Jets Season Hinges on Seattle Game

seneca

This week, the Jets take on the Seattle Seahawks, another team potential trap team for the Jets.  Seattle has three wins, and I could easily see the loopholes in the Jets defense catching up to them as they make their last roadtrip west, from which three of the team’s five losses have come.

The Seahawks have lost a few close games this year, but the majority of the teams 11 losses have been double digit affairs.  Seneca Wallace has been filling in for Matt Hasselbeck for last few weeks, and has shown inconsistency to go along with unreliable receivers.  Namely, former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch has had a down season due to injuries.  Wallace has played half the year for the Seahawks and has eight touchdowns and only one interception, but he’s not carrying his team much this season either.  He’s showed he can manage a game, but the rest of the  team’s weaknesses have covered up any signs of a solid NFL quarterback in Wallace.

The team hasn’t had a “go to guy” in the backfield since the 2005 version of Shaun Alexander.  New RB, Julius Jones has struggled this season.  Thomas Jones’ brother and the former starter for the Cowboys will not come close to 1,000 yards this season, and has a mere two touchdowns.  Those types of numbers make me think of what his brother did last season for the Jets.  Even so, this is worse. He can be a talented running back, but the pieces are falling apart around him this season.

In addition to the offensive struggles, the team that once dominated at home with the help of the twelfth man is now just 1-6 at home, with their one win coming against the lowly Rams. This should be a great advantage to the Jets, as the Seahawks have been a team that was known for it’s boisterous home crowd. These Seahawks are no longer the yearly favorite to win the NFC West.

  1. The title of this post is incorrect, actually. The Jets’ season hinges on the game against the Dolphins way more than it does on this Sunday’s game. There are multiple plausible ways that we can lose to Seattle, beat Miami and make the playoffs. There is, however, next to NO way that we can beat Seattle, lose to Miami and still make the playoffs. The Seattle game becomes essentially meaningless for the Jets if the Ravens or Patriots lose Saturday/Sunday. The Jets’ season hinges on the game against the Dolphins.

  2. If we lose to Seattle we don’t deserve the playoffs. I thought we would rebound after the Denver loss against the niners. I was wrong. I thought we would rebound after the awful niner loss (which I was at) and take care of business against an inferior Bills team at home. I was wrong (we got very, very lucky and should have lost). I’m hopeful we will rebound after a poorly played game against the Bills in Seattle this weekend. After having 7 players and a bunch of reserves named to the pro bowl the problem is becoming more and more clear. I hate to say, because I did like Mangini, but it’s Coaching. We are a mirror image of our emotion-less, passive, complacent coach. Not one ounce of urgency whatsoever. The last 3 games have been some of the worst Jets football I’ve seen in a while… including last year. The niner game was particularly terrible.

  3. I think the defense knows that only they will carry this team into the playoffs. It depends on their play. FARVE will turn the ball at least once every game so they must be prepared just like Dallas and Romo for a long game. That is why mangini loves his substitutions on defense to shows his trust with his players. We must be patient with this defense. Jenkins already blames himself and promises to do better on his behalf for the run defense. Its obvious that teams know how to play jenkins now but he will develop each week into a better nose tackle. Ellis must be the leader he knows that he must set a better example. Pace is starting to break through with his pass rush. Harris is coming along now. What I am afraid of is these are only a few players of the front seven. I know Bowens needs more time to get his act together but Thomas (who I have always supported) is not pursuing the ball. He tries to hold his ground more and doesn’t finish. Speaking of that Barton always arm tackles. I think we should move Thomas inside and put bowens outside and then switch them on a few plays just like Ellis did last year against the Steelers when he played some outside linebacker. I would like to see Murrell on more plays please. He shows he has more drive than anyone on the field to attack. He needs to be used more often. Our secondary will come along as we finish the season. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lowery takes the majority of plays against Miami in the corner spot.

  4. Have to agree with Joe B. If the Pats lose but Miami don’t, the Seattle game (played after the NE game) becomes pretty much meaningless (the Jets would still win the division with a win over Miami and lose it with a loss to Miami).

If that doesn’t happen, then if they don’t beat Miami, winning the Seattle game will become meaningless.

(I am assuming 10-6 will not be enough to get them a wildcard).

But, if the Pats win on Sunday – THEN it becomes crucial to win the game, but the Miami game will still be more important.

  5. I agree with Joe B too, except there is not “next to now way” we don’t make it if we lose to Miami — there is no way.

Every method of reaching the playoffs involves beating the Dolphins (and very few permutations involve beating the Seahawks).

But I also agree with everyone else who says if we lose to Seattle we are not a playoff team anyway. The headline is just wrong.

  6. hold up so there is no way of making the playoffs if we lose to the phins? thats crazy

  7. that scenario doesnt show the pats and phins losing out and us beating seattle then we got 10-6 and pats/phins go 9-7, highly unlikely but it should still show that

  8. nvm phins cant lose out cuz we play them im retarded

  9. we lost to seattle and beat miami, miami loses both games and pats lose both games

  10. that is not correct

if we beat SEA and lose to MIA we are 10-6. MIA would win the division. we could get the 6th WC spot if both the pats and ravens lose out. even if indy loses out they would have the 5th WC due to conference record.

i understand technically, our season might not hinge on the SEA game. but realistically, you have to assume NE wins out and MIA wins next week. if we lose the SEA game, i believe we are eliminated under that scenario. the pats would win the division at 11-5 and we would be tied with the dolphins at 10-6. we would be dead – they have the 3rd tie breaker (common games) over the Jets.

this week is a MUST WIN

  11. bottom line – if we lose this week we need both the pats AND ravens to lose out.

this is not going to happen.

  12. The jets CAN make the playoffs even if they lose to miami. If they beat seattle and baltimore loses their last 2 against dallas on saturday and the jags next weekend and if new england loses to buffalo the jets would get the wildcard. That being said it is not as important to win the seattle game as it is the dolphins game , but if they do win it keeps more options open for the last game of the season

  13. If we lose against seattle and win against miami and NE loses one game then the jets win the division, If the jets lose to seattle and beat miami and baltimore loses to jacksonville we get the wildcard based on conference record, if baltimore beats jacksonville and loses to dallas then the jets would get the wildcard based on strength of schedule tiebreaker. There a a ton of ways in……lets just hope they do it the right way and beat up on the seattle seagulls and the miami tuna’s

That’s not true. If we lose to Seattle and beat Miami, the Patriots and Ravens only need to lose ONE of their last two. In that scenario, we’d hold the tiebreaker with all three teams at 10-6. However, this would not be the case if we beat Seattle and lose to Miami. The only way we get in if we beat Seattle and lose to Miami is if the Patriots and Ravens BOTH lose their remaining two games.

To reiterate, if either the Ravens or Patriots lose before the Jets kick off on Sunday, the Seahawks game becomes meaningless except in terms of seeding.

  15. Well why don’t the Jet’s just win the last 2 game’s and not worry about all the rest!!!!
Kinda hard to depend on help from other team’s this late in the season………………..

  16. Sorry, but the idea that NE is going to lose a must game at home to an Arizona team that has absolutely nothing to play for and mailed it in last week is a pipe dream.

  17. Maybe we will get lucky this weekend.(super bowl XL all over again would be nice)
