Did Favre Throw Mangini Under the Bus?
…or did he just try to, only to accidentally throw him under another bus going the opposite way?
Interpreting today’s coaching move in the light of comments that came out prior to the final game that Brett Favre hated playing for Mangini throws up a worrying conundrum. If Favre is staying, does this mean he now calls the shots? Or – perhaps more worryingly – does he think he does?
The Jets now face a tough decision with Favre, who I refuse to believe is ready to retire. Injury or no injury, poor coaching or not, he was not good value for the $12m the Jets paid him this year and for a team which blatantly has multiple other needs, can they afford to pay him $13m in 2009 in the hope that supposedly superior coaching will make all the difference?
I’m not even close to sure about this – any views?

Just FYI for everyone -
Tannenbaum is going to be on WFAN with francessa at 2 today
If that article is true. I hope Favre’s arm falls off. Don’t worry it can go to the hall of fame.
1 down 1 more to go….favre must go….since when do you get a pass on throwing int’s and playing terrible football for five straight weeks…this guy is done he WAS a great qb key word WAS
In between bites of the day’s sixth meat lover’s pizza, I hope Fatcessa grills him about Favre. I hate Favre. I hope he had fun. I sure didn’t. I wonder if Favre can even read. Maybe that’s the reason why he doesn’t like to “study” or “learn a system” in favor of “riverboat gambling.” I hate “boyish enthusiasm.” I prefer QBs who play with “adult professionalism,” like Manning, Brady, and the guy who took us to school yesterday. Awful, awful, awful. I hope those PSLs were worth it Woody you complete joke of an owner.
favre is way past his prime and has lost his ability to make the throws he was able to in years past. Although the man was playing injured, he wasnt making the throws he did in the earlier part of the season…
that said Mangini is an absolutely terrible coach. his refusal to play Vernon Gholston or Mangini’s belief that rushing the passer is not an option and his “trick plays” were predictable and inefficient.
The Jets havent had a great coach since Parcells was here (well technically Belichek). Bill Cowher is the perfect coach for this team and I believe he along with a new staff will create a very solid defense that can actually rush the passer.
Im just hoping Jerry Jones doesnt grab him before we do…
Favre had a terrible ‘06 and a great ‘07. Maybe with some fitness and a full preason he’ll play better. Having said that – unless they bring in a Mariucci or a Holmgren I don’t see Brett coming back.
i dont know if anyone else heard this, but im watching espn, an ANONYMOUS jets player “aired” out favre and the playcalling, saying that “we’re out there bustin our butts and favre is just turning the ball over, we are a team built to run and we should be giving it to tj to pound the ball but instead they are trying to make the playcalling to favre’s liking”…..this is no lie.
so i guess there is some truth to this spineless coaching staff
Its actually 1 down 2 to go i want coles gone as well
what a cry baby
Favre is washed up. We need to go in another direction with a QB.
Anyone who questions woody bringing in favre obviously has no business intelligence, it was the right move at the time, it just backfired. Favre may have ultimately cost mangini his job.
Im guessing it was one of the o lineman who made those comments about busting their asses. I dont blame them, I dont know why the Jets dont pound the ball like the Giants, Ravens, and Steelers do. I believe we are built in a similar mode to those teams. The jets can bring back Favre, but only if they run a ball control offense. This guy cant just be throwing the ball downfield into double coverage just to see what happens. It bothers me that I care ten times more than Favre.
Mangini had to go, but he got a bad break, I think he will be a good coach down the road.
Sutton needs to go, hes the worst d-coordinator in the league.
The jets could be in a lot of trouble, they need to figure out who their QB is going to be immediately.
Ive been watching this team all my life and thriving off the good, and being miserable from the bad and its just not fair. I love this team with all my heart and if these guys cant show that same heart then they dont deserve to be here. I cannot take another season like this. We have tons of talent on our team, this has to be turned around immediately.
I agree. Favre has to follow Mangini’s firing. Start all over and work towards 2009. This season was one I will hope to forget.
I hope Favre gets on the bus that he is driving over mangini and gets the F out of here. He and his play are a mess.
To second Jesus. I wanted Favre here but it completely backfired
I was a Favre supporter, but it’s obvious that Favre can’t play a 16-game season with the type of discipline and dedication an NFL team needs. Paying him $13 million for his on-the-field play would be a huge mistake. Improve the defense, add some weapons to the offense and make the new QB more of a game manager, until the QB proves he can do more. I believe KC could be productive in the West Coast and Ratliff in a traditional drop back, pocket passing offense. But, don’t make a 6-1 QB a pocket passer, and don’t make a 6-4 cannon-armed QB a West Coast QB.
As the regulars here know, I have flamed KC (and by extension Mangini) for drafting KC and then asking him to be Tom Brady and not Drew Brees. If he’s the choice at QB, install an offense he can run. Ditto with Ratliff (although, I believe Ratliff can step in and be productive in this offense).
Some idiot Jet fan just said he wore a Miami hat to the game yesterday. This is why I hate Jet fans
i 3rd jesus
Its really unfair how badly us jet fans suffer. I thought Mangini was the start of something special.
We can get a 4-3 coach and resign Vilma…. Hilarious
I agree with Jesus, but I would state it differently: decide what offensive system the Jets will run, then either keep or obtain the QB to run it. Gruden traditionally collects QBs and just cycles through who runs his West Coast best. Cowher won with O’Donnell, Stewart and Maddox. So, I think the system is more important than the QB.
Although I think Favre may be better than other options we may have next year, I’d rather have the 13 mil. for other moves. We need a Qb and WR. I say we get the QB through trade or free agency and get a WR in the draft. We have a good team we just need to make a few changes. How about bringing Cowher and Cassel at Qb. Cassel may not be as good as he played (because of Moss and Welker, but he can manage a game for us.
the biggest mistake the jets could make would be abandoning the 3-4. That would set us back atleast 3 years. The jets need to find a 3-4 defensive minded coach, and we can win next year. I think the jets may have been better off with clemens or ratliff down the stretch
LOL, Vilma headed up a defense that allowed 393 points. Sure, let’s sign him up, maybe we can get D-Rob back from the Broncos (448 PA), too.
What about trading for Derek Anderson? I bet the jets could get him for cheap and despite what happened this year in cleveland, we know hes talented. If we put him behind our oline, wit ha good running game, I think he will be a winning QB. Id rather see that then have Favre throwing 40 yard punts next year. What a joke
i cannot believe woody and tenn during the press conference actually saying with a straight face that they want brett back. they actually want to PAY him $12 million for 20+ picks next season?? i was waiting for one of the reporters to ask why they would want an overpaid, 40 year old turnover machine back after his dreadful performance down the stretch this , but the question never was asked. i dont get it.
have an open competition between clemens, ratliff and ainge for the QB spot. overhaul the identity of the team. turn into a smashmouth power offense. draft a tall, playmaking receiver. draft a safety and 2nd corner and depth at NG. this team is not that far away…farve returning just holds us back
We better stick with the 3-4…I hope everyone knows I was kidding with my Vilma post. Just listen to the clown Beningo on the fan.He is screaming for the 4-3. What an idiot he is
Cotchery and Rhodes were quoted as saying that if Favre wants to return he must participate in all offseason activitys, and make his decision right away. Atleast some of our leaders are holding him accountable and showing they rae not gonna let this guy dictate what happens with the team.
Jesus, who knows about KC or Ratliff being better, but I really would prefer not seeing Brad Smith behind center, again.
I only hope they don’t promote Callahan to HC. He could be a good OC, but that’s it. I also hope that they spoke with Cower, and at least got some positive feelers from him before canning Mangini. But, would Cower come here with Tanny in place?
sackdance, all im saying is I dont think ratliff or clemens would have gone for 2 TD’s and 9 int’s down the stretch. those numbers are absurd.
I dont think Cowher is coming here unless Woody tells him Mr T in the accountant of the Jets not the GM. Its a long shot. I keep hearing alot of M- Schott rumors…
Farve should not be brought back.

I bet that anonymous player was L.C.
The jets need a HC who can take advantage of their strengths. Look what Miami did with the wildcat offense, they took full advantage of their 2 talented RB’s. Meanwhile the Jets have Leon Washington, who never gets the amount of touches he deserves. We need a coach who will use our strengths. Maybe the biggest move the jets could make is landing Bill Parcells. Looks like hes gonna opt out of Miami.
i want to go on record as being completely against the notion of signing cassell.
first off, it will never happen. the pats will franchise him and either keep him if brady is not healthy (they have cap room) or trade him out of the division if brady is back to form. a team like detroit will happily hand over a high draft pick and give cassel a huge contract.
nothing would be worse than overpaying for a player like cassel and realizing he was a product of their system.
JesusRevis, I think it’s funny that Rhodes would be opening his mouth at all right now. He was a no-show almost all season. He needs to only worry about holding himself accountable and not be jawing about other players.
This all goes back to B-Schott relying on the old arm of Favre. Even when we were winning we were running the ball and Favre was throwing short passes. Once he was forced to read defenses and make smart decsions it was over. B-Schott should have adjusted but Favre let him down.
Let Favre go, tell him thanks but no thanks, you ruined one season you do not need to ruin another. Do not need a big name QB for the talent that is on this offense, all they need is a game manager who can throw the deep ball, and a tall physical WR. Bringing back Favre for $13 mil would only handcuff this team in trying to address areas where they truly need help, like the secondary.
Fellow Jet Sufferers,
All of you who want Favre gone had better recheck the contractual details. If he wants to play here, we have little choice. If we cut him and he signs with a NFC Northern Division team the penalty pill is egregious. It is so bad I forgot how many #1 picks it was.
That means either we pay him the 13 mil or we find another team to trade him to that a) accepts the liability of the poison pill which means that Favre is in the drivers seat for the duration of his contract and b) wants an aging HOF vet for probably one year, and c) if the contract has no trade provisions is a team he wants to go to or if it does not risks having him retire after giving us anything. Does anyone thing another team is that close to winning that they are that desperate except the Bears for whom we have to swallow the poison pill?
Favre is driving the car now. If he wants back we probably have to keep him on the 53 man roster regardless of what our new coach or Tanny wants.
OK Favre was terrible this year. Can anyone out there actually say he would not have played better for a more experienced coach who could look him in the eye and say you will do this my way.
As far as I am concerned, If Favre’s legacy with the Jets was to get Mangini fired, then he was worth the money.
All Mangini was going to ever be is a slow churning death.
As much as I agree with Rhodes vanishing act this year…he is a team leader who can speak for the team. Plus he happens to be right
Just a quick note….All of the 1st year coaches did as a good as a job as Mangini did in year 1 of his tenure. So please stop throwing roses at the feet of these guys. You are killing Mangini who did the same things 2 years ago.
I’m not surprised by Favre’s season at all. If you took a 40 year old quarterback who hadn’t kept himself in shape and threw him onto a new team with a new offensive system in the middle of August and then made him play a full season, you would expect him to be sloppy early on, to round into shape midseason and then to fade as the season went along. That’s exactly what happened. I wouldn’t be surprised if Favre was better next year- the conditions weren’t really in place for him to succeed this year. (The same goes for Pennington last year, I might add.)
That said, the team should in no way be building around Favre, and they should be doing absolutely everything they need to do to ensure they have competent quarterbacking available. I prefer the combination of Ratliff and Clemens to what is available from outside, and possibly over what is available in the draft. But we’ll see how Tannenbaum feels.
Thank god I am not a Mets fan. This could be a bad day.
There are some QB’s that will be available. Especially if we lose Favre’s bloated salary:
Shaun Hill
D Anderson (I like this guy and he’s young)
Kitna
JP Loshman (lol)
Plus we do have KC and Ratliff
I was overly enthusiastic when the Jets got Favre, and looking back on the deal, I hate it… it was a desperation move. Having Pennington would have been much better… now we are stuck with a QB who has no respect for chemistry…
And Cassel won’t be around now probably because Brady may not be back next year.
Yikes.
Derek Anderson completes 50% of his passes. That’s what he did in college and that’s what he does in the pros. I would much rather put Brett Ratliff out there and see what happens than pay money and/or draft picks to go get Derek Anderson. He’s simply not very good.
none of the free agent QB’s are any good. the only decent option will be if someone gets cut.
I actually love the fact that Mangini undresseed Favre in the locker in the past. He played like garbage and he should have been taken to task. I guess asking your HOF QB to not play like an ass is reason to get fired.
Forget Mangenius. Tannenbaum’s the genius. He picked Mangini. He picked Favre. He spent Woody’s money and he still has his job.
Wait ’till the MRI results show major damage to Brett’s hall of fame shoulder. Favre gets to bow out gracefully. The Jet management appears to have stood by their man. And now all we have to do is find a coaching staff and a quarterback.
Sheer elegance!
Good bye Favre. Get lost. Favre screwed Mangini. This team absolutely quit down the stretch. A bunch of soft babies. A JOKE JOKE JOKE!!!! How can you coach Favre when all he does is huck it into double coverage??? This team drives me crazy…..
Does Woody understand that any real Jet fan can see that Favre sucked?
Woody wants Favre back. All he cares about is making money…
What do you guys think about taking a run at Brian Billick?
As crazy as this may sound, the coach that would turn the Jets into year in, year out playoff participants is Marty Schottenheimer. Only problem is, he may not like the fact that his son got wacked by the Jets today, too.
Harlan:
“All of you who want Favre gone had better recheck the contractual details. If he wants to play here, we have little choice. If we cut him and he signs with a NFC Northern Division team the penalty pill is egregious. It is so bad I forgot how many #1 picks it was.”
It was three first rounders, but fear not for it only applies if Favre is TRADED to an NFC North team.
Of all that i have read here i think GuSteph has it right. At the end of the day this is business and the owner and GM while commited to having a good product are mostly committed to making money. Favre was a bonanza for them, they are not worried about 13MM to Favre, they are worried that they need to sell the seats in a new stadium under dire unprecedented economic conditions in NYC’s financial markets. Favre has two values for the franchise one is Favre the asset the other is Favre the QB. The asset or Favre brand is still worth a alot of money for this franchise. So if they already know that his shoulder is shot he will go back the GB and bcome the marketing machine that he can be for both the league and himself. Somewhere in the contract there is a cut for the Jets on that deal if they really though through what could have happened when they signed him.
You know what really kills me is i keep reading people stating that the jets have so much talent on offense. We still need an OT and OG,Multiple wide receivers because our receivers SUCK yes i said it LOUD and CLEAR,,,coles, cotchery, smith, stuckey, wright, not a one in the bunch we couldn’t live without they are average at best,,,QB anywhere to be found on this team I THINK NOT>>>>Ratliff makes the best arguement and he’s a rookie, TIGHT ENDS AND FULL BACK WE ARE SET….running back TJ above average but not great and we all now that LEON is the real deal this offense has alot of room for improvement AKA sign BOLDEN,draft on offensive guard/tackle,draft any explosive receiver aka (CRABTREE) and resign RICHARDSON to help the running game…WE are still a few players short to be spouting off at the mouth saying this team has so much talent on offense…..
i’ve got a bad feeling here because this seems to be as much about tickets and psl’s.
implying they want favre back is surprising. how this can be on mangini and not favre is beyond me, unless the marketing is what’s premium.
i hope seanmac is right, that we can hope better from favre. but my eye over the last few years tells me differently. if he’s leading, has a big time defense, he’ll manage a game and take shots appropriately. if the offense is struggles at all, look out.
i’m sure they already have an idea of who they want to bring in. football is like politics, don’t call for a revolution unless you know what you’re replacing it with.
It’s a shame about Favre because he has always been one of the most exciting players to watch in the league and this year has sullied that somewhat. I hope he plays another year for someone else (preferably an NFC team) and wish him well if he does.
I think the exchange between Holmgren and Mangini before the Seahawks game spoke volumes. It went something like this:
MH: *Gestures at Favre* He’s quite a character, huh?
EM: (uncertain) Yeah.
MH: I had him while he was still growing up.
EM: (hesitates) Ummm, so I got the revised version?
(They both laugh uneasily)
MH: Hey, good luck man, you’re doing an outstanding job.
I would sign Cassell for like 6 million a year and get rid of Favre’s 13 million dollar contract. Favre is my favorite quarterback of all time beside Joe, but he has to go, just retire man. We need Billick, or Callahan as our next coach both coaches know how to win. Billick is the best candidate short of Cowher who just stated recently that there is no chance that he is coming back.
gang green i have to disagree with you
Why do we need an OT? Woody and Ferguson both had very successful years and both will be starters next year. Unless youre implying the Jets get an OT to replace Woody in the future, then I have to say youre off on that one.
OG i would assume you want a replacement for Faneca in the future, but again I think its fair to say our OG’s are set for atleast next year. (the offensive line was never the problem)
I slightly agree with you about the WR’s, but them not getting open can also be a result of offensive game planning. There are plenty of teams in the NFL with much worse WR’s who DO get open. maybe that falls on B-Shott, who knows?
Id hardly call Cotchery average
Do you really think we need to get Boldin, AND use a high draft pick on a WR? When we just drafted a pass catcher in the first round last year? Good thing you dont have Tannenbaumb job.
“I would sign Cassell for like 6 million a year ”
I’m thinking he will probably get 10…at least.
Cassell is a product of new englands system. If the jets signed him it would set us back, guaranteed
Favre has cost Mangini his job! Chan Pennington would have won 12 games with this Jets Team and with this coach.
This Favre move was the owners move to sell seat licensing frees… nothing more.
I hope Favre retires because this owner Johnson is NUTS wanting Favre back!
Joe
i like eric,he did what he needed to do to get to the playoff his first year but after that who knows what happen.one more thing. **** brett farve he cost a man his job,f COME ON MAN! he named his son after you and you threw his job away with your GOD DAMN PICKS. 2 tds to 9 int, those are the #s you see in madden on all madden mode
YOU ALL SHOULD BE THANKING FAVRE FOR FIRING MANGINI. YES, THAT’S RIGHT FAVRE FIRED MANGINI. NOT WOODY OR ANYONE ELSE. FAVRE IS BASICALLY CALLING THE SHOTS AROUND HERE, SO YOU GUYS CAN WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT.
THE QUESTION IS WHO IS FAVRE GOING TO HIRE AS HIS NEW COACH? MAYBE FAVRE CAN COACH THE TEAM AND PLAY QB? BRING IN HOLMGREN?
ALL OF THE ABOVE?
{FAVRE IS BASICALLY CALLING THE SHOTS AROUND HERE, SO YOU GUYS CAN WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT.}
Then you can BUY my season tickets!
I will be at home from now on!
Why does Favre think anyone gives a **** if he had fun this year? This is New York City. No one here is having fun, so we don’t care if you are enjoying yourself. Leave the people from Wisconsin to have fun with you.
Farve SUCKS!!!! – - PERIOD!!!!
How many times have you seen him make stupid throws that cost his team a win. He did it in Green Bay and he continues to do it in New York. You can add two of his picks yesterday to the worst throws made in NFL history, and I bet he would be in 8 of the top 10!!!!!!
Yeah you’re right TRUPATSFAN, HE’S GOING TO BE THROWING NITERCEPTIONS ALL THE WAY TO THE HALL OF FAME.
BRADY IS A WUSS, COULDN’T EVEN MAKE IT THROUGH THE 1ST GAME OF THE SEASON LET ALONE 17 YEARS IN A ROW PLAYING THROUGH INJURIES, NOT MISSING ONE GAME.
Brett Favre is not a “real Jet”. He doesnt belong to us and never will. He doesnt care about our team.
I would prefer to ride with Kellen, or Ratliff, or even Ainge any day of the week. At least i know that they have come up through Mangini’s ranks and believe in his system. We rented Brett Favre from the Packers and it should. He doesnt care about the Jets and I hope he doesnt come back. I truely am disgusted as a Jets fan.
This is a sad day in Jets history. I really believe we let go of a good coach.
3 DAYS AGO EVERYONE WANTED MANGINI FIRED, NOW EVERYONE WANTS MANGINI BACK.
THE JETS NEED SOME THERAPY I THINK.
WHY DO YOU SAY FAVRE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT THE TEAM? THATS BS, HE WANTED NOTHING MORE TO WIN AND GO TO THE PLAYOFFS TO SHOW UP THE PACKERS, THINGS JUST DIDN’T WORK OUT. HE’S COMING BACK WITH HIS NEW COACH NEXT YEAR AND WE’LL HAVE A GREAT YEAR, CHEER UP.
King (4) Favre,
I have really never seen you on the blog before so you must be talking about other fans…
I never wanted Mangini fired. Go back and read my posts throughtout the year.
Jesusrevis who’s playing guard opposite faneca and to say Woody played good all year dude get glasses because instead of Favre getting pressure from the back side it was right in his face so he had to rush throws And to say that i could never have Mike T’s job I wouldnt want it with the way JET fans attack after every seasons demise…and who’s the pass catcher we drafted Kellen is a great tight end and if u are regarding Marcus Henry how many catches/touchdowns did he have this year????He was a 6th round draft choice and u expect him to play as a #1 receiver for the JETS anytime soon….I cant believe i am even justifying myself to your running ur mouth with no reasoning or evidence to prove me wrong DUDE THANK GOD U ARE MIKE T WE HAVE TO MOVE THE TEAM TO 1A COLLEGE BALL….
hey Jesus love the comment on CASSEL to a product of the system…I thought that was a good thing to play to the strengths of the team your on and be successful,,,SO are you trying to say cassell isnt smart enough to pick up the dink and dunk offense in NY…I take Cassel over Favre anyday atleast he is coachable, has a strong accurate arm,and plays with confidence and within the system NOT like Favre who makes up his own rules about not studying, empty back field which doesnt fit our scheme, and chuck it and F**K it attitude…Cassel can be a franchise quarter back were FAVRE can only play a few more years at best and get paid more money…i can tell you are thinking about the future of this franchise its shows in your post…
Favre did not care about winning on sunday, and you could tell. He didn’t even celebrate touchdowns.
His time has come, just as Mangini’s did.
gang green,
your coments were so stupid I didnt want to respond, but i will anyway:
The guard opposite faneca is Brandon Moore who has been nothing but solid. No upgrade necessary.
“Dude” i dont need glasses, (and dont call me dude)Woody has been playing well at RT, and since the Jets signed him to a multi year deal, dont expect anyone new at that position. Favre gets a lot of pressure because he holds onto the ball for way too long, have you noticed that yet or do you need to see him play another 17 years?
And yeah I was referring to Keller, not “Kellen” as you said (geez this guy doesnt even know the naes of the players) as the pass catcher we just drafted (Yes, tight ends are pass catchers). No i was not referring to Marcus Henry who hasnt been on the roster for months. (havent you noticed that?)
This site was a lot better when it was the real jet fans, not idiots like you running their mouths, congratulations on embarassing yourself and your credability with your last 2 posts.
As far as Matt Cassel,
unfortunately we do not have the luxury of having Bill Bellichick as our HC, so yes, I do think it would be too much for the Jets to ask Cassel to run our system. We also dont have an elite receiver like Randy Moss, or a great security blanket/underneath receiver like Wes Welker. The idea of the Jets giving a huge contract to Cassel is too risky, too much to lose.
I dont know why youre attacking me about Favre, I hate Favre, im just saying I dont think Cassel is the answer, that is my opinion. You dont have to like it. I can tell by reading your posts you are a young and inexperienced Jet fan, and I think i’m a little above your level.
Thanks for calling me “Jesus” though.
“Cassel can be a franchise quarter back were FAVRE can only play a few more years at best and get paid more money…i can tell you are thinking about the future of this franchise its shows in your post…”
Just because I dont want Cassel doesnt mean im not thinking about the future. There will be plenty of other options.
JesusRevis, gang green…none of us want to hear you argue. Please stop or I will just start deleting posts. That goes for anyone else too.
BigKatFan:
“Favre did not care about winning on sunday, and you could tell. He didn’t even celebrate touchdowns.”
I disagree, he actually looked more excited than I expected after both TDs and the two point conversion. I was expecting to see a resigned Favre and didn’t. He was otherwise terrible though and you may be right about him being washed up. Even if he isn’t and it was all down to a shoulder injury I don’t think any of use want to sit through him attempting to rehab one of those!
First of all I believe Brett when he said there is absolutely no truth to this. Second of all, they wouldn’t fire Mangini because of one player’s opinion, no matter how important or how egotistical that player might be. I think what it comes down to is this:
Who would you rather have, Eric Mangini or Bill Cowher?
Ok, now who would you rather have, Kellen Clemens/Brett Ratliff or Brett Favre?
im just defending my posts
That’s cool. Just try not to say stuff like “your post was stupid” or insinuate that the other person is “below your level” and we’re all good. I appreciate that you were responding to similar comments from him, that’s why I “warned” (it’s not really a warning) you both.
Do keep posting though, we like your posts.
hey i know this might be out there but what about giving up a 4th or 3rd roundd pick for seneca wallace who played well for a seattle team with very little weapons around him.
Mangini threw himself under the bus with his terribble Defense.
Let’s not blame anyone but Mangini for his canning. He earned it and he deserved it.
This goes back almost two yrs. Rather than pay Pete Kendall, Jets went with Adrien Clarke, with Anthony Clement as the RT and the O-line was atrocious. however Pennington became the scapegoat. #10 is among the top dozed qb’s in the league, and we dumped him for a has-been! Jets might not have won the game in New England this year, but they wouldn’t have lost the games in Oakland, Seattle or San Francisco either, had they kept CP. Favre’s ceiling was higher than CP’s but his floor is way lower, and over the course of a 16 game schedule, it showed.
To answer the original question:
Q: Did Favre throw Mangini under the bus?
A: No. Favre is the bus, and Favre ran over Mangini, and ran his ass out of town.
Now its time to bring in Holmgren, and I know he’s probably not the most popular coach around here, but he’s the guy so long as Favre is on this team. He will utilize Favre to his highest potential. (won’t overuse/underuse) While also utilizing the two powerhouses Leon Washington and Thomas Jones.
It will be a different psychology, a different attitude.
Can;t we just blame everyone? It takes a total team effort to pull off a collapse like that. I know the Mets do it every year, but with the Jets you can usually tell by midseason whether we’re going one and done in the playoffs or straight home. This season, we were talking superbowl and a month later we’re out. Even David Wright is speechless.
I’ve been a JETS fan since ‘77. I’m so use to disappointments…!!! 1982, 1986, 1998, 2004, and now 2008….. Same ‘ol JETS…..
1981, not 1982. My badd….. In ‘81, we went to the AFC Championship game and lost to Miami, 14-0. That was the infamous “Mud-Bowl”. AJ DUHE, is a name 40 + year old JETS fans, will never forget…!!!
Well I wasn’t around for the first two so I wouldn’t know, but ‘98 and ‘04 we made the playoffs and in ‘04 we beat the Chargers in the first round. I would have liked to go deeper into the playoffs in both years, sure, but if you get into the playoffs anything can happen (see: giants, 2007). Also, this team on paper is more talented than the ones in 98 and 04 which makes it that much more irritating and that much more disappointing that we didnt at least sneak in and give ourselves a chance
jet fan here since 1983
why are we suprised we suck year after year?

hey BRETTBLOWS!!!
Where are you? You must be in heaven right now. Come back to TJB so we can let everyone have it!!!!
Hank,
Brettblows is a Jets fan who hates Brett Favre so much that he made a website about it and comments made yesterday suggest that Favre will be back next year and may even be influencing personnel decisions.
Why on earth would he be “in heaven”?
Please don’t bother “letting everyone have it”, it is pointless and adds nothing to the site.
For all of you Mangini lovers…you obviously have not been watching this entire season. Brett Favre or not, he does not call the plays. He doesn’t go up to Shotty and say “hey, I really would like to throw a 50 yard bomb on 3rd and 2 to the shortest guy on the team” (no disrespect to Leon, he is great, I love him), and Favre certainly wouldn’t do that if his arm was hurting. Come on, he does not make these decisions. Nor does he play defense, so we can’t blame us losing on him. Brett Favre brings character to this team that we haven’t had in years, and may never have again. He made watching the Jets fun, and I will miss him when he’s gone. No, I won’t miss his interceptions, but I will miss his boyish enthusiasm and love for the game. With that said, Eric Mangini is a spineless coward that plays scared. We lost most of our games last year in the second half with this nonsense prevent defense…that we SUCK at! I can’t even count the ways that he is a horrible coach…did no one watch the Seattle game? Or the Oakland game, or any other game we lost for that matter, and even a few of the ones we won…like the New England game…giving up 500 YARDS OF OFFENSE, AND OVER 100 OF THEM BEING RUSHING YARDS FROM THE QB! Come on! It’s time for a change until we find the right coach. However long it takes…because Mangini was not the guy for the job. Raise your hand if you hated Pennington when he was here…that’s what I though…now everyone wishes he was our QB…Front Runners!
I am from WI and I apoligize that you had to see Favre’s true colors come playoff time. At least he didnt leave you hanging by throwing an int to finish off the NFC Championship game. I would like to see you guys get Cassell and then finally stick it too the Patriots.
