Junk Drawer Post Apocalyptic Edition

by Bassett on December 30th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

I’m sitting in the terminal at Richmond International Airport (props for the free wireless!) waiting for my flight back to Boston and after a family visit and I wanted to say a few junk drawer thoughts after the jump …

Tannenbaum a Realist – I had the chance to talk to some folks who are a little more in the know than I am today. I’ll write more about this later, but Tannenbaum realizes that he’s not the one who signs his own paychecks and he also realizes that he’s not going to get one like he does anywhere else any time soon. so he might be more willing to step aside for someone like Cowher than you might expect. The problem then becomes why do you pay an EVP that salary if he has no real responsibilities … we’ll try and address that later.

Travelling Rest of Today — Although we’ll be travelling and meeting a cousin tonight once we’re back in Boston and out of commission until the wee hours, there will be others who will do their best to post and update you should anything need to. I am going to take the disconnected time to try and tie as much ofthis whole scenario together as best I can for you and look forward to your comments. In the meantime, keep the dialog going in the comments, thanks for everyone’s vigilance and updates as situations have unfolded!

Record Breaking Days — I was shocked last night when I counted just around A THOUSAND comments during a 36 hour period between the end of the game Sunday and last night .. utterly unbelievable. You commenters are the reason that this blog is as sucessful as it is, and that is a fact.

Although we all often disagree, we’re all mostly Jets fans here so I’m so humbled to that you take the time to come here to find out what’s going on, and to voice your own opinions about this team and the future of it. I can never say this enough, but thank you to each and every reader, double thank yous to those who take the time to comment, and triple thank you to the talented staff of other bloggers who have helped out all season!!

Thank YOU Bassett, Bent, and contributors. Great site for Jets fans in these trying times. Keep up the good work.

Mike T is a good GM, but he sold out his BFF, I can’t even do that, I think just give Cowher the money and the Power, but Mike ain’t leaving, if he takes a reduced role, it is kinda like paying him for sitting on his all day, as Bassett said. I still think we should burn Mikes house down but let’s wait and see, and I say NO to Spagnola, I mean come on are we gonna switch schemes every 3 years, it’s just plain stupid

    P.S.
    We love you too bassett

to rip off fatcessa, one way to judge a gm or coach is to see how long he would be out of work.

tannenbaum would get another gm job in a heartbeat. parcells tried to get him a number of times.

  4. avatar steviek says:

    also on cowher and personnel…
the steelers were very good at letting some really good players go throught the years to manage the cap and replacing them almost seemesly through the draft, especially on defensive front 7.

was cowher instrumental in that or was that because of other people? if he wants more personnel say that he had in pitt, have to think the latter. if he has no personnel track record in geting guys, should he be given keys to the entire thing?

  5. avatar rj says:

thank you guys for the constant updates!

NYCKAGE… who cares if he sold out his supposed best friend? Would I do that? No, but do I want the guy controlling the decisions on the Jets able to do that, YES

  6. avatar nyckage says:

    rj

Yea we do need a guy like that, but I have a feeling he did it to save his own job, I mean come on he screwed up with his choice of free agents ( although he did a great job) he took alot of old guys who ran out of steam at the end of the season, but I still think Mike is a good Gm and we should try to keep him

  7. avatar Electric Ham says:

Mike t didnt make any decisions Woody wanted mangini fired to please the fans so he can sell his psl’s and made Mike T take the blame for it so he wouldnt look like an ahole. Tanny wanted Mangini to stay.

  8. avatar rj says:

nyckage – I think the firing came from Woody more then Tanny I would hope he did not throw Mangini under the bus but I wouldnt expect him to say “its neither of us or both of us”

  9. avatar Pete57 says:

Tannenbaum didn’t sell out anyone. Mangini did a terrible job and got fired for it. As was stated above, I’m glad we have an owner and a gm who will hold people accountable, even if they have a close personal relationship with them. Go get Cowher. I think he wants to coach in NY because both his daughters are here. I’m sure a relationship with Tannenbaum can be worked out. If Cowher balks, I hope we talk to Billick, but I haven’t seen his name mentioned yet.

  10. avatar SAMIAMSPORTS says:

lets say Cowher and Spags both want the job, obviosly Big bad Bill gets the nod simply bec of his experiance pedigry. But is this the right move? dont you think Spags’s Defensive mind paired with his explosive annimated attitude would be a great fit for this lack luster defensive team?
Plus, i hate to say it . but if we get cowher, doesnt that give the Jets Higher expectations?
I rather have lower expectations and be pleasently suprised than high expectations and be dissapointed…..

  11. avatar Najy says:

    Interesting turn of events…

  12. avatar nyckage says:

    Scott

that is the stupid choice for HC the jets could ever make

  13. avatar Drew says:

Wow….Shanny just got fired from Denver

  14. avatar Nikolas says:

Tannenbaum is selling you the Brooklyn Bridge over and over. I’ve never met football fans so naive and easy to sell; Attached to failure and love for the boss. I would love to employ some of you…..you know in these hard times. You are so cute, exploitable and abuse-able. Anyone unemployed?

  15. avatar Scott says:

dont want spag…we finally axed vilma and have the players for a 3-4 and you wanna switch again to a 4-3?

  16. avatar Scott says:

Why do you think it’s so stupid?

  17. avatar gavinskeen says:

Shanahan adds an interesting wrinkle now – though he would almost definitely want full control as he has now.

  18. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

I might want Shanahan more than cowher. I can’t believe the broncos canned him after nearly winning the division with a 7th string running back who was selling cell phones in October.

  19. avatar Chris says:

I agree- Shanahan is much more valuable than Cowher. He develops much better offensive gameplans which means we can finally shed this West Coast conservative non-sense that has been awful for years.

With a decent defensive coordinators- Shanny would be a gift!

  20. avatar Drew says:

Cowher cannot never had a good offense and Shanny never had a good defense. It a coin toss for me

  21. avatar psorlando says:

The Jets are always chasing their tails (i.e. someone else’s made star). Now their chasing the Steelers ‘made star’ in Cowher. Why can’t we make our own stars for a change? The Jets’ issue with hiring coordinators, is that they have made bad or mediocre hires. The right coordinator for HC is out there this off-season and someone else may end up getting him (or them) and create their own HC ‘star’. Tannenbaum is a young GM who has made very good player personnel moves in his short tenure. Letting him go in the process of chasing Cowher will be a mistake. Some other team will offer him a GM shot in short order. I believe Spagnuolo will be a great HC. But for Cowher however, it may not be for the Jets. And the losing beat will go on.

  22. avatar cbiscuit says:

Quit whining orlando, no one is talking about letting Mr. T go, just reducing some of his responsibilities if we indeed do get Cowher – which is not likely. With a stadium to fill, PSLs to sell, and some expensive players on the field, Woody is clearly in ‘win now’ mode which means we need a coach with Super Bowls on their resume. Shanahan coming out is a big plus.

  23. avatar nyckage says:

    psorlando

That’s what we did with mangini, And how do you think that turned out? They are trying to get proven guys like Cowher and Shanhan, but I think Shanhan has bad idea written all over it, this guy should have been fired along time ago, because how he colapsed in 2006 and this year, I think we had enough of that.

And Spags is a bad idea we just switched to the 3-4, and is Harris a 4-3 guy, are we going to have to trade him too if the 4-3 doesn’t work for him, and if we go to the 4-3 that just adds more area of needs, we will need a DT next to big Jenks, we are fine with the 3-4 right now, all we need to do is put a LB next to Harris and we will be fine and we needa safety also, so we can’t go back to the 4-3

  24. avatar psorlando says:

nyckage…as I said, Mangini and the other previous coordinators were bad or mediocre hires. I for one hope all these name HCs turn them down. As for the 4/3 vs. 3/4, you really think their D is so much better one way or the other? How did their lack of a pass rush work for you? How about their run D, how about their pass D? They happen to have players who came from the 4/3. Harris and all the rest of them played it in college! Their DE’s contribute no push. Gholston will probably have a much better chance of succeeding as a 4/3 end like he was in college.

  25. avatar gsteigs says:

shanahan got fired becouse he couldnt do the job of head coach and gm, holmgren su@@ed also as gm and coach you just cant do it its to much work each guy the coach and gm work around the clock . Dan reeves s@cked in atlanta . if we give total control to one of theses guys they will s@ck here also

  26. avatar Jeff says:

Why do I feel that Mangini come back as the D Coordinator of the PAts and completely crush us for the next 3yrs? Then becomes head coach and wins @ superbowls??
