Just reported on Bloomberg as well. Even though this year was dismal, I’m still quite surprised.
I have also seen it reported on the NFL Network (Adam Schefter) that he’s confirmed Mangini has been fired.
This is the best news a JETS fan can hear today. Even better would be bill cowher as next head coach.
i predict we get schottenheimer senior to replace him. wants to coach with his son. just a guess or maybe wishful thinking.
By the acquisition of “gunslingin’” Favre — who clearly didn’t fit Mangini’s system — this owner has proven he is more interested in selling PSLs than anything.
And like Chad, who was kicked to the curb in the name of selling PSLs, no doubt Mangini will go off and be successful somewhere else while the Jets continue to flounder.
And we’ll be saying the same thing next year, next decade, next century: Same old Jets.
i am as well….slightly. has to mean woody has reached out to cowher….
i am impressed that it happened this fast actually.
i like mangini…..his coordinators sucked, but he was responsible for them. they have alot of talent…..and the players were clearly not happy with the coaching.
to lose 4 of 5…which really could have been all 5…. especially the way they did…..would cost alot of coaches their jobs.
Merry f!@#ing xmas! Oh happy day oh happy day. My beloved Jets made a GREAT move. Please don’t be yanking my chain.
Not happy….. and I’m suprised
This is a mistake. It really is.
The 2008 JETS team clearly underperformed. Earlier this year I said good caoaches can make average teams great and poor coaches can make good teams bad. Clearly Mangini in my opinion was a poor coach and I am very happy that woody wasn’t drinking any mangini cool aid when he made the right decision.
EPSN just confirmed it also Mangini is history,,,Cant say I didn’t see that coming…and as i also posted last night sooner rather than later but 1 day after the loss WOODY i give you much credit for making the quick decision….Must be they have contacted another head coach and have something in the works to run Mangini out this quickly…2 other pending questions will be is Micheal T still going to be in the front office and who is the next head coach taking over….Hopefully an announcement with be made soon with Bill Parcells or Bill Cowler being greated in NY…Man finally something to smile about after a miserable Sunday night loss and end of the JETS season….
R…mangini was on board with the favre move.
i would have been cool with keeping mangini and replacing the coordinators…
as far as “he will coach somewhere else and be great” bull—t….. go away man….HIS CALLS IN THE 49ERS AND HAWKS GAMES WERE OF A SCARED WOMAN….
with the talent we have, the finish to the season was / is unacceptable.
I was hoping he’d get one more year. Oh well. Hopefully the only reason they’d do this is b/c they have someone with a great pedigree (cough cough Cowher) who is going to come on board. Otherwise, they’re not improving.
I think Mangini is eventually going to be very successful. Guy’s in his 30’s, had one absolutely dismal season (4-12), but one 10-6 and one 9-7 (albeit in an extreme collapse).
He just hadn’t put it all together yet. I was thinking one more year made sense b/c perhaps he would learn from his past transgressions.
But I was also getting sick of Mangini.
@Drew I agree. I think the Jets should have at least waited and found out the status of Favre. As horrid as Favre is (and I will admit, I was against the Favre trade to begin with) he is probably better then Clemens right now and the way the Jets are built right now financially, they are built to win now, not later.
Mangini’s just a little too green (no pun intended) to be an NFL head coach at this point. He needs a couple of more years as a coordinator or as a position coach, ideally under an HC who knows what the hell he’s doing. I personally could make better in-game decisions in Madden than Mangini’s done thus far.
Mangini was young, smart and competent. The odds that the team improves on him are not particularly good. They’re not signing Bill Cowher, and there aren’t any guys out there who are particularly attractive. I find it unlikely that they’ll end up with a better coach.
It’s a mistake made by an owner who overvalued the quality of the players on his own team. It may also mean that Favre will return, which isn’t good for the long-term health of the team.
It had to be done. Mangini lost this team.
you can’tI lose 4-5, pissing away an 8-3 start.
The biggest collapse in a long, sordid Jets history
With all the money that was spent, he had all the ingredients he needed to be successful. The losses out west, especially down the strectch, proved his fate. This teams was not prepared for whatever was thrown against them and as a result, they underachieved, after establishing themselves as a good team. You just cant bring him back after this collapse, at home and to Pennington.
Let’s welcome the chin (Cowher not Leno) to Florham Park!!!!!!!
I hate the NY media so much…Even though the Jets played like crap down the last 4-5 games, it was still a successful season.
Guys, the Jets were a 4-12 team last year! This year that give us a chance to get into the playoffs. But now the Jets owners will fire everyone and will have to rebuild…
Mangini should get one more year!!!
He said he was onboard with the Favre move. Haven’t you ever told your wife,gf,bf, mother, chimpanzee that they looked good when they didn’t? I’m sure there was no pressure put on by Woody to get Favre. His coaching is one thing and I won’t waste my time defending it, but don’t anyone be so blind as to think that Mangini was drooling for him. It is dumb to bring a starter in so late into camp. It takes a man with Pennington’s mentality to catch up so fast. Favre playing after his injury yesterday was letting an old horse run until he was done. We just happened to be done too. The coaching staff respected Favre enough to not bench him in a menaningless game and let him end his career on the pine.
Christ, this might mean that Favre’s coming back. I know that Favre wasn’t the biggest Mangini fan, and the fact that Eric got canned this soon might be a case of Woody choosing his cash cow of a QB over his head coach.
Mr T stays and Mangini fired. Cowher is not coming here with Mr T already established. Look for Spagnalo or maybe even a Parcells sighting.
For those of you discounting the chances of Cowher- well you’re wrong.
He has a home in the metro area since he’s employed in NYC (CBS gigs) and it’s been clear he wants back in the league. Now, he’s backed off some of those comments because the Browns seem to have been the only suitor. Skins were a possibility but for now, looks like they’ll stick with Zorn.
But today my friends, the New York Jets have given him another option. And if they can financially meet what Lerner will throw at him, well then I do think we are in the front seat for his services.
And that’s what the Jets need. A stern, no nonsense coach who was won at the HC level!! Not as a towel boy but as the leader of the show.
I’m extremely happy today, this year easily became the most disappointing in the last 20+ and we finally got rid of this wet noodle.
It’s a good day today.
Favre should be retired right after this press conference. He sucked and got mangini fired
Sean – I appreciate your defense of Mangini. But the fact remains is that the Jets got outplayed by inferior teams all season long, that speaks directly to coaching and schemes. The team didn’t make adjustments, and they got worse as the season went on.
I’m not convinced Favre stays for another season under a different coach (is he really going to want to learn another system?)
Bottom line is that Mangini isn’t Belicheck, he’s not a guy who was a top coordinator before getting this job, he was a mediocre coordinator for the Pats, he wasn’t ready for the coaching job, and the team, while playing above themselves at 8-3, certainly had more talent than the Raiders, Seahawks (w/o their entire O-Line), and 49ers.
I would have understood keeping Mangini also, but I don’t fault the Jets for dumping him either. We’ll see in the coming weeks if there’s comments by the players on Mangini or not as well. If there was some sort of mutiny in the locker room, that would have pushed everything forward too. Not unlike Al Groh in 2000
Parcells?! Lay off the Johnny and weed for breakfast. Come on guys, get serious.
Cowher is our one chance at a proven name. After that, it’s a list of ‘trendy’ coordinators. I agree Spags could happen but no Parcells, no Holmgren, so let’s not even bring it up.
1. Cowher
2. Spagnoulo
3. Ron Rivera
Long shot….Mariucci :)
I don’t know if I would have fired him because the team has developed in his philosophy and the money spent this past offseason is now like confetti. It isn’t my money though.
Otherwise my guesses are these:
Mangini stuck by his O and D coordinators and took a stand saying if they go he goes.
Woody spoke with NFL people and found out that there are replacement options and he didn’t want to waste time to get one (he did the same to get Mangini somewhat).
The players got tired of him and asked that he go. His shtick was old and his gamplanning convinced them that he’s not going to lead them to victory.
I think and said at the time that Favre isn’t the answer. I wonder if Mangini would be gone if Chad was here? I don’t love him but I thought things were getting better. It wasn’t Mangini giving up 3rd and longs all year. Perhaps it was his coaching or the D Coord or coverages instead of blitzes I don’t know. I just don’t think it was Mangini’s fault when it comes down to it.
Perhaps he isn’t great and Cowher will do well here. He certainly will get respect. I don’t know who else I’d rather have. I think Marty has it in him to win a SB maybe. He did make SD a formidable team but he’s older and he still did not win the big game.
I’d just like to know how Tannenbaum escapes culpability here.
Last night, when Woody was interviewed after the game, he said that while he expected the decision to be made relatively quickly, he did not want to make any decisions while the emotions of the end of the season are still running high. So much for that.
I think he deserved at least one more year. He’s a young coach, certainly not some crusty old codger who is set in his ways. That is, I think there was still hope for him to be open to trying to fix what is wrong, even if it meant changing parts of his approach.
Anyway, so now we start over. Again.
is mike tice still around?
seanmac 31 u must be psychic or have spoken with the front office of the Jets last night to make these comments…I in no way see Favre returning and also see a greater chance of him retiring while he still has some dignity left…although Mangini had a great personality with the press and the fans,,, his lack of discipline with the players and non aggressive play calling caused his demise….I feel although Mangini was a scape goat for other issues with the team Mangini did earn his right to a fresh new pink slip…and to all those who say Mangini had two winning seasons with the talent he has on this team 1 or 2 games over .500 isnt going to cut it…shoot even his players didn’t openly stick up for him in the press when they were questioned so from the inside out Mangini was doomed to get fired this year….
Last 5 games Brett Favre 2 TD 9 INT.
My thoughts exactly Ferraro41. I thought that coach should get one more year, with a QB that may have a chance to be the starter for more than 2 years, but I’m not surprised and I’m not that disappointed.
Cowher is noncommittal and if anything said he’s not going to coach this coming year. Spagnolo I’d give a shot to for sure. Maybe Crennel as D coord.
Maybe bring in someone that is not associated with Bellicheat would be good too.
3-4 next year?
You know i have to laugh at all the slandering of billichek although his cocky demeanor and win at all cost(spy gate) atleast the man has the skills to field a team that has been competitive for the last decade…shoot mangini himself tried to shadow himself in his footsteps but came up short with the lack of knowledge, coaching ability, and ability to prepare his team each week…have u ever and i mean ever looked at a Patriot team take the field an not look and play prepared…I think not and the laugher about this whole issue is that I hate Bllichek with a passion
I am thrilled with this. I am so tired of Mangini’s negative body language… he seems to never talk to the players on the sideline, its as though he is in his own little world out there.
I am hoping for Spagnuolo. Everyone who plays for him loves him, and he is a spark of energy on the sideline.
Favre has cost Mangini his job! Chan Pennington would have won 12 games with this Jets Team and with this coach.
This Favre move was the owners move to sell seat licensing frees… nothing more.
I hope Favre retires because this owner Johnson is NUTS wanting Favre back!
Joe
I have been saying this for the last 4 weeks after the Denver loss Mangini never was able to game plan according to the Jet’s talent. He always game plan to his scheme which,by the way, Brett never agree on. I mean, you draft the 6th player in the first round to teach him a new position? Come on, please!
I have always supported the Brett Farve trade. Having said that, he has shown his age or he is more seriously hurt that predicted. Come on, Woody is a business man first, If Mangini stays then he can’t sell new seats to Jet fans in the new stadium. It’s as simple as that.
Bring in a Bill Cowher and then you are really selling those seats. For Mangini it was pure and simple go to the playoffs or get fired! Which make me think that he may have lost many players in the locker room including his quarterback. He knew from the pre-season that if he did not made the playoffs Woody would (vote of confidence or not) give him the ax. The million dollar question will be who will be the Jet’s coach next year. I am betting that starts with a P. By and by, the Green Bay fans think if Brett would have stayed they would be like 12-4 and the Jet fans think that if Chad would have stayed the Jet’s would be like 13-3. Funny thing, isn’t it?
