News: Vilma Trade to Net Jets a Third Rounder
Thanks to the many of you who tipped me off on this one. Adam Schefter writes that the Saints have done what was expected of them with their draft picks. The team will not re-sign Vilma, and thus will save themselves higher draft picks for their trades for Vilma and Shockey.
The Saints did not re-sign Vilma, and will not attempt to do so until he becomes a free agent, thus the value the Jets and Giants receive now can be determined.
The conditional fourth-round pick the Saints traded to the Jets for Vilma will become a third-round pick in 2009. The Jets used the Saints fourth-round pick in 2008, but they will have to return a fourth-round pick to New Orleans this April.
Although he’s headed to free agency officially, I’ll be shocked if Vilma signs with another team eventually. I’m sure they’ll draw it out a little so it looks convincing, but I’d expect to see Vilma back with the Saints.
Trades that have picks for Jets in the balance (let me know if I forgot anything):
Pete Kendall — The Jets will get their fourth rounder this year from the 2007 trade.
Dewayne Robertson — Jenkins predecessor will likely net the team nothing, due to his level of playing time in Denver.
Jonathan Vilma — As noted above, after using the Saints fourth rounder last year, the Jets will trade their fourth rounder in 2009 for a third rounder with the Saints.
Brett Favre — Favre has already qualified for the third rounder (50% of snaps) if the Jets don’t make the playoffs. Should they make the playoffs but don’t head to Tampa, it’s a second rounder. If the team is Super Bowl bound, it’s a first.
I could be missing something here, so please let me know and I’ll adjust it, but the net of the Jets picks for 2009, assuming they make the playoffs are: Jets 1st Round, Jets 3rd Round, Saints 3rd Round, Skins 4th Round, Jets 5th Round, Jets 6th Round, Jets 7th Round.
Traded away picks would be: Jets 2nd Round (projected) to the Packers, and Jets 4th Round to Saints (for the 3rd in 2009 and the 4th in 2008).

a) Don’t they give up 3rd and 5th rounders for Jenkins? Or did they already do that last year?
b) How do they have two fourth rounders if they give up one in the Vilma deal?
Yeah, we lose our own 4th rounder this year.
This sequence of trades could ultimately end up working out nicely for the Jets.
If Favre retires after this year doesn’t the Packers owe us a fifth? If the worst were to happen at least we have somewhat of a safety net.
Oh and I hope someone else gets Vilma. Not signing him is a gamble and I hope they lose. He is having a solid year.
Saints are not going to sign him, they would like to but he is going to want big money, this was expected.
I wouldnt mind us getting Vilma back…Thomas,Harris,Vilma, and Pace what a LB group…..Vilma would be great…too bad he didnt have Jink up front when he was here….he could have had some monster seasons under tangini…
oh well …wishful thinking….
Jets 1st Round,
Jets 2nd Round – TO PACKERS
Jets 3rd Round
Saints 3rd Round – FOR VILMA
Jets 4th Round – TO SAINTS
Skins 4th Round – FOR KENDALL
Jets 5th Round,
Jets 6th Round,
Jets 7th Round.
yeah! wasn’t think too clearly thanks for the tip on the 4th rounder (duh)
Isnt Mel right about the 3rd and 5th rounders to the panthers?
Yes, he is right that we lost the picks in our last draft.
harlan
Uh just to let you know Harlan I’m not a guy…
Hopefully this news should come as no surprise to anyone who has listened to me over the last few months!
Hey! We should trade Coles for Vilma and then use him as a pass rushing outside linebacker. Aaaarrgghhh!!!! (Please nobody suggest this).
Yes, we already surrendered the Jenkins picks in the 2008 draft.
Expanding what JAGG said:
IF Favre retires at the end of the season, we get back a 5th if we end up giving them our first (if Jets make the Superbowl and Favre plays 80% of the snaps in the regular season and – for the purposes of that 5th rounder only – at least 50% in one playoff game).
Alternatively, if he retires at the end of the season and we end up with a 2nd rounder (70% snaps and playoffs), we get back a 6th.
IF he retires and we miss the playoffs (since he has already secured over 50% of the snaps) we will give up a 3rd and receive back a 7th.
Again, these returned picks only apply if Favre retires at the end of the season. Now let’s hope that’s the last time he is associated with returned picks this week.
I would love to see J-Vil back in Green & White
I believe he would be a great OLB going sideline to sideline and dropping in coverage.
Better than that DHead BT what happend to this guy? I thought he was just lazy last year. he played well earlier in the year but hasnt done jacksquat recently.
With Jenkins anchoring our D and commanding double teams Vilma would be a beast. I love watching him play for the Saints what a great Jet he was and will always be . But I dont think he would ever come back here he prefers the 4-3 and I dont see us changing from that anytime soon
Tannenbaum is probably my favorite GM in the league (and yes i saw the “was Brett necessary column” yesterday).
Who is your second favorite? ;o)
We can’t afford Vilma, which is why we needed to get something for him while we could. However, even ignoring the Jenkins effect, he would have been so much better alongside a 260 pound Harris rather than a 239 pound Barton.
And if we had a MIKE linebacker that could cover, we’d be much better against the pass too.
I still think he is a little overrated. And while he has had a statistically productive year, he’s been inconsistent every time I’ve seen him this year. Someone will overpay for him. It won’t be the Jets.
Vilma would suck as an OLB. Pace and thomas are very effective because they can hold up at the point of attack which is something Vilma could never do. If a guard could push vilma back what do you think an OT would do! David Harris is listed at 243lbs as per the team site.
Quick thing I learned this season: Converted DE playing outside in a 3-4 helps agaisnt the run but they can’t cover anyone!
Bent, I couldn’t believe how many times you had to lay down the whole Coles can’t be traded bit. It was pretty straight forward… sigh
It has never been clear exactly what the Robertson deal is. I have heard conflicting reports and am not convinced that the Jets get nothing if he plays less than 65% or whatever it was. I thought it was a very late round no matter what.
i rarely come around but lately i have been hearing irate rants about mangini (plus schotty and sutt) and tannenbaum. frankly mangini and his crew warrant the anger.
However Tannenbaum IMO, has earned respect. to me he judges talent better than most gms. To me he’s in the category of Ozzie Newsome, and Bill polian, or at the very least damn close. pulling off the jenkins trade had big risks, the guy was classified as lazy, but he has become very important. Executing trades to get revis and harris were superb. taking a chance on keller was gutsy and garnered rewards. Finding a diamond in the rough, Leon Washington, proves the guy does his homework.
I’m not saying he perfect because no GM is, but he’s better than 90% of the other GMs out there.
as for mangini, grow a pair of b***s and stop with the conservative plays, throw downfield and blitz, you fetus.
Yes, Tan’s a good judge of talent. That’s why Golston and Cotchery have been tearing up the league right? No, he’s 50/50.
Come on now? It’s time for the jets to make the sexy pick – maybe some trades – Crabtree? Wells? Moreno? Can I get a witness? Who do the Jets have on offense that scares you? Who warrants double coverage?
I hear you Igs. I think the Jets needs a game breaking WR the other team’s defense need to key on a weekly basis. We are not going to get Crabtree but we can possibly trade for a WR like Chad Johnson to be that game breaker.
Gives Gholston a chance. He has not had much of chance with Pace and Thomas playing well ahead of him. I think the hold out really left Gholston behind the other LBs. Next year Pace can move inside while Gholston can be the OLB. I don’t see the Jets bringing back Barton next year.
Oh and I hope someone else gets Vilma. Not signing him is a gamble and I hope they lose. He is having a solid year.
this deal is done saints an vilma worked this out when he was traded to the saints
