Keep Your Eye on the Ball, Mike
…because I know you’re reading this.
While the head coaching search is, of course, crucial to the Jets’ short to long term future, Mike Tannenbaum must not neglect some other matters which need attending to. Namely, signing some players to futures contracts.
Expect the Jets to announce that they have signed guys who spent the year on the practice squad or injured reserve and should figure in their plans next year, such as Kareem Brown, Jehuu Caulcrick, Kenwin Cummings, Ropati Pitoitua and Brandon Renkart within the next week or so. The Pats and Broncos have already done this, for example. Can it wait until a new coaching hire is made? I don’t know.
By the way – RED ALERT – the futures contracts of Brett Ratliff and David Clowney have now expired.
UPDATE: I did some digging and apparently, because they were on the active roster at the end of the season, Clowney and Ratliff will remain under contract until March, but will then become unrestricted free agents, so that red alert still applies. (The bulb just isn’t flashing any more and we turned off the siren to conserve electricity).

cheers to robbie keane too

The Ratliff one doesn’t surprise me, what does however is this Clowney ordeal. He’s got too much Mr August in him, with the one beautiful one handed catch in what, week 14 or 15? You know if there’s one thing that is going to continue to kill us it is the fact that bombs from anyone to Jerricho or Laverneus aren’t too successful because both of them are much better possession receivers. Neither of them have that top end speed that truly separates a defense, which is supposedly what this kid had. Not any rookie can break his collarbone and make it back with mangini or schottenheimer and get a couple snaps on offense because of their infatuation with Brad Smith but that’s another story my fellows.

BRETT HOLDS JETS HOSTAGE….OBAMA TO SEND TROOPS
-
roof-
hate to say it but…. told you so.
here’s to only 1 left coast trip next year -
Signing Ratiff and Clowney should be a priority, hopefully the next coach sees the potential in these two.

MSNBC is reporting a new hostage situation in New York. The one where Brett is holding the Jets….film at 11

Yea the Jets have to sign Ratliff, they need a good backup just in case the next the Jets get cute and get some other guy like Cassal or someone, Clowney has to be resigned, it has to be our # 2 priority after resigning Leon
-
I hope you are reading this Mike, get Cowher, even if you have to give up some of your power
-
Mike better take care of business because he might not be around next week if you listen to the news… No number 4 next year please, take that 12-14 million in cap space and improve this team.
I would love Cowher in here and give him all the control he wants. That guy is money.
Ratliff and Clowney need to be kept….period
Also, roof–you like Robbie when he plays for Liverpool or Ireland?

I thought I was the only one in the world who noticed these guys (Ratiff and Clowney) . I hope they keep Tannenbaum. I think he is a good dealer. He is not afraid to shake things up. I am not a big Favre fan. I think he was brought in and Eric is toast because of the new stadium. They need to sell seats and they will do anything to keep the fans happy. Even though it might not be the best for the future of the team. I like the defensive coordinator for the Giants for the new coach. Much happening lets hope for the best.

I’m sure we can sign them to reasonable extensions – and hopefully the next regime will know how to use Clowney.
Here’s a question for everyone that I don’t think has come up – who is our kicker next year? Guessing it will be Nugent – anyone know his contract situation?
-
I don’t think Ratliff is on a lot of other teams’ radars either. It will be interesting, because if we don’t make a real effort to resign him, that would demonstrate they don’t believe in him as much as we think they may, and they are the ones who see him each day. I don’t think that is the case though.
Thanks for the Nugent info, I am sure we will just resign him. We’ll see who punts too – it would be nice to finally get some stability out of that spot. Lechler is a FA – while I wouldn’t advocate putting a lot into signing a FA punter, with so many games coming down to a few points and field position it is more important than ever. I would go after him if the price is reasonable.

PROBLEM
Bill Cowher doesn’t want to coach in 2009, reported by Adam Schefter
http://blogs.nfl.com/2008/12/30/cowher-wont-be-on-a-sideline-in-09/
-
That’s not reporting. That’s opinion
-
If I had a dime for every time Schefter reported his opinion as news…
I could buy the Jets and hire Ditka.
-
Brett Ratliff by far outplayed Kellen Clemens yet he is still third stringer hopefully someone can correct that situation and give Clowney playing time next season, give him the chance and he will give positive results…. Important players to keep in New York.

Ratliff and Clowney need to be signed, even though both of them only looked good in preseason (excluding Clowney’s great grab in week 15) they can be signed for little money which is well worth the potential reward either of them can bring to the team. Ehh, Farve, didn’t like it first time around, don’t like it now. We need a QB that will be here for a while so he can learn the new system and get game time experience. Don’t need a laser/rocket arm just a good QB who screws up as little as possible.

I agree we must retain clowney and ratiff,,,you all missed another diamond in the ruff with Danny WoodHead…THIS KID IS SPECIAL and if not for anything else should be beside leon on kickoff returns and swapped in and out for punt returns…a good coach should be able to find a way to use a guy with sub 4.3 speed…

I’m a big fan of Jehuu Caulcrick. He is our future fullback. He is a tank who can block, catch the ball out of the backfield, and blast it in near the endzone. He has a great opportunity to learn behind Tony Richardson.
I have to say, Ratliff looked real good in pre-season. More than once and for long stretches. I’ll never understand why, after seeing the talent in the pre-season, the coaching staff ignored it and never even gave these players a shot. Murrell, Brown, Clowney, Ratliff, Caulcrick, & Cummings should have been given a look.

ESPN just reported that Cowhers agent said he turned down the opportunity to interview with the Jets. Supposedly the Jets have released a statement confirming that statement. Cowher said hes not ready to coach this year
-
Brett Favre should have been released – this cheese head brought the Jets down by his interceptions. If he stays believe me – he will insult the Jets again by his stupid thinking. Sorry he is too old now and there are much better younger quarterbacks. Firing Mangini was just a way for Mike Tannenbaum to save his face. Mike was the guy who got Brett – horrible – this is what life is. Heard that Mangini was expressionless – so what – that is how a coach should be. I wish coach Mangini all the best and for bringing such excitement to the Jets. Check out Jet fans, Jets will never be able to beat New England Patriots on from here if Brett is the quarter back.

We need to sign Clowney and Ratliff. Clowney has a real future and Brett Ratliff I believe is better than Clemens, just from what I saw in the preseason, and that one catch along in week 14 (I think it was week 14), was enough for me to want to keep him. Also, all this negative Brett Favre talk, if he hears it, will do nothing more than entice that guy everyone hates to much to come back for another season to prove us all wrong…I hope it does (proves us wrong, that is). Either way, Clowney and Ratliff need to be signed to long-term deals!

thats the brett we need to keep.
