Do You Want Favre Back? – The Results
Well, the results of our semi-scientific poll are in…

(I probably don’t have to tell you which one is me and which one is Bassett…)
Remember, Newsday ran a story yesterday saying that most Jets fans want Brett Favre back. Here are the results though:
In favor of Favre returning: 42
Against Favre returning: 177
Undecided: 4
Percentage in favor of Favre returning next year = 19%
Now, I can’t say with conviction that the majority are correct here, but with such damning evidence, what I can say is that the Newsday report was probably jumping the gun somewhat! Thank you to those of you (over 200 people) that responded.
N.B. Just an FYI, but the noted article at Newsday was not written by FOTJB Erik Boland, but another reporter.

Like we discussed earlier Bent the Newsday report porbably is polling all of the GB Favre fans that all of a sudden became Jet fans when their idol came here. 80% Nay sounds right. If you would have polled this after week 11 it would have been 100% Yes!!
I have a question, lets say Spagnulo does take the job, will it be announced? Since he still has a playoff to prepare for, and wouldn’t that mess up the attitude of the Giant D, who is playing for a guy who will ditch us at the end of the year?
I think Newsday’s sample size was a bit small, that’s all.
Not 100% yes. Hank and Fonzie wouldn’t have voted yes.
In fact, I might even have voted no myself. For me the financial aspect is the crucial one. I actually still believe he’ll have a decent year next year (perhaps for someone else), but not a year that justifies $13m when the team has other needs that the money could be used for.
Bent:
At week 11 we were 8-3 and there was plenty of talk of 12-4 and potential 2 seed. I think 13 million would have been a bargain for a 1st round playoff bye and a 2nd round home game.
I for one didnt think we had that many holes at 8-3 and coming off of the biuggest win in 2 years.
In saying that his 5 week slide convince me to stay away next year.
I’m a nay, but I don’t think it’s impossible he could have a good year next year. I just think it would take a Parcells or a Holmgren, someone who commands respect and who understands precisely how to use him at this stage of his career. And maybe a speedy receiver who can pull down jump balls, and a fair amount of luck. There are better ways to spend 13 million. However, if he is back, I’ll be back rooting for him to defy the odds and win.
You need to send these results to the newspaper and sports websites so they get more publicity. It’ll be picked up in a big way as this is pretty significant…we need to save Woody from himself.
Like I said in the survey, if chad or Kellen threw half as many int’s as favre, we would of called for their heads! If we could learn anything from Mangini(who I openly supported on this sight) is that we need to judge someone by a body of work, not just one or two good performances! Bretts body of work just didn’t impress anyone! Just remember, a lot of his poor performances got overlooked because we were winning! I sure hope in 09 we start developing one of our younger QB’s!
correction- supported mangini on this SITE!
just saying for all those mangini lovers, remember erik coleman, the saftey he ran out of town, well he’s got 100 tackles and 3 picks so nice job mangini
Here’s another good questions: WHo’s to say that a rookie quarter back with a new system, new style of coaching, and starting in his first season won’t throw 20+ picks….and i agree that 13 million is a big number with other needs on this Jet team but really who we going to sign in the free agent market that will make us feel all safe and warm at night.Ran down the list myself today and notta one jumped off the page and said PICK ME I’M a proven leader and winner….In my oppion the best choice at a franchisable quarter back at this time is CASSEL…Tell me he is a product of a system and i’ll tell ya he can be a product of our system too.I cant stand people who say he is a product of the system WHAT ELSE IS HE SUPPOSED TO BE>>>>>AND i love the fact that people say he is a backup are YOU going to bench BRADY and start anyother quarterback PERIOD in the league….I think not….For a team that everyone and their mother single out games against them in the preseason CASSEL played with better poise than 98% of the veteran quarter backs in the league….AND to think his defense was the oldest in the league and didn’t save his ass at all this year SIGN him before another team realize he can be the next ELWAY,MONTANA,or BRADY….I absolutely despise bill-a-cheat and the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS but i’ll take a proven, field tested, winning quarterback from any team willing to part with em……
PkoiZza
Yeah so, look at villa, john Abraham, or santana moss… You win some you lose some!
i kno tht, but wat have we recently won
oh yeah, and pete Kendall.
We’ve won in most of this past years free agent aquisitions, in my opinion, many may feel different though.
id rather have vinny back at QB than favre
Just a little warning from things I learned in stats- usually those who answer these polls are inclined towards the negative. So there may be some fans who want Favre back who didn’t respond to the poll while all those who didn’t want him back responded to it, which may skew the numbers. And nyckage, I believe the Jets can’t offer Spags a job until the Giants are eliminated- they can just interview him now so he won’t lose out on jobs if the team goes to the Super Bowl.
I’m against going back to the 4-3 but I think we we should nab Spags, but Rex Ryan is a good guy to look a, if you want to remain in the 3-4 which I think is the best choice for the Jets
Before you all curse Favre’s name, and run him outta town, think of the alternatives!!! Clemens? Maybe, but I would’nt bet on it!!! Ratliff? There’s an unfathomable difference between 3rd and 4th stringers, and the Varsity team, but you might catch lightning in a bottle!!! And last, Ainge? Seriosly, Come on!!! Give me a break!!! As far as the free agents are concerned, there is’nt much, AT ALL!!! O.k., people who’s it gonna be? I say give Favre another shot!!!! Not to mention, it would be an incredible waste of all those #4 jerseys out in circulation!!! lol!!!
USA Today published a database of 2008 NFL player compensation, helpfully broken down by base salary, bonuses, total salary and cap value. Further broken down by position.
Quarterbacks (ranked by cap value — or any other way you want so view it– just by clicking on the heading):
http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/playersbyposition.aspx?pos=132
Fauve was 4th in total salary and 5th in cap value. ($12 million either way).
Free Agent To Be (unless he’s tagged) Matt Cassell
had a cap value of $ 539 thousand. Pennington, $4. milliion.
Free Agent To Be Ratliff (apparently on January 15): $301 thousand.
The Jets apparently had only $1.95 million cap space left on December 20, according to:
http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary.html
So, its more than asking “Do you want him as the Jets quaterback?” as much as “Can the Jets afford him with all their other needs.”
It is possible that Tannenbaum has structured the cap in a way that it goes down some in 2009 (certainly Baker’s option won’t be picked up).
Since I’m not a cap expert, the “Can they afford him with all their other needs?” question is for a guru to opine on.
LukeV, ya forgot about Tyrone Carter, Aaron Glenn, and Kevin Mawae
For Favre returning
One more for NO!
I wasnt around to vote.
If Favre comes back i will no longer attend games.
really you guys know your just deluding yourself with this favre banter.
if brett favre wants to be a member of the NYJ’ s next year, then he will be. do you really believe the woodman passes on an extra year with a future HOF QB on the roster?
have many of you forgotten that there is a new staduim in 2010 to fill and tons of PSL’s to sell?
so, in order to feel smarter as i enter the new year, i ll vote yeah, just because its a done deal
bent – do you see a possibility of lowering favre’s cap number through restructuring or is the team stuck with that number?
jp
OK you vote yea…now give us your true feeling!!!
I just think it’s sad that people have to decline and retire. For athletes, the person (body and soul) is a built-in term limit. But you make room for the new talents and the new personalities, so you leave gracefully. Brett should surely do that now.
I bet Woddy paid the news papers off and had one sent to Favres house…
o man i missed that one. Why would you have such an important poll newyears eve? I mean dude gets like 100x more media coverage than the pope, so hes obviously the most important person on the planet right?? and if the jets suck it must be entirely because of him because its not like there are any other players that started celebrating new years like a month and a half too early. It’s not like we sucked last year with Kellen Clemens, so yeah it must be Brett he sucks he was never any good, put my man KC back in and we’ll awesome again like last year Yay! And while we’re at it, let’s go bring back that coach from usc hes doing pretty good. Ahh, new year, same jets, whatre ya gonna do
Thats right you scumbag!!!
FARVE YOU ARE A SCUMBAG AND THOSE WHO SUPPORT YOU ARE ALSO SCUMBAGS!!!!

you call this bs raise your hand if you feel one way or another a poll?
What a joke.
This in no way whatsoever represent Jets fans. For all we know there could be one person voting 20 times under different names.
That being said I hope Favre doesn’t come back.
Hey Fonzy, I read that article link that you posted.
Favre is a walking talking legend, and the rest of the team should be down on their knees to make sure he is happy. Everyone on the team couldn’t handle the fact that Favre was in the spotlight and the jealousy destroyed the team. Every player that used to be the “guy”, was reduced to a little pawn on Favre’s chess board.
Thanks for all the memories Favre, and I’m also thankful that you had your worst season of your career and it was on the pathetic New York Jets. And he still got you 9 wins. lol @ little jets fans you never will have a decent team.
Thanks, I know, I am pretty awesome. By the way I voted no 176 times just to mess with you guys. Gotcha!
What are you talking about? I’m still the guy! If only I had Chad Pennington I would have had like 500 TDs last season
Wheeeeeeeeee!
Gotcha! Oh oops I dropped you… it’s all that Brett Favre’s fault, Chad didn’t used to throw so hard
FARVE IS GOD;
How many pills did you pop in your mouth before you said that?
Hey WE WILL ALWAYS THANK YOU FARVE FOR SCUMBAG WAYS YOU BROUGHT TO THIS FRANCHISE AND FOR THE IGNORANT AND FOOLISH DISCIPLES THAT YOU HAVE!!
SORRY JAS (JOHNNY STYNE) I GUESS YOU WERE SECOND ON THE POLES FOR THIS BIGGEST FARVE WORSHIPPER AND LOSER!!!!
FARVE IS GOD:
YOU ARE THE BIGGEST IDIOT ON THIS BLOG AND YOU ARE FARVE’S NUMBER ONE BUTTKISSER!!!
FARVE IS GOD:
YOU CAN STICK ALL YOUR PRIDE OF FARVE UP YOUR BUTT!!!
Yes this is true, Brett Favre is not me. I enjoy watching him though
By the way, you might want to try not to piss me off. Last time Joe Namath disobayed all of my commandments on the same day, it cost you 40 years of incompetence
Fonz, it’s called sarcasm.
I am sorry did I just say that.
Forgive me I was thinking of something else.
Robert Mueller,
I am sorry who are you??
Just a guy. I’m saying Favre is God was maybe being sarcastic.
Well do you know he is serious after all he changed his name!!!
Ok; Favre should do us all a favor and retire.
Sorry Mr. Mueller,
You must step aside in this argument as this FARVE lover is truly MADLY IN LOVE WITH BRETT FAVRE!!!!
correction:
not truly (but madly I can tell)
I just decided I’m coming back. Debates over you can all go to sleep now.
Actually I think I’ll retire
BRETT FAVRE:
WELL HOW IS WIFE DOING??
I THINK SHE WANTS YOU HOME!!!
GO HOME!!!!!
correction:
How is your wife doing??
No I think I’ll come back
Let’s no go there fonz, even I have limits
I mean what limits:
You are the gunslinger right??
Come on throw another 22 interceptions and more rockets to the other team!!!
GREEN BAY DOESNT WANT YOU THE JETS TEAM DOESNT WANT YOU THE FANS DONT WANT YOU!!
I MEAN YOU ARE ALL ALONE RIGHT???
Well if 42 people are willing to vote they want me here on new years, imagine how many people want me that actually have a life. I’m Brett Frickin’ Favre man everyone wants me
not everyone
What? Who? Me? No, I’m above it all.
send the results like ya said
Wow didn’t know that all you so call JETS fans thnk this is a joke…Thanks for wasting time with your utter non sense….While you fans u know who u are a yacking it up us true Jets fans are talking some serious business about the future of the team….Once again THANK YOU for giving other teams fans base a chance to once again view the stupidity from the JETS fans who make the rest of us look like idiots too HAPPY NEW YEAR JOKESTERS go find another team….

This is complex, so I will create a new post to answer it.
jp losman:
“bent – do you see a possibility of lowering favre’s cap number through restructuring or is the team stuck with that number?”
They can try, but I think Favre would be reluctant to accept less money. However, if he really wants to come back they have some leverage (ie “OK, you can come back but only if you accept a reduction in salary).
hilarious:
“you call this bs raise your hand if you feel one way or another a poll?
What a joke.
This in no way whatsoever represent Jets fans. For all we know there could be one person voting 20 times under different names.”
First of all, I said all along it was only semi-scientific. Secondly, people’s actual opinions can be gauged by reading the comments (ie whether they were strongly against him coming back or just felt that, on balance, he shouldn’t) and finally, I can tell the IP address from which each reply came and did not count more than one vote from each location.
Bent the poll post was a great idea and the majority of serious fans appreciate the efforts u have put into your posts…as to the jokester with no clue JUST HIT THE IGGY BUTTON…..
BENT ,you think it is possible for Favre to except a lower base salary and adding more incentives and bonuses focusing on his actual game play..I think that would be a way to make BRETT a more effective quarter back with less hail mary type plays…and also would show he’s a team player so the organization can sign some free agents to help other areas of the team….
That’s entirely up to Brett. I wanted him to restructure last year and he didn’t so there you go…
If Favre returning will inhibit the hiring of a coach, then he must go.
I was just watching “The Herd” on ESPN2. He pulled a bunch of the players quotes supporting Manigini and ripping Farve. If he comes back we are in BIG trouble. He will split that locker roomm in half. If he even gets 50% of the players on his side. I hope we didn’t get rid of the wrong guy. Whatever happens, we can’t let him back in. If we do we’ll be paying for this for 2-3 years.
Ratliff is the Jet QB of the future. Ratliff, Ratliff,Ratliff. Clemens sucks. He can leave with Favre. People talk about Clemens behind the new O line, what about Ratliff behind the new O line? That kid has fire and leadership. Clemens does not have these qualities.
You beat me to it Jdogsofla, from the reporting and interviews given by the players its clear there is a dissention in the locker room. Some of the key players and actual leaders, unlike Favre, simply didn’t care for him. This will ruin this Jets team if he returns, its obvious now, Favre was the problem down the stretch it had a ripple effect through the locker room and on the field, cannot blame Mangini for that one.
I sort of wish that Mangini was not fired so quick, maybe the Jet players coming out and ripping Favre would have changed clueless Woody’s mind. The key players and FA they signed last year seemed to really like him, to bad they could not translate it to the field.
I’d rather see Ken O’Brien back than favrepickedoff.
go ratlif OR DRAFT A QB WITH YOUR 1ST PICK
First Kewpie of the New Year to Bent: ” think Newsday’s sample size was a bit small, that’s all.”
One thing I have noticed about our paid news media is that they have no conception research, work, or hard work. Bent, someone from the Jets Blog should ask what the sample size was when this data is shared with them.
You guys should be proud of yourselves for posing the question and getting some fairly reasonable input from Jet fans. 223 votes of folks who care enough to follow this blog is a bigger sample than any paper will seek out.
Bent, have you sent this to Newsday? Did you get a response?
If you do, please post it here.
As an aside, I would love for you and the other writers on this blog to similarly test other bogus statements of fact from our NY media in the future. I don’t agree with a lot of the posters here, but I respect their thinking a lot more than the stupidity I read in the NY papers.
harlan
Kenny O’brien- the “Dolphin Slayer”. God I miss him. At least when they played down here.
I think Brian Billick with Rex Ryan as the DC would work for me. They say what a great offensive mind Billick is but yet his offenses flopped in Baltimore. Look how he took Trent Dilfer and got him to make mistake free football that year. And the fact that he had Jamal Lewis running for over 1300 yards. We have TJ & Leon. Plug Brett Ratliff in there and go from there. If we can’t get Ryan get Romeo Crennel for the D.
Regardless, you need someone who has control over the players and coordinators when something isn’t working. Someone who can make game time decisions and corrections. If you’re going to use a 3-4 you need to send more than 3 people every play. Switch up your blitzes between the linbackers and the D backs. Throw some line stunts in there. I didn’t see any of that in the second half of the last 5 games. Except when we swarmed the Bills O line and they gave us the ball.
Hooray for Thomas Jones telling it like it is and criticizing Favre lousy playing. The NY Times has him telling Radio Hot 97 “the 3 interceptions really hurt us” and when you’re not playing well you should come out of the game” and “you’re jeopardizing the whole team’s efforts because you’re having a bad day. To me, that’s not fairto everybody else. I mean you’re not the only one on the team.”
Finally someone speaking out about what really happened.
Thank you Thomas
Harlan – Bassett send the link to Erik Boland. Tune into his blog to see if he mentions it.

Everyone bashing BF needs to remember that Chad was 19TD-16 INT (BF like) using the MANSHOTTY system in previous comeback year and last year Chad and KC had BF type numbers using the MANSHOTTY system.
I am not so sure any evaluation of ANY player is accurate until we find out what these coaching idiots were actually doing.
Chad’s numbers were really good this year with a real staff in place. I wonder what his numbers would have been in the MANSHOTTY system.
Hey JAS,
You are back!!!
Well you certainly want to put yourself in a hole.
Remember Chad last year played with torn ligaments in his ankle and not to mention his offensive line was pretty much trash.
Well you can give the fact that he posted similar stats to FARVE this year with touchdowns and interceptions but he never hurt the team like FARVE did. Especially when all the pieces were in place. I mean think of him playing with the offensive line of 2008. We lost last year based of lack of personel. This year FARVE destroyed us as an organziation. You choose which is worse. You can’t blame everything on the coaches they are trying not to lose their jobs its all a matter of if the players go out and execute. FARVE executed in destroying this team. THE DEADLY DISEASE HAS TAKEN PENNINGTON AND MANGINI WITH HIM!!!
HE MUST GO!!!!!
Fonz – with reference to what you said earlier, I’m pretty sure jas and Johnny Styne are different people. They post from different computers for a start.
Bent-
Please don’t encourage Wacko 2 (Fonz). He is due back at the asylum tomorrow.
Use my policy of not responding to complete idiots.
Besides, Wacko 1 and Wacko 2 (Fonzie/Hank) never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
Just remember, according to him/them we were going to have a great year when the season began. Clearly charter members of the Mangini Koolaid club.
If nothing else I was consistent from game one that the team just didn’t look right and frankly, it never got better. I think the historical stats on the MANSHOTTY offensive system are very telling.
Hey Bent, Gang Green, and everyone else, I want to apologize for taking part in some of the stupidity here last night, I was a little messed up and kinda got carried away (kids don’t drink and post).
Anyway, I would have voted yes on this, mostly because there was a time when I felt this team could make a superbowl run with Brett, and I don’t think we’re going anywhere with Clemens or Ratliff, so the way I see it we’ve got nothing to lose by giving him another shot. But if most Jets fans don’t want him back, fine, I just hope we can find someone else to do the job then, because otherwise we’ll be taking heat for letting Brett go just like we did for Chad (who by the way also had stunk it up the year before and was injured and we all thought he was done…)
Not saying it’s the same thing, just maybe we should be more careful and consider our options
Jas:
I really like you, and the team is really in good shape … ater you got all your wishes.
