Paging Will Carroll: Favre Injury Update

ESPN again with the latest on Favre’s arm issues:

* The problems stemmed from a torn biceps muscle;
* He won’t need major surgery;
* He might even escape surgery althogether or could have a minor arthroscopic procedure;
* He is expected to take several weeks to decide whether or not he will return, by which time he will know the next Jets coach.

Biceps tear? What is this, the WWE?

  1. Bent;

Like battered wives lots andl lots of Jet fansdeserve to get Farve back next year.

This wuz “secretely” tell the media that he has requested an MRI after his lousy Dolphing outing.

  2. I don’t think the Dolphins game was the first time he looked lousy all year. It was for about 4-5 games, and even the few games before that he couldn’t make certain throws. I hate to be an I told you so, but he was clearly hurt for 8-9 games. He got hit hard in the Bengals game and I thought he tore his rotator cuff the way he winced and grabbed his wrist and stiffened the arm. Then the next week vs Oakland he got it hit again and I thought his season was over. The next few weeks with all those dinks and dunks — I think the staff knew he was hurt secretly, and his MRI was taken. They decided if he will play thru it, they will not let the opponents know. But it seems that they get paid a lot of money to watch film, and they figured out Favre’s new weakness, and he was in a lot of pain, causing him to lose accuracy on his deep balls. He would throw a couple out there hoping for a miracle, or to keep the opponents honest, but they were prayers unanswered. Maybe if he didn’t sit on his rear end all offseason thinking he was retired, he’d be in good shape like the year before, when he was a workout hound in GB in the 07 offseason.

A strong offseason workout plan this year and I’ll take a motivated Favre back — with a new HC. It would be very sweet and ironic if the Jets can get to the promised land NEXT year with Brett and not lose a pick for it.

  3. Take him out back and shoot him….

    HE IS DONE

  4. Bookie

I AGREE COMPLETELY…. STAY AT HOME AND NEVER COME BACK.

HE IS THE T.O. OF QB’s

  5. For some reason I have this weird feeling He’s coming back

  6. He’s coming back – you get a coach here that respects him and dump Coles and the other detractors and you will see new life in Favre.

Mangini and him did not click.

  7. Mangini named his kid after him….

    Hows that for clicking….

SHOOT HIM NOW…. END HIS OWN MISERY

  8. With a new coach in place, am I crazy to think that Coles might be rejuvenated? Having said that, I am quite high on Stuckey as a potential replacement for him!

  9. Make no mistake about it. Woodpecker will beg him back even if he has to massage his muscle every night. He need$ that “positive net, net ” from Farve.

  10. Favre won’t announce his intentions until he sees who the new HC is and unfortunately, Woody and Tanny seem to be OK with that.

Old, overrated interception machine – please ride off into the Mississippi sunset.

  11. i agree – good riddance. i hope we sign cowher quickly and tell brett, “thanks, but no thanks”. get the hell out

what i dont understand is how he could play / be allowed to play with such an injury? i cant speak from personal experience, but i would think a torn bicep would be very painful and certainly performance-affecting for a QB. it was either a complete lack of accountability for the coaching staff / trainers to let him play, or very selfish on favre’s part to keep playing to the detriment of the team. i would guess it is a little of both.

in hindsight – when the jets were sitting on an 8-3 record, they had to know that anything better or equal to 2-3 down the stretch would get us in. we certainly could not have gotten worse play from the QB spot the last 5 weeks. att he first sign of trouble, why not sit favre to heal up?? well of course not, that would break his starts streak! we let him have his way and go 1-4 (should have been 0-5)

remember this was very similar to the mid 2000s when he was playing terribly with a injured thumb and the packers suffered the same fate

  12. He probably torn his bicep making that ridiculous dive to make a tackle after one of the most horrible INT in the history of the league. A F-ing screen pass?? He can probably fish and mow grass with one arm….Please go home to Miss!!

  13. How could he play? The same way Chad played with his injury down the stretch in 2004. Herm and the Jets did everything to disguise that one too.

  14. Bookie:

It is just incredible, just crazy !!!

How would you like to be reminded of the guy that got you fired every time you call your son?

  15. We’ll probably never know when he got hurt and how much it affected him. And I will preface this by saying Favre made some awful decisions down the stretch that were in no way a result of the injury (i.e. the screen pass INT against miami) – BUT, I tore my biceps muscle a few years back playing softball and I couldn’t even imagine throwing a football 10 feet with that pain. I mean, hell, I took off from my job and I work in an office. And with Favre’s rehab history, you would guess he couldn’t take painkillers right? Who knows on that.

Anyway, I give a lot of credit to anyone who would play with that – just another reason we should have stayed a running/play action team.

  16. change the kids name to Donald..(Trump)…your fired!!!!

  17. Wow…a Jets QB gets hurt during a lost season…what are the odds of THAT happening!!

  18. And Pennington leaves and stays healthy for 16 games Bubby. What can you do.

  19. Ok now I definitely hope he comes back. Think about it, if he was hurt down the stretch and it won’t take much for him to come back healthy, we could (best case scenario) get the Brett Favre we saw in the Arizona and New England games. Worst case scenario, we’ve still got Clemens and Ratliff, it’s not like we’d have to get rid of them, so what do we have to lose? It’s one thing if we still had Chad, but between Brett Favre and Brett Ratliff seems like a no-brainer.

  20. Yeah whatever when Ed Reed and co. are done with you guys, you’re gonna wish you lost last week

  21. Congrats Jethater…Lets hope the Ravens dont assault Pennington and the Phins before the game even starts.

  22. oh never mind the comment I was responding too got deleted

  23. Wow, Jet was deleted fast….lol

  24. The deleted comment was revenge for all the trash talk by Jets fans apparently on a fins site. We don’t do that and discourage all our readers from doing so too.

Congratulations to the fins, but we have more important things to worry about now.

  25. agreed, let’s not sink to their level

  26. favre has two choices.

    1. retire
    2. play for the jets.

if woody johnson has any say in it, favre wil be back for sure.

oh wait, woody has all the say in it on this end. so here’s my bold prediction lock of the offseason. favre will be back in 09.

wouldn’t you know it – there a re plenty of PSL’s to sell.

  27. I would have said last year his two choices were retire or play for the packers, so you never know. I hope you’re right though. It’s not just about PSLs, it’s also about the Jets failing to draft and develop a better option at quarterback

  28. Bent, Stuckey over Clowney?

  29. By the way, the coaching staff could’ve done their sore-armed QB a favor by running more and designing more passes for a more ball-control offense. Instead, Schotty was having Favre trying to hit WRs in stride in the snow 20 yards downfield. And, in effect, benching his favorite target for a crucial road game in the snow sure didn’t help matters.

  30. I think they did to an extent and the defenses started to squeeze up on the shorter routes (notice how Keller was never open over the last few games?)

Stuckey and Clowney is not like versus like so hard to compare. As a replacement for Coles, Stuckey strikes me as ideal because he makes similar plays. Clowney is a deep threat and should therefore be the 3rd wide receiver (if he develops as expected) with Stuck moving to the slot in 3WR sets. Thoughts?

If you’re asking who will ultimately be the better pro, I’d say Stuck will be more productive but (hopefully) Clownz will make more impact plays.

  31. Steve, while I’ve seen enough of KC and don’t think he’s a bona fide NFL starter, what’s wrong with Ratliff and/or Ainge? It’s just possible that the Jets have and are developing another QB. Problem is, unless the veteran starter retires or is injured, the veteran usually beats out the draftee, unless we’re talking about a 1st rounder, and even then coaches often choose the vet, like Collins or Warner. Where the Jets pick in the first round, it’s doubtful that they’ll get a chance to draft a premier QB prospect. If Favre is healthy and wants to play, he’ll start. I just hope he’s willing to accept a reduced, incentive laden contract.

BTW, I heard that even if there’s not an uncapped year, the salary cap will grow substantially. So, the Jets should be able to afford Favre and more free agents.

  32. Bent, I think the season ended in Seattle. In that game, the DBs had to be so cautious in the snow and the LBs concerned about the run. So, I thought the Seattle game was perfect for Keller. Remember Franks’ wide open drop?

I think Stuck is a classic slot WR because he’s so good in traffic, while Clowney is a classic deep-threat WR, so you want him split out to make the FS play deeper. I think Clowney, Stuckey, Cotchery and Keller have complementary skills that would make them very hard to defend in single set back formations. And, if you make Leon the single set back, you have the makings of a very dangerous passing attack, but Leon has to learn how to block blitzers better, like Kevin Faulk.

  33. Well, they will have cap space, but they have a ton of free agents to make decisions on (and did a bunch of backloading in 2008), so don’t expect money to be *that* freely available.

Also, it’s all relative. If the Jets (once they have filled all their core needs – ie re-signed or replaced each free agent) are in a worse off position that most other teams (which they are likely to be), then they will not be able to outbid anyone, it will just drive up the prices. You can end up overpaying for crap (because you have to settle for second best) in such scenarios.

That’s why I was in full agreement with the Jets approach of bringing money forward instead of signing second rate free agents in 2006 and 2007 when money was tight (imagine if they gave a big money deal to Jeb Putzier or Ben Utecht as was discussed).

  34. Agreed on all counts.

Unfortunately, Seattle was one of the few games I missed, but I understand Keller was in the doghouse. Did they cut off their nose to spite their face with that move?

Come to think of it, didn’t they de-activate Stuck too (and he would have also been ideal, based on what you were saying).

  35. SackDance99, there’s nothing necessarily wrong with Ratliff or Ainge, we just don’t really know what they can do (preseason doesn’t count for anything). With Favre, we know he’s not the same quarterback he used to be, but we also know he has won a superbowl and understands what it takes to win. If his arm is healthy, he could still be a pretty good quarterback. If not, then we’ll see what Ratliff has to offer.

  36. Vinny Testaverde should serve as a reminder to the jets of how a 40+ year old QB plays.

Move on to the KC era.
    Then the Ratty era.
    Then, the Ainge era.

  37. If we could get from Favre what Carolina got from Testaverde his last year, I’d take that

  38. No way Favre would sit out a game for an injury unless he was extremely hurt. His consecutive games streak is his favorite record, and I would bet there isn’t a single thing in this game more important to him………..other than a superbowl.

  39. BigKat,

If that happens than the Jets will secure a reputation of chewing up and spitting out QB’s, not the best image you want to have.

But I’m sure Ainge will be the next johnny unitas.

  40. His consecutive game streak is his favorite record and there’s nothing more important???even favre’s fans are shootin him in the foot, hahaha! Boy, I reaaly want him to come back now, personal accomplishments before the team….such class! I guess that pre game speech summed it up huh?……pathetic

  41. What’s pathetic about being tough enough for 17 years to play though injury? You must be a closet Brady fan. He couldn’t even make it through the first game of the year.

It takes a lot of toughness to accomplish what Favre has with the consecutive games streak. He’s #1 all time in a lot of categories, but I would have to agree that this is one record that may never be surpassed.

Nothing before the team. The most important thing is winning (superbowl would be the obvious result of winning)

Take a deap breath, I don’t want the Favre issue to give you aneurism

  42. Sammy G:

Toughness?? Have you ever taken continuos dosage of Vicodin, Oxicontin or Darvon?
They can saw off your arm and you wont feel it. The minute that streak is stopped he will retire that season.

  43. hank you’re a mangenious.

Favre could possibly be done, but might have 1 or max 2 years left so when you state that when the streak ends you have to assume the guy is banged up pretty good, and it would make sense that it would be his last year since I’d put the odds (assuming he plays next year) at 80% chance one more year and 20% chance 2 more years.

In short, you didn’t really go out on a limb on that projection.

  44. Sammy G:

Thanks for calling me a mangenious. That means i would probably get fired now.

  45. Yeah Favre was an interception machine, but hank, do you honestly think favre isn’t tough?

I can’t think of a tougher QB than Favre?

Remember Sapp going after Favre, and Favre bounced back up as Sapp is struggling to get his fat ass up?

Just this year, Favre and Hayensworth go down, Hayensworth stays down.

Yeah he sucked this year, but you can’t deny the guy is tough.

  46. Sammy G:

You are riight, farve has some great attributes and toughness is one of them, however I felt from the start that he would not fit Mangini’s regime. He was too big, too carefree, too unscripted and it ultimately got him fired.
Woodypecker needed to win NOW and the offense never got in synch, well maybe two games,

I guarantee you that the owner will do anything to get Farve back next year if only for PR and marketing reasons.I do not think we will go far in the win column with him because teams know he can’t beat them deep consistently anymore. Also, I’m not to sure about team chemistry will work out even with a new Manager.
I felt all along that we will lose about two years with Brett farve.

  47. Sammy G

PS. I have been posting all season the reasons why I felt this move was a bad fit but I’ve been discarded as a Farve hater and Pennington/Dolphins fan.
But, you know what, I’m not surprised, desillusioned or crushed by this debacle. It hurt when the Jets went down, because I’ve been a fan since before Joe Willy and the great promise this team had in July…… after the greatest off season this team EVER had.
My consolation is that I can still root for Pennington and I loved it when Chad stuck it deep up woodypeckers butt. I hope he loses Million$$$$$.
