Rex Ryan to Interview With Jets
Jane McManus notes on her blog on lohud.com that the Jets have another candidate on their list.
The Jets asked for and got permission to talk to Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, although no meeting has been scheduled since his team is still in the playoffs. Ryan, 46, was with the Ravens for their 2000 Super Bowl victory, and is in his ninth year with the team. He is in the first of a two-year deal with the Ravens.
So, candidates we know about for sure that the Jets are planning to meet with two in-house candidates, Brian Schottenheimer and Bill Callahan. External candidates that they have gotten permission to speak to are Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo and Ravens DC Rex Ryan.
Why has Titans DC Jim Schwartz’s name not been announced by the Jets?

Smashmouth kill the QB football. no Cowher, ok, Rex Ryan is my guy. Bring Ray Lewis with ya
Do the Ravens run a 3-4? If they do I know they haven’t always.
i thought it was reported schottenheimer was canned also?
if mangini was canned and schottenheimer wasnt, then mangini’s firing makes no sense at all…
did i miss something?
JAGG,
The Ravens run a 4-3. They tried the 3-4 a few years ago and had a Ray Lewis lead revolt, and switched back to the 4-3.
Pretty sure Rex Ryan will be busy till at least a week from Sunday.
id only want him if he wants to run a 3-4 otherwise id want spags
chrebook … the jets haven’t announced firings of their coordinators, and BSchotty is on the head coach candidate list
(I believe it’s just a bone to throw at him)
Rex is a good fit, makes your 3-4 an aggressive defense, will not ask for big money and more importantly to Tanny he won’t ask for a lot of control. The Jets seem to be committed to both Callahan and Schott on the offensive side. Rex is not sexy and will not sell PSL’s but if you cut Farve and get 12 million to spend in free agency, Rex could pick up a couple of free agents to tweak the defense.IMHO a top 5 defense with:
Ratliff = Flacco
Caulcrick = McClain
ramble im pretty sure they run a 3-4 but its more of a mixture because of lewis
JAGG / ramble,
The Ravens base defense is a 3-4, not a 4-3. They use Suggs and J Johnson as OLB’s. They switch to a 4-3 pretty frequently, though, with either Suggs or M Douglas at DE.
I love Ryan as a coordinator, but I have to wonder how he hasn’t gotten an HC job yet. He was the frontrunner for the Falcons job last year, and interviewed with the Ravens and Dolphins too. So is there something about him that scared off those teams?
Actually, they are a 3-4 team still and Rex is very much a 3-4 proponent.
Chreb…Newsday redacted that report as it has been left up to whoever the new coach is to decide on his staff, so nobody has been released yet. I have no problem with this decision. Some heat has been deflected from the coordinators by comments that have said that Mangini interfered a lot in the gameplanning and was a bit of a control freak, but I don’t know how accurate these comments are.
Jetorange, equating Ratliff with Flacco and Caulcrick with McClain is jumping the gun a bit, don’t you think? Ratliff had a nice preseason last year and Caulcrick “looks” like he could develop into a solid FB. If those 2 turned out to be as goos as their Balt counterparts it would obviously be great for the Jets, but they have a long way to go before we even discuss it.
Ryan may be a good option for HC. At least he looks tough.
thus would be a great signing b/c they switch between 3-4 and 4-3 so we dont need an overhaul and we can actually see if VG is wat we think he is in a 4-3 DE and hopefully rex would axe sutton and shotty
Someone mentioned this in an earlier post, but Rex as HC with Rob as DC might actually give us a worthwhile defense for the first time since 86.
Why would we interview Rex Ryan and Not Billick who was his coach on that Superbowl winning team? Billick is a proven Super Bowl winning Coach. And he won that Super Bow;l with Trent Dilfer as his QB.
If THAT doesn’t say anything about being a leader I don’t know what does.
STL, who’s rob
pk, rex’s brother
REX RYAN is a great defensive coach but what does he know about offense and game planning if he goes to head coach…The Ravens haven’t had anything resembling an offense until this year…lol and really Ray LEWIS plays assistent coach on the field for that defense….so that may be why he is still defensive coordinator
o thanks, who does he coach for
oakland
Bent, you wrote about “comments that have said that Mangini interfered a lot in the gameplanning and was a bit of a control freak” – I haven’t heard that before. Who said that?
Give him all the $$$$ he wants. the jets need a tough coach like this. imagine Jenkins, Harris, and Rhodes under this guy.
Expert:
I didn’t hear it directly, but here’s what a commenter called Sean said in another post:
“news reports said that Mangini was more involved in the play calling on both sides of the ball than coordinator’s generally prefer. In fact, one report said that someone within the Jets said that he was a control freak. Probably why they are considering keeping Schott.”
He is not the only person I have heard relay these reports, but as I said, I did not hear them myself and it may just be propaganda so Woody can justify keeping on a yes man for all I know.
Yup… Rex Ryan is my guy, too.
I like the bloodlines. And the Jets ties… he’s part of the Jets family. Maybe even remembers the Supe.
And he’d bring to the team, one of its basic needs, an aggressive attitude.
Count me in…
puts some umph into our defence…… maybe actually put some pressure on the god damn QB…… i like him
It was Adam Shein on SNY-Qoute-I’ve heard from many sources that Mangini decided on the plays and that Shotty was handcuffed….and that Shotty is very well thought of around the league…. and the Ravens were going to offer him the HC job last year.
Please somebody try to find out.
I really don’t believe it, but if Shotty is around I’m honestly done. I really mean it. Enough is enough. The guy is horrible.
This is exactly what the Jets need, I say go get him.
so instead of firing shotty, they’ll consider hiring him as head coach.
hard to understand a lot of this organization
I am not sure if we will a championship with this guy but I know opposing QB’s with crap their pants when they line up against his defense. It worked for his dad and it has worked for him so far……Having R Lewis, Ed Reed, T Suggs and company sure help though. I would ratther him run my defense than my team but he is a legit candidate.
im wary of picking up a coordinator.
But I think he’d be good for personnel.
The Ravens did switch to a 4-3 fairly recently. I remember Lewis struggling for a season. But they made it work. There’s a few Suggs-like players on the Jets – especially Gholston.
lgs…I believe Ryan plays a 3-4. R Lewis bitched about the 3-4 in the early 2000’s after Adams and Goose left the team and they switched back to a 4-3 but went back to a 3-4 since Ryan has been there and the defense has been sick.
If Gholsten becomes half the player that Suggs is I will be thrilled.
This is the problem—————-
Even the JETS wouldn’t hire Shotty as HC………………………………………………..
OMG, what if it’s true?
If Gholsten becomes a player…I’ll be SHOCKED!
Let me bend your mind with Steve Mariucci for HC.
Before you laugh, Favre likes him, he’s a QB guy and his record is pretty good. He took over a good/ready to win 49er’s team and took them to the playoffs and then rebuilt them from the abyss and took them back again and his record was pretty good in Detroit. (by Detroit standards anyway).
Bring in a good DC with him and things could be good.
The JETS would be very lucky to get a quality coach like Rex. Unfortunately, the JETS fans are still stuck with a lousy GM and ownership. Good luck. Stay with the Ravens Rex its your best chance to get another ring.
Thanks Drew. I meant to say the switched to a 3-4, not a 4-3. You’re absolutely right. Lewis struggled the first year but they made it work the next year.
BTW, this team very much needs a Ray Lewis. I though Vilma might take that role eventually.
Aot of the Ravens success this year could be credited to Ryan as he was not only the DC but the assistant head coach as well, making the transition for Harbaugh nice and easy. Hiring Ryan makes the most sense now that Cowher is out of the picture, he has been a coordinator for 4 years and been in the league for awhile and runs the 3-4. He will make the Jets defense actually scare the opposition. The key with hiring a guy like Ryan is getting a great OC, fire Schotty and make Callahan the OC.
Enough of this unproven Coordinator crap!!! I know it sounds ridiculous, but I’m still holding out hope for Cowher!!! If he says he’s not interested, MAKE HIM INTERESTED!!! In this world $$$$ talks, and Bull@!?* walks!!! Personally, I don’t care if it takes $10 Million per year, GET THE MAN!!! Hey Woody, if you truly want too sell those P.S.L’s……get on your jet, go too Cowher’s home, get on your knees, beg, grobble, and write an open check in “THE CHIN”s name I don’t care what it takes, GET THE MAN!!!
Now, I’m not an unreasonable man! I know that I’m being extremely stubborn, but I think Cowher is exactly what this team, ” so desparately”, needs!!! A hard nosed, emotional, Head Coach, that knows what it takes too win!!! He ran the 3-4 in Pitt., and ran it better than anyone, he’s a run 1st, pass 2nd guy , which is exactally what this team “should” be, He commands respect, from everyone, including the media, Players truly play for him, just ask Jerome Bettis, but most of all, HE’S A BORN WINNER!!!
But if Cowher is truly unobtainable, than Shanny would be my #2, followed by ,(and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but), Schotty’s papa, Martyball!!! I just don’t want some unexperianced, over ambitious, Coordinator too take over this team!!! The truth is people, as dissappointing as this season was, WE’RE VERY CLOSE!!! That’s why I want someone that will recognize that, and take this team too that next level, and it should be someone that has been there, and done, just that!!! Happy New Year everyone, and who knows, with the rite Head Coach, maybe A very Happy New Year!!!
we have a bad owner and gm?
the owner will spend as much as he can to bring in free agents to win..and the gm has had good drafts since he’s been in charge..
AND they listened to US when we said boot mangini….let’s see how they handle this mess before we dis woody and tannenbaum
Why are they asking to interview only defensive coaches from outside the organization? This bothers me greatly. Time to change what hasn’t worked in the oast which was a defensive minded coach. Can we please bring someone in with an offensive background?
As has been said already, the Ravens run both a 3-4 and 4-3. They ran the 3-4 without a big tackle to clog the middle for the year that Ray complained which is the reason we drafted Ngata. I don’t know what you are looking for in a coach and I don’t know what kind of HC Rex would be (the players love him, fwiw) but he really is a wizard of a defensive coach. Watch the playoff game Sunday and look at some of the things the Ravens will do. Rex’s forte is blitzing and the Ravens rarely send more than 5 and usually they only come with 4 but they are still effective because of pre-snap motion and they always come from a different angle. Granted the Ravens D has great players but you will be thrilled with Rex’s creativity. He will maximize each player’s potential by putting them in a position based on their abilities. That’s what you always hear from Ravens players : “Rex just knows how to use everyone correctly.” “Rex puts each player on defense in a position to succeed.” and stuff like that. I have no clue what he would bring in offensively but I’m guessing he would want to bring a physical run game like we have in Baltimore. So if you want a great defensive mind that the players respect Rex could be your guy.
I thought I read the 3-4 doesn’t suit Jenkins.
If we can’t get Cowher, then Rex Ryan is the guy. I love the Jets connection and his 3-4 hybrid is very inventive, with great blitz packages as Ravens fan said. And, I hope he has a defensive coach’s view of the offense…run the ball until the other team stops it and sprinkle in play action passes and TE passes. Look at the offenses that BB and Parcells ran. I think Schotty can run a good base offense, I just don’t like the lack of commitment to the run and the gadget plays. Strip those out, let the OL control the LOS and then pass to catch the defense off guard. Bringing in a tackle eligible or letting Favre go in a spread on 1st down isn’t inventive, it’s predictable.
Go get him. This would be my number 1 choice after Cowher. He is a great defensive coordinator and he could bring in one of his own guys and have a big hand in the defense.
Ray Lewis??? are you retarted. if anything bring ed reed he’s a billion times better. Lewis is old and about to fade away. ill admit he’s still sweet but his times about up.
But I’m looking to get Rex Ryan. But i still think the best thing they can do is pick mangini back up. he was an awesome coach i dont care what anyone says.
