Breaking News: Shanahan Fired Too

by Bent on December 30th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

In another interesting development that just came over on ESPN, the Denver Broncos have fired long time head coach Mike Shanahan. Are the Jets likely to be interested in another guy who will want control (and runs a team that has played 4-3 and zonal blocking for some time)? Also, are the Broncos likely suitors for any of the Jets’ targets?

  1. Seems that with Woody’s comment about not giving any one guy total control, Shanny would be a long shot. Can’t imagine him not wanting total control, but who knows? Maybe he’d be glad to have someone else do the stuff he doesn’t like.

The jets should jump at the chance to get shanahan. he is one of the ELITE coaches in the nfl. (and he’s more focused on the offense – would he have a problem adding a romeo crennel to coach a 3-4 defense?)

I think the jets are the likely favorites (over denver) for any of the coaching candidates they’ve been linked to…

    1. Cowher’s has 2 daughters in the NY area
    2. Spagnola has been the NY media darling and surely already feels comfortable here
    3. Marty Schott’s son is already the offensive coordinator for the jets

now you add Shanahan to the list of potential coaches.

  3. avatar Big Bad Bob says:

Having to revert back to a 4-3 would suck. And, you’ve got to assume that’s what shannahan would want to do. Pursue Cowher!

  4. avatar mole57 says:

Shanahan seems perfect for Kansas City. That way he can play both of his former teams twice a year.

  5. avatar Big Bad Bob says:

Yeah, shanny to KC. Then we could get The Herminator back. (Obviously, I’m joking)

  6. Think Crennel would take a job as DC?

  7. avatar AbdulSalaam says:

As long as he doesn’t bring DRob, I’m ok with it.

  8. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

The best Crennel is going to get anywhere is a coordinator role. No way he gets another head coaching gig coming off the Cleveland mess.

  9. avatar ian says:

shanahan would be perfect fit with callahan staying as oc or line coach/asst. head coach. (callahan likes zone blocking schemes.) and i can’t see why shanahan wouldn’t be ok with crennel running a 3-4. that would be a terrific coaching staff.

shanahan is one of the top offensive play callers in the league. i would be very excited for him. so obviously, it will never happen.

  10. avatar SackDance99 says:

Romeo will be a DC somewhere. I’m shocked at Shanahan’s departure. Obviously, there’s a story there involving a problem with ownership. Offensively, I love Shanahan. But, I really don’t want to see a switch back to the 4-3. Cowher’s a better fit. Shanahan will go to KC if Herm is fired. That way, he can still torture Al Davis and get revenge over the Broncos.

  11. avatar Bent says:

Not front page-worthy, but Martz was axed as 49ers OC. Any thoughts on whether he would be compatible with Favre and/or any of the coaching candidates?

  12. avatar nyckage says:

If we get Cowher, I think Cowher should try to get Crennel hear, but most likely he will try to get some guys from the Steelers.

I’m absolutely against Shanhan, I will die if we get him,

And as far as Spags I like his philosophy, rush 500 , but we would have to revert to the 4-3, I don’t hate the 4-3 , but I hate making transitions, especially something as big as this.
We just got the right personal in for the 3-4, and what if Spag fails, then what? Are we gonna go after a 3-4 guy

  13. avatar nyckage says:

    Bent

Martz has got to be done, he ain’t gonna work well with Favre, because that would mean Favre has to throw for the rest of the season, and Favre’s arm is, let’s just say it’s not young, and I don’t think any team wants to see a bootlegged Greatest Show on Turf, like he tried with the Lions, and Singeltery didn’t even let him once loose, and Martz sucks when he ain’t sending in plays that aren’t a forward pass

  14. avatar JesusRevis says:

nyckage, I couldnt agree with you more, i was just about to post the same thing. The Jets invested way too much time and money into building a 3-4 defense, changing that now would set us back 2-3 years. We need a 3-4 minded coach, we need cowher.

  15. avatar JesusRevis says:

i was referring to ur first post about spagnoula

  16. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

god, could you imagine how many turnovers you’d get with a martz/favre combo

  17. avatar Ed L says:

i might be a little late with this but i cant believe jauron from the bills is getting to keep his job…

    just saw it on espn

  18. avatar GREENBLOOD says:

Mike Shanahan is my #1 choice.

  19. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

Hire Cowher as the head coach
    Crennel as the Defensive Coordinator
and Callahan as the Offensive Coordinator
    That would be a dream……..

  20. avatar jp losman says:

it took three years to fully move from the 4-3 to the 3-4 and even this year, we had growing pains.

boy, mike shanahan would be great, but would we have to go to 4-3 under him?

le – ellis – played under herm
dt – jenkins – played in carolina last year
dt – pouha – played under herm
    re – gholsten/bowens

    olb – barton
mlb – harris – no idea
olb – pace – or is he a DE

i feel when gruden gets fired later this week, we could add him to the list. i think they play cover 2 in tampa, so this is a legitimate question as the search for a head coach continues.

do we eliminate 4 – 3 and cover 2 guys or do we make another switch

  21. avatar swizzle81 says:

    I think a Martz/Favre combo would break Blanda’s record of 42 INTS.

  22. avatar jp losman says:

it sure would be a nice joke played on jets fans. weren t there a number of 4-3 dt’s in the draft last year at #6.

not calling gholsten a bust, i m just saying

  23. avatar Bent says:

jpl – in a 4-3 your linebackers must be fast. Harris and Pace are not – and Barton is an unrestricted free agent.

  24. avatar LeeH says:

Okay, I have been reading these posts for a long time now.. I am yet to voice my opinion. There have been some great discussions on here over the last few days and I commend.

I am not one to be overly critical because everyone is entitled to their opinion, but why is their so much love on this board for Bill Callahan…

He inherited a Rich Gannon coached team and took them to the Super Bowl sure but he was grossly outcoached by Gruden in that game and then run out of town..

He did nothing at Nebraska and In my opinion the Jets o line did not live up to potential this season….Remember folks, Callahan’s specialty is the west coast offense and this year’s lines biggest weakness was pass blocking..

I am not saying the line wasn’t very good, they were. Look at how Tanny brought in. It is not like we were dominant, we were good. We have the potential to be dominant and thats why imho Callahan did not do a particularly good job…

Please someone come at me strong on the defensive..Maybe there is something I am missing. Do not get trapped in the fact that he has experience. He does not fit Cowher’s style at all..

  25. avatar nyckage says:

OK so it’s official we give up on Spags and any other 4-3 coach. But i have a feeling the Jets might still try hard to get Spag, but all you fools who say Shanhan,OK, the guy is a good offensive coach, he will basically focus badly on the offense, it won’t even be funny, so our D will look horrible, no matter how much talent we have

I would want to go after Marty, but then he might want to keep Brian, well I don’t hate him, but he needs to work on his consistency( play calling namely) but other than that he ain’t so bad.

  26. avatar Bent says:

Re: Callahan. Granted his record as a head coach is bad, but he deserved the chance based on his reputation which was founded on his excellent work as an offensive line coach.

I don’t disagree that the line wasn’t perfect, but Mangold went to the Pro Bowl, the primary pass protector (Brick) gave up just three sacks was named as a Pro Bowl alternate (he was robbed by the way) and they were one of the best running games statistically in the AFC with a ton of TDs, leading to Jones (who had 1 TD last year) and Washington going to Hawaii too.

Maybe some of the calls for him to become OC are a bit undeserved, but the ENORMOUS improvement over last year was not all down to Alan Faneca (who, by the way, was not coincidentally on a line that was one of the worst pass protection units in the league last year – that is not his strength…and similarly Damien Woody may have struggled at times with his pass protection, but was primarily in there to run block and did well).

Finally, one of Callahan’s roles was running game coordinator, so Schott had more responsibility for the passing game and maybe the pass protection issues, which were not THAT bad anyway, were down to him.

Not a glowing endorsement, but those are the reasons.

  27. avatar Bent says:

KAGE – I don’t think you ever rule a guy out because of system. I’d rather get the best candidate and suffer some initial teething troubles than just get some retread because “at least we won’t have to change scheme”.

Besides, Spags runs a hybrid, so the upheaveal might not be all that bad. I’m sure he would be able to adapt it to make the most of Jenkins strength.

  28. avatar swizzle81 says:

Shanny would be a terrible fit for this team. His Denver teams have consistently ranked in the bottom of the league in defense for the past several years. He also went thru 3 DC the past 3 years. The Jets need someone with a little fire and a strong defensive background.

As for OC I wouldn’t mind Callahan for OC at all. I believe he was responsible for the improvement in the running game.

COACHES WISH LIST #1 Cowler#2Bill Parcel and Spagnoula#3 Shanahan and Rex Ryan

  30. avatar Mel31602 says:

I think Shanahan was so bad in Denver on D because he didn’t have the talent… he was the GM the past few years and blew it on draft picks and free agents. As long as they keep Tanny picking the personnel and pick a 3-4 D coordinator they should be fine with Shanahan as the coach.

  31. avatar SackDance99 says:

I have 2 concerns with Shanahan, who I don’t want. First, he is 1-4 in the playoffs since Elway retired. Second, Denver has the most unique home field advantage in the NFL with the high altitude and thin air. Shanny built his Denver teams to exploit that advantage with smaller, quicker, more aerobically fit players. I don’t think that works in the East where size and smashmouth football is prevalent.

Whichever HC is hired has to run a 3-4 or a hybrid. There’s too many pure 3-4 players, including Pace, Harris and Thomas.
