Getcha Popcorn Ready

by Bassett on December 29th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Today I was in the car and Jason Whitlock, the consummately outspoken (but often dead on) Kansas City Star columnist, was the guest host of the Jim Rome Show and he called Brett Favre after his pouting about getting questioned for his interceptions by Mangini all season… drumroll please …

“The White T.O.”

It’s amusing and maybe something of a hyperbole by Whitlock, but there’s at least a kernel of truth in it. If a professional athlete has such a fragile ego that he can’t be asked about his opponents tendencies or held accountable for mistakes made, then the coach is reduced to babysitting.

If Woody still sees Favre as the savior, boy are we in for trouble. Yes Mangini could have chosen another method, and I do think that there’s a degree to which endlessley quizzing players and preparing tests can come off as a bit pedantic to most football players, but to look at Favre as the victim here is overly simplistic.

I know it’s terrible, but I’m just hoping that his shoulder is ailing and needs surgery or he decides to walk away and we can just turn the page … either way, it’s not going to be fun or easy … guh …

Amen to that about his shoulder.

  2. avatar oscarfactor says:

The only number Woody and the FO needs to remember is 22 – as in INTs. And BF achieved this with an offense that tried to severely limit his “gunslinger” mentality! Hello! Wake up! Old, Overrated Interception Machine is only getting older.

  3. avatar DSmizzle says:

I will not make any excuses for Favre’s play, but I still think he has the ability to throw around 30 TD’s and limit his INT’s to about 15 or so.

I know that didn’t happen this year, and hoping that it will happen next year won’t make it so, I just think he still has that ability.

If you gave Favre an average game the last 5 games, he’d have his 30 TD’s and many fewer INT’s.

Chad always got the benefit of the doubt for his injuries … maybe Favre was a bit banged up later in the year?

Ideally, they give this experiment one more year, with a new coach, and tell Favre that he must prepare with the team in the offseason and have his decision made and be in shape, otherwise they’re going elsewhere …

  4. avatar vajet says:

making the CS liable for the end of this season is reasonable.

saying favre brought some positive things to the team is frightening.

i am truly worried already about our 2009 season.

WOODY! STOP THINKING ABOUT THE MONEY AND YOUR BUDDY FAVRE AND THINK OF YOUR PLAYERS AND FANS!

  5. avatar kc. says:

wwasnt manginis fault…Favre SUCKED it up ALL season!

  6. avatar md says:

Certainly Mangini made mistakes that kept this team from being as good as it should have been, however, it would be difficult to believe that even marginally better QB play would not have amounted to one or two more wins and the division title.

  7. avatar nyckage says:

it would be funny if parcells hires mangini as D coordinator and kills our offense next year, its good though , he can get a little more NFL experience on him, but we need change, how do we lose 4 west coast games, that’s bad coaching

  8. avatar Kman says:

It wouldn’t be horrible to have Favre back another year and pick up a QB in the draft this year, let him develop a year, then plug him in for 2010.

  9. avatar DSmizzle says:

They took a huge gamble on Favre and year 1 didn’t pan out. Get over it.

The question you should be asking is whether there is a QB out there, who the JETS can realistically sign or trade for, who is better than Brett Favre?

I’m not seeing it and I have nightmares of the JETS’ brass watching Cassel throw to Wes Welker and Randy Moss and expecting similar results with the JETS.

  10. avatar kd bart says:

Heard on ESPN that Cowher is willing to listen to the Jets. It’s a start.

  11. avatar nyckage says:

its official guys we have the 17th pick which ain’t all that bad, but i reckon we gonna trade up

  12. avatar DSmizzle says:

And Bassett, I’m not saying get over it to you or any other JETS fans in particular on this blog, I’m just saying that we have to put this crappy, awful year aside to the extent possible and make an objective analysis of whether there is a better option for next year.

What-if’s are fun, but they released Chad Pennington after trading for Brett Favre. We are here now.

  13. avatar Steve in China says:

I agree with you, Bassett. Favre must go along with Mangini! Yes, the coaching staff was the single biggest reason why the Jets failed to make the playoffs this year. Our team (on paper) is pretty darn good. Yet, to place all of the blame around Mangini’s shoulders is also wrong. There is more than enough blame to go around for everyone! Certainly, Favre was no hero or savior. Not anymore. I’m with you in hoping that Favre’s shoulder makes him walk away. I do NOT want to see Favre as the starting QB next year! Who’s better? According to his season-ending QB rating, LOTS of people! For one, I think that there is a real possibility that Ratliff could develop into a QB who is at least as good or better than Matt Cassel in New England. Why not give him a chance? He can’t do worse than 22 INTs! While I peacefully accepted Mangini’s firing with resignation and cautious optimism, I was sorely disappointed to know that both Woody and Tannenbaum enthusiastically WANT Favre to play for us again next year! Do they really think that he would have played THAT much better in 2008 under a different coach? They need to wake up. Favre is not a bum, but he is also definitely NOT the answer for the Jets next year, (much less beyond that.) What Woody said about Mangini is equally as true for Favre. It’s time to “go in a different direction.”

  14. avatar swizzle81 says:

I’d use that 17th pick on the secondary. Good points Bassett, hopefully his shoulder requires a long rehab and stops him from coming back next year.

  15. avatar Nikolas says:

    The best possible three moves!!!
    1. Fire Tannenbaum
    2. Fire Favre
    3. Hire Cowher

Only then we will have a 2009 season.

  16. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

FLASH: Bill Cowher who turned down the Browns, has agreed to interview with the JETS. I would say with a daughter attending Princeton, the odds are very high that Cowher will be the JETS new Head Coach. Not that I saw into the future, but my “DUMP MANGINI! HIRE COWHER!” chant looks pretty good as of this point.

As to Favre. Brett played hurt the last 5 games. And Favre wasn’t the reason Mangini got fired. Eric got fired because his Defense stunk the last 5 games.

  17. avatar Ed L says:

i wouldnt put it all on favre…..

the jets coaches put the game on favres arm instead of TJ and Leon’s legs…

the one reason y we aren’t playing the ravens this weekend….

  18. avatar junior says:

doesnt cowher want full control though?

  19. avatar King (4) Favre says:

“”If a professional athlete has such a fragile ego that he can’t be asked about his opponents tendencies or held accountable for mistakes made, then the coach is reduced to babysitting.”"

MANGINI WAS NOT A COACH, MANGINI WAS A MOTIONLESS STATUE WITH A STUPID LOOK ON HIS FACE. I’M GLAD FAVRE DECIDED TO FIRE MANGINI. MANGINI IS UNPROVE, AND HE’S NOT EVEN OLDER THAN HIS QB…….BRING IN A REAL COACH TO NY.

  20. avatar nyckage says:

I really hope Cowher can work with Mike T, because we all know Mike is gonna be here for a while, but It would be funny if Cowher says to Woody ‘ Fire Mike T and I”ll join the Jets” oh man how many of you guys think woody has the balls to do it. But Mike T isn’t all that bad as I said a hundred of times look at his resume

Mangold, D Brick ( I can say that proudly now), LW, Revis, Harris, Stuckey ( not great but worth the 6th Rd pick) Lowery 9 who is a project, but he might be converted to safety, which don’t seem like a bad idea) and Keller and I think VG will be a star

  21. avatar pkpiazza says:

so did they fire Sutton and shotty?? cause i heard tht but there havent been any reports on it

  22. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    Nikolas,

Hire Cowher – Absolutely! Fire Favre – Maybe? But, Fire Tannenbaum – ARE YOU NUTS?!!!

    Let’s Vent!

    Dean

  23. avatar leons legs says:

anyone have the link to the firing of shottenheimer and sutton?>

  24. avatar junior says:

so mortified by the whole season i dont know what i want

  25. avatar Freeman24 says:

Cowher is the only ray of hope on this black day in Jet fan history.

He won’t put up with the Favre BS and more importantly he’ll keep us in the 3-4 and get that unit to the next level. He fits in perfectly with the power running attack we should have focused on all year if not for the Favre BS.

With a lack of other options, lets hope Tanny had this in the works before making the move to cut Mangini. It would make me feel a lot better about the future with this Owner/GM.

  26. avatar jay says:

im glad fat boys gone did you see his face during the game yesterday a deer in the headlights, see ya fatty

  27. avatar nyckage says:

I don’t think the jets want to go back to the 3-4, that would make the Vilma trade almost useless, lets say we go back to the 3-4, what then? Calvin Pace is better suited for the 3-4 as a LB and BT sucks as a DE, well I would like to see VG as our Right DE but then we have no one at DT next to KJ, but people let’s get rid of Barton please, I don’t like him and he might ask for too much money anyway, which opens up room to resign LW, I hope Favre retires not because of his play ( but hats the main reason I want him out) because we get some needed cap room for free agency and the Draft
    BTW

WHO IS ON YOUR LIST FOR THIS YEARS DRAFT?

    mine is Malcolm Kelly
Law was a bad idea and Lowery is once again better suited for safety, he’s like Eric Smith and Ab Elam combined, but more leaned to smith, that way he will get more picks

Also we need a QB and a WR

  28. avatar Jake says:

You know what I call Jason Whitlock? A racist. What does the color of T.O.’s skin have to do with anything?

  29. avatar junior says:

honestly espn is saying that bryan schottenheimer might be a choice for the jets and if he becomes the head coach of the jets i am no longer a fan of this team

  30. avatar nyckage says:

    junior,
woah man , the Jets were just finished talking about change I don’t think they will let Schotty run the show

  31. avatar hank/naples says:

You see FARVE and Mangini held different values for the JETS!!! Mangini brought in his values and his philosophy in 2006 and then FARVE brought his values to the team for part of 2008. Guess FARVE was bigger than the team and he won in destroying the Jets. His values do not compare to Mangini and that is why there was so much tension in the clubhouse. Mangini what you did for this team in the duration that you coached and what foundation you laid for this team is truly remarkable. I hope you succeed wherever you go and if the Jets and you clash in the future I hope that what happened to Chad Pennington is nothing compared to what you will do to us, I hope you win a Super Bowl if you coach again with the right owner and organization.

  32. avatar junior says:

    just said it on sportscenter

  33. avatar JD says:

We have a shutdown corner in revis, a top NT in Jenkins, pay Leon the profits of the PSLs, another year of T.J. behind this same OL, Lowery and Keller in their second year –

we have alot to look forward to in ’09

  34. avatar Nostra says:

    Cower in
    Crennel DC
    Billick OC
    Ratliff QB

  35. avatar Steve says:

So now that Mangini is gone, it’s all Favre’s fault? I thought Mangini was supposed to be the scapegoat? It seems to me that the entire team and coaching staff – Favre and Mangini included – deserves equal blame for this ridiculous breakdown. Brett Favre couldn’t carry this team the way we thought he would, but he didn’t singlehandedly destroy this team. He’s still just one player.

  36. avatar EastSideKahaluu says:

Cowher will be hard to coax out of retirement. Also, not sure that I’d want a HC that comes in with that enormous amount of pressure to succeed.

nyckage, I agree that if Cowher were to come here, he’d make Gholston into a star. A slightly bigger James Harrison? chills, dude.

Woody Johnson’s ownership of the team has been categorized by greed and an acute inability to make good decisions. Woody’s more concerned about his pocket book and political friendships than the New York Jets. For the Jets to win he either needs to relinquish ownership or get his hands out of the cookie jar. Mangini might have been the one to blame for the past two seasons, but everyone remembers who hired him.

  37. avatar kd bart says:

What professional sports ownership, except the Green Bay Packers, could not be categorized as being motivated by greed? This is a business and they all want to make money.

  38. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

All you young-uns don’t remember when Don Shula, a failure who had recently lost SB3, interviewed for the Fish job. He called around the league and a number of personnel folks said a moron could win with all that talent. Well he proved them right (and Namath’s crippling injuries sure helped).

Well, I think if anyone might want to take over a team in ’09 or ’10, and if they called around the league, I think they would hear that the Jets job was a winner. The fans are lousy and the media in NYC are inept, lazy, and mean spirited. But there is a lot of talent on the roster.

Compare this opportunity to the one offered by the Lions, Browns or Raiders. Would you rather work for Woody or Al? Do you want the roster of the Lions or Jets? Do you want the budget of the Browns or the Jets?

I have no idea if Cowher would be a good fit for us. But he will not have as big a chance as this in the next two years in terms of getting a chance to get a team with only two or three big holes (QB, CB, S and maybe a fast WR). Even discounting Favre, we had 6 Pro Bowlers.

We are such perennially disappointed fans, we sometimes cannot see the forrest for the trees. I think if a new coach can find a decent QB in time for OTAs with two good draft picks, we should be able to plug two of the other three holes).

    harlan

  39. avatar jlwells5 says:

“What professional sports ownership, except the Green Bay Packers, could not be categorized as being motivated by greed? This is a business and they all want to make money.”

    FC Barcelona for one.

  40. avatar steviek says:

    back to bassett’s post….
what happened to favre’s “i want to be treated just like everyone else.”
yeah, right. guess that lasted all of 2 months.

  41. avatar Steve says:

Harlan, I agree this would have to be the most attractive landing spot for a coach, and from what they’re saying on ESPN it sounds like Bill Cowher has already told the Browns no but is “willing to listen to the Jets’ offer though he already has a job” (In other words, he wants the Jets to offer him more money and he’ll come). So that would be a pretty clear indication of where the market is at least. Also, I believe Bill Cowher runs a 3-4 whereas Steve Spagnuolo runs a 4-3, and if that’s the case we could probably save ourselves a whole transition year by giving Cowher whatever he wants.

  42. avatar Jetsetter says:

I thought Favre had an MRI today? Any word? Hope it is broken!! The only reason the firing came so soon is that Tannenbaum has his sights on two people, Parcells or Cowher! There is no one else!

  43. avatar Jonathan says:

so if we end up hiring spags, what becomes of our hard-earned 3-4 talent? can he coach a 3-4 or does he pull a u-turn? my sense is that this is why we don’t end up with spags.

part of me thinks that tanny wouldn’t have fired his friend had he not formulated a superior succession plan, which encourages me about cowher, whom we are uniquely positioned to pay extra for not having GM duties.

also, keep an eye on rex ryan (one of the seemingly few, gettable 3-4 coaches not currently tarnished). also, a billick/nolan ticket wouldn’t surprise me.

i have a hard time buying that tanny believes schotty deserves a promotion. i’d much prefer more mangini than schotty. i wish coach mangini all the best, as i still think he’s a rising star and a seemingly good guy.

  44. avatar junior says:

Nostra- would love that coaching tree would be a dream

    cowher-hc
    crennell-dc
    billick-oc
    westhoff-st
    Ratliff-qb

superbowl bound with this staff probably even psl salesif you can believe that!!!

  45. avatar Steve says:

I hope you’re kidding about Ratliff. He had a good preseason but that doesn’t mean anything. It’s Favre, Clemens, or someone who isn’t with the team right now

  46. avatar Bent says:

Spagnuolo doesn’t run a traditional 4-3 (just like Lebeau’s 3-4 is slightly different to Belichick’s.

They do use converted DEs (ie Pace, Gholston, BT) as outside linebackers as well as at DE, so maybe it would suit our personnel. However, the one guy who might not be a good fit? Jenkins.

A traditional 4-3 would be a nightmare to transition to because they have NO 4-3 linebackers. Barton is a free agent, Pace, BT, Bowens and Gholston are all 4-3 DEs. Even Harris bulked up this year, so he would likely lack the speed required to be effective.

This team has enough needs already. Fortunately, if Spags is the answer (which it is of course far too early to say), it won’t quite be as difficult to fill these as it might otherwise have been, but it would be ambitious to expect immediate results.

  47. avatar Steve says:

If Jenkins is the only problem I wouldn’t rule out Spagnuolo just for him, Jenkins looked just as bad physically as Favre did the past few weeks. I wonder about David Harris and Bryan Thomas though

  48. avatar junior says:

I think that Ratliff will be good!!!

  49. avatar Bent says:

If the successor is already lined up and is someone attached to a team still in the playoffs (which I guess would be Spags, Parcells or someone nobody has thought of yet), would they need to keep this under wraps until that team was out otherwise they could face tampering charges or maybe have to give draft pick compensation?

Don’t forget also that the position cannot be filled until they have interviewed at least one black candidate under the Rooney Rule.

  50. avatar junior says:

Does anyone else find it strange that when the jets got parcells from the jets and they were going to give him some title called president of football operations special executive blah blah and lost beilchek to the patriots now what do you know parcells has that title now and belichek is the only coach alive with 5 superbowl rings

These are some of the reasons why being a jet fan is so hard.
    every year they kill me

Please woody bring stability to this franchise

  51. avatar Steve says:

Yeah if they haven’t said a word about it by the time the superbowl comes around or the giants are eliminated, I’d take that as a pretty big hint though.

  52. avatar junior says:

There was a new exception added to te rules your allowed to interview candidates who are on a buy week

  53. avatar Steve says:

Oh that’s right, Gilbride was mentioned for the Raiders job, so I guess they could talk to Spagnuolo now if they wanted to. I have a feeling they’re set on Cowher though

  54. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

COWHER is the MAN! And I am ure Woody talked to Cowher or his agent before canning Mangini.

  55. avatar section133 says:

Woody Johnson is DESTROYING this franchise for the sole purpose of selling PSL’s. First he brings in Favre which was a monumental disaster. I hope Favre can sleep tonight knowing that his horrible play has cost a solid young coach his job. At this point Woody is doing anything possible to create the illusion of a “winning” organization. Favre was the catalyst of this horrible season and Mangini took the fall.

Eric good luck, without the turnover machine himself Brett Favre you will continue developing into a a great coach.

  56. avatar Steve says:

Knowing what we did at the time, it’s hard to blame them for making the Favre deal. I don’t think anyone expected Chad Pennington to play this well, much less play all 16 games and more. Besides, as much as Brett stunk it up the last few weeks, so did Kris Jenkins, Darrelle Revis, Calvin Pace, Ty Law, Laverneus Coles, Dustin Keller, etc, etc… no to mention the playcalling was at times ridiculous

  57. avatar Dan says:

ESPN is reporting that Cowher will listen to jets offers as head coach

  58. avatar BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER says:

It appears the Newsday report that BSCHOTT and SUTTON were canned has been redacted. IMHO, the OC is the biggest culprit in the Jets collapse. The schemes were absolutely terrible (except for the first drive of the games). If I have to sit through another year of the Jets going to the spread on 3rd and 2 I’M GOING TO FRIGGIN’ LOSE IT (I wrote in caps so you know I mean it).

It’s a shame too because I think M. Schottenheimer would be the perfect coach for this team. He is a run-first, no-nonsense coach who will tell Favre where to stick it. If he was teamed with Callahan and Crennel, that would be a dream coaching staff. However, there is no way he comes in and his son gets canned.

  59. avatar junior says:

    100% agree steve

Favre looked old and it showed but we knew we were getting a massive risk taker on the field with reward
The defense looked good in the first miami game blitzing from everwhere then it slowly di gressed

  60. avatar Steve says:

Nice, that’s the best news I’ve heard since we got Brett Favre! …Yay? Oh well gotta keep hoping maybe this time it’ll actually work. If the Dolphins and Falcons are in the playoffs I guess anything could happen.

  61. avatar Steve says:

(i was referring to Dan’s post btw)

  62. avatar Dan says:

Its simple cowher runs the 3-4 and the jets have the personell he is listening to offers its going to cost a lot but its worth it we want emotion on the sideline and he will give us every bit of non whining eric mangini emotion

  63. avatar Steve says:

and yeah, junior, it is a risk/reward thing, which is why I hope he comes back even after all this. Best case scenario, he comes back healthy and plays like he did last year. Worst case, if he can’t play anymore, we let him go and go with Clemens which is what we’d be doing anyway

  64. avatar junior says:

If we get cowher we need to get crennel,R Ryan,or a lebeau prodigy to run this defense!!!!!!

  65. avatar Steve says:

We’d get a big lift from The Chin’s star power alone, so yeah, it’s settled then. BRING IN THE CHIN!

  66. avatar kd bart says:

The next coach, unless it is Marty S., will not retain this staff. but it is his decision. He’ll select his own staff.

  67. avatar bruce says:

    solid young coach?

Did his team seem to rally?

    ‘Nuff said.

Favre is Favre. He is a bad ass that has has a career far, far beyond any of his teammates. And they are hungry to learn.

New coach, keep Favre around for a year to groom a new QB, and you guys might get somewhere.

  68. avatar jas says:

Are you kidding? They kept Sutton and Shotty.
You just can’t make this crap up. Had to fire Mangini as team just plain stunk, but to keep the two idiots is unbelievable.

  69. avatar Bent says:

I don’t think they *kept* Schott and Sutton, they just left their status in the hands of whoever the new headcoach is (which is probably the way it should be). There may be guys on the staff that the new coach wants to retain. Highly unlikely that either coordinator will be on that list, but we shall see.

So, if those two are coaching, it won’t be Woody or MT that kept them, it’ll be the coach. Again, it’s right that the coach makes that decision.

  70. avatar kd bart says:

    Bent,

I believe they do leave that to the next HC to decide. See if he wants to retain anyone. Most might retain 1 or 2 and dismiss the rest.

  71. avatar jas says:

    Thanks Bent-
I guess I’ll just keep praying we hire someone more qualified than the Division AA crew we’ve had.

  72. avatar Steve says:

Yeah they’re just there on paper for now, Brian Schottenheimer would stay if his dad came in as head coach, otherwise you can count on both of them being gone

  73. avatar BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER says:

    jas

I imagine that Sutton will officially be fired soon (I really think that is just a matter of time). Schotty, on the other hand, I’m not to sure. They may be keeping him to give the next coach the option to keep him, or Woody may want save poor Favre from having to learn another offense. In which case, he will either have to find a HC who will agree to keep Schotty or a HC who must keep Schotty as a condition to getting the job.

Remember Woody kept mentioning that they have good personnel in place-that could mean Schotty or Sutton or both.

  74. avatar junior says:

yeh westhoff should stay on as the special teams coach
and callaghan should stay on as an o line coach!!
    Fire Sutton asap

  75. avatar jas says:

If Shotty is still here with or without Dad I’m truly done. That leaves you guys to deal with Hank/Fonzie/Idiots by yourselves.

  76. avatar junior says:

God please bring me the chin and crennell!!!!!

  77. avatar Steve says:

If they wanted to save Favre having a new offense I think they’d be better off bringing in someone who runs the same kind of offense he ran in Green Bay. However, I think that’s just about the last thing they’re worried about right now. Even with Brett, his arm is a much bigger concern than the system at this point.

  78. avatar BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER says:

    Bent, kd bart etc,

I agree that the could be the case but it is not unheard of for a new HC not to have that choice. Just look to the recent history of the Cowboys. Garrett was hired before Phillips and Phillips had no say in the matter.

All I’m saying is that no one should assume that Woody will not demand that Schotty is back next year, especially if Favre returns.

  79. avatar jas says:

    I’m going to throw up.

  80. avatar BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER says:

    Steve,

I agree that a well-run/rational organization (or even a decent organization) would worry first about his arm. Unfortunately, we root for the Jets. I was sickened by Woody’s commitment to Favre today.

  81. avatar kd bart says:

I don’t think the type of coach they want would agree to that.

  82. avatar Steve says:

The difference is, Jason Garret was the “coach-in-waiting” and their owner also makes their personnel decisions. No reason to think Schottenheimer would get that kind of special treatment.

  83. avatar Steve says:

Oh that’s right, we do root for the Jets. Man. That sucks.

  84. avatar Steve says:

Well now ESPN is saying the Jets have requested permission to interview Spagnuolo

  85. avatar Sammy G. says:

    Holmgren & Favre = playoffs

    Mangini = epic failure

  86. avatar Bent says:

I agree with these guys, but at the end of the day we’ll just have to wait and see. They let Mangini pick his own staff, so I’m sure they’re just taking the same approach.

It would be remiss of the new guy to not at least sound these guys out even if he has no intention of using them and maybe they will be able to convince the new guy (or girl…you never know) if there were extenuating circumstances. (ie “I wanted to blitz more, but coach Mangini told me not to” or “I wanted to run the ball more in short yardage, but coach Mangini insisted on empty backfield sets”) I highly doubt this, but they might be able to get some useful information from him about what did and didn’t work.

  87. avatar junior says:

The first choice has to be cowher
then ughh marty S. then spags i want a guy who runs the 3-4 get R. Ryan or crennell to run the d and Billick to run the offense and i dont care who the face of the team is

  88. avatar swizzle81 says:

Please no Marty, 5-12 playoff record, no thank you. No way Cowher is coming to NY, with Tanny as GM, so I do not know why everyone keeps mentioning him. Spags doesn’t run a 3-4, so it would seem odd the Jets would want to interview him, the Jets do not have the pieces for a 4-3 defense.

  89. avatar swizzle81 says:

Holmgren & Favre= huge disappointment and unhappy ending

  90. avatar Dan says:

spags runs a hybrid 4-3 with mostly defensive ends turned into lb’s and we have a whole mess of those kind of guys so it might work out

    WARNING…..WARNING….WARNING…A word to the wise:

Be careful for what you wish for because you may get it.

    Wanted Brett farve……. Got it

    Wanted mangini fired…..Got it

What’s the next wish fellas ?

  92. avatar Steve says:

Um…in that case…I wish we DON’T make it to the superbowl next year

  93. avatar Steve says:

Oh no wait it wasn’t the opposite of what happened it was just ironic because it was exactly what we said we…and…oh, nevermind, just ignore my previous comment

  94. avatar oleosmirf says:

the Jets need a well-known highly respected guy to run the team. How often was Herm or Mangini just awful in managing the game??

I think Cowher is easily the best option but whether he wants the job or not is another story…

  95. avatar Steve says:

Hey let’s not lump Herm in with Mangini. I miss Herm.

  96. avatar BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER says:

You would take Herm over Mangini? You are kidding I hope?

  97. avatar Steve says:

Hey that’s it, let’s bring Herm back! We’re gonna suck anyway, so we might as well go for fun sucky instead of depressing sucky

  98. avatar 57JETSBLITZ says:

No Cohwer Turned down Cleveland and will not coach in ’09

    M. Shot. Fired his son fuhgetaboutit

Brian Billick Hasn’t turned the job down yet?

Spaggs Three years hard labor, flipping the roster.

    Knee jerk reaction, firing Mangini

Better have a plan Woody, you know what I’m sayin?

  99. avatar Steve says:

I was kind of joking, but yeah, actually, I would

  100. avatar Sammy G. says:

Woody has to know that who he picks for head coach will have a huge impact on if Favre returns. He’s be stupid if he didn’t realize that. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out…

  101. avatar BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER says:

Yeah who does Favre hate, the Jets should hire that guy. Maybe the guy who stole Favre’s girl in high school.

  102. avatar Steve says:

I don’t think what Favre wants should have anything to do with this. I’d like to see him come back for one more year just because it’s either Brett Favre or Brett Rattliff, but if he doesn’t I won’t be losing any sleep over it.

  103. avatar Sammy G. says:

    lol @ blame.

I know most people hate this, but just about every decision that is made about this team, in some way will have Favre’s shadow.

  104. avatar junior says:

Good if thats the case at least bring me holmgren or mariucci in

  105. avatar BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER says:

Favre does really add another element to this imbroglio. Whether he comes back could affect a coach’s decision to take the job. I personally think it could also affect other personnel choices. The decision would be a lot easier with that guy under center for the Dolphins.

  106. avatar Steve says:

Well, keep in mind that guy under center for the Dolphins ended up literally under center for the Jets quite a few times. I think either one of those guys would be risky enough to make a new coach want to draft a quarterback. Don’t forget, The Chin stole Ben Roethlisberger late in the first round after the Giants passed him up for Eli “waaahhh i dont wanna be a charger” Manning

  107. avatar Steve says:

Oh yeah and they still had Tommy Maddox, and I think it’s a pretty close comparison between Maddox then and Chad now

  108. avatar TheGreenCastle says:

I gotta say, having been at the game (first time, w00ts), Favre looked pretty terrible. Two of the three ints were so bad I was screaming while he was still in the windup. And his accuracy seemed off – even completions seemed not quite right.

I think Matt Cassel’s success in NE (albeit with a great supporting cast) shows the importance of consistency (on the coaching side) and coachability (from the player). With Favre here and Mangini gone we have neither.

  109. avatar Feitman says:

You gotta fire schotenheimer. Qbs just don’t flourish in his system. Last year Pennington and Clemens threw for a combinedd 19 picks–just three below favres total for this year. Pennington even threw for 16 picks on ’06, with a touchdown to interception difference of +1. That’s averaged to 19 picks over the past 3 seasons–There’s something wrong with that.

  110. avatar Lafflin says:

As a 30 YO lifelong fan I have stuck with this team through good and bad….and worst.
I have never wated to see them get beat prior to this weekend. I’m very glad CP got to have his day, it’s been a real Cinderella story.

It’s scary to hear Woody, or fans give any credit to Favre or to welcome him back next year.
This thing has blown up in our faces, we’re truely something to be laughed at right now, the only way to move forward is to find a new QB. Personally I like Ratliff.
Any QB this year would have been better than Favre. It’s not like we didn’t know he was the all time INT leader, it’s not like we didn’t know he was 39. We got exactly what we asked for, exactly what we deserved. And if we’re stupid enough to ask for it for another year then we deserve it.
Can someone go ahead and add some Favre/Chad clips to the end of that draft blunders video please?

  111. avatar Sammy G. says:

    Good point feitman.

I’m not sure on the figures, but we had way too many sacks allowed as well. The O-Line needs to get upgraded, we need them to allow our QB the time to make a good decision.

Wide receivers also are subpar. Jericho can’t catch-ery, and Coles are not creating any separation, and in some cases they’re not completing their routes.

Plus horrible coaching and play calling, not utilizing Jones and Washington, was a major failure.

All have contributed to the INT’s of the last 3 years.

  112. avatar jas says:

Feltman got it right about Shotty’s system. If only Hank/Fonzie could read they might learn something.

  113. avatar Brett Favre says:

Look guys, I know there’s some things that I could have done better, some throws I would like to have back and what have you.
I think what’s important here though is that I had fun, we all did. It’s not just about winning.
I think it’s important to understand three things:
    1) We had fun.
    2)We sold tickets.
3)I had another pro bowl year, and brought six others with me.

That guy down there in Miami might have won a few more games, but I’ll bet he put a lot of pressure on himself, and I’ll bet he didn’t have as much fun as I had. I don’t mean to compare myself to anyone, but I am going to Honolulu, and I did get six other of us there.
Now, I know I still have a few good years in me, and I’m a champion. Champions get back in the pocket and throw another pass. They don’t take a sack or throw the ball away just cause a reciever might be covered. These guys are pros, you gotta give them a chance to go up and fight the defenders for the ball.

Look, I already spoke to woody and I’ll be back next year. He’s promised to get me a fast reciever that can really open the field up long. We’ll be a really exciting team and I’m already looking forward to it.

  114. avatar lafflin says:

Seriously? Our line and recievers aren’t good?
I’m just going to have to disagree without even going into it.
We’re doing pretty good in both those areas though.
To say otherwise is the same mentality that got Chad run out of town.
I moved here about a year ago, as a lifelong fan I was very excited to see Jets at hoffstra in the summer.

One thing I noticed is that there was a stigma about Jets fans. I would hear things like “typical Jets fan” and things like that when I heard someone say something stupid or cheer their injured QB off the field.

Let’s not propigate that stigma please, let’s appreciate what we got. Let’s learn from kicking CP to the curb.
To illustrate my point: is there anyone here that thinks that CP would be in Miami if he had the support from Jets fans that Favre did from GB fans? NO, he wouldn’t.

Our line is elite, our recievers are very good, perhaps we could use a speed guy, maybe clowney is it.

  115. avatar Sadfan says:

Everyone who says no one expected chad to play this great… I DID.. THIS TEAM HAD BAD O LINE FOR YEARS AND CHAD WOULD GET HURT N ROUGHED UP.. ITS NOT LIKE THE GUY INJURED HIS SHOULDER TWICE JUST BY THROWING IT.. NO HE WAS ABUSED ON THE FIELD MAN!! THEN THEY ADD THE FINISHING TOUCH WITH FANECA AND TELL CHAD TO HIT THE ROAD??

I DONT CARE I RATHER HAVE CHAD DINK N DUNK THEN A GUY WHO THINKS HE IS PLAYING MADDEN N JUST CHUCKS THE BALL UP AT WILL NO WAY.. I DONT CARE WHO U ARE 22 INTS IS NOT GOOD.. LIKE MAN THE GUY IS NOT EVEN CLOSE ON THESE THROWS ARE U KIDDING ME?

CHAD HAS NO ARM NOODLE ARM BLAH BLAH HE CANT GET THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD….THEY FREAKING PLAY CALLING WAS NEVER EVER DESIGNED TO GET THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD….IM GLAD CHAD WON ITS LIKE A F U RIGHT IN MANAGMENTS FACE… THOMAS JONES WAS A HORSE THIS YEAR AND U MEAN TO TELL ME THAT CHAD COULDNT JUST RIDE THAT HORSE AS WELL.. N MIX IN THE PLAY ACTION AND SHORT PASS… LIKE COME ON MAN

CLOWNEY NEEDS IN.. TRADE FOR CALVIN JOHNSON IF THE LIONS ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO GIVE HIM UP.. WE NEED A TALL STRONG RECIEVER
