Here’s my list of ups and downs from yesterday’s game. Add yours or any we’ve left out in the comments below
UP
Leon Washington — Although he got just one carry, he made it count on a 47 yard scamper to paydirt. Washington also had a 43 yard kick return that was .
Offensive Line — No (official) QB Hits, no sacks and helped the backs gain 138 yards on the ground.
David Harris — Harris is back and healthy, and he’s looking better in pass protection than earlier in the season. Harris’ tackle numbers are up, but only because the line ahead of him is wearing down and runners are leaking through the line ahead of him. Harris also had a pass defensed (but could have been an INT).
Abram Elam & Shaun Ellis — Elam’s strip sack at the end of the game and Ellis’ recovery and rumble saved the game for the Jets. Ellis
Primary Receivers — Coles and Cotchery got involved again, going for nine catches, 116 yards and TD between the two of them.
David Clowney — Clowney caught his first NFL pass in style, tipping it to himself and making a play for 26 yards. Clowney also had one special teams tackle.
Calvin Pace — Two sacks on the day for the big guy, which now ties him with team leader Shaun Ellis.
DOWN
Brett Favre — Although overall the offense played well, it was statistically, not a good game for the veteran QB.
Kenyon Coleman & Kris Jenkins — Two thirds of the defensive front had TWO tackles during the game. Is it any wonder the Bills ran for 158 between Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson?
First 58 Minutes of Defense — Most of the game it didn’t go well for the Jets. Good thing they listened to Mangini’s message about not giving up and playing the full game for the win.
Special Teams — The Jets have been beat by fake punts this year already, and it happened again. Leon also allowed too many punts to start deep in Jets territory, electing to not even fair catch balls that would have added 5-10 yards of breathing room that he assumed would go into the End Zone.

UP & DOWN
Brian Schottenheimer – The first two drives were absolutely brilliantly called, catching the Bills off guard, mixing up plays and personnel well. But then he went into some sort of funk. Those three passes from the shadow of the end zone? I understand trying to be aggressive and catching them off-guard, but when it didn’t work on 1st down, one run might’ve helped in there. And the 4th quarter, in general, lacked the creativity we saw in the first.

if anyone saw fat-cessa’s sports show last night….. he played a clip from favre “who knows maybe i dont have the arm anymore”….. referring to the long pass that was picked.
“remember those words folks” was what that arrogant fat ass said.
HELLO?? favre couldnt follow thru completely b/c he was hit……but leave it to francessa to show just that bite and not the rest of it so we could hear it in its full form.
anyway….on a bigger note……i told so many friends how this week we would clearly be more aggressive with our defensive play calls, b/c we were facing a QB that was mistake prone and just not a top QB.
um…nope. WHAT F—-N CENTURY WILL IT BE WHEN WE DECIDE TO MAKE OTHER TEAMS OFFENSES ADJUST TO US?????!!!!!!
its sickening already…..and g-d forbid we let chad come in on a sunday night in front of the entire country and knock us out. WAKE UP MANGINI AND SHOW US YOU KNOW HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF A DEFENSE!!!

theres 1 more down.
The jets coaching staff
-
Farve pretty much only did well in the first quarter. After that he was off on most his throws, usually throwing behind receivers on their routes… at least that is how I remember it.
-
I disagree that “overall the offense played well.” To me, failing to get a first down in the fourth quarter negates the good things they did in the first. That also put a ton of pressure on the defense, which is getting far too much blame for this near-loss.

The entire Jets coaching staff has been down for weeks.
How they could have taken such a dramatic turn for the worse is still beyond me, and I don’t care how it’s rationalized it all rests on Mangini. He’s lucky the Jets didn’t lose yesterday.
Call me a radical but I say it’s high time the axe came down on Sutton. It’s not like he’s doing anything anyway, it seems like Mangini has to end up making the defensive play calls at some point every year anyway- why not start now.

I think the coaching staff week in and week out formulates a good gameplan so it gives the team the best chance to win. Now what isnt good is the part of execution. I can’t stress this enough. Some players on this team execute better than others and some just dont. Yesterday was a good example of how this team needed to win a tight game to prove to themselves that serious changes in execution need to be made. The achillles heel of the defense is not the pass defense entirely but that in the secondary there is not one player that stands out and whose game is so much superior to the other defensive backs. Each player back there has strengths and weaknesses and sometimes based on the offense we play against and the matchups our weaknesses show more than our strengths. What we are lacking is one player (and the player can still be on this team) who can raise his level of play more than his teammates. We have a bunch of players who have great games but that one player who can keep his level higher than the others will eventually take over and the rest will follow and try to surpass him. Good job mangini for getting lowery he has truly pushed Rhodes and also Elam for stepping up his game. That one player on this team now that does it will make his play spread throughout the entire team. See Jenkins after the first buffalo win. That person will lift the entire team and even bring FARVE into liking the Jets as he felt so confident after buffalo. Maybe it could be Jenkins again on defense maybe it can be keller if FARVE uses him right, maybe it can be a player who is rising up on this team but we need that player. The giants had it last year with Strahan we need to continue where we left off.

When Brad Smith comes back form his little injury, we MUST run the option!! And when we do, I do not want to hear it being called the “Wildcat” formation, its a true Option play!! Run it 2-3 times a game, and heres an idea, actually let Smith throw it once in a while…
I like the style of play we used in the first quarter, I don’t understand why we shyed away from that so early. We really need to utilize Leon for more then 1 carry a game, especially when our run game is consistently running for 100+ a game…

@ klecko71,
You want mangini to wake up? lol you’re gonna be waiting for a while.
I’m tired of seeing him on the sideline, looking like he is gonna cry, trying to hold in his emotions. It’s like he doesn’t wanna be human.
I used to like him, but slowing starting to despise him for not showing any emotion when the team does good or bad.
We went from herm, who couldn’t manage a game without a clock specialist, but was a good motivatior/preacher who showed tons of emotion. To mangini, who supposedly knows football, but doesn’t show an once of emotion.

Basset,
Although the Jets coaching staff had another horrible performance calling defensive schemes, we have to mention the following:
1. Bryan Thomas – he is the worse player on the team. I counted 4 missed tackles by him yesterday, not to mention that he brings nothing to the table in pass coverage or pass rush.
2. Kerry Rhodes – he’s offically checked out for the season. Myrshan Lynch is his daddy.
3. The defense, with the exceptions that you pointed out above, gave up on Mangini. They didn’t want to hit or tackle. I think Mangini has lost the team, at least from a defensive perspective.
-
hey jason, that is the worst idea ever.
what i liked about yesterday was that the team won that game. they didnt play there best, but somethimes to get back on the right foot, you need a little luck
also the reason why i dont care about the option, is bc the jets are one of the best power run teams in the game. just give it to jones, and washington and we will be fine. the line is made for running and then brett can do the short passes

BT worst player on the team, a little overstated. How about Eric Smith who cannot cover or tackle? I think its more scheming on defense. When you consistently only rush 3 or 4 players, you are not generating a pass rush. Notice when the Jets blitzed Elam at the end of the game a TO was caused, what a novel idea bring more than 4 guys to rush the QB. I am not saying blitz every down but when the other teams Off. Coordinator know everyone is pretty much dropping back into coverage, game planning against this team is easy.
As for the offense it was absolutely putrid in the second half, no 1st downs in the 4th quarter is inexcuseable. 3 pass plays from 3rd yard line, great play calling as usual Schott. With that said a win is a win and this team needs major improvements if they think they are going to be playing in January.
-
kerry rhodes – major major major DOWN. the tackling yesterday was horrible. look at players like ed reed or polomaulo – when there is a pile up or gang tackle, they are looking to fly in and take someone’s head off. rhodes has been terrible this year.
-
swizzle,
Good point! I forgot about Eric Smith, because he’s invisible out there. Regardless, BT is worthless. Mangini should be giving someone else a chance in BT’s place.
-
Smith had a good pass breakup yesterday.
-
vg is bt’s replacement…….hopefully he devopes soon, because im also kinda gettin tired of thomas, been a dissapointment since he stepped in the league
-
Suttom and mangini must go. Bring in Cowher!!!

Bassett,
I agree with all your observations. Leon letting the ball roll down to the two yard line, was bad news. Field position is so important. Leon is usually very smart. I would like to see if those balls were catchable.
I would include on the Down side – Play-calling (on both sides of the ball) and Tackling. Both were horrible.
How could they only throw one ball to Clowney?
I would say the same for Leon but, I think he had a concussion, after his TD run.

Don’t forget Al Faneca on your down list. Check the replay the reason Jones is tripped up on the 4th and two late in the fourrth qtr is because of Fanaca’s matador block allowing Buf D-Linemen to get low and grab Jones Feet.
-
REMEMBER THAT NOT ALL TEAMS HAVE A SPECIAL TEAMS LIKE THE BILLS. THERE IS NO REASON TO OVERREACT ABOUT SUNDAYS GAME. BUT WHY DIDN’T WE CONTINUE TO RUN THE BALL. TJ AVERAGED ALMOST 4 YDS A CARRY. WHY CANT WE FIGURE OUT A WAY OF USING LEON BETTER. HOW ABOUT A HANDOFF TO LEON AND REVERSE TO ANYONE ELSE. IM SURE THE DEFENSE WILL FOLLOW LEON EVEN W/O THE BALL.

I have to disagree about Favre being “down” – he really wasn’t at fault for either INT and he engineered some nice drives for us in the first half. I would put in right down the middle for the game.
I agree that the ST were awful yesterday – although, they weren’t too faked out by that punt, it seemed that they had it mostly covered, but just didn’t make the tackle. Leon did not have his best day catching punts – but I can look past that since he can make a play at any time and he did it again yesterday.
