Cowher Interested in Jets, Wants Money and Power

by Bassett on December 30th, 2008 at 4:50 am

Multiple sources were reporting Monday night that Bill Cowher might in fact be interested in coaching the Jets. After telling Cleveland that he wasn’t interested in coaching, what he left off when talking to Browns owner Randy Lerner was that it wasn’t coaching so much as the Cleveland part.

Glauber has a story in which he talks to Boomer about Cowher’s leanings and basically it’s all speculative, but the number batted around in the article for Cowher’s services are in the $10 million per year neighborhood. Yikes, that’s a lot of overpriced crappy food on gameday.

As has been made abundantly clear, Cowher reportedly isn’t just looking for a payday, but he’s looking for personnel control.

Tannenbaum has a firm place in Jets owner Woody Johnson’s counsel, so if the man can look himself in the mirror after backstabbing his former boss to get his GM job and if he can fire his good friend without any real public remorse, then you better believe he will tell Woody to go in another direction if he feels like Cowher would be a threat to his influence in this franchise. But then again, maybe making $10 million a year would help Cowher forget that personnel decisions nonsense anyway.

Cowher is a very well-known figure in the NFL. The coaches who made the biggest mark this season, and are still out there swinging away, are much less well known.

Cower all the way. This team needs fire and emotion.

  3. avatar kd bart says:

Did I hear correctly yesterday that Cowher has one daughter who lives in NYC and another daughter who goes to Princeton? Coaching an NFL team in Northern NJ would be a nice fit family wise.

Well, alot has happened in 48 hours now hasn’t it?
For those conspiracy theorists out there, Mangini could have been fired as early as after the Seattle game, which in my mind really sealed his fate.
Could talks of a successor have come that early? Did Woody speak with Cowher before Cleveland got to him, hence the Chin’s reluctance to even consider the job there?
(By the way Woody, when did making a decision “this week” mean “tomorrow morning”?)

Did anyone notice how nervously Tanny looked at Woody when stating that they made the decision “together” and that it was the “right” decision? Does this imply Tanny will be out of a job soon and Cowher will get all he desires?

Make no mistake, Mr. Johnson is driving the bus here and all the major decisions in my opinion are solely his: the staidum, getting Favre, firing Eric and now hiring Cowher. (He must read TJB).

  5. avatar JoeMustGo says:

What difference does it make where Cowher’s daughters live? It’s not like he’s going to have time to tuck them in at night. He’d better be focused 24/7 on football.

In my opinioon, I don’t think giving one man complete power is a good idea. I would love to have Cowher, but believe Tannenbaum should keep some kind of role in personnel decisions if for nothing else, for checks & balances. You have to give Tannenbaum (and Mangini if involved) credit for all the moves they’ve made during their rule. Other than Cutler & Gholston, each of their moves including the Favre acquisition has been good.
Mangold, L Washington, T. Jones, David Harris, Jenkins, Faneca, Revis…all very talented players. So let’s get Cowher, but keep some kins of stability in place.

I understand your frustration with Tannenbaum, but I think portraying Terry Bradway as a martyr might take it a bit too far.

The Favre thing has been beaten to a bloody pulp on this blog, and we all know that a good percentage of high draft picks end up disappointing (i.e. Gholston).

Other than those two issues, what is the problem that some of you have with Tannenbaum’s body of work? Personally, I’d give him a grade of B+ and think he’s done a very good job overall. So what gives?

  9. avatar kd bart says:

It might make a diference with his wife. Who, believe me, will have a say in whether or not he returns to coaching. Cleveland may be out because she’s not willing to go there. But she might be amicable to Northern Jersey knowing her kids are near by.

  10. avatar pound4pound says:

I love the idea of Cowher coming here as a HC, but I’d be very reluctant to give him power over personnel. This almost never works – the two jobs both take up a ton of time, and are entirely different. One is about making the team better for the next game, the other is about making the team strong for years to come. Cowher never had personnel control in Pittsburgh, so who knows if he’d even be good at it?

If they gave him a voice in personnel, but agreed that Tannenbaum gets final say, I’m thrilled with that. But letting Cowher control personnel is a different ball of wax.

  11. avatar Nikolas says:

IF it is True that Mangini was against the Favre move, -even the Kendall one-then some of you should understand why a coach wants power over peronnel. Favre did cost Mangini his job.

I do not know Tannebaum, maybe he does what Woody tells him to do and he is used as a scapegoat, but in my opinion he is responsible for the two consequitive disappointing seasons.

  12. avatar gsteigs says:

woody said in the interview being a buisness guy he believes that you cant be a gm and a coach its just to much work for one person

  13. avatar charleyjet says:

Tannenbaum is a corporate yes-man who threw his friend and hire under the bus to save himself. i would shed no tears to see Cowher come in as GM-Coach (you do remember Parcells, right?) and show this guy the door.

  14. avatar CWPOST says:

as first posted right after our lost ! BRING IN COWHER !

  15. avatar johnnylocks says:

Tannebaum is a very good young GM and will probably only get better. It’s fine that Cowher has a lot of say over the personnel – he should. But Tannebaum should still be GM, run the draft, and work with Cowher. I think this is what Woody meant. Tanngini has a very good synergy in picking and developing players (aside from Favre/Kendall). I think Woody wants that to develop again..

  16. avatar swizzle81 says:

Generally coaches who have been giving the reigns on personnel decisions have not fared out so well, with that said I agree with most of you that Tannenbaum has Woody’s ear and will not relenquish his role.

  17. avatar junior says:

They just said on mike and mike we are not getting cowher because he wants gm power

  18. avatar Nikolas says:

Now it is reported on ESPN radio that Cowher will not come to the Jets, because Woody wants Tannenbaum as GM while Cowher wants to bring his own people.

    Great!
    Can you Jets fans imagine?
We do not hire Cowher because we want to keep Mikey Mouse.

If this story is true, I am taking a brake till WOODY gets the hell away from this TEAM.

  19. avatar Nikolas says:

Woody is not running Johnson and Johnson for a very good reason. He is not even a good business man.

  20. avatar sec314 says:

good point on the jnj reference. woody is a dope. ive said it before and ill say it again, he’s not the sharpest football mind in the business. if a guy like cowher agrees to come here on the condition of GM status, you give it to him. i think he’s earned it.

  21. avatar Murry Angelino says:

The next Jet fan nightmare: They hire Cowher as coach and GM and the team falls flat in 2009. Given the team’s miserable history, it sounds just right.

  22. avatar Ben says:

I think the reason the jets are keeping brian shotty bis because rhey want to bring in his dad, honestly. Either way if they make brian hc i think there iwll be alot of empty seats at the meadowlands next year

  23. avatar geo says:

pound4pound hit the nail on the head w/ his remarks…i don’t agree with absolutre power for Cowher. too much for one person.

on the other hand, if cowher wanted say in personnel OR hand pick a GM; that’s a different story altogether.
woody would be an idiot to let Cowher go under those circumstances.

    i guess Spagnolo is next!

  24. avatar tazzelrik says:

    Bill Callahan
    —————————————————————————

Should be the jets next head coach.

  25. avatar gang green says:

I still think we are over looking the obvious Parcell because everything he touches turns to gold, possible homgren because he has had 7 years coaching FAVRE,and Spagnoula if the Jets are looking for a good coach that the front office will be able to have control over,,,,IF all else fails we may get Schotty or Callahan….Me personally I think the best choice if he is willing to co-operate with Micheal T would be Cowler as to he runs the 3-4,is a proven winner and field general, and has the discipline and experience that players, assistent coaches, and the fan base will respect…Remember Jet fans Woody is trying to sell PSLs and keep the staduim packed if he makes another bone head move with the HC he chooses it’ll hurt him right where he doesnt want it IN HIS WALLET>>>>

  26. avatar matt says:

tanny or cowher you have got to be kidding me

  27. avatar matt says:

tanny or cowher you have got to be kidding me woody

  28. avatar gang green says:

Picture this one too I can see in now…Parcells and Mike T in the war room this spring You all know that with those two working in conjuction with one another were deffinitely going to get some awesome young talent out of the draft without the question marks we got with (GHOLSTON)…This year was a good year for veteran talent…. this next preseason its time to bring in the youth that can put speed and explosiveness on the field for the JETS

  29. avatar geo says:

its being reported Cowher wanted to appoint his own personnel director, which is obviously a WORLD of a difference than himself handling both jobs.

if woody loses Cowher b/c he wants to keep Tannenbaum – he is a moron! the sage that is poor management & the Jets continues…sheesh! someone save us fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. avatar Mike G says:

If you (Mangini) and I (Tannenbaum) worked for the same company and you explained to me what you needed to get the job done and I tugged on the owners ear to spend millions for the tools you said you needed and you failed to produce with those tools the owner would have to overlook my stupidity in that reguard, and see if I produced in any other area of my job which would be the draft and I think tannenbaum did a pretty good job there. Enough to keep his job. As far as Cowher wanting to bring in his people I don’t think that is carved in stone on both sides of the ball yet… stay tuned.

  31. avatar Igs says:

Cowher’s draft history with the Steelers is not so great. i’d be a little wary about handing him te keys to the kingdom.
