays man on the top WR, Law gets the TE, Harris gets the RB if there is one, otherwise send him also. Lowery gets help over the top from Elam, and Rhodes keeps everything in front of him. If there’s 5 wide, Lowery gets no help. If we’re gonna go down, let’s go down swinging.

  13. i think it’s possible ty law is hurting revis in his development

  14. I think the Jets are better off playing with ten men than with Drew Coleman.

  15. Anyone care to consider how the draft has has negatively impacted the season?

VG: little playing time / 0 production
DK- good playing time / good production
DL- good playing time / little production
    EA: 0 playing time / 0 production / 1 suspension
    MH: 0 playing time / 0 production
    NG: cut

  16. Great roster management with 12 DBs. Maybe we can sign Kelly from the Lions and make it a lucky 13.

And for this crxp, Woody wants us to shell out PSL money to see the same old JETS.

    DUMP MANGINI!!!! HIRE COWHER!!!

Can we bring Leon back from the dead??

  17. Bent you hit the nail on the head. We desparately need a MIKE that can cover. So much of the underneath crap is on our LBs not necessarily our DBs. When JR Reid was a power forward at UNC, the Duke fans had one of my favorite posters of all time: JR can’t Reid

  18. I think this is the year that Kerry Rhodes makes it to the ProBowl.. .. all he has to do now is make a play on the field.

It’s like Bill Chadwick used to say to Jim Gordon during Rangers games…” He’s (Nick Futio) got the best shot in the league, Jim, if he can only get it off…”

  19. Lets be fair, Ed Reed and Troy Polomolu are having much better years and I do not expect Rhodes to even make top 3. He has not been as good as he has in the past so this year.. is not a snub

  20. from my friend who is a big Eagles fan:
From South Florida. I hope they did not sign him to play safety. he is not good enough. he was a very good kick (not punt) returner his rookie year then he had a freak injury that they though would end his career. he fought his way back but just does not quite have the speed or explosiveness that he had as a rookie. eagles cut him this year now that they have quentin demps returning kicks

  21. I doubt he makes the field

  22. Unless he takes Brad Smith’s role on special teams.

  23. JR Reed is the best guy they could come up with? This is a joke. Another outside the box signing by Mangini. Its nice having choir boys, but if they cant play why bother? Doesnt matter who they sign, if the collapse continues he can have all the specials teamers he wants when he’s coaching special teams somewhere next season…

  24. Mangini is not getting fired and not should he. Along with Tannenbaum, they are in the process of building somthing. Sutton needs to go – Mangini needs to take over the defensive play calling the rest of the way.

  25. sorry, that was “nor should he”

  26. Guess FARVE is talking about what Mangini does not want his players to think about at this point in the season.

    Hmmm……

I see the conflict between the two of them. Lets see what happens.

But until then all you can agree (Farve loyalists all over the world!!!!!)

  27. it’s Cowher Time!

  28. There defensive backfield has been horrid this year, with the exception of Revis. They cannot cover slot receivers, LB’s cannot cover TE’s and the safety’s are lost when it comes to pass coverage. Seems like an overall lack of talent and communication, Reed will be a special teamer and thats it, cause Smith probably suffered a concussion on that play, where Willis drilled him, Clowney anyone?

  29. Dan C -

With the exception of two or three games, Revis has been outstanding. The problem lies elsewhere and starts with Hollywood.

  30. Never mind the pro bowl, Rhodes is a leading candidate for the most overrated bowl (or the running into the picture after the completion jumping up and down like a spoiled 5yo bowl).

In truth, much of his problem and all of their problems is the scheme. Since they went all prevent all the time, for absolutely no reason, sacks are down and yardage allowed is way up.

For awhile it worked, so as much as it annoyed me I bought into it, but the Pats exposed it in the second half and I am still not sure if Mangini realizes it has been exposed.

I am so sick of listening to Mangini explain things away with “gameplan specific” and his “Scheme”.

The scheme isn’t working ,what more evidence do you need Erik?

Play freaking football, rush the damn passer, that should be this teams strength and identity. Watch the Steelers play the 3-4.

If freaking JP lossman complets a big one to Evans so be it, I’ll take my chances, but I am certain he will make his share of mistakes if he feels the heat.

  31. I want to see some “team defense”. EVERYBODY GOES TO THE FOOTBALL!!!!!!

  32. If you think MANGINI isn’t getting fired if the JETS don’t make the playoffs, then I have a bridge to sell you. Woody needs to sell PSLs and he isn’t selling them if MANGINI blows this playoff opprtunity. DUMP MANGINI!!!!

  33. Someone buy this guy’s bridge already so we can stop hearing about it.

  34. JR Reed brings super bowl experience and consistency on special teams. If anyone watched the patriots v. eagles game last year you can see the potential Reed has as a safety. Lets give the kid a few games before we make any harsh judgments on this move. Go Jets

  35. Mangini is the same coach that went into NE and Tenn and beat both teams that nobody on the planet thought they could beat. Mangini has to realize this team has looked tight and uncomfortable since the press clippings blew smoke up their asses. He needs to get this team back on track and quickly….I am a big Mangini supporter but if they lose this division I cant agrue with whatever Woody does.

  36. Considering he hasnt made a play all season it would make sense if Rhodes made the Pro Bowl this year…….He should have made it the last 2 years when he actually deserved it

  37. For all of the Crennel lovers?? How has Clevelands defense looked in the last 4 years?

I hate Sutton as much as anyone but Romeo’s D has been worse than ours.

  38. Brett and Jets heading to Super Bowl.

  39. I like this move. JR Reed was really impressive in all the Birds games I watched last year. My buddy is an Eagles nut and he has nothing but good things to say about Reed. The guy makes tackles and plays with a lot of emotion.

  40. Thanks, Bent great point. Our DBs have had some poor games these last two weeks, but I think our real weak spot lies in no MIKE LB.

  41. Good riddance Marcus Mason.
I got a good feeling about this guy.

  42. i’ll give 2-1 that he doesn’t even see the field

  43. To the people who are calling for Cowher to replace Mangini:
It took him over a decade to win a Super Bowl; think you can wait that long?
Personally, every time we win I’m glad we didn’t hire Norv Turner and ever time we lose I’m sad we didn’t get Mike Tomlin.

  44. For anyone who doesnt think that Mangini should be fired if the collapse continues I just have some food for thought.
When Mangini came in here 3 years ago, he was supposed to be billed as an in game strategist and defensive guru. 3 years later with a group of guys he brought in, the Jets are still a mediocre defense with an awful secondary. He has one playoff berth with Herms boys playing Herm’s 4-3. Since they’ve switched to his 3-4 they are 12-17. Like Bill Parcells says “you are what your record is”. He also continuosly fails to make halftime adjustments or be able to get his d off the field on 3rd down.
If he was to come back next year after a collapse I would find it impossible to have any faith in the direction the team was going. He would be a lame duck coach and his players would tune out his message.
99% of the people in my section feel the same way. We do not want to feel like we are being douped into believing the hype about this guy. We want results. It’s year three now and he really has no excuses to not bring this thing home.
Is it wrong to demand more out of your team that I pay damn good money to watch? I dont sit in Florida and get the highlights from ESPN. I sit in the rain, cold and watch every play(although I missed some games this year due to back surgery). I have alot more invested in this team than fairweathers like Hank and Fonzie.
This guy has three game to get the job done. If he doesnt I dont want him back, and any true Jet fan shouldnt either. I guess some have just grown content with mediocrity, but not me. 45 games, 3 drafts and 140 million spent in contracts this offseason, if he doesnt do it now, when will he ever?

  45. I believe most people on this blog are schizoid; love Mangini when we win, Hate Mangini when we lose, love, hate, love, hate love and hate again.
Take some Prozac guys, we will win sunday and you all will love Mangini again.

  46. I sure hope so Hank its just a product of the insanity this team brings to its fans I believe Mangini is a good coach most coaches dont win a SB in their first few years, last year was a product of a horrible o-line and injuries so ill just pretend it never happend besides 06 he has done pretty well. We have to run the damn ball on sunday and bring the blitz go Jets

  47. Pretty certain Mangini played the 3-4 from the get-go and won 10 games. And the team he inherited from Herm was a disaster. Not saying he hasn’t earned some criticism but you have to give him credit for his successes. My own personal opinion is that we’re seeing a guy with great football knowledge experience growing pains in developing superior HC leadership skills. I hope these last three games are the trial by fire that forges them. No new coach is going to ride in on a white horse and deliver us. At least not in the short term.

  48. I recall that the successful Dallas teams that had Aikman and Michael Irvin on them would often score a big play or complete a touchdown pass by using a pick. On Sunday Mike Martz decided he would win by cheating, and Jets defenders got picked off the route on at least three occasions. So if there is a problem, it’s the coaches, Mangini and Sutton, not making the adjustment, which I guess would be to bump the receivers. Second, was that holding penalty on the kickoff return so obvious? Suppose it isn’t called. Then the Jets win and we’re singing a different tune.

  49. Electric Ham:

I trully agree agree with your synopsis and I also beleive that we must go back to our strengths ie. running the football and pressuring the QB. This is how Tanni built this team. A good indication of how fans feel about their coach is the high expectations they place on him. They expect him to take them high into the playoffs if not the super bowl in his third year, something, I think, has never been done by ANY coach new to headcoaching.
Most of this frustation also comes from the realization that superman’s cape did not come with their Lord and Savior QB package.

  50. Eddie – sub is right, they played 3-4 in 2006.

Mueller – I didn’t think it was a hold. And teams have been picking/holding on the edges a lot, specifically NE and Denver.

As for J R Reed, I was wondering if they maybe brought him in to be the upback in the punt formation. This may not seem like a crucial role, but it’s one that Brad Smith plays and if he can’t go this weekend and they replace him with someone who doesn’t know what he’s doing, you could end up with a crucial punt block.

Again, I’m not sure the DBs in coverage are the main problem, although the book on Reed is that he is decent in man-to-man situations.

  51. Bassett,
Actually sounds to me that they signed ERIC SMITH’S equally brittle but much tougher brother. A little run support would not be a bad thing.

  52. Ok Ok Im wrong, they played a hyrbrid, not a true 3-4.
Thanks for your medical diagnosis Dr but Im not crazy or need medication. Im not saying he should be fired right now.
IF THEY COLLAPSE, HE SHOULD GO. Thats all Im saying. If we go 8-8 , 9-7 how can he come back next year? That was the premise of my post. You guys are into semantics. I just want to know how Im crazy for saying that? Please enlighten me, cause you guys seem to know everything from football to physchological disorders to philosophy and debate.

  53. JR Reed was a very good player in college making a whole lot of school records and has played behind one of the the most physcial safety in the NFL. I also watched him against some of the best passing offenses and he did great. I think this is his time to shine.
