Erik Boland reports today on Newsday.com that the Jets realize that Favre is like politics, religion and shellfish. In other words, he’s a polarizing topic.
… a source familiar with the organization’s thinking regarding Favre said that’s not necessarily the case.
“While they’re open to Favre returning, Woody Johnson and Mike Tannenbaum believe whomever we hire as the new coach should have significant input on that decision,” the source said.
Translation: The new coach will not have Favre forced upon him.
Wise move, Mr. (or Ms.) Source. It only took two days for the Jets to realize that the only emphatic part of the Mangini firing press conference on Monday was the endorsement of Favre. Potential coaching candidates might not have been thrilled to know that to take over a job in NY meant the distinct possibility of inheriting a QB who has been a source of polarization for his past two (Mangini, McCarthy) coaches. It would take either a very strong or very foolish person to knowingly do so.
So, the team has caught on finally, and is now (un)officially speaking out of both sides of their mouth, saying that even though they do want him back (Woody on Monday) he doesn’t necessarily need (“source” on Wednesday) to come back.
So which is it? It’s a savvy move to throw it out there anonymously, but it’s just this sort of wishy-washiness that could turn off coaches like Cowher
… that and the Denver job without a real GM opening up …

Bassett, please explain to me how your article makes sense.
Favre has another year on his contract. If we don’t want him, we have to cut him or trade him.
If we cut him, he would likely go to the Bears or Vikes who are miserable at QB and play in the NFC north. The poison pill would go into effect, ruining our drafts for the next two years.
So, who is going to take on Favre’s 12 million contract with his arm woes and performance?
Really!

SAME OLD JETS!!!!!
-
It is all BS. They send different signals to confuse the fans.
They never wanted Cowher!!!Woody wants to have total control over his toy.
-
Does this mean Cowher might re-think coming to the Jets?
-
I am fine with the Jets talking out the both sides of their mouth. If thats the alternative to structuring next year around what Brett Favre wants to do, double talk is find with me. I think Woody Johnson is delusional if he thinks Favre will sell seats next year. I have to believe season ticket holders and potential PSL are Jets fans and thus know how inept Favre was this past year. I would like to see them bring in Shanahan to coach and Crennel to run the defense. I don’t know if that would fly with Shanahan but if the Jets can swing it I think the Jets could make an impact in the immediate future.
-
Shanny is a control freak he is going to want total control wherever he goes, possibly KC if they get rid of Herm, so he can stick it to Denver and Oakland twice a year.
-
I thought Cowher coming to the Jets was a done deal. Now, I’m not too sure. It seems that there’s too much hesitancy on both sides and I agree with Woody that GM and HC are two full-time positions and having the HC do both is a recipe for disaster. Unless both sides bend, I don’t see Cowher coming here.
Under the Rooney Rule, Woody must interview minority candidates. There’s a current Jets coach that merits consideration: Bryan Cox. Cox is a Parcells guy, from the Parcells/BB tree (he won a ring with the Pats . He’s the type of coach that many of us want to see: no-nonsense, passionate and fearless. He would hire Romeo as DC, leave Schotty as OC and possibly lure Parcells to be in an executive capacity. We know that he’d command respect in the lockerroom and we know he’d kick some butts if he had to. Lots of folks praised Singletary, Cox would be similar, but from a better coaching tree.
Any thoughts?
-
Cox has only been coaching for 3 years and hasn’t risen above “assistant D Line coach” yet.
I know we’re considering coaches without HC experience yet, but i’d like to see someone who has at least HEAD d line coach experience. :)
-
bryan cox? from what i’ve seen definitely would be a “players coach,” not exactly an calm hand in decision making and zero offensive or special teams pedigree. there have to be more qualified assistants out there.
-
SackDance99,
The NFL is a copy cat league. This year, the theme will be hiring coaches that show emotion, no nonsense, and have character.
Another theme for the year is that young coaches can be successfull, so teams will not be hesitant to hire rookie coaches to get the job done.
As an organization, we cannt get caught up in all that. Mangini commanded respect and al the players still respect him. He was a players coach but well respected by his team.
NOT ONE SINGLE PLAYER HAS SAID ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT MANGINI SINCE HE GOT FIRED!!
Dont you think that is respect?
Personally, since we fired Mangini and cant go back to the past, I would like to move on and hire a coach that has experience and a proven track record of winning games.
Anything less than that will not justify the firing of Mangini. Woody and Tanny said they wanted to change direction. I interpreted that as they want an expereinced head coach.
Hiring an experienced head coach with a proven track record of winning big games is the only way they can justify firing Mangini. IMO.
-
just get us Mike Shanahan. I don’t care if he wants personnel control from Mr. T. I don’t care if he wants to go back to a 4-3 defense. I don’t care if he wants 15 million a year.
just get it done.
-
A good candidate for HC but I also think he fills the Rooney Rule , Leslie Frazier DC for Minn.
-
FIRE TANNENBAUM!!!!
-
Brandon, obviously you don’t care what defense Shanahan wants to run, neither does he, its the ONE thing he’s proven over the last 10 years besides the fact that using a borderline illegal/ cheap shot zone blocking scheme can turn just about any ball carrier into a a success. If we hire Shanny defense will be the afterthought, and for those who think we can demand he hire a certain DC forget that too, he refused to fire his current DC in Denver as part of the reason he got the axe.
But hey, by all means, lets give him whatever he wants….

look who just won Comeback Player of the Year again
-
yes sec108.
whatever he wants. with cowher out of the running, shanahan is the ONLY elite option left.
after him, we’re talking about unproven coordinators and Marty Schottenheimer.
I don’t care if he wants to name you defensive coordinator.
just get it done.
-
Shanny failed with leading the personel decisions. He would make a good fit working as HC, not with all personel control. One thing is for sure, we should be able to run the damn ball with Shanny. Personally, after all his time coaching and the season he just had, he probably needs a long vacation.
-
Shanny makes me nervous, I’d rather they talked Marty Shott into coming or keep negotiating with Cowher. I know it’s a sore spot, but how many times did we hear that Favre was NOT coming here?
Maybe the same happens with Cohwer and we get him in the end – with better results of course. -
Brandon –
Fair point that he is the ONLY experienced option left, but is he really ELITE anymore?
I don’t know much about coordinating an NFL defense, but I doubt I could do much worse than Shanny’s staff the last 10 years.
-
Shanny is 5-2 against belicheat, including victories in 5 of the last 6 meetings. (best record of any active HC)
And Shanahan has made some very good personell decisions. The last few drafts have yielded Cutler, Hillis, Marshall, Royal..
-
sec 108.
he is elite. career record: 146-98. And unlike Marty, he’s got a winning post season record (8-5)
-
With the exception of Clady, Marshall, and Royal, who has Shanny drafted in the last decade that warrants any discussion. He won with the team that Reeves left him. Why the obsession with a big name like Shanny, like I said in another post, look at the 3 playoff teams this year that had losing records last year and have frankly not widely known new head coaches.
-
shanny is a brilliant OC but like davidi pointed out he failed having full control he’s a great game planner but theres more to it then just that when building a championship team ..and thats what we need .. but he’s gonna have to turn down the ego and bite the bullet and find his new niche for a lil while ..cowher was by far the better choice for a full control guy ..lets face it we’re gonna get stuck with another unknown or brian schottenheimer as the HC and god i hope its not gonna be schott even if his dad comes in a HC the guy has no ingame instincts ..marty does ..but brian doesn’t ..yet at least

I am afraid that things are not going to turn out well. I am not superstitious, but I had a deep belief all along that when we released Chad he would come into the Meadowlnds and finish us. It seemed like the right retribution for injustice, greed, vanity, and thoughtlessness. But I also believed that the ensuing crisis would have been a blessing in disguise.; it would have led to radical changes that would take the franchise to the right path, the right direction.
Now I realize, that in order to turn a crisis into an opportunity a significant ingredient is required. Visionary Leadership, and I do not see it! If any of the trio ,Woody, Tanny, or Favre remain in position to exert influence on football matters, then my dear friends…I see no END! Our curse is lack of visionary leadership. -
I just want an HC with better judgment. To me, a head coach is sort of like the President. As this past election shows, the fact that the candidate might not have much executive or legislative experience and is young does not matter to the public as much as intelligence and judgment. I threw Cox out there because I think he would just set a different tone for the team and I’d rather have a guy with a Jets link rather than a guy like Spags. Plus, I tossed his name out for debate purposes more than anything.
I do not want Shanny. As I posted yesterday:
I have 2 concerns with Shanahan, who I don’t want. First, he is 1-4 in the playoffs since Elway retired. Second, Denver has the most unique home field advantage in the NFL with the high altitude and thin air. Shanny built his Denver teams to exploit that advantage with smaller, quicker, more aerobically fit players. I don’t think that works in the East where size and smashmouth football is prevalent.
As an addendum, I don’t believe an HC should be GM, too. He can have his buddy as GM, but wearing both hats means usually one-side of the ball suffers and, with Shanny, that was the defense.
-
Shanny sells PSL’s…
-
Denver has mostly lousy defenses and hasn’t made the playoffs in 3 years. I think it’s time we all learn to focus on performance and not just the name (Brett Favre anyone?). Shanny is a big name who hasn’t gotten it done lately and frankly has been up and down since he lost Elway and then TD. I take Marty over him any day.
-
Mart had the most talent in the kleague the last 2 years in SD and never got it done. He scares me. Plus he is dying to get the Jets job and keep his dumb kid around to call the plays.
-
Marty loses in the playoffs every year. his MO is postseason disappointment.
Shanahan may not have won a SB without Elway/TD, but you can say the same thing about everyone. how many SB’s has belicheck won without Brady.
-
Cox fits the mold of a coach already. He looks like he has gained 100 lbs since his playing days. He can where his pants high showing his big belly like most of these horrible looking head coaches
-
Neither Marty or Cowher have the post season credentials that Shanahan has, and I think they are both very comfortable in ‘retirement’. I don’t think he’d have problems working with Mr. T and he should be eager to prove his detractors wrong. Go get him.
-
Bent,
I thought flipping off Bills fans, who were yelling racial epithets, was actually good judgment…at least he didn’t throw a snow boulder! :-)
-
Shanahan’s “post-season credentials” were primarily authored by Elway and TD. Without Elway, Shanny is 1-4. Cowher, on the other hand, brought O’Donnell to the Super Bowl, Kordell to the AFC Championship game and won with Big Ben. So, I think Cowher in his 15 seasons has better post-season credentials: in 21 playoff games, he’s 12-9 and won his first playoff game his last 8 (of 10) playoff appearances. Shanny in his 14 Denver seasons had 13 playoff games and went 8-5 and in 4 of those seasons he was one and done. Cowher is the better post-season HC.
-
Brandon, judging from the way Cassell performed, I think BB just needs to firm up his defense and the Pats are back to 13 wins and a legitimate Super Bowl threat. I agree that Brady helped make BB greater, but this season convinced me that BB’s system can produce; it wasn’t just Brady. Like with Walsh’s 49ers system, it wasn’t just Montana.
-
Oh, and Shanny only had 7 playoff appearances in 14 seasons (50%), while Cowher had 10 in 15 seasons (66%). If the goal is to build a winner that regularly makes the playoffs and is a threat to win a Super Bowl, Cowher’s the better choice.
-
Bassett, my bad. Thank you for pointing out my lack of understanding. I would let the next coach pick his poison. If it were me, I would cut Favre and build for a SB in two years.
But that is me.

I only have one question that no one wants to ask or no one from the nyj organization speaks of, is how committed to winning is woody johnson? how important is it to him? If he wants to be like the krafts’, the rooneys, tich’s and the mara’s? all winners. he needs to look, take a microscopic look. Throughout my years as jets fan I only remember feeling a air of change in the right direction was when parcells came on. who thinks that the next coach hired is going to bring a small fraction of the great feeling we felt as jets fan when bill parcells took over. a feeling of change, stability.

The further Woody stays away from anything to do with the football part of the operation the better off they will be.
