News: GM Mike Tannenbaum & Owner Woody Johnson Announce Eric Mangini’s Firing

“[Eric Mangini's tenure] was very postive in many respects, but we feel that we can get a better fit with someone else.”

So said Woody Johnson, this morning in his and GM Mike Tannenbaum’s not 24 hours after saying that he wouldn’t make a decision until later this week. This season was set up for Mangini as a “make the playoffs or else” scenario as during the press conference, Woody noted that the “decision tree” had been a process “over a long time” for the course of the season and he and Mike Tannenbaum had made the “final decision” last night of a decision that was headed this way for a while.

The saddest part? Mangini didn’t even make it as long as Herm Edwards after the season. Ouch. Looking back at Mangini’s comments last night to the team, he said that he appreciated them and thanked them for their hard work this season, which make more sense with the decision that was announced today. When asked about Brett Favre, Woody said “I just think he adds a lot to the team that’s postiive.” Woody also added that he thought there was some upside to Brett Favre participating in the offseason camps …

To quote Bill Belichick, “that’s not what we’re looking for.”

So where does the team go from here? We’ll be looking at this closely over the next few days and weeks, but I think that the Jets have a lot of the personnel they need with a few exceptions (we’ll get into that later, there’s plenty of time, trust us) but just like last offseason, there are some serious concerns that need to be addressed at the most important spot on the team, Quarterback. It’s clear that Woody is looking for a coach who wants seperation of coaching and personnel duties so that might preclude someone like Cowher if he’s looking to add responsibilities. Will the Jets have to work with new offensive and defensive schemes? It’s hard to say, but Woody said “there’s a lot of talent in the building” and with coaches like Mike Westhoff, Bill Callahan and others, he’d be right.

UPDATE: Per Newsday:

Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer were fired as well.

  1. I think its a mistake, but theres no way you can blame management for making the move. I’ll just say this much- There better be a plan here, and that plan better include an upgrade at quarterback and a GOOD coach to replace Mangini. Its always easy to fire a coach, but its not always so easy to find someone better. So congrats Jets front office, go out and spend more money, its what you love to do these days.

  2. Watching the press conference beheading Eric Magini it was clear that the owner, clearly a great football mind, made this decision. I can’t say I was surprised by the firing. But Johnson goes to say, and Tannenbaum, the yes-man parrots, that they want FAVRE back. That is insane. Comparing responsibility for the team’s collapse, FAVRE bears way more blame than Mangini. He is so clearly finished as a player that it is totally insane to talk about his return. Yet that great football mind Johnson wants him back. Did FAVRE whisper in Woody’s ear, get rid of Mangini?

And why does that great football mind Johnson want him back? “He adds a lot to this organization,” said Woody. I think its all about selling Favre jerseys and merchandise.

And Woody, that great football mind, says he wouldn’t allow a new coach to also be GM. He has a yes-man for that job already. So I think we can forget about Cowher coming into this situation. Bellicheat was smart to get out when he did.

  3. Hey Mangini I hear there is a defensive backs coach opening available in the New England area – no not the Patriots – Wesleyan. Good luck “Mangenius”

  4. No Favre! Didn’t want him before the seaon and certainly do not want him now after his performance this year. Wake up Woody and Mike T!

  5. I was a fan of Mangini. I felt the play calling was horrible and at the end of the day even though the offensive and defensive coordinators do the calling it falls on the head coaches shoulders.

I hope that he goes somewhere else, continues learning what it takes to be a coach and wins a superbowl.

  6. callahan for OC?

  7. I sure the hell do not want to rip the defense up and start over with a 4-3!

I’m sure glad to see Schottenheimer’s near certain firing.

I think its a mistake. I think they are underestimating what a good job Mangini did to keep his team together. If they entered the season with expectations higher than 9 wins, with so many unknowns, they are kind of foolish.

  8. Bottom line. The Jets were not prepared by their coaching staff to be ready for the likes of SF and Seattle.

  9. I would like to see Callahan as OC and retain Westhoff. Other than that pretty much everyone else can go. How about Rex Ryan, 3-4 guy, in your face type, as a possible replacement for HC? For some reason I think Cowher is going to the Browns because he will have more personnel decisions there.

  10. Did the off and def coaches get fired yet?

  11. Nope, they should have been fired first.

  12. Rod Marinelli just became available.

  13. Actually Newsday is reporting that both Sutton and Schotty were fired, thank god.

  14. Mangini was a fraud as Head Coach- he could’nt get the team to rally for the big games and he certainly won’t get the team to rally around him now. you watch and see the players put him on a boat!

Favre was worth the fee this year, but definately not next! We watched his arm get progressively weaker game after game and for a QB that throws to spots not people the arm has to be stronger! Great Career though, kinda reminds me of when Namath went to the Rams.

  15. Yea Joe but without the SB win.

  16. Hey jets fans, now you know what it’s like to be a Favre hating Packers fan the last few years, when everyone is talking up Favre like he’s the second coming of Christ in WI (the majority of Packer fans still areon that trip today, believe it not!). The good news for me is that now maybe the moron Packers fans will stop whining about how they should get Brett back, if only they had Brett, blah blah blah!

After Favre at age 35 refused to have anything to do with mentoring Rodgers in his rookie year, it became apparent to this Packer fan that he is not the good guy everyone says he is, but is only in it for himself. His decision to come back this year was the ultimate narcissistic move and if he agrees to come back next year, God help the Jets!

  17. get gruden! now.

  18. They had to fire Mangini. He did a terrible job down the stretch. The team was woefully unprepared the last 5 games. Favre didn’t help, but the main problem was coaching. Bad playcalling and adjusting on both sides of the ball, and the team was never fired up. Those all fall at the doorstep of the head coach. If not for a miracle play against Buffalo, the Jets would’ve been 0-5 to end the season. Unacceptable. Who should we get? Not sure right now, but definitely someone with some emotion.

  19. Is Westhoff for HC the craziest idea? His special teams are always ready to go- and he knows he doesn’t have lots of years ahead of him.

  20. Thank you Packers fan, Favre is all about me, me, me. Did he ever once take responsibilty for his horrible decision making, nope, always blamed it on something else, oh no he comes out and says his shoulder is hurt after throwing only 2 TD’s in his last 5 games, go back to your farm in Kiln ya douche. I really think the Jets regressed with him as QB, yes they scored a ton of points but that was because of TJ and Leon, hopefully the next coach actually uses both of them more.

  21. johnsec.125, on December 29th, 2008 at 11:03 am Said:
    get gruden! now.

HUH? Didn’t they lose ALL their games in December???

  22. i am voting for gruben if he becomes available or westhoff.

  23. Tampa had a horrendous collapse this year just about as bad as the Jets if not worse, no thanks, stay far away Chuckie.

  24. What a terrible decision. I know I may be in the minority but I like Mangini as a coach. I figured in the off season the Jets would get a new O-Coordinator and let Brett ride off into the sunset. I hope Mangini gets picked up by another team and maybe pulls a Chad Pennington and beats the Jets in the Meadowlands. Does anyone have any prediction on where Mangini would go as a coach or coordinator?

  25. Fire Tannenbaum!!!

  26. Can they fire Woody?

  27. HALLELUJAH.

Mangini sucks, so does schott and sutton. Adios fellas.

As for Favre: at least 10 of his 22 ins’s were because receivers were not in position. thats a PLAY CALLING mistake. Schottenheimer: LEARN TO CALL PLAYS THAT EVERYONE HAS PRACTICED AND EXECUTED WELL.

    Next coach;

Cowher would be nice, but honestly, someone made a good point. Callahan took a team to the superbowl. He got boondoggled by Al Davis. He can be a nice fit.

We need Cassel only if Favre retires and ship out Coles and his yapper and bring in Houshmanzadeh.

  28. This team goes nowhere with Tannenbaum at the helm. He is the real reason why the 2007 (Kendall, OL) season and the 2008 (Chad vs Favre) season were a disaster!

  29. Oh and somehow Tannenbaum is immune to all this? The guy had the wrong personnel for two years, makes some (somewhat savvy) moves in the offseason, and survives the Mangini era?

I may be the last Jet fan that feels this way but Mangini put a lot of hard work into his tenure. If he was given a few more years, I think we would have won a superbowl with him at the helm.

    Very disappointing move.

At least we can go for Cowher now. But he won’t sign for any less than full control over personnel decisions.

    Sayonara Tannenbaum.

One last note, Cowher coached for 15 years in Pittsburgh and won one superbowl. That is sometimes the patience a coach deserves. Turnover at the top spot doesn’t win championships. When will we learn?

  30. its draft season……. i smell a QB

  31. Yes this just in, the Pop warner league needs a ball boy. Eric Mangini said to be contemplating opening.

  32. Also, this quote from Johnson about Mangini:

“I don’t think it was one thing,” he continued. “We had to go in a different direction. There’s nothing specific. It’s just a call we made. Hopefully, it’s correct.” – ESPN

    WHAT? Are you KIDDING?

There is nothing worse than an owner who doesn’t understand that success is a process. It doesn’t come quickly and never will.

  33. Dan,

After 3 seasons Cowher won 2 division titles and made the playoffs all 3 seasons. He earned that kind of patience.

Truth is, I think Cowher is incredibly overrated as a playoff coach, he’s very similar to Schottenheimer but happened to get a bit lucky with the 2006 playoffs. Mangini was hideous down the stretch as the Jets lost to 2 inferior teams and was badly outplayed by a 3rd.

A 3-5 record vs. the 2 worst divisions in the league PLUS an 0-4 record on the west coach PLUS a completely inability to make adjustments as the games wore on. Maybe Mangini will be successful down the line, but he needs more experience.

  34. Yea! What a gift. Thank you Mr. Johnson. I don’t see why 23-26 should have bought him more time. If Mangini was given three more years, let’s say, I bet his record would be 46-52. To everyone who thinks this is a mistake, to everyone who thinks Mangini is going to be a Belichik for some other team, to everyone who thinks he needed more time – fooey. Plus to everyone who cries that it’s three more years of implementing a new system before the team wins, tell that to the Dolphins and the Falcons.

  35. What exactly is it that Mangini did as a head coach for the Jets to make anyone like the job he did? I just don’ t get it. You give Mangini free passes over and over for the same garbage you panned Herm for. Makes no sense to me. Mangini proved that he is not capable of learning from his mistakes and adjusting his game accordingly, just like the common complaints about Herm. Herm was 10-6 in his first year, same as Eric, so please don’t cite that as a valid reason. At least Herm won a division title and a few playoff games (with arguably a less talented roster – on paper anyway). So why all the love for Eric Mangini?

  36. Most of my fellow Jet fans are idiots….If it was up to them they would have Joe Beningo be the gM or coach.

  37. I can’t believe how many of you are against Tannenbaum- he brought in this great team that was a Super Bowl contender a few weeks ago. I still think Mangini had potential to be great and I fear Cowher may be overrated. I wouldn’t mind bringing Billick in or maybe Gruden (I think M. Kiffin might be more to blame for the collapse than Gruden)

  38. The Jets need a proven guy. I am a little scared by Spags but it would excite the fan base.

  39. I do not want Billick. He was a offensive guy who had one of worst offenses in history.

  40. When asked about Favre, Woody said something to the effect that everyone forgets he’s been here less than a year, and he thinks Favre would benefit from “another year in our system”.

Well here’s a news flash for The Wood Man….you just fired your coach and both coordinators! I don’t know exactly what “system” is the esteemed interception machine going to be learning, but it obviously isn’t the same one he was just running.

I tell you, while I can’t fault an owner for wanting to make a change, that whole press conference sounded like a street corner shell game. Tannenbaum opens his mouth and words come out, but he never actually says *anything*.

  41. well mangini wasn’t part of that process for success ..u gotta have a coach with some balls for success to happen and mangini’s nuts definately turtled more often then not when the game was on the line

also he and tannenbaum (who should be fired too) made some seriously questionable personel decisions i mean why play drama games with players ..someone was watching too much friday night lights ..the pete kendall stuff then the pennington/clemens stuff and now farve its all useless drama that shouldn’t be part of what makes a winning team ..although i do find myself siding with them now about coles and chris baker neither could catch a cold when they needed it this year ..and crotchery was awful as well

lets hope they make a good decision on who’s next and the QB situation

btw cowher won’t be coaching anywhere for short of record money so i doubt he’ll be the jets head coach anytime soon..or anywhere else

  42. Biebs, you are way off on Cowher’s playoff track record. He’s 12-9 all-time as a playoff coach, with 5 AFC Championship appearances, and a Super Bowl victory. Marty was 5-13 in his playoff coaching career, so how is Cowher “incredibly overrated” and how is his body of work “very similar” to Shottenheimer?

Not saying he’s the right fit for the Jets, but Cowher’s coaching record is one of the greatest in league history. (Asterisk here – I get it that he had quality assistants for many of his years, but don’t all great coaches?)

  43. THIS IS A NO BRAINER, BRING IN HOLMGREN.

HOLMGREN & FAVRE TOGETHER AGAIN WINNING ANOTHER SUPER BOWL!

  44. And now some Parcells rumors:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3795922

  45. I would love to see Parcells stick it to Belichick. I doubt it though

  46. Holmgren already announced several times he is sitting out 2009.

  47. Tannenbaum is brilliant. Don’t blame him. Other than the Favre move, and the Kendall move (which he learned from, as evidenced by the Baker dealings), he has made TREMENDOUS personnel moves and draft picks. I trust in Tannenbaum.

Not sure about Mangini right now. The lack of fire the last five games of the season was unacceptable, but you should be able to get emotional leadership from players. Mangini also failed to adapt to the playcalling to our strengths. Growing pains? Maybe. But we don’t have the patience for that in New York.

Sure, Gruden had a collapse of his own, but his body of work shows that he is a good coach, a Super Bowl-winning coach.

FAVRE NEEDS TO GO. We’re not the Packers, we don’t owe him anything.

  48. cowher will not come to the jets w/out total control. woody will not fire his yes man, tannenbaum. i know the bucs collapsed, but they played over their heads for most of the season. we need cowher, but i’d be happy with gruden or billick. this team needs a coach with experience.

  49. You can’t drop games to San Fran and Seattle during a playoff run and hope to keep your job. And for those that think this was Favre’s fault, I challenge you to look at the game films and show me the wide open receivers that he missed. On seemingly every pass, every receiver was covered. Did he make some bad throws, yeah, but more often than not he tried to get the ball to one of the blanketed receivers and it ended up in a turnover. He’s still shown he can make the throws, even with an injury.

  50. i hate to see anyone get fired, but in this situation, mangini had to go.

it was unforgivable to lose in seattle. knowing what had to be done and mangini didn t have his guys ready to play.

the move had to made. it will be intresting to see who we get in. i would love jon gruden.

nickolas – c mon buddy, give the “fire Mr T” comments a rest. this guy has cleaned up the cap mess, spent money well, drafted tremendously, he is the reson there is hope for this franchise.

you can t kill a guy for making the favre move now. I didn t see you talking about it in august as a bad move so pipe down now

  51. don’t forget, tannenbaum drafted gholston .

  52. I love Mr T but did he learn fron the Kendall mess? He will have another with the Coles situation coming this off-season.

  53. cowher, schottenheimer sr., parcells, and holmgren, as well as dungy since someone will hop on that bandwagon are all out i mean lets face facts 4 of the aforementioned coaches all have been very public about leaving/retiring/staying retired..yes that may not mean much but its highly doubtful any of them do anything but stick to where they’re at..

as far as parcells goes he’s busy building a team to kick our team and his old teams asses and doing a damn fine job of it as parcells is always does

start thinking coordinators and college coaches or other former coaches (like billick) who would actually interested in coaching again for reasonable amounts of money ..besides haven’t we had enough of icons and idols coming to the jets only to fall and fail (thx brett)

  54. Bent, he announced that before there was a head coaching job available for his favorite QB.

  55. ps. tannenbaum sux he is blinded by stars gholston was a huge huge bust and most likely will remain so ..he needs to stop reading mock drafts to see how he’s gonna draft and show some talent at picking the right players ..hell just call jerry reese

  56. I guarantee Favre has already called Holmgren about the job.

  57. holmgren/farve – stop being such a fanboy pls its embarrasing

  58. Thank God this is over. This year was as painful as any in the 40 years I’ve been a Jet fan. I really don’t care who they get right now.
    Happy happy joy joy!

  59. Westhoff might be a real interesting choice. He’s done an absolutely incredible special teams job over the years and he commands a ton of respect from the players and coaches. He’s also got fire in his belly! Do Special Teams coaches ever get jobs like HC?

  60. The merry-go-round that is the NY Jets of the last 3 decades continues. This is what hapens when you have owners who think they know more than the football professionals. I do not include Tangenius in that category. Look at the Atlanta Falcons and what they have done. Arthur Blank went to a successful organization, the Patriots, stole a young GM candidate, put him in charge, and backed the hell off. Tom Dimitroff is making all the football decisions. He hired a hard-ass head coach with years of experience (Mike Smith) who believes in running the ball, controlling the clock, avoiding turnovers, and playing smashmouth defense; and made a comitment to build through the draft. The Jets should do the following: steal Scott Pioli from New England and make him GM, fire Tannenaum before he digs the Jet’s hole even deeper with the free agents who destroy cap flexiblity; do not sign Cole long-term who is a poor man’s TO; do not, I repeat, DO NOT bring Brett Farve back who is totally washed up; and start getting ready for the draft. Regarding the draft: do everything possible to move up and snag Matthew Stafford; and finally, bring in a head coach with the above philosophy. Any player that does not buy in to blood and guts football is gone. My biggest problem with Mangini was that he had no identifiable coaching philosophy or coaching system. If he did he could never articulate it to anyone. Mangini was the Pillsbury dough boy and the team played soft, just like the head guy. This is a mess.

  61. It’s interesting that none of the Belichick disciples have found much success as Head Coaches.

In a sense, BB’s cold, calculated, methodical, cerebral approach is a terrible fit with the modern player. It is likely the man’s rather specific brand of dark charisma is the biggest part of his success. That kind of anonymous, lunch pail, every little facet of every little task has the same importance monotony, is an extremely tough sell to today’s Sports Center athlete.

It’s something he perfected with Parcells-toughened players and, though he’d never admit it, he took a lot from Big Bill. One thing that’s essential is getting a few team leaders to buy in, totally, and spread the message from within. HIs exceptional strategic approach would fail without it.

I think the BB-tree coaches all focus too specifically on what their jobs were under him, strategy and planning, without being able to duplicate the charismatic leadership element that is equally, if not more, important.

  62. TRU – rarely (unless you’re the raiders since i’m sure the special teams coach will be the HC midway through next season) but westhoff paired with a great DC and OC might be awesome by all accounts jets fans and players love the guy the only reservation i’d have is his health and making sure the groundwork is in place as far as the staff goes

  63. every move is designed to sell PSLs and nothing more. there is a deadline to raise the money. Woody Johnson is not stupid.
Not making the playoffs is a huge embarrassment for him but will hurt even more in the pocket when he has to lower PSL prices Manginini must have known what was coming after seeing Woody on the post game last night.

  64. PSL – u are exactly right every move this season was to put butts in seats and it wouldn’t be outside the realm of reality if we did see them pay cowher or some other huge name ungodly sums of money to come out of retirement to coach the jets

ps. this just in tannenbaum was seen digging up the grave of coach lombardi

  65. This is dumb. This is gonna come back and bite the jets in the a$$ just like them letting go of pennington did. Why do we always seem to go backwards instead of forward. Tannenbaum pushed for the favre trade and that was what screwed up the whole season. Im gonna laugh when mangini goes somewhere else and does a good job. Mangini should not have been fired. Brett should have been let go, the coordinators fired (which they have been thank god), keep mangini and get a quarterback that will play for some time. I think our chances for next year would have been much better with this scenario. Now we can just look forward to the season after next to do anything good unless we somehow become extremely lucky. Unless management is doing this in the hopes that they can get parcells b/c of his one year opt-out clause, then i dont see this as a good move. If no one knows what im talking about with the one year opt-out clause, click here:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3795922

  66. rick – guess what make sure u tune in to watch the giants in the playoffs this season since the pats couldn’t do it u douche

    18- 1 remember that always u prick

    go giants!!

  67. JPLosman..you did not see me in August making comments about the Favre move, because you were not posting or reading this blog. From all the people in this blog there were less than five who were against this move. I happened to be one.

I was against the Kendall move agrguing that the OL would be dysfanctional and that Chad or Clemens would be running for their lifes. Guess what? Chad was injured in the very first game. Clemens took several hits too and the OL gave the most sucks in the leaugue.
I was for Cower in the midst of the 2007 season and I posted my position on this blog.

Moreover I had argued that with the Favre move mangini’s job was on the line and I had predicted that the team would be dysfunctional and that Chad would beat the hell out of this Jets team. Again Guess what?

Since the Kendall saga, it became obvious that Tannenbaum had NO IDEA what he is doing. I said ok lets cut him some slack, he may be able to learn from his mistakes, but he did not! Late August he cuts loose our BEST PLAYER, our LEADER and gets a 40 year old QB who had done nothing since the mid-90s in order to take the team to the freaking SB. Give me a freaking brake! If this is not a salesman’s job, then it is the job of an ignorant GM.

Tannebaum is not a football man he is simply an accountant

  68. This is awesome news, I am truly happy since Christmas came twice this year!!!! The Penguin is gone, The Penguin is gone!!!!

Ok – here should be the Jets front office next moves….

    1. Clear house on the coaching team because they stink. Exceptions are Westhoff, and Callahan. They are the only ones that did well this year and gave there teams life.

    2. Open the checkbook Woody and have Mike T do everything he can to acquire an available Superbowl Head Coach like… (and in this order)

    a. Bill Cowher (Very possible – so make this one happen)
    b. Bill Parcells (Slim – but he dump us before)
    c. Mike Holmgren (Wife will say no, but money is a factor)
    d. Jim Fossil (On the market, we could get him cheap)

If all else is unattainable then go get Spagnoulo from the Giants.

  69. Nikolas – there were waaay more than 5 people against the move, it’s just that most of them decided not to actively root against the Jets and instead hoped that the move would pan out even if they didn’t like it.

Speaking for myself, the season was still a lot of fun, albeit frustrating in the end.

  70. nik – i remember from earlier this year and i’m with u all the way and tannenbaum is god awful but u gotta admire the wormish way he keeps finding scapegoats for his failure and folly ..although no matter what mangini was done

  71. bent – true also i was against the move then went with it but now it proves all of us that were against it right

  72. I was cautiously for the move, but didn’t have outsized expectations. Then again, I didn’t have outsized expectations for all off the roster changes, nor believe that Chad would flourish and become a SB winning QB on the Jets this year. It’s clear he did flourish in another system, under different circumstances. Whether he becomes a SB QB there is still open to question. I would be happy for him if he did.

  73. Pats not in playoffs Pricelesssssssssssssss!!!!!!

  74. Hey Jets fan 4 life;

What about Billick? he may be a great #2 choice after cowher. Fassel? no thanks.

  75. [...] and … Woody Johnson was divorced in 2001 and has three daughters from that marriage: …thejetsblog.com

  76. Bent….I can read between the lines, and I know that there were others too, who I guess for good reasons did not want to express their opinion.
On the other hand, I am not bothered by your cheap shot that I was rooting against the Jets. Those who have read my posts know very well what I was rooting for and against; and while it was your choice to have fun, as Favre did, and root for this parody, it was also my choice to have fun by rooting against it.

  77. VINNY – i like the possibility of billick .but will billick coach again he’s another one of those denier’s who’s saying he’s done with coaching too ..fassel ….no comment

any urban meyer fans ..i’m not a real big college to pro’s guy as far as coaches go (or vice versa) but theres gotta be some nice prospects out there somewhere that weren’t snatched up last year in that coaches culling

  78. no matter what as a giants fan too i hope spags stays but if he goes anywhere i hope it is the jets

nik – u can have your fun anyway u want it but no fan should root against a team just because they made a bad move ..eventually u have to just hope for the best no matter what the outcome eventually is

  79. KJ……That was ny objection! The product on the field was no TEAM and the move was not just a bad move! They rooted out the heart and soul of the team in order to SELL PSLs.

  80. How about Marriucci? He is close enough to Favre since he constantly talks about him on NFL Network…

  81. Favre has cost Mangini his job! Chan Pennington would have won 12 games with this Jets Team and with this coach.

This Favre move was the owners move to sell seat licensing frees… nothing more.

I hope Favre retires because this owner Johnson is NUTS wanting Favre back!

    Joe

  82. Woody Johnson just ended any hopes the Jets had at winning a Superbowl before 2020.

A team will never win with a money first owner.

Mangini should’ve stayed, Callahan upgraded to OC and we should have taken Rob Ryan from Oakland in the offeason to helm our defense.

This is the most ridiculous decision I have ever seen the Jets make.

They fire a young head coach with a great amount of potential, yet welcome back a 40 year old quaterback who just turn the ball over 30 times in one season.

I wish Mangini all the luck in the world, and I hope that he beats the Jets next year

  83. Vinnywasthebest
My Bad your absolutely correct Billick should be on this list behind “The Golden Chin”.

As for Fossel – I know he is a tool! I don’t like the guy, however he did take the Giants to the post season many times and also took them to the Superbowl in 2000 as the Head Coach. I think he should be considered for a look.

  84. It’s generally accepted that Steve Gutman spent 25 years contributing absolutely nothing to the J E T S attaining any kind of success. This Tannenbaum is nothing more than a shill. Contribution wise, he hired Mangini, and then dumped him, without so much as a word, when Woody said so. The Tannenbaum must be eliminated from this football organization. I’m sure he could find a nice position shilling with Gutman, who runs a wretched shilling firm in Manhattan. They can rename it Two Shills from the Bronx. Keep the Tannenbaum and you’re destined to remain bottom feeders. Count on it.
