Does This Team Have a Leader?

I was lying in bed last night thinking about the lack of leadership on this team. I haven’t seen anyone on this team step up and take the leadership role.

Now is the time for someone to step up and take control of the team and will them to win out. When we got Favre everyone expected him to be the leader. So far, I have not seen him put his stamp on this year’s squad. Kerry Rhodes seems invisible, and Ellis is getting arrested.

Now it the time to step up and will this team to victory, but who will lead?

  1. I would say that T Jones is the emotional leader of the offense, he gets all of the players excited to play in the endzone before the game and we do have Favre…..On defense??? I thought it was Barton but where has he gone the last 3 weeks. Suprisingly that just happens to be the same time that Jenkins has vanished. Without a dominant Jenkins this defense looks alot like last year……Maybe D Bowens?

  2. As sad as it is to say, we will get beat in Seattle this week. This team has zero confidence and even the great Favre is questioning himself and looks like a wet dog at times.

As usual, we will have to sit and scoreboard watch, hoping that Warner and Co. will show up and lay a smack in New England. If not, this season is over and to make it worse, in this scenario, if the Jets beat Miami at home- we would be handing the division to an 11-5 New England team.

I’m not so much concerned with the outcome of this season, barring a super bowl appearance because it is evident, our coaching is horrific, we have rented a Qb, the receivers are aging, the Defensive line minus 77 on 1/2 the plays is a mess and I just spent $30,000 on ticket rights.

For 27 yrs, it’s been a common statement in my home as well as all you others and well…Same Old F***** Jets.

Happy Holidays Everyone, have a safe and happy new year!

  3. Obviously the leader is the head coach . . . right? Seriously, at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if he shows the team Titanic on Saturday night and has Oscar de la Hoya talk to them about fighting like a champion.

  4. good question…very good question

hopefully, with million dollar salaries, grown men getting paid to play a child’s game have enough pride in what they do that they don’t need a “leader”…

we’ll see….I sure don’t like what we’re seein, and i’m not sure we’ll beat the hawks…we will see

  5. We will beat Seattle.

    Sean Locklear-T- Seahawks Dec. 15 – 9:17 pm et

Coach Mike Holmgren said Monday that LT Sean Locklear (toe) probably won’t play this week against the Jets.

Rookie Kyle Williams is expected to get the nod. Locklear, who was already filling in for the injured Walter Jones, dislocated his toe in Week 15. The Seahawks are going to have trouble with the Jets’ defensive front.

    3rd String Left Tackle???

    Matt Hasselbeck-QB- Seahawks Dec. 15 – 6:15 pm et

Matt Hasselbeck (back) is not expected to play in Week 16 against the Jets.

Seneca Wallace will get another start after leading Seattle to a comeback win at St. Louis Sunday. Coach Mike Holmgren says Hasselbeck is improving, but isn’t even ready to back Wallace up. Charlie Frye will fill that role.

    Seneca Wallace???

    Jordan Babineaux-DB- Seahawks Dec. 14 – 5:37 pm et

Seahawks DB Jordan Babineaux suffered a concussion in Sunday’s win.

Babineaux is a key special teamer and Seattle’s top nickel back. He returned a fumble for a touchdown against St. Louis, his second defensive score this year. Babineaux also has 55 tackles, three breakups, and a pick.

    Their Best DB????

Come on guys send the blitz….. on that rookie 3rd String LT

You all seem to have forgotten that Favre can turn it up and go wild at any time. 6 TD’s vs Arizona was still this year. Favre has to be the leader for this team or we wont make it.

  6. Do you think we could aquire Chad Pennington to hold a clipboard and be our leader? Motivate our players and coaches in all three phases of the game? I caught a glimpse of Miami’s game on Sunday and there he was as usual trying to fire up his troops! No one has ever questioned his leadership, determination and passion for the game and for winning! It’s time for one of our million dollar premadonna’s (player or coach) to step up to the plate and get our inconsistant girls back on track!!!

  7. Electric- your logic is certainly on point, that is if we were talking about a functional NFL team.

But I’m sorry to say that Sutton isn’t crafty enough, Ellis isn’t quick enough and these ‘pass rushing’ linebackers aren’t adept enough to beat even a 3rd string left tackle.

As for Babineaux, if Mr. Favre opened his eyes when he threw and we could get anyone other than Coles to run a sharp route- maybe then we could capitalize but again, I’ve seen 1-13 Jets teams play with more confidence than this, it’s almost like they’ve given up.

I was all for the Favre trade and will always like it for the balls it took but on the same token, I mentioned it was a risk and if we got the ‘05 Favre it wouldn’t make a difference. And this has sure been the ‘05 Favre.

And if #10 down in Miami isn’t proof enough to Woody that our coaching, front office, system, etc. is horrible, than I’m not sure what is. I never liked Chad here but it’s evident at this point that the ‘Jets’ were a severe hinderance to his play and now that we are making a hall of fame quarterback look mediocre, it is a problem for the Jets. You can’t blame two quarterbacks!

  8. droseatwork -

Are you serious? No one was asking this question during the five-game winning streak, during which Jenkins and Favre were definitely the leaders. They will snap out of this funk; just wait and see. There are plenty of veterans on this squad, and several with post-season experience. Favre will step up, as will Jenkins, Faneca, TJ, etc. I just think this squad is beat up and it is December ball. Perfect time for a get well game in a warm dome against a struggling Seattle team. I know, I know……….with the exception of St. Louis, they haven’t dominated losing teams this season. They will beat Seattle by 10 points or more. The Dolphins……………..that is a toss up.

  9. Electric,

Although I would love to pound Seattle, the proof is in the pudding! Just about every quarterback we have faced this year looks like they have probowl talent against us! The Seattle offensive line isn’t going to have any trouble against our pathetic pass rush since we are not aggressive and do not blitz nearly enough! I hope we win, believe me, but being 0-3 on the West Coast this year and our lackluster play and play calling leads me to believe this may be harder then you assume….

  10. We played San Fran w/o their Clements and we let their third string QB look great against our defense.

We played Buffalo w/o their best pass rusher DE Aaron Schobel and their starting QB.

We played Denver w/o their all world CB and their third string RB ate us up alive.

We played New England minus their all world QB and with a dozen other starters on IR

We played Cincinatti w/o their All-Pro QB

all these obvious favorable circumstances and the team still has either lost or had to claw their way to a win.

The Jets have no significant injuries this deep into the year, reached their highpoint and are fading. Playing a wounded animal with not much to play for at this time of the year, when you are on the path of hanging on for dear life to get into the playoffs does not seem to motivate this team…the question of lack of leadership is a very fair one…the fact that it even has to be asked proves that there isn’t one…nobody gets in anybodies face, they are a replica of their head coach (non-emotional) too even keel…their is no Teddy Bruschi,no Junior Seau and it works against them…Rhodes tries to be, but when you tackle like a girl (see him play tag with Marshawn Lynch sunday), its hard to call guys out…Favre likes to have fun and let a big play motivate, but the big play isn’t there. Leon Johnson is the only statement guy on the team and he only touched the ball 2x on offense Sunday…this team still lacks identity and leadership with 2 games to go…that is a danger sign…

  11. Once again, Pennington is not the reason the Fins are where they are. The Fins have scored 16, 16 and 14 points in the last three weeks. 4 TDs in 3 games. The Fins defense has not allowed a TD in the last 3 games. Only 8 field goals. That is why they are winning. DEFENSE

  12. WiscoDan,

It’s easy to do things when you’re winning the “character” that mangini talks about is supposed to show its self when you’re losing.

So far I haven’t seen that character so far this year.

  13. If Gholston can’t pass rush on a fellow rookie who isn’t even that highly touted than something is wrong. I still think a full preseason process will benefit him greatly and have hope for him.

I don’t get the blame on the offense. Look at the points scored? Many of them came from Leon on special teams, but we’re far from bad!

The problem is defense. Bob Sutton MUST go. Shotty should stay and Mangini is getting a bad wrap. Reminds me of the damn Eagles fans who want to get rid of McNabb. It’s just dumb.

  14. Kd-

Does he throw crucial picks? Does he step up and provide the 1, or 2 big plays each game when needed?

When he was here he was among the most frustrating players I’ve ever watched and you could bet your house he’d never win a big game, especially on the road.

That being said, from his attitude, to his knowledge, to his leadership and ultimately play on the field- he is at the top of a long list for why Miami is winning. Sure, he’s not the only component but to discount his impact is assinine at best.

  15. whoever is the leader should read todays daily news / tim smith article that says the jets are a lock to miss the playoffs.

gotta love it when ur hometown writers bash the team and publically humiliate them.

we are headed for a collapse of huuuge proportions unless we man up and come together as a team and win these last 2 games despite the worst coaching in football

  16. Hold up everybody you all are trying to tell me we cant get to the QB, that our “pass rushing olb’s suck”

BUT WE ARE 5th IN THE NFL IN SACKS last i checked thats pretty damn good

  17. bart,

I never said that the reason Miami has been winning is Pennington. My comment clearly states he is a motivator and has great passion and energy not only in the huddle but also on the sidelines…Our beloved Jets, are clearly missing that….

  18. uh-oh, if seneca wallace is playing- look for the fourth coming of Tom Brady

(Shaun Hill and Matt Cassel were the second and third comings)

  19. Electric.

Watch out for the total numbers, as they can be very deceptive.

Jets have 14 sacks in 3 games against Zona, Cincy and KC. Two of those teams are anmong the league’s worst and Zona is clearly overrated and probably the worst playoff team in this year’s group.

In the past 5 games, the Jets have amassed only 9 sacks. For good pass rushing teams, this could be done easily in 2-3 games.

The more disappointing stat is not just the 9 sacks, rather we have done that while the opponent dropped back 229 times!!! That’s 1 sack in every 25 attempts…that is not a defensive playoff team, especially when we got thumped two of those games and are giving up 270 yds through the air on average.

We also have been unable to succesfully stop the run, especially late in the game and even more so when we are behind.

  20. Leon Washington is our unquestioned leader on our team. He does everything that he is asked to do, and gives it 110%.

At least he never whines or complains, he has the demeanor of a man by the name of Curtis Martin, and that is some company to be with

  21. WHO IS OUR LEADER?!!!

    COME ON FARVE LOVERS!!!

    WHO IS OUR LEADER?!!!!

  22. I think that many of the players, who could normally be the leaders, are depressed from our poor coaching. When Offensive playmakers don’t get the ball, they are not happy. When Defensive players are told to play a “prevent” defense for a number of games in a row, they can’t be happy. It is up to our coaching staff to wake up. On Defense, we have to bring the pressure from every angle. It can’t be obvious. It has to be hidden. On Offense, we have to take advantage of the other team. If the run is working — run it down their throats until they stop us. If Keller is eating up their linebacker coverage — throw him the ball until they stop him. If the starting Tackle is out for Seattle — take advantage, all game long. If their defensive backfield is hurting — throw the ball down the field to Clowney. Wake the hell up – We have great players and look like crap. It is the coaches who have to turn their games around.

  23. The recievers are aging? Cotchery is 26, Keller is a rookie. You negative fans are really stretching now. Chris, the Jets will win this weekend and you can start cheering with the wind again like you were three weeks ago.

  24. Shut up saying were gonna lose to seattle. Its becoming a trend around here to be pessimistic and assume the jets are gonna blow it. Maybe youve been listening to too much joe beningo, but I for one think the jets are gonna smack the seahawks. Im sick of hearing “same old jets”. Ive been a jet fan for just as long as all of you and one thing ive learned is it doesnt help to have that negative attitude, stop feeding into the media and assuming the jets are gonna break your heart. have some fu***ng hope please

    Jets 27 Seahawks 14

  25. Thanks greg

  26. great comments harvlis! The thing that scares me with our chances of making the playoffs is our poor coaching staff. Not a fan of our coordinators, and mangini hasnt made the adjustment with the coordinators to change things! defnese more aggressive, bloitzing and more man coverage! offense inconsistent- stop doing things that work.

  27. All of you pessimist out there cant wait to be the one to say i told you so if they lose.

what is wrong with you people yea yea u say you want them to win i dont get it man

We have all seen the jets fail before but it is a two game season and i have seen this team play as good or if not better then any other Jets team i have ever witnessed. We can run the ball stop the run and have a hall of fame QB.

We WON THE BUFFALO GAME. stop acting like we didnt

The Giants barely made the playoffs last year. they squeeked out plenty of games with game winning FG’s towards the end of the season in OT, end of game etc. if the ball had bounced another way for them last year there never would have been a parade in NYC.

CUT THIS PESSIMIST BS OUT STOP THINKING YOU ARE GOD WHEN IT COMES TO FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE AND ROOT FOR YOUR DAMN TEAM

    LETS GO JETS

  28. To all those fans complaining about the performance of our players and coaches.

While I agree they need to step their performance up a level or three. I also think you negative fans are doing a poor job of being a fan. You guys need to step your game up also. You can’t complain about how poor the coaching and execution is, when you are doing an equally poor job of being a fan. Look in the mirror and improve what you are capable of improving.

If we fail down the stretch, you negative fans will be a third leg of a failed franchise, along with the coaches and players.

  29. 88Fan-

I disagree about doing a poor job as a fan. I have not missed a home game in 12 yrs, average 3-4 road trips each season, consistently make contributions via Jets fund raisers and completed my PSL.

That being said, I am a realist. And to be honest, the way the team has played- they are not capable of winning a road game where the opposing team has great coaching and the ‘nothing to lose’ attitude.

I OWE THE JETS NOTHING! To be honest it is the other way around based on my time, emotion and dollars spent. I just ask that when they take the field, the coaches and players give it all they have. And if this current, or past groups are unable to do that they we should have all the opportunity in the world to voice our concern and ask for a change.

Recently, this team grew complacent and has not been able to put 110% effort into their play, the coaches, especially on defense have done a piss poor job gameplanning and the player’s execution is terrible.

So for that, I have every right to say what I feel. And I’m not an ‘I told you so’ type of guy and can admit when I’m wrong. And quite honestly, I hope I am wrong but I have seen enough of this franchise and I don’t see a change. Woody Johnson is not a football guy. Mike Tannenbaum is not a football guy. And the more I see it, Eric Mangini is trying to be a football guy via imitation of his former boss. And Mangini needs to build his own mold. Get original and not be someone else. I hate Belichick but Mangini is clearly not him. And this team, from the front office down does not have one ounce of what the Patriots, Giants or Steelers do and to be honest, that’s sad.

I will always love this team. But I will also always criticize. If my children god forbid were addicted to drugs, or something along those lines, I would’t coddle them and say well you have a job and a nice apartment, so I’ll leave you be. No- I’d kick their butt straight and be sure changes were made to ensure their excellence in the future.

Well guess what fans, whether you like it or not- regardless of this season’s outcome, the time is not for someone to kick the butts of this team and straighten them out.

And the sadness is, that might mean the Seattle Seahawks will have to do it and then the ripples can be felt through our coaching staff and front office.

Because if the Jets can’t get up to win these next two games, then everyone you cheer and root for each week aren’t worth the paper they wipe with!!

  30. You are as good as your record says you are….

    Period.

    End of story….

  31. Amen, Electric, Amen!

  32. Are you guys kidding me? We’re 9-5 and in first place, we just swept the Bills for the first time since 2002. We are 4-1 in the division, we have the leading rushing RB in the AFC, we have the 4th best run D in the NFL, we haven’t scored this many points since 1998. We control our own destiny in the playoff race. What more do you want? I agree some things need improvement, but come on “fire Mangini”?!! I would like to see a DC change in the off season, but thats about it.

It’s hard to win in this NFL. Did anyone really think the Bills were going to lay down? I say good for us that we were able to find a way to win; just ask the Giants, Titans, Ravens, Bucs, Redskins, Cardinals, and Broncos, all teams in the playoff race that lost this week. They would gladly have won lucky.

  33. Let’s be realistic. After three AWFUL games in a row, why do we think the Jets will “snap out of it” by going to the left coast, where we have been no-shows 3 times already this year. I can understand an off game or two, but all these teams that we should be “beating up on” are giving us way too much trouble. And that’s on us, not them.

If I hear one more player say “maybe this will be our wakeup call….” Do they realize how pathetic they sound? The leadership comes first and foremost from the coaching staff, and as nearly all of us will agree, that area is severely lacking.

I think the players have no confidence in the leadership, game planning and play calling of this staff, and that’s why they look like lost little children out there.

Still, some sort of passion would be nice to see, but they’ve clearly taken their signals from their HC.

  34. Two clear-cut indictments of our coordinators:

    1) We only rushed more than 4 men a total of six times on Sunday? Against JP LoseMan? How come every other DC in league blitzes the hell out of bad/inexperienced QB’s to rattle them, but we feel content to let our porous secondary cover guys for 5-6 seconds per play?

    2) Leon Washington touched the ball twice on Sunday. Brian, it’s as clear as the nose on your face. Leon needs 10 touches a game, minimum. Where’s the creativity? Forget that, where’s the common sense?

Ultimately though, it boils down to the HC, and his loyalty to them could cost them his job. as much as I liked Mangina at first, he clearly is overmatched the last 2 years. He should insist upon developing an aggressive team, but this bunch is as passive and lost as a team can get. Starts at the top !

  35. Ham is right!@

The wheels may be out of alignment and its been a bumpy ride but let fans of our opponents pick us as losers…suck it up to the stress of being a loyal fan or GET OFF THE BUS!

  36. The jets have the players in place but the and im actually pretty ok with mangini and shotty, but Sutton must go. We need some fire and passion on defense, not a Grandpa who could tell us stories from back in the day

  37. chris, i believe we are men cut from the same cloth.

there’s nothing wrong with being a realist, but i believe being OBJECTIVE is most important.

favre lovers, where is this football god who’s amazing play and love of the game inspire and motivate everyone around him. DAMNIT FAVRE stop looking lost/scared/completely uninterested and START YELLING AND JUMPING AROUND on more than just big plays. natural team leadership should always come from your qb. period.

i think it’s funny when people get on CP. last game – up 2 td’s from TWO CP PASSING TDS going into the half. why wouldn’t you just play defensive football and finish the game. if your D is playing well, there’s no need to go out and pass and give the other team opportunities.

our jet-D is so variable it looks worst than a ADD kid’s SAT performance w/o adderrol after losing his virginity the night before.

our offensive and defensive play calling are so uninspired, that WE COULD PROBABLY HAVE A LIVE FORUM ON GAMEDAY and we’d all be able to predict the plays.

again, i’ll reiterate. I WILL RETIRE MY #10 PENNINGTON JERSEY AND GO A BUY A FREAKIN FAVRE JERSEY IF WE WIN WEEK 17 DAMNIT! GO JETS!

  38. Chris, That’s quite a resume and commitment to the team, it puts you up there with Ira.

With that said I have a glass half full perspective on our leadership and why I think we have a bright future for our team. Here’s why:

Woody – He’s trying to take us in new direction. He’s giving us the money to spend on players new and resign others (66,97,4, 25, 87…). He built our new facility in NJ, when you go there as I have (because my son lives down the road) you will see this is a world class facility. With that come expectations of excellence. And a new stadium (sorry about the PSL’s, even Rutgers has that now). As the owner he sets the strategic direction for the team, I think he’s done that, he’s not a Jerry Jones.

Mr. T – Not a football guy??? Well I don’t know if he ever took a snap but it is his life work and it has been since he and Eric worked for BB in Cleveland at least. What has he done? Re-work the O and D Lines, made the decision to win from the trenches. He’s had a few good drafts (29, 74, 60, 52, 81…), oh yes and a few misses also, MLB who wrestled wild pigs . Great work in free agency (see players above).

Eric – His team is ready every week, last year at 4-12 the team never quit on him. So he doesn’t throw down his head set on national TV, isn’t that what Brian Cox, Sutton and others are supposed to do. Does he walk on water?? NO! But teams like Pittsburg gave BC 15 years to win one SB and everyone thinks he’s god. I do blame him for not addressing the D-Coordinator this past off season and we’re paying the price for that now, but Romeo will be on the staff next year (I hope).

The team – Is fun to watch (even though you need a defibulator), it has the most talent we’ve had in years, and you can already point to areas that we need improvement in, but that takes time.

I’ll be on the couch Sunday looking for you and Ira in the Stands. We’re all in this together, Let’s Go Jets!!

  39. We have leaders ….the team gets excited but it’s this weak ass play calling that just sucks the life out of our team. Last week we were up and moving Favre was excited Jones was killing it then …. I don’t know we had no pass rush and made J.P. Losman look like Jim Kelly. Sutton should work with Rookie Quaterbacks to help develop their confidence by having them play his defense.

  40. Ham IS right! What a terrible relationship some of you have with our beloved NY JETS. I read 10 times more negatively drawn comments here than positives. Granted, not a whole heck of a lot to be positive about, but doesn’t it get downright depressing to constantly hate on your favorite team? I think we should all be happy that we won the game on Sunday, are in first place in our division, and are playing against a 3-11 team this week, but that’s just me- a guy who LIKES to LIKE his team.

  41. FAIR WEATHER FANS

  42. Great post Doug. I agree with everything you said- especially, “this team has the most talent we’ve had in years.” It’s the absolute truth! We all watched the Jets win games this year, and we all know how good this team can be when they play to their potential. I will believe that they CAN play like that again until they run out of chances.

  43. I like the negative posts here. Jets fans have to be the most negative fans in the NFL. Yes, Shaun Hill and Matt Cassell beat the Jets. Has anyone noticed that Hill is 8th in QB rating? He might’ve been third string, but he is the 49ers best QB and why they didn’t play him from the outset shows how a failed no. 1 pick at QB can hamstring a franchise. As for Cassell, he beat that “great leader” 48-28 on his home field. He’s pretty good and has great complementary weapons to throw to, like Moss, Welker and Faulk. Oh, and the “great leader” has led his team to 7 wins in the last 8 games; Favre has led the Jets to 6 wins in the last 8. Favre engineered victories over the best 2 teams the Jets faced, the Titans and Pats and lost to the third (Broncos)…2-1 against over .500 teams late in the season. The other “great leader” beat Denver, at Denver, which was the only win over an over .500 team during this streak. The only other game with another over .500 team was a 20 point home loss to a division rival.

This Jets team has plenty of leaders, it lost 2 games in a row it should’ve won, won a game it should’ve lost and now has 2 winnable games to win the division. And, if the Jets do win this weekend, that’s 10 wins, which would be an amazing turnaround but for the fact that this is the year of turnarounds: Atlanta, Baltimore and Miami are all on the way to double digit wins from double digit losses last season. This is a good team that has more good things about it than flaws.

  44. Agree with saying everyone is negative. It take steh fun out of a good season. Congrats to the Probowlers.

  45. There are three 9-5 teams in our division. Two are getting better and the one with the most talent is falling off the table. That is why some Jet fans are losing their minds and come off negative. I assure you, most Jet fans would love to be celebrating rather than bitching. A blowout of Seattle would have most of us pumped for the Miami game. Go Jets!

  46. was going to attack CA88FAN but Chris said it all, WE DONT OWE THE JETS CRAP!!!! we are not being paid to be fans you idiot!! All we do is spend out money and our time and they play pathetic football with no effort. We have the right to be pissed off when we are getting robbed. But the bottom line is being a sports fan really is a rip off. What are we doing anyway? we just root for the guys in green becasue thats what we are used to doing since we were kids. We dont care about the players because if they wer traded or are playing poorly we could careless if they are injured. So we just pay money for something to take our minds off the real world, and thats fine. But why should it cost us so much emotionally? lets just all relax take a step back and realize its just football…even if we win the superbowl who cares? Once we do that we just want another one. Im a yankee fan, and in the 90s a world series didnt eve really excite me. In the end one day we will all just realize that its just a let down, we think that a superbowl would satisfy us and everything will be great afterwords? 2 days after the title we wud just be asking “well now what is there?”. So let the jets keep sucking to make that moment last 3 days instead of 2. Sorry to get all philisophical and honest on everyone.

  47. We have a coaching staff who has this team 9-5 and we have won games @TENN and @NE. Stop bitching bout the coaching staff. I’m not a big fan of Sutton but I don’t see how the offense with Schotty is a major problem. Thomas Jones has the most rushing attempts in the NFL and people complain he doesn’t get the ball enough? A younger version of Parcells is not always out there……Mangini has been around this league enough to know what he is doing with this team. Go Jets!
