Buzz: Real Leaders Are Starting to Emerge
Somewhere, Eric Mangini must be having a good laugh. Check out these bombshell comments from Erik Boland and Arthur Staple from Newsday from an anonymous player on national media darling Brett Favre:
“There was a lot of resentment in the room about him,” a Jets player told Newsday yesterday. He requested anonymity because team owner Woody Johnson has stated publicly that Favre is welcome to return next season if he wants to. (Favre reportedly will take until the end of February to decide about returning.)
The 39-year-old quarterback is not as welcome with his teammates, according to this veteran. After the Jets traded for Favre Aug. 6, the sure Hall of Famer made no effort to ingratiate himself with the already assembled team, the veteran said. He said Favre spent most of his down time at the practice facility in an office specially designated for him near the equipment room, not with teammates in the locker room, even after the media departed.
“He never socialized with us, never went to dinner with anyone,” the player said. Asked to describe Favre in a word, he said: “Distant.”
Now that the season is over and the Jets Head Coach is gone, players are feeling a little more emboldened about speaking out about Brett Favre and his place with this team. While most retreated a little this past season and allowed the future Hall of Fame QB to rule the roost, some of the players are starting to do exactly what this team needs … assert their own leadership at the expense of Brett Favre.
From any other players perspective, now that they’ve seen Favre up close for a season, if he’s is making very little or no effort to blend in, if he’s is going to be aloof, if he’s going to make the same mistakes again and again and not be a team player or be accountable for it … then why would any reasonable person continue to protect him?
After a report earlier in the week that Favre was miffed about getting called on the carpet for mistakes, the anonymous player went on to say that
“If [Favre] was hurt by that stuff, I’d be shocked, because Eric barely said anything to him,” the player said. “Guys would be getting called out for missed assignments or blown coverages, and Brett would have three picks and no one would say a word.”
Mangini addressed the team for the last time Monday. The player said the former coach revealed a much different side than he showed before, telling players he’d been tough and aloof only to get the most out of them.
According to the player – and he was backed by very supportive comments about Mangini from other Jets – very few in the room thought Mangini deserved to be fired, and that the acquisition of Favre and his subsequent “me-first” attitude hurt the Jets more than anything.
“Eric,” he said, “wasn’t the reason we didn’t make the playoffs.”
Not a shocking development that the league leading twenty two interceptions that Favre threw were the pink elephant in the room that no one would talk about, God forbid anyone upset Bretty! These anonymous quotes are just the latest in a recent string of them. Tuesday it was Thomas Jones on HOT97 saying how teammates are “pissed,” and on Baggie Day it was Kerry Rhodes telling his co-captain to tow the line in terms of offseason work.
“If he’s dedicated and he wants to come back and do this, and do it the right way … and be here when we’re here in training camp and the minicamps and working out with us … then I’m fine with it. But don’t come back if it’s going to be halfhearted or he doesn’t want to put the time in with us.”
If Favre wants to work out all offseason with the guys, if Favre wants to put in the time for minicamps and OTAs, then that’s another story. Normally egomaniac players (see Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, etc.) who get a fresh start in a new town act as “good citizens” for at least a year, but that’s clearly not the case with Bretty. Getting traded to the Jets hasn’t been a wake up call to the guy, and now his teammates are ringing the alarm bells for him.
Read that quote again. That’s incredibly damning … when should a team captain ever have to approach another captain about putting the work in, let alone make a plea to the press to get his point across? That’s all you need to know about life on Planet Brett.

nay
wow
Sheesh … I really wish there was more hope in my mind for Clemens and-or Ratty … I would like to otherwise see the JETS move towards getting a different QB for next year (and the future). But while this stuff is bad, I think he’s the best option.
I supported getting Favre but being a pessimistic JETS fan, I was expecting the worst and it happened. However, unlike many of our comrades here on TJB, I don’t think Chad wouldve had a better record with the JETS year. Good for Chad.
Oh and I will add that ‘nay’ is becoming more and more attractive in light of recent media disclosures!
The fact that I think he’s the best option is from an ability standpoint, so I don’t want him back unless he totally changes his attitude and works with the team.
i was one who said YAY yesterday for Favre coming back.
However, now i dont want him back.
This offseason, the jets should try and acquire d.anderson or b.quinn from the browns and let that person fight for the QB position with clemons and ratliff.
RB – Jones and washington
Fb- must bring back t rich
WR – Must trade coles
maybe a coles for chad johnson trade (both teams want to get rid of their player)
TE- Keller, lets baker go and get a blocking TE
OL – Bring everyone back but get a quality veteran tackle/guard for the bench.
Defense: I would clean house on the defense and only have jenkins, harris, pace, revis, rhodes and lowrey back.
thomas, ellis, law, barton, etc. can all go.
P- Must find a new punter
K- resign nugent. he prob. wont want to come back bec. of what we did to him, so mught have to find a new kicker.
as for the coaching staff, if we’re going to sign veteran players, then marty schotenheimer is the guy. If however we r going for youth, then spagnolo is the go.
While a lot of blame can be placed on Favre down the stretch, Mangini stilled coached like he was scared and clueless during the latter part of the season.
It was a matter of time, until someone spoke out against Favre.
I don’t think any is surprised?
I wonder if this will affect, Favre coming back?
@DSmizzle
You think favre is the best option cause you don’t think our other QBs aren’t the answer?
That would be a stupid reason to put a QB in with no heart, and who everyone else on the team seems to dislike.
i m not putting anything into to this until i know who said it. alot of times newspaper guys find these stories and the story line isn t even worth the paper its written on.
most likely in these situations its the guy doing the talking is the guy that needs to leave. i.e kevin mawea – pete kendal – and this case its prob L coles.
i guess if T jones is saying it, then it has some credibility, but he didn t say this and i highly doubt TJ’s comments were taken in the right context.
newsflash – these so called beat writers use these types of ploys to sell their product, why do you think they disliked Mangini so much? becasue he gave them nothing.
not buying a story from a guy with no name
What I do not understnad is the NY Media’s pretended surpise, and the genuine surprise of some of the fans in this blog.
Favre’s childish, selfish and Diva approach to the game was a VERY WELL ESTABLISHED FACT, prior to his acquisition by the JETS.What were you, Jets fans, thinking about? His HOF consecutive playing streak?
ronnie –
why cut baker if you need a blocking TE. according to bent he only cost 2.2 mil against the cap. that seems pretty fair.
JPLosman…were have you been the last 10 years? Hidden In a cave? Far from the civilization?
What are you talking about?
For Mangini’s sake , I hope that the Cleveland organization, is reading all this stuff….
I heard Chris Baker on Sirius and he had a different story. He spoke about how injured Brett was and how tough he was to practice and play in the games. He agreed that the INTs have to be cut down, but he said that he wanted to play with a healthy Favre with a full off-season regime and training camp (which he thought would cut down on the INTs).
Favre came in late, with big hype and a big contract. He wasn’t prepared and I’m sure a lot of players resented his just parachuting in and being anointed the savior. But, every interception has a thousand stories and often times the receiver is just as culpable. The players know this and I have to think that the Favre-bashing is about something more than just the INTs. I’m guessing that it’s a message to Favre (and Woody/Tanny) that just parachuting in and expecting to lead the team won’t cut it for season 2. I’m all for that, but I still think it’s simplistic to blame Favre for losing 4 out of 5, just as it was simplistic to laud him for an 8-3 record with 5 straight wins and wins on the home fields of each AFC East rival. Favre did some great things with the Jets before the season ended badly. If his season-ending performance was caused by injury, doesn’t he deserve a break? I gave Chad the same break after last season and thought he was the clear choice over KC. It was obvious that he was injured in ‘07. I bet the same fans that wanted to throw Chad under the bus, now want to do the same with Favre, while pining away for Chad. I’m with Chris Baker (and I can’t believe I’m agreeing with a guy that I wanted cut), a healthy Favre that puts in the time is the Jets’ best QB option, especially for a “win-now” team.
I wonder if we be hearing all this crticism if we had made it to the playoffs. We all knew for the past 18 years, Brett was a gunner who took chances. A QB who would make an occasional bone headed play but a QB you would go into battle with and will be there for every snap. It is unrealistic to expect Brett to be sit down, for 2 unproven QBs. This is just alot of sour grapes because we didn’t make the playoffs. Brett is not the reason we missed the playoffs even though he did not help much in the last month. apparently because of an injury. Madden JINX lives. The defense allowed every QB to look Peyton Manning the last month. No adjustments were made to the spread offense teams were deploying against us. That was all coaching IMO. If I had a choice, I would have picked Favre over Mangini too. I hope Favre comes back healthy and shows he can be the one to lead us to a Superbowl.
Like I said all along….Mangini was handicapped by this clown and never lost the locker room. You could see Mangini’s face everytime the “legend” made a careless mistake instead of taking a sack or throwing the ball away. Mangini had his warts but he was a 3rd year coach that was told to handle a aging HOF QB that never met a pic he didnt like…..which totally contridicted what hid “core” team values were. I was happy Favre was here but wanted this as a 1 year experiment. It didnt work and the coach is gone and the locker room has issues. Only the Jets!!
Let Favre go.
The best thing is for the players to start talking now. Hopefully Brett, Woody and Mike T will be aware of the players feelings and Brett will retire.
While they are at it the players should start telling us why the defense collapsed and the pass rush diappeared. Was it the play calling or the players?
How about Westoff as HC. He seems to be the only coach with any fire and a willingness to throw a chair or hit someone with his cane (no disrespect meant).
once I heard Favre had a private office at the practice facility and he never hanged with the fellas!
He’s a goner ! No time for a player like that on our team. No one person is better than the team. That’s it ! Get him the hell away from our team. I rather suffer growing pains with one own QB’s.
Brett is so over rated ! 20 freaking INTs. Please retire !! Woody should sale the team if he decides to bring him back.
Just to add. I keep reading that Bret is a gunslinger and you take the good with the bad. Favre had 3 good games of the 9 wins we produced. The magical NE was the only special game he had. When you throw 9 INTS and 2 TDS in the final 5 games. That is not taking the good with the bad. That is just bad. We needed Favre to just be okay to win 2 of 5 those games. He was awful in all 5. That dosent take away Mangini’s or the defense’s issues but Favre was supposed to make a difference not compile the problem.
I said “YAY” for Favre to come back, now I am undecided. For a time the 68 Jets team were fed up up with Namath and went to the coaching staff with complaints about their quarterback. Namath didn’t act like a leader until he was made captain and felt the weight of responsibility. Favre, like Namath did, has a tendency to try to win the game himself, rather than protect the ball and rely on the defense to do their job. Not knowing about the locker room issues, I thought Favre could come back in 09 with the right coach and a deep threat receiver and have a good year. However, apparently Favre should have been put in his place in 08 by his teammates and the coaching staff. I don’t know that Favre can have the turn around like Namath, that would unite the locker room and take the Jets to the super bowl. So, Favre’s retirement may be better for the unity of the Jets.
Chris Baker whined like a girl because he didn’t get the contract he wanted and then posted really mediocre numbers as a reward for the aforementioned new contract. Now he’s a good soldier/leader.
Chris Baker got owned by Dustin Keller now go get your shine box!
“Favre’s childish, selfish and Diva approach to the game”
Worked wonders for Tiki and Shockey across the umm parking lot.
Favre is German for PSL salesman.
F Brett Favre. He was a blight to that locker room, and even if he plays next year as if it’s 1999 all over again, it shouldn’t matter; leadership and chemistry count far more than some may realize, particularly in Football.
Look at Chad — clearly not the best option out there, perhaps not as talented or “rocket armed”, but do note what leadership and character can do to a team that won ONE game last year. Now, of course, Chad was not the only reason — the fact that their Coaching Staff tailored offensive gameplans and schemes that catered to Chad’s strengths and minimized his weaknesses played a large part in his success, and also speaks to the failures of the Jets coaching staff — B. Schott and even Mangini — for their lack of ability to utilize the talent they have and generate schemes that best utilize the upsides of our Offensive players…
Regardless, it’s clear the self-serving nature of FAVRE should have NO place in next year’s JETS team…
Let’s see Clemens and Ratliff fight it out with a much-improved O-Line [remember, Clemens started those games 2 years ago with a horrid o-line], and I will guarantee this team will at the very least play with more passion, fire, and most importantly, as ONE UNIT — a TEAM, not as “FAVRE’s TEAM”.
NAY NAY NAY NAY to FAVRE FAVRE FAVRE. Shall I be more blunt?
It’s funny how Favre started complaining about his “injured” shoulder only when he started to completely stink it up, he never once accepted responsibilty for his poor decision making. Anyone that says, oh if he is healthy and has a good camp he will be fine, just needs time to mesh, your kidding yourself, that is not going to change the fact that his decision making skills are atrocious and trying to force the football in when he should just simply throw it away. Again no excuse for 22 INT’s.
All the Jets need is a game manager at QB who can throw the deep ball and I believe Ratliff and/or Clemens has the ability to do that. Plus the fact alone that he is going to count $13MILLION against the cap is absurd. The Jets have other needs where they can use that money. Stay home Brett, the Jets will be better off with out ya!
I don’t give whoever this veteran was any credit. You got something to say, be a man, put your name on it. Don’t hide behind a Newsday reporter. TJ came right out and said what he needed about Favre. And as Gary Meyers put it, Mangini made Herm look like Vince Lombardi in that Seattle game.
Please do not compare Herm to Mangini, Herm has no idea how to coach a team, inspire yes, coach no, and since when does Gary Myers have any credibility as a reporter, imagine if the Jets listened to him and drafted Matt Leinart.
been saying this for weeks. just wondering how those favre supporters r feeling. its a joke what favre did to mang an the whole franchise
LOL dude how many times have we heard comments like that from an “anonymous player” and it’s the same player every time, COLES. Who else would make a comment like that except a guy who divides the locker room himself
We never find out who the player is…I’d be willing to bet it’s nobody more often than not.
Coles blabs enough without being anonymous, why would he suddenly get bashful?
nikolas –
just becasue you want to buy into the crap some practice squad player is selling doesnt mean i was locked in cave for 10 years. i choose to hear both sides of a story before i make a judgement.
if this were the case then this so called “teammate” would have put his name on it. until that guy has a name, this story is nothing more than a version of days of out lives.
this is great. favre comes here as the savior in august and for the next couple of days, nickel-ass wants to make him into barry bonds.
Steve
Coles would have not hide his identity, it was someone, who made no noise in the locker at all, someone that needed Favre like a WR, maybe Cotch, or an OL, probably Mangold who has Favre’s hand touching his ass every play except Shotgun plays
This is true, but he’s done it before. I seem to remember an “anonymous player” saying before the season that the Jets didn’t do right by Chad Pennington
I could be wrong here because it was almost year ago but I believe he had an anonymous comment about the Chris Baker situation as well
“The magical NE was the only special game he had. ”
And even in that one, he entered overtime with just 202 passing yards. If the Pats got the ball first and went down and scored, it would be remembered as one of his poorer games.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2008/03/05/2008-03-05_anonymous_jet_veterans_upset_about_teams-2.html
If the Tampa Bay Bucaneers
can be referred to as the Bucs
Then why can’t the Tennessee Titans
be referred to as the Tits ?
i think the tits can catch on and might become the new americas team
For some reason I’m envisioning Marc Bulger from St. Louis on our team…perhaps I’m still drunk?
So let me put it this way, do you guys really think the “anonymous player” here and the “anonymous player” in the link I posted are two different players? I guess I can’t say for sure but it seems like quite a coincidence that Coles had a publicly stated opinion that matches in both situations
I am neither for or against the Jets or Brett. I am actually a Packer Fan/Owner. Brett did not return to Football for the money he has all the money that he will ever need. Brett came back because that’s all he knows, it’s in his blood. It’s tough to recognize when your skills have diminshed and by how much they have diminished. I predicted what would happen before the season started and my prediciton couldn’t have been more accurate. If Brett returns next year we’ll all discover that he will be less capable than he was this year. The injuries will linger for a longer period of time, strength will be less, speed will decrease, etc. etc. I wish he had left when he claimed to be returning and have gone out on top with everyone wanting more. I couldn’t be happier for Chad Pennington. The Jets management is getting exactly what they deserve, unfortunately the fans are paying the price. Owners figure that you will always be fans and always support the team no matter what they do or how they do it. One thing I wish they would do is update the Jets uniforms and team colors. These choices might have been good 40 or 50 years ago but they certainly aren’t befitting of Today’s image of NYC.
Hire a design, have a contest, do something. With a new look will come a new attitude or should it be the other way around.

TJ’s comments were taken out of context? What the hell are you talking about? YOU CAN WATCH THE INTERVIEW AND SEE EVERYTHING HE SAID. Therefore people can draw their own conclusions. Therefore there’s no way the comments could have been taken out of context.
Favre also led the Jets to 2 50 point games. We don’t know when Favre got injured. Again, why no break for being injured? Also, if someone doesn’t like my posts, be a man and don’t just copy my name.
Baker was hardly ever thrown to. The only memories I have of his ‘08 season is the game losing drop in Oakland and an impressive 3rd down reception vs. St. Louis.
But at least Baker was there! Bubba Franks only played half the ******* season.
Well I think the Jets knew something about Franks when they signed Baker to an extension and then traded up to draft Dustin Keller
Kewpie to JP.
I am sick and tired of cowardice amongst millionaires. TJ was willing to go on the record with what he said and he depends on the QB to give him the ball.
The reporters reporting this are the same quality of reporter as the guys who write Jet fans want Favre back without doing their due diligence. One guy sounding off after a disappointing season. Big deal. Only in NY does it get such big play.
It is not like our Defense played so great down the stretch.
I want to see:
Who Woody and Tanny hire for our new coach.
What that guy decides to do about Coordinators.
Who they draft.
What that guy does about Favre.
What they do about Ratliff, Leon, Clowney, et. al.
IMHO, in that order, will depend our next season. Not on one cowardly back stabber.
harlan
What that guys
Bent
When I say “special” I mean he made high pressure throws in a high pressure game that someone like Chad couldnt have made. Plus every Jet fan thought that game was over on 3rd and 15 Fvare led them to the winning score. His yrds meant alot less than the fact that he made zero mistakes against a team that constantly caused our QB’s to make.
I agree with sack- Favre’s injury should factor into his performance in the same way that Chad’s injury should be factored into how he played down the stretch in 2004 (though Favre was completely unable to duplicate Chad’s game against San Diego). It should be noted, however, that even when the Jets were 8-3 and Favre was getting his Pro Bowl votes, FO’s numbers suggested he was one of the bottom-third quarterbacks in the league. (As was Matt Cassel, everyone’s new darling.) He simply wasn’t very good all season long.
With all that said, I’m not as quick to throw Favre under the bus as everyone else. The circumstances of his arrival made this season’s performance entirely predictable for anyone who wasn’t looking at it through rose-colored glasses. Favre still has a very strong arm and can make all the short and intermediate throws you’d ask him to. If he has a full offseason and training camp to work in the offense, he’ll undoubtedly be better next year.
That doesn’t mean that everything will be solved by a better performance in 2009. The question remains- how much better will Favre be, and what will be the cost of playing him? Does playing Favre for one more season seriously hinder the team’s ability to put a long-term answer in place at the quarterback position? That’s really the issue. I don’t doubt that Favre will be better, but I’m concerned about what that means. Clearly, any prospective head coaching candidates will be concerned as well.
I like what I’ve seen out of Ratliff. I would be willing to see Clemens in a different offense (he might look good running Shanahan’s offense). And, swizzle’s comment aside, I’d be interested in seeing if Arizona would trade Matt Leinart for reasonable terms and would put him into the mix. It’s a terrible quarterback draft this year, and it seems foolhardy to just cross our fingers and hope Favre will play for two years.
Steve, the link you provided pretty much says that there is an anonymous quote but then goes on to add that Coles has been outspoken in making similar comments. By implication, this would suggest that the anonymous comments are never him. I agree Coles moans a lot and I agree that anonymous comments are cowardly (if there even are such comments…) but it seems clear to me that Coles is not the anonymous guy.
I know exactly when Favre got injured Sack – it was during or before the Raiders game. He was a different QB from that point on. It’s true, he should get the same “yeah, he sucked but he was hurt” free pass that Chad got, but even if he does, that doesn’t change (a) his age or (b) his cap number.
Wonder what odds I could get on him for comeback player of the year next year?
Joe B – It’s clear TJ didn’t want to make those comments, but was coerced into it, but that speaks more volumes that any anonymous quote. The fact that he said it even though you could tell there was an aspect of “I probably shouldn’t be saying this” makes the comments all the more damning.
see fellas brett could have been the best thing to happen to us…. cuz now we have a pissed off group that are finally deciding to be leaders….
wow man the jets are turning into a soap oprah.i hate anoynomus players man
Bent,
Good point on TJ,Sounded the same way to me.I know on ESPN. Schlereth has kinda explained something’s about what TJ has said and on the other issue’s discussed on this blog……………..
Drew – totally. And he was clutch in the end against the Chiefs too. I didn’t want to downplay those moments, which were great and I will remember them when I look back on the Favre era, whether it be over or not.
Seanmac31 – The only thing you don’t mention in your post (which I liked) is the financial side of things. Shouldn’t that factor somehow into the FO metrics (I know they talk about “value”) As we discussed previously I am all for trading for a young QB like Leinart because the financial risk is negligible, as opposed to drafting one – and if there’s one thing we all agreed on in our numerous debates about the draftability of QBs last offseason, it’s that the draft can be a crapshoot.
Sack – I don’t think the guy who “copied your name” was commenting on the standard of your posts. “Sackdance92 22.5>22″ clearly says “Strahan is better than Gastineau” in response to your own name. You ought to be flattered at the imitation!
You know what maybe we should trade our 2nd Rd pick ot go up in the 1st round to get Mark Sanchez, he is pretty good, the again, What do I know? I too supported the Favre trade, and now feel like an idiot but, I guess Woody is probably the least saddest guy on the team, because of all the seats he sold.
This is just what the jets need? Lol. This blog is getting ridiculous.
How is it it good for the team to have teammates releasing anonymous quotes about Brett Favre? I’m sure you guys were equally supportive of the “he’s like and egg back there” in regards to Chaddy-Boy
How is ok that “Hollywood” Kerry Rhodes, who himself played like crap this season is calling out anybody?
And Jones calling out Favre for last Sunday? Is this the same guy that averaged 2 yards per carry in that game and didn’t do a damn thing himself???
As a Jets fans I can’t think of anything worse then having average players calling out the QB in the media, particularly when the QB was playing hurt..
Bent, I agree that there are other ways of looking at it. My impression was that by posting Coles’ photo and discussing his contract situation, the author was trying to tell us something, but perhaps I’m reading too much into it. In any case, I believe whoever made comments like that is in no position to criticize other players for not being a part of the team
seanmac, agree about seeing Clemens in Shanny’s offense. That guy and Leon Washington could take off in that system..
At the same time though, I fear our potential on defense would be squandered. Not like Mangini got any of that potential out anyway though..
I happen to agree with TJ though, the way Favre played at the end of the season he probably should have been benched, and if that happens again next season I would hope they do so. However, that’s quite different than saying the guy doesn’t think of himself as part of the team
Yes, I’m taking the finances into consideration. I have zero interest in throwing money at Matt Cassel, which in any event is impossible considering Favre’s cap number (and the mounting evidence that New England will franchise him). Ratliff doesn’t cost anything, and Leinart has no leverage and would likely negotiate a short-term deal that would allow him to opt out of it if he hit certain performance triggers. Alternately, the team could re-sign Clemens, but indications are that they don’t think much of him and that Ratliff has surpassed him.
Another possibility is Byron Leftwich, who played very well in limited action, and who figures to have little interest in hanging around Pittsburgh as a backup. Those are all good options for reasonable money.
Steve, if I made comments on the condition of anonymity and then the reporter left a bunch of clues as to my identity, I think that would be the last “anonymous” quote I ever made!
I still think the “egg” comment was made up. It stirred up a whole hornets nest about “the Jets have no faith in Chad” but then we heard other off-the-record quotes from key offensive players saying “Chad’s the guy” and really got a sense that they were behind him (and if anything, revelations this offseason have backed that up).
As you all know, I can be a very sarcastic person. I dread to think what sort of quotes would be attitributed to me if I was an NFL player.
nyckage
Sanchez is not even rated as a 1st rounder. The kid from Georgia and then the Oklahoma QB are the only 1st round QB’s. Sanchez is a 3rd round pick at best. He a decent QB not agreat one. I know that USC will have about 4 defensive players go in the first round though. That LB are scary
Why am I not surprised that you think the “egg back there” comments were fabricated, while these ones are 100% accurate. Can we be more biased?
It’s not like Cotch in particular didn’t have a lot of great things to say about Favre during the season..
Umm, jets, TJ average? He only had the most rushing TD’s in Jets history and led the AFC in rushing. CBS showed a couple of clips of TJ during the Fins game and he was steaming on the sideline you could see it in his face. If Schotty had only stuck with his workhorse more this year we would not be debating this topic right now.
Point taken. You’re right, Bent, I’m probably reading too much into this. The problem then is that means we have at least two selfish and cowardly players making anonymous comments, which I imagine would contribute to the lack of chemistry that everyone has been putting on Favre and Mangini.
I actually already said these could easily be false more than once.
But these are more believable than the egg comments because this time there are non-anonymous comments that say similar things.
No bias here. I’d rather they kept their thoughts out of the press.
ummm swizzle81, our OL was the above average part of our rush offense. TJ is an average back that was running behind a real good run blocking OL.
TJ had numerous opportunities with first down runs and the run game averaged a little over a yard on 1st down.
This is ridiculous!
First ,from what everyone should clearly remember, unless they suffer from dementia, Chad got no brake or slack when he got injured!
Some cheered his injury, some benched him, and from some polls the majority of the fans booed him out of town.
If Chad who took that team 3 times to the playoffs, and risked his career playing injured, the heart and soul of the team, received such a treatment why should now the fans care about an overrated and old QB.
What makes it even more ridiculous, is that Favre’s ONLY strength was his arm; and this all but done.
I think some comments have more to do with one more chance to be proven right about someone’s support for Favre, than FOOTBALL itself
(on this past sunday i mean)
Seanmac…
“I have zero interest in throwing money at Matt Cassel, which in any event is impossible considering Favre’s cap number ”
They can release Favre (or trade him or have him retire) and his cap number for 2009 will be ZERO. Care to rethink?
It is possible, but I agree, Cassel will cost too much and hasn’t convinced me he’s worth it yet.
Steve…
That’s at least two anonymous sources providing the comments weren’t fabricated, of course!
Chad got no slack for his injuries? My god… The guy got the second largest signing bonus in league history (at the time) after missing 1/2 of 2003 with an injury and sucking the rest of it.
In 2004/2005 everyone blamed Herm. People didn’t get fed up with Chad’s injuries until they thought Clemens was a player after the Atlanta game in the 2007 preseason..
True. We were talking specifically about last year though (how Chad played hurt – torn ligaments in his ankle – and some people said he sucked because of his performance whereas others said his performance could not be fairly judged since he was hurt).
bent, so a reporter will lie and attribute it to one anonymous source, but not 2? Come on..
The media is having a feeding frenzy right now in regards to Favre driving newspaper sales and page hits by the buckets..
In any event, I’m not defending Favre, he should take his ass back to Ms. But to say this is good for the team, to have this kind of dysfunction aired out in public is aggravating coming from a blog run by Jets fans..
Know what I mean?
I could maybe see one unscrupulous reporter making up one such quote, but two completely fabricated quotes from two different authors about the same team in one season?
bent, yes, but plenty stuck by Chad and many wanted him to start over Clemens this summer.
Let’s face it, regardless of the cause, we had 3 of 6 seasons under Chad that were over by Halloween. He certainly didn’t ear n much loyalty with that kind of inconsistancy..
jets, it’s not inconsistency, when Chad was healthy we went to the playoffs, when he was hurt we stunk. And by the way, I was one of those that wanted him to start over Clemens this summer and almost every other Jets fan I spoke to about it said something like “wow, chad? he’s done man, he’s got no arm anymore”. Now I’m saying Favre should start over Clemens and getting the same response
Bent said: “Wonder what odds I could get on [Favre] for comeback player of the year next year?”
Two words: Tom Brady. Duh.
Chad is useless. Miami played a historically easy schedule this year. They hosted 4 west coast teams at 1pm est which won at a 95% clip league wide this season. The avoided a Bills home game and caught the Jets the week after their season was ended.
He’ll implode in the playoffs and Miami will win 6 games next year…
Brady it seems has had complications in his recovery and some are reporting he could miss next season as well, hence the Matt Cassel to the Jets thing being unlikely
H
Bent, if the Jets cut Favre and he goes to MN he wins comeback player of the year. No doubt about it..
IMO, Chad should have made the pro bowl this year over Brett, and probably would have if the voting was at the end of the season. He was throwing to a questionable first-round pick and a bunch of absolute nobodys, and took a 1-win team to the playoffs. Give credit where credit is due
And I don’t know (or care) about comeback player of the year, but based on how he played midseason, I think he’s got at least one more good year left in him. Remember how many times we thought Vinny’s career was over lol
HEY KNUCLEHEAD FIRE MANGINI/FARVE WORSHIPERS.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE WORD ” TEAM ” MEANS !!!
(last comment was about brett not chad btw)
Sure. Chad was Chad and played well. But lets not pretend he’s something he’s not.. Their OC did an awesome job this season.
Yes, but Dan Henning has been around the league a long time and I don’t remember him ever getting this much credit before. Besides, if you think Henning made Chad look good in Miami, who made him look good with the Jets?
LETS GO BACK TO THE OLD UNIFORMS FROM THE 90S. i really miss them. who agrees?
As long as I never have to see those Titans uniforms again
If we had a ‘clueless’ Chad this year we would still be playing.
Steve;
Somewhere in between mid season and end of season lies Farve. however, how do you think the chemistry of the team would work out ?
…and I hate the 90s uniforms, stick to the originals.
This whole thing is ridiculous.
1-This is a badly coached team-bad schemes on both offense and defense
2-How many wide open receivers did BF miss? Our scheme had very few open guys-game after game. Did he throw a couple bad ones -sure. BUT, the stats are same year after in this “offense”. The receivers were NEVER open-what’s that about, except coaching. Do they all suck? Miami had NO ONE and they figured out how to get them open for Chad (who still has no arm).
3-Did the defense stop ANYBODY? EVER? That doesn’t help the offense.
4- Now you have Shein on SNY telling everyone the crappy offense was Mangini’s fault not Shotty or Favre. Bizarre.
5-Don’t forget year 1 10-6 was against a cupcake sched. Then with a real sched we get 4-12 and this year with ANY coaching we could have been 12-4 or better.
This is truly a complete bunch of crap at all levels. Something is wrong with this team and it is NOT about just Favre . Except for Jenkins and most often Reavis the D stunk. How did that work out. Do they all stink as well?
I know everyone has theories, but let’s start with Mangini, Shotty and Sutton. They made the whole team look crappy week after. Did everyone actually watch the games.
I’ll keep saying it -this team played 2 or 3 good games all year–SO DID KC, OAK, STL,SF and every crappy team in the league except for DET. What’s so “special” about that?
Good point Fonz, and if the players really don’t want him back then neither do I, but I’m still not convinced that’s the case. I’m also not convinced Coles isn’t the biggest problem as far as chemistry, and I’d like to trade him if we can and maybe draft someone in the 2nd or 3rd round to play alongside Cotchery, or perhaps Stuckey or Clowney can grow into that role
Jets………..what is it that you do not understand? Are you Johnny Stine with a different name?
Are you still numb from the 24-17 loss?
The Offensive player of the week award?
The second comeback player of the NFL award?
From the 1-15 to 11-5 TEAM record?
From the fact that he is in consideration for the NFL MVP award?
I suspect that you must be one of those knowledgeable fans who cheered his injury. Stop playing that stupid Fantasy Football game.
Annonomous comments equals leadership??? Seems like just the opposite to me. Real locker room leadership would keep it just there, in the locker room. Favre stunk the last 5 weeks, however he was NOT the only one who stunk. There are plenty of others who deserve to be called out as well. Inclusing TJ in the first Pats game. Overall, the entire team was just plain flat over the last five games so whoever these great so called leaders are who wont attribute their name to quotes seem a little late to me. Free agents looking for places to go will be more likely to pass over our Jets if more of this locker room talk gets to the press.
How can woody johnson possibly read comments like from his players and think that he should bring back favre?
How could any incoming coach read these and think favre should be here?
And most importantly…how can any of you favre apologists deny that he just should not be here?!
steve,
Have you seen Miami games? He gets players wide open all the time with play design. Of course Parcells effect is at play here as well. Remember Henning was here in 1998 with Vinny Greenballs.
He’s played well, but there are other things at work here. His team is 1-5 when their opponent scores more the 20. The Jets were 4-4
jas, excellent post I agree 200%
jets, OK, so let’s put aside Henning getting fired from Carolina because the receivers not named Steve Smith could NOT get open… who made Chad look good when he had his good years with the Jets? Edwards? Hackett? Heimerdinger?
Nikolas… What don’t you understand? I’m saying Chad played well, but he wasn’t the sole reason they turned around..
easy schedule, only beating 1 playoff team. the Jets beat 3.
1-5 when their opponent scores more then 20 points to the defense having a hand in this as well.
Winning Come back player of the year 2 times in 3 years isn’t an honor, it basically means you’ve been inconsistant for the last 5.
Offensive player of the week? So what, Favre was as well…
Lets talk next year, I’m glad he’s gone..
Steve, I never said Chad was bad. He’s a fine Qb and generally beats all the weak teams on his schedule, which is why he had good years in 2004, 2006, and 2007. Next year he plays the NFC and AFC south and is likely to underperform.
the bottom-line is that he’s not reliable and limits and offense too much to be a legitimate SB contender…
As for Sanchez, I think he would look great in green. I have been spending the day thinking about QBs potentially in draft or otherwise reasonably available for jets this year as FA or trade. And Sanchez is not a third round pick – clear first round pick. Issue is that he is a junior and may not declare, esp now that no rookie salary cap next year. Stafford and Bradford are prob gone very early if they declare but some chance sanchez lingers to a place where jets either get him or can reasonably trade up to get him.
And did you see rose bowl? he looked great. Just not sure if i were him i would leave USC when you have almost whole offense back next year and being king of la
Not exactly surprising that everybody is starting to speak up with Favre down back home they can have a free for all of course if Favre on the slim chance comes back, its going to be a really twisted relationship more so than now.
Fair enough, he does limit offenses and at times invites defenses to stack the line against the run, but that’s different from saying he’s useless or his success is solely because of schemes and schedules
Jas;
Really, do you like the state of the franchise now???
You are really, really hurting, arent you?
NIKOLAS:
After everything is said and done I , promosie you you will be elected the the Jets “blog of fame”. You have been so right !!
I’m speechless, this team went from promising to putrid, we can only guess and argue who saying what, the fact to the matter is, Mangini was the captain of this ship, and when Favre, Schotty and company were poking holes in it he did the worst thing he could possibly do, nothing, that is what cost him his job, as for the upcoming QB controversy, we don’t need to pay a QB 11 million clams that does not have the desire or ambition to start over and create a working chemistry with the team, and for those who say its not about the money, Brett is not exactly taking a pay cut, or giving back a part of the 11 million reasons why he came back, now I agree with a lot of you, if he is going to dedicate himself and become an empirical part of the team then ya try it again, if your losing your tools then compensate with strong leadership, don’t waste our time as fans and give us excuses we deserve more.
Now I understand the real reason Mangini was fired. Besides his Defense underperforming, there was a QB issue. The QB didn’t mix with the team, but more importantly Mangini played Brett while he was hurt. He should have rested Brett a game and played KC. We couldn’t have done worse than 1-4 with KC. Mangini lost control of the team. That is why a seasoned HC such as Shanahan is needed to stop this BS before it gets started.
Fonz….thank you, but you and a few others were there with me too!
Jason
You hit it..he was the captin of the ship. I said it before and I’ll say it again EM was the HC and it is his job to make sure everything is in place…everything!!
No balls no glory,, he had no balls this year…note this year!!
Why?
Because of BF…
Time for all of us to move on. Farve owes it to the Jets and before the end of Feb…are you in or not. He is sitting back fat and happy waiting to see who comes in here and can he control them..
He is going to be 40..why would I buy a seat because of him…Woody…come on!!
This team is solid with or with out him.
a few points_
the jets were 3-5 against the afc/nfc west… the pats and fish were 7-1 and the bills were 6-2.
the pats had the same home/away schedule (meaning 4 games on west coast) and they deliberately asked to have two 2 game road trips to minimize the wear and tear. The Jets did not, and ended up with 4 trips instead. that could not have helped. Pats 3-1 on west coast. Jets 0-4.
the fish had only 1 game in the western time zone and 0 in california. they got seattle, san fran, oakland and san diego at home… and kc, rams, denver and ariz on the road. In 4 years we’ll have that advantage with the nfc west and in 3 years we’ll have it with the afc west. the fish took advantage and pats showed up to play and did well.
there are 3 reasons the jets crashed and burned
1) mangini coached scared and showed no signs of the admirable (and successful) aggressiveness from year one — gone was the belichick/parcells school of going for it on 4th and 1 or 4th and 2 in your opponents territory and in was nonsensical inconsistent momentum and back-breaking punts to improve field position by 15 yards. you cannot win that way and it is demoralizing to your team. his decisions on the opening drives against san fran and seattle doomed them for those games, making it that much harder to win.
2) total inability to make adjustments. this is an indictment of both coordinators and the HC of the NYJ. other than the tenn game, week after week the team was outmatched… this applies to wins against arizona, kc, and buffalo (2nd game).
3) arbitrary decision-making about how to maximize effectiveness of players by mangini. so keller dropped a catchable (but not so great pass) against sf on 3rd down… why should he be lambasted and disappear from the game plan for weeks after that? he is our most dangerous receiver (consdiering the TE matchups with LB’s). where was leon washington for weeks? he was missing in action – and not because he didn’t show up. how was he not part of the game plan? and why not utilize clowney’s speed?
tannenbaum has done a very solid job filling the holes – his one major mistake was not sending pennington out of division.
good for chad. he deserves the accolades. but let’s remember, the fish are likely going to be 1 and done.. and chad will likely never get out of the second round – ever – on that team.
so let;s cut bait with favre… give clemens and ratliff a chance and move on. we cannot suffer with a totally immobile QB on his last legs.. it was great that the jets got him.. but we need to offer the new coach a fresh slate and a chance to do some different things.
Hey Farve Worshipers:
LET ME BE THE FITRST TO TEL JOU:
CHAD PENNINGTON IS THE ” MVP ” OF THE NFL.
big
well said…can only hope Tannenfarve reads it..
Fonz.
He is not comeback nor MVP on this team. Told you before, I’m a Chad fan but he was going nowhere here and Farve was a better fit for the run. The run is over and we need to move on..including BF!!!!
Nikolas:
What do you think the rest of the Farve Worshipers will say after Penningon Accepts his MVP trophy ?//
Fonz, Hangar, first of all I’d bet you anything Peyton Manning will be the MVP, not Chad. Second of all, while I would like to have Brett back, I think Chad deserved his pro bowl spot, which leads me to… Third of all, what does one have to do with the other? The question is do we want Brett back instead of Clemens or Rattliff or Ainge, not instead of Chad. If anything, perhaps we should have figured out from what happened with Chad that just because a guy has an underperforming, injury-riddled season doesn’t mean he won’t come back healthy and perform well next year. I would have taken my chances with Chad this year, I’ll take my chances with Brett next year.
hey fonz..
http://www.finheaven.com
If this is asserting leadership, then you must think that Terrell Owens is a great leader!!! this is far from great leadership and quite an embarrassing way to act for a TEAM. didnt see any of these comments when Favre was throwing 6 TD’s against Arizona (all needed by the way) or leading fantastic drives against the Pats and Titans on the road….
At least T.O. has the balls to come out and say it in front of the camera
Steve
Read my post…never said he is MVP…just that if it did happen, it would have not here.
Second which Brett? The Rat I hope… Not the one who could give 2 st!t$ about you or any JETS fan. Ego and $ drive him which is great when you are in your prime. This guy is all about Brett…
No!No!No!……….Get that top CB from the Raiders, Ellis is solid, it’s Coleman who is under-performing. If not so, go after Marcus Spears and Suggs…..Most likely they will end up in Miami…..This means trade (preference) or cut Bryan Thomas……Fire Sutton……that off. coordinator’s play calling seems childish, with no no goal. LT Ferguson has been a utter an disappointment…..gets beat on the inside for a quick atlethic tackle….. that’s embarrassing. Look at Woody’s size, it’s just ridiculous…..more pass rush instead of rushing three so often. draft a safety, opposite Kerry Rhodes……. Get a big receiver that could run, etc……..too bad, i think we’ve lost our 2nd,3rd,4th, and 5th…..I don’t know what we’re getting for Vilma
Yeah the MVP thing was directed at Fonz, sorry. As for the second part… you know which one I meant, and I don’t care what his thought process is or what drives him, just that he’s performed on the field – Not only all those years in Green Bay, but for the better part of this season as well. Is he consistent? No. But he gives us a chance, even if it is a small chance, to actually go somewhere. With Clemens or Rattliff or Ainge, we’re rebuilding. We’ve been rebuilding since Bill Parcells left. Enough is enough.
Le’Sean, Nnamdi Asomugha is arguable the best CB in the league and there’s no way they would let him go, besides we have arguable the second best CB in the league in Darrelle Revis. The reason I mentioned Ellis is his age, salary, and off the field issues, Coleman I didn’t even realize was still with the team so yeah I’d agree with that. Thomas and Pace would have to go if we switch to the 4-3, but otherwise they’re OK. And I believe we’re getting a 3 or 4 for Vilma… which sucks.
Steve
Thanks…enough is enough…but we took the shot this year, unless this guy becomes part of the team( which I do not believe he will).. why wait until late Feb to tell us???? This is his typical bs.it is time to cash in and move on. Some one needs to tell him and I’d love it to be us.
NO one wouls be speaking up in the locker room unless many many of t he players felt this way. It’s definitely not a surprise. But just because Favre is a prima donna jerk, it doesn’t relive Mangini of his responsibilties to have treated Favre like everyone else. He absolutely should have benched Favre after the Buffalo game. 3 horrible performances in a row before the Seattle game.
Of course I am sure that Woody and Mike T pressured Mangini to let Favre do his thing.
It’s all a freakin’ mess that has set this team back years.
will somebody please tell me any ratliff college stats. What has he done besides preseason against backups
http://utah.scout.com/a.z?s=365&p=8&c=1&nid=2706606
Fonz…. the NFL, Commercials, TV and sports Media want FAVRE to the pro-bowl and Peyton for MVP. Those who know football well enough, know who the real MVP is and he used to be ours .
Because Chad is not our QB anymore, it does not make the issue redundant or irrelevant as some Favre and front office supporters want to make it. This issue speaks volumes about the Owner, the GM and the Front Office of this franchise. You simply cannot trust them about anything. The players have sensed that and I suspect reputable NFL coaches. Why you think Cowher said thanks but no thanks?
This franchise is in a real crisis now and I do not know how we can get a leader! That is why I was all for Bill Cowher!!
Remeber..Belicheat and Parcells left when they had to deal with ….Woody!
Some where on here someone mentioned why couldn’t Mangini sit Favre? Um duh do you think he will give up the most impressive streak in sports history for the New York Jets? Favre complicates things. He should have a better year next year, but he will not sit the bench and if his old body cant take it he will still play and we will deal with this again next year against a harder schedule and Tom Brady probably being back. Next year is the year to transition. We are getting a new coach, hopefully a new offense, and a possible 3-4 to 4-3 switch. Lets regroup. We recently suck in odd years anyway.
Oh and we pretty much have to cut Chris Baker. I think that is why he was being a good company man for once. He is not woth that deal he was given and if we cut him we owe him none of it. It would be nice to get that 13 million back from Favre too.
Welcome to a New Year of Jets Football
I have been saying this all along.
It was a mistake to fire Mangini and Favre is a cancer on the team. I hate him and I hope he retires.
He single handedly ruined our season.
Hopefully Woody hears the cries from the players in the locker room, a large percentage of Jet fans, and others around the league that Favre is clearly not worth $13 mil next year or even worth having on the team. Until he realizes this, next year is going to be a wash like this year was, no matter who the coach is.
JustAGreenGuy, if that happens again next year, one possibility would be to start him each game and then replace him right away, thereby keeping the streak intact.
Otherwise, they need to go to him and say Brett, we appreciate everything you’ve done for us, but right now we don’t feel having you out there is in the best interest of the team, so we’re going to give you the choice: we can put you on the bench until you’re healthy, or we can release you. There’s also a third option which is he may just choose to retire at that point if that happens.
All that said, keep in mind he would have had a full camp and preseason to get his body ready for the season, so it’s unlikely we’ll be in that situation again with him.
Whoever the new coach is, it looks like it’ll be a guy who has never been an HC before, or, like Callahan, who was an HC briefly and felt robbed of the job by circumstances. It’s hard to imagine a guy like that wanting to risk his first year with a now 40 year old gunslinger whose skills are eroding, coming off a season where he essentially cost his team the playoffs.
Add into that the cap situation in which we gain thirteen million in space by cutting Favre and the additional seventh round pick that, I believe, the Packers will owe us in compensation, and it would seem like a no-brainer to anybody to let the old soldier fade away, anybody who didn’t have to sell fifty-thousand PSLs.
My vote, for what it’s worth, is cut Favre, sign a good, young, free agent corner (not Asomugha) and look for wide receiver help in the draft. And if you can trade Coles for Ocho, I’m in favor of it. Coles, Cotchery and Stuckey are all the same type of receiver. We need versatility and the move would give us more flexibility in the draft.
BTW, the purpose of the grumbling in the press, as far as I can see, is that some players don’t want Favre back and they want it to get out that they don’t.
Madden Curse. It happened again. Amazing.
I get what you’re saying Andrew, I just don’t agree that this is the time to go young (yet again). There was a point this season with this team that for the first time in my life we looked like we could go to the superbowl. If we keep our superbowl winning quarterback and bring in a superbowl winning coach like Mike Shanahan, I think we’ve got a shot. It’s a year-to-year league, if we keep looking to the future then we won’t have one.
I’ve come under the final conclusion that the Jets are doomed for permenant failure.
Favre needs to go. But if Favre still wants to play where does he go? Easy answer, Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay choked their way out of the playoffs, and Garcia played like crap. Favre also played like crap, but so did the entire rest of team whether its o-line, wide receivers, defense, coaching, or even special teams when Leon wasn’t involved. Face it the Jets suck as an organization. Garcia is just about 40 just like, Favre, so the whole age issue probably wouldn’t be as big of a deal since they’re the same age. It would make perfect sense to dump Garcia and bring in Favre. That way Favre would actually have a team that is pretty good, and has a decent defense. A Favre lead team must have a good defense. He had it with the packers. The D counted on one INT from Favre, and Favre counted on a turnover from his D to even it up. The Jets D was pitiful. Put him on the Buccs and they’re playoff bound with quite a lot of potential.
Have fun winning 4 games next year with Ratliff!!! Or (if my above scenario plays out) picking up another 40 year QB in Garcia. HA wouldn’t that be hilarious.
some of you favre cult members are senseless at times…better yet, all the time! you couldnt possibly be jet fans. you jerks base a man’s legacy on what he did with a another team, the past is the past, let it go. as far as the JETS, what matter is jones has produced since he’s gotten here, favre hasnt even earned half of his paycheck so far.
also…i am really starting to get tired of the “injury” excuses……this is the NFL, who isnt playing injured?? favre’s miscues on the field had nothing to do with physical disability on the field, it was his damn brain, and desicion making. and you wanna talk about injuries??? how about favre’s replacement in GB, who was under more scrutiny and pressure than favre was this year. rodgers dislocated his shoulder, with damaged ligaments and still out performed favre during that stretch of playing hurt aaannnd facing tougher defenses than favre has faced….and this wasnt an injury looked into for bad performance, we all saw when it happened. and i dont wanna hear anyting about them not doing well this year, any packer would acknowledge he is not the reason, but it is the defense.
favre peeked in 96 and has been nothing for the past 8 years…..and some of you morons have the nerve to bring up inconsistency when you speak about chad?? how about y we look at favres numbers the past couple years…and you tell me whats consistent?…besides the int’s..lol!
It isn’t surprising to hear that the chokers/quitterswhiners that occupy the Jet lockerroom are upset at Favre; after all, look at the accomplishments of this all-star team.
TO all my jets fans that article was published to do exactly what it is doing SPLITTING THE JETS LOCKER ROOM and ALL US FANS…IT was probably said by Billicek to once again put a demise to this JETS team(JUST JOKIN) WE need to stay the course, ignore all these comments until something is proven, and BE as ONE not DIVIDED…THE best way to stick it to ‘em is ignore their BS and move forward…THE TJ interview was real, players are questioning FAVRE’s dedication to the “TEAM PLAY”…With the cap number, favre stats from this year, and better options out there(I WILL BE POSTING ALL OFFSEASON ABOUT CASSEL) and getting CASSEL to stick it to Billicek FAVRE should be nothing but a distant memory to this team next season..And imagine all the great info CASSEL could give our defense on their offensive scheme in NEW ENGLAND….AND another thing if the players for the JETS are spouting of at the mouth about FAVRE its about time cause the coaching staff and the players looked like ZOMBIES on the sideline all year…MAYBE this team will finally get a spark under there butts, unite as one unit, and come out next year with a chip on there shoulders and play with intensity to prove that this team wins as a team and not by FAVRE’s historic past….ALL JET FANS WE”VE been FAVRED….WE NEED TO GET OVER IT>>>>
“some of the players are starting to do exactly what this team needs … assert their own leadership at the expense of Brett Favre.”
Exactly what this team needs? Anonymous players sniping to reporters while the team searches for a head coach? That’s your interpretation of “leadership?” I’m just glad you’re only writing about the team and not running it. I’d much rather have a team of men who, even if they had resentments about other players, had the character to rise above them and not feed the media’s insatiable appetite for the public flogging of people they only recently deified.
“Distrust all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful” Friedrich Nietzsche.
Make no mistake about it, I hope to see Favre fade into the sunset with his 13 million dollar cap hit. I wanted Favre gone for the NY Jets’ benefit, but after reading the above article, I wish it at least as much for his own.
someone riddle me this……as of now….what are the intangibles that favre brings, to make a non contender into a playoff team???please somebody tell me!! favre can bring the bucs to the playoffs but not the jets??? hahaha…no better yet…favre can do it but garcia cant?? if you ask me, at least garcia is mobile and can scramble for decent yards or buy himself some time in the pocket with his mobility……and there isnt a throw that favre can make that garcia cant…better yet alot of nfl qbs can make any throw that favre can if not better at this point……..so cut the malarchy, the love fest is over, time to see what the young guys can do….i mean they cant do much worse( i really mean that with all my heart)!
gang green i understand where you are coming from……..the media arent worth the dirt they walk on…but truth IS truth, and you cant deny it, they just know how to rub it in.
Obviously if Favre is going to play like he did the last 5 games, it would be time to retire immediately. However, I’m not entirely convinced that that is the case. They were 8-3 through 11 games.
Unless Tampa Bay decides they want to start from scratch with a young kid, the smart thing to do would be to get favre and dump garcia.
Better wide receivers, butter O and D lines. Much better defense and better weather.
ridinmywave, I don’t think he can make a non contender into a playoff team, I just think he can help a playoff team get to the superbowl, and we already have the talent around him to be a playoff team with the right coach in place.
That said, I’ll take up your challenge: There are a lot of throws that Favre made in Arizona for instance, that Garcia never could have made at any point in his career. His arm strength isn’t what it used to be, but it still was stronger through the first 2/3 of the season than Garcia’s ever was. The proof is in the tapes, particularly where defenses were playing. Against, Garcia this year and Pennington last year, defenses played closer to the line of scrimmage, cutting off short passing and running lanes. This season with Favre, defenses guys on the blitz, but also kept guys in deep coverage, leaving the middle of the field open. This is the reason gunslingers like Favre get picked so often, and it’s also the reason their running backs are more effective. Compare TJ this year to TJ last year, some of that is the o-line, but mostly it’s the Favre effect. Ahman Green, Dorsey Levens, Ryan Grant, look at what those guys did with Favre and without him. TJ exploited the same weaknesses, and so did Leon in the rare cases we actually used him.
RIDINMYWAVE, one major issue this season was the fact that the media over played FAVRE coming to NY.I can see it from the other players in the locker room stand point that all-be-it FAVRE was and may still be one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game…BUT to ignore the rest of the team in the media and to call the JETS ,” FAVRE”S TEAM” all season is an insult to every other player who sweats and bleeds on the field for this team…AND when the coaches adjusted the play calling, formations, and gave special props and considerations to 1 player(FAVRE) on his first year on the team I dont blame them for being pissed…I agree with SUBWAYE about having character and keeping player oppion in the locker room…BUT when one player overshadows the whole franchise if I were a veteran JET player i would go public too…THE FAVRE SHOW needs to hit the road and let the JETS recover from the media frenzy that has split this team in two…ANd if Woody and Mike T haven’t seen what this FAVRE MANIA has done to this team they shouldn’t be running the franchise…..
To blame the season on Favre is accurate. He took a 4 win team and won 9.For any quarterback to come into a situation like that and perform as he did is spectacular. The coach should be fired and Favre should be thanked. As for Jones and the other whiners.Grow sum ,then maybe other great players will won’t to play with the JETS.The Defense sucked, the receivers dropped too many passes and the O-line, EXCLUDING THE CENTER,couldn’t protect a sandwich from Rosie O’DONNEL..
Jones should watch his mouth ,runningbacks don’t last that long
Punisher if your willing to turn your back on the rest of the JET team and back 1 player then the team as a whole you should move in with FAVRE and be his lover…No one said FAVRE’s play on the field was the only reason the jets lost…. and to crack on the best AFC running back this year proves your football knowledge…The JETS are a team not a one man show and if ya think otherwise I’d like to see FAVRE man the field by himself next year and beat someone…
AND another thing PUNISHER Favre didn’t quarter back the 4-12 team he got a newly revamped offensive line that he couldn’t even use to his advantage and still threw 22 picks…
Yeah that’s a little extreme, there were a lot of personnel changes that contributed to us winning 5 more games this season (Jenkins, Richardson, Pace, Faneca…) Favre didn’t sink or save this team, he contributed to both its rise and its fall, but didn’t bring about either singlehandedly
Jones has got some cajones saying all that stuff. He’s a backstabber to his own team for doing, it but cajones he does have. Much more respectable than the coward “anonymous” source. I want to know who that punk is. Jones will be a subpar qb next year without Favre, I agree with Steve’s points.
rb not qb
ANy QB- we all know that Favre forces teams not to put 8-9 men in the box thats one of his great attributes to the team he plays on is his strong arm,,,But to say JONES will be sub par next year is a stretch..THIS offensive line gets another year to jell and if we get a strong armed quarterback to replace him I dont see how JONES production would be affected..If we start a rookie QB CLEMMONS,RATIFF,or AINGE although his carries per game would go up he wil face 8-9 man fronts trying to rattle the rookie QB and stuff the run that I will agree with ya on….
best news I READ/HEARD about our team since Tennessee! Favre MUST go!
kc wouldn’t be short for kellen clemens, would it? lol
AND iF we dont resign Richardson also JONES production will pay also…
Yeah, I didn’t realize he’s a FA… absolutely, we need to bring him back
yea that was another F-up we should have locked Richardson in for at least three years…WE all know next year we will be a run first offense no matter who we have as HC/OC whether it be FAVRE/FREE AGENT QB/or one of our back-ups I see alot of RUN,RUN,and just when u think we are going to pass RUN somemore because the new coaching staff isn’t going to allow 22+ turnovers from the QB position….
I hope so, and I’d like to see Leon Washington get his share. With those two different running styles and an effective passing game, that would give defensive coordinators a lot to think about.
I don’t think we’ll see that many turnovers from Favre because early this season he didn’t have the chemistry with his receivers and later on he clearly wasn’t right, hopefully we won’t have either of those issues this season. If he does, I think we can agree he needs to do what’s best for the team and not try to play when his body isn’t up to it (although if that happens, I think we’re probably screwed with or without him)
AND did anyone get a look at the free agent running backs for next year WOuld love to see Brandon Jacobs in a GREEN JERSEY…image the one two punch of Jacobs and WASHINGTON TALK ABOUT THUNDER AND LIGHTNING
ooo… that’s interesting. link?
Maybe you should learn how to read, Greengang.2007 ,25th in the league in passing,2008-16th.2007 rushing 19th, 2008 9th .2007 receiving 23rd , 2008 16th. TD’s passing 22 2008, 2007 15. TD’s rushing 15 2007, 2008 20.
Only one player in the top 70 for tackles, Barton
its on the NFL.com website would link it for ya but dont know how too sorry..GOOGLE -FREE AGENT RUNNING BACK FOR 2009 it will come up on there…
When your two best wide receivers only get 5 td’s a peice ,your teams in trouble
ok thanks, ill check that out
Gang Green, Brandon Jacobs and Washington? Thunder and Lightening?
Does that mean you’re giving up on Jones after his amazing pro bowl season?
Punisher u drunk…. u just confirmed what i said Farve would of sucked on the 2007 team Thanks for the vote of confidence appreciate it…the offensive line play was horrible…Favre would of had 33 interceptions on that team and sacked even more because he has such escapabilty from the pocket with his 39 year old legs…and i know he does a good job of sliding in the pocket to create time to throw so dont reply that to me either…YOUR POSTING ACTUALLY CONFIRMS EVERYTHING I SAID WE HAD BETTER O-LINE PLAY,BETTER RUNNING GAME,AND DUSTIN KELLEN TO EXPOSE THE CENTER OF THE FIELD DUDE GIVE UP U LOST THIS CONVO….
ANY QB- DONT PUT ME ON THE SPOT LIKE THAT BUT IN ALL HONESTY I WOULD HAVE TO SAY YES…NOT BACK STABBING JONES BUT JACOBS IS ONE BIG MUTHA F’r and is a threat to break it at any time do to his I’ll run your ass over attitude…HE CAN WEAR OUT A DEFENSE BY THE FOURTH QUARTER AND THEN MAKE THE PASSING GAME LOOK THAT MUCH BETTER BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE THE ENERGY TO GET TO THE QB…AND LETs NOT EVEN GO TO THE RED ZONE EVERY TIME HE TOUCHES THE BALL INSIDE THE 20 = 7PTS….
Any, TJ has had an excellent season and deserves a lot of credit, as do new additions Tony Richardson, Allen Faneca, Damien Woody, and yes, Brett Favre. However, he is past the age where most running backs begin to decline, and Brandon Jacobs is a great young back. Not saying we should “give up on him”, or even that he’s necessarily going to decline – Curtis Martin was effective well beyond that age – but considering the numbers on how most backs perform at that age, I think it would be wise for the Jets to weigh all their options… but I think Jacobs would re-sign with the Giants anyway
Gang Green, we don’t know what Favre would have done on that team. A team is a lot of players playing together, you can’t say “if this player was on that team, he would have done better/worse”, there are A LOT of factors that go into that. It’s the same argument as “would Chad have done a better job for the Jets this year than Brett?”, nobody really knows the answer to that, it’s a different system, different group of players, for all we know someone on our o-line could have missed an assignment and all of a sudden he’s back on IR. We just don’t know.
Steve i agree and I bet Jacobs would command the big bucks too…I would like to know though what his going rate would be JUST TO MAKE IT INTERESTING..
“you can’t say “if this player was on that team, he would have done better/worse”, there are A LOT of factors that go into that.”
Actually Steve, I would say that if Favre was on the Packers this year they would have won more than 6 games.
article that covers this:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=wojciechowski_gene&id=3804255&sportCat=nfl&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos1
Steve, i was responding to PUNISHER’S comment that BRETT took a 4-12 team to 9-7 this year…By no way shape or form can u compare this years team to last years team with all the free agents we signed.Punisher was the one that stated FAVRE is responsible for the 5 more wins this year and I dont agree it was a combination of a better o-line,revamped defense(althought they weren’t that impressive) and a better established running game THE WHOLE TEAM was more successful…
Yeah I know I was just responding to the “33 interceptions” claim, I get what you’re saying about the offensive line, but we don’t really know how he would have done on that team any more than we know what Chad Pennington would have done on this one.
Any, sorry, but I don’t agree with you on that one. There were other factors there as well, there defense was disappointing after looking so good last year, there were injuries, Ryan Grant regressed (which I think Brett had a lot to do with, but not everything to do with it), and they’re just a different team. Maybe they would have won more with Brett, maybe less, maybe the same.
2007 passing yds =1765, 2008=3472 yds.
2007 peddington sacked 26 times, 2008 sacked 30 times, this proves O-line sucks
last three games–Keller, Jones,Stuckey,Cotchery,Coles,all totalled 3 td’s.
btw Gang Green, after looking at the free agent running backs I googled free agent receivers…. Houshmandzadeh would be nice but I can’t image the Bengals won’t resign him, but how about Antonio Bryant or Lance Moore?

Because this story has come out, I think that Brett Farve will now not even want to be jet next year. You have No head coach, really No GM and now No quarterback. Good luck with that rebuilding process of the Jets, AGAIN and again and again and again and again. Don’t you guys get tired of this? Someone posted that it is the Jet fans that are getting screwed in all of this and that is probably so true. The jet fans are beginning to sound like the Chicago Cub fans of the NFL.
CEW – “you guys” implies you are not a JETS fan. Why are you in the building? What does a Cub fan sound like? I know I do not sound like one, because my team has managd to win a title after the sinking of the Lusitania
Geez rather touchy aren’ t we
by the way a cub fan sounds like you, a whiner. someone states the facts that the jets are always rebuilding and still going no where ever and you don’t like it. The truth hurts and perhaps that is why you are so upset. It’s Ok no one in the NFL thought you guys would go anywhere this year or any year for that matter. The fact that you guys had farve on the team this year is the only reason the rest of the football fans even watched your games.
Well now that I really got you upset I will be really imature and leave “your building”.
You should really learn to have a sense of humor about this or you will end up with major heart problems and that’s not good. Oh before I go, I do agree with one thing about what someone said on this forum. You really do have very ugly uniforms. Happy New Year and Enjoy! Bye
CEW – Happy New Year. Everything you stated was a subjective opinion, not a fact. What exactly is “rebuilding?” shouldn’t 31 teams attempt to rebuild every year as they did not win title?
I hope you know (but perhaps you didn’t) my comments were to be more “Tongue in Cheek”, than serious. And what am I doing in your building you ask. Well I was dying to hear how you jet fans were going to react to the comments about Farve being so distant and having his own office and so on and so on.
Now you right that “rebuilding” can be quite subjective. It just seems that whenever there is/was a story about the jets, it would concern how they are rebuilding. Or I love this one, “We’re only a player or two away”. I’m like, away from what??? As for every team “rebuilding” every year. I don’t think agree with that. Yes you want improvement, but with too much rebuilding and not enough improvement from the players you already have, well I believe you loose any team chemistry that a team needs to have to succeed. The End. And here you thought I left your building. Just don’t take things too personal OK. It’s not like I am being mean to you or your family or how you live your life.
thats funny that jones is a leader. favre is the reason he scored all those td’s this year. if we had chad or kellen the other defences would have stacked the box and jones would have had the same output as in 07. jones needs to go. get rid of him while his value is high. all the blame deserves to go on the whole team. the defence was getting run over down the stretch,no presure on the qb’s-they made kc’s qb look like montana. they had no pass rush. they need to cut the wastes(ellis and coles too) and get a coach that will show him talents on the feild talking and ciaching his players on the sideline when they are not getting the job done, not just showing a pissy face.
I find it ironic that anyone could think Chad could not have done better. Didn’t anyone notice how after Farve got “int happy”, they modified the offense(again) and essentially played “Chad ball” (short dinks and dunks). Chad was a master of the short ball, and as we saw Sunday, could throw long as well. Well, over 20 yards. But at least he hit his target.
Get out of the circle jerk with Woody and Mike. Farve must go!!!
Le’Sean Roberts:
“LT Ferguson has been a utter an disappointment…..gets beat on the inside for a quick atlethic tackle….. that’s embarrassing.”
I disagree. He was excellent this year and is only going to get better. He gave up three sacks, improved in the running game and should’ve been in the pro bowl
Ben:
Stats don’t tell the whole story about Ratliff in college. He came off the bench in his Junior year to unexpectedly lead the team to wins in a rivalry game and the Emerald Bowl (where he tore apart a secondary that included NFL player Dawan Landry). He entered his Senior year with some big expectations based on those performances, but although he did OK, was ultimately underwhelming. Still, he showed an ability to manage a short passing game with the threat of the occasional long ball which is all Brady Quinn did in college with better personnel.
Andrew:
I must reiterate that the Jets only get the extra 7th rounder if Favre retires this offseason, not if they cut him.
I can’t defend Favre or how lousy he played, and since I wasn’t in the locker room or otherwise around the team, I obviously have no idea whether any of this is true or not.
But I think it’s a sad day when “real leadership” is defined as an anonymous player throwing the QB under the bus in the papers. If this joker was a REAL leader, he would at least show some stones as Thomas Jones did and make the comments with his name attached. What a wuss.
But even more hilarious is how this has all become Favre’s fault. Now before I am flamed, make no mistake that I am not forgiving Farve for his absolutely wretched play down the stretch. But to imply that he was the only reason is ignoring the facts. Yeah, the fact that their run defense went from allowing 71.1 YPG through 11 games to allowing 128+ YPG in the last 6 had nothing to do with it, did it? Or the fact that our esteemed offensive coordinator couldn’t seem to find it in him to take the rock away from the guy who was turning it over and feed it to our running backs.
Again, Favre was AWFUL down the stretch. Not trying to mask that or make excuses in any way. But all of this after the fact bashing in anonymous fashing is BS. And then to be passed off as “real leadership” is ridiculous.
So no disrespect intended Bassett, but when you say “some of the players are starting to do exactly what this team needs … assert their own leadership at the expense of Brett Favre.”, I would argue that the team would have been better served had some players asserted leadership when it counted…you know, like maybe sometime during the last 6 games of the season.
I can’t speak for Bassett but I think the leaders he is referring to are the likes of Cotchery, Rhodes and TJ who stepped up and made comments, not the anonymous source.
As for the run defense, that clearly suffered as Jenkins wore down. We knew early in the year that he hated flying (for physical reasons) and yet he was awful in the SD and Oakland games and the last five (which included 2 more trips out West that obviously escalated the toll it took on him. Maybe they’d have been better off leaving him at home for those trips. As they only go West once next year, hopefully he won’t wear down this time.
Ferraro41,
You need to ask yourself 1 question…
How much pressure was put on our coaching staff by Woody and the gang to appease Favre, put the ball in his hands, and “let Favre be Favre”.
Mr. Furious, how soon you forget that Chad had an identical 1-1 TD/INT ratio under Mangini/Schott and averaged over an INT a game as well..
Maybe part of the problem is the OC and the receivers???
Steve:
I just read your comment to JAAG and the true reason why we lost four out of our last five and got Mangini fired : ” JustAGreenGuy, if that happens again next year, one possibility would be to start him each game and then replace him right away, thereby keeping the streak intact.”
Are you serious???? Your mancrush on Farve is making you delusional. I’m sure the the rest of the team (specially the other QB) would love that and make for great team chemistry. Like I said, Farveworshipers have no idea what ” team ” means.
Ridinmywave:
Your comments on Farve and the disastrous effects he has had on OUR team are facts. Only those delusional Farve fanatics that suffer from “battered wife syndrome” would want this guy back.
Nikolas:
You and I have been right on this dirt bag since it was announced close to midnight August 5th 2008 that he was comming to the Jets. A day that will live in Jet infamy !!!
Now I know why he first said to us that “you may not want me back” and Green Bay did not want him back, and three other teams inquired but said “no thanks” and only our disgraced owner would fracture the team for a few P$L’s.
Get this.
Tony Atlas, Jets Coach, just called Favre a “selfish player” and backed up Thomas Jones.
He also said Woody Johnson mingles the way Jerry Jones does. It is just that Woody doesn’t let the media know about it.
To: W. Johnson
From: Hank/Naples
Thank you singlehandedly destroying our promising football team and its coach. How many PSL’s were you able to get out of it, I trully hope none, nada, zilch. In fact, I hope that you lose sooo much money that it hurts you as much as you have hurt the fans.
You saw the effect of one of your acts was when Pennigton came back to stick to you where it hurts you the most (no playoff $$$$$). Wait untill next year when you’ll have not one but two Bellichiks to deal with.
Sell the team, get out of town, take the self centered dirt bag QB with you.
Kyle -
1. Do you have a link for those comments?
2. You must mean Teddy Atlas – Tony Atlas, the WWE hall-of-famer is currently working for “The World’s Strongest Man” Mark Henry in ECW.
I hear it on Max Kellerman, and yes I did mean Teddy Atlas.
Fonz – Sorry, but Peyton Manning was just named MVP (and rightly so).
On the brightside, I don’t think your rival Johnny Styne’s “mark my words, Pennington will be QB coach in KC next year” prediction will come true either.
Interesting, although he is out of a job now, since he was a Mangini-hired consultant, so may be a bit bitter.
Barton made some comments from the beach in today’s NJ.com blog (and remember he is now a free agent so perhaps has less reason to be careful about what he says):
“I think (Favre) played as best as he could,” Barton texted from the beach. “I am not one who points fingers. There are things we could’ve all done better. It’s just more obvious when a qb messes up.”
He could be bitter, but why would a guy like Teddy Atlas cry over something like this?
He is guaranteed a job in Cleveland when they hire Mangini and Pioli.
hank/nipples,
How does it make you feel that you have players on the Jets that are currently as we speak backstabbing their starting QB?
And the anonymous source is the most pathetic thing I have ever seen. Grow some, and if you’re going to talk attach your name to those statements. What a disorganized organization.
What QB in their right mind would want to play for the Jets right now?
How does all of this look to prospective coaches? Is the new coach going to have to deal with anonymous sources now?
The jealousy is becoming quite obvious.
Eric Barton is a loser. All he does is screw up the big play, why listen to what he has to say? He is out of a job come summer anyways.
Sammy G
It is frustration, not jealousy.
This team would be Superbowl bound with Chad Pennington.
Does nobody else realize that Eric Mangini had been working on an offensive playbook based on Pennington? Mangini loved Pennington, despite what you may hear elsewhere.
Mangini did not want Favre.
Kyle,
Whatever you’re smoking give me some.
You honestly think the Jets would be superbowl bound with…………..PENNINGTON?
Let me take a break so I can soak this all in and laugh for a couple of minutes.
1….
2…
Ok that’s better.
Pennington (noodle arm) won’t take any team he ever leads to the superbowl. Overall he’s a subpar quaterback. He had 1 lucky season, lets see how he does next year.
Why would Eric Mangini be “having a good laugh?” Because it’s becoming clear there were divisions and resentments in his locker room that he wasn’t able to diagnose or overcome and it cost him his job? I’m sure he’s doubled over in hysterics.
There are always egos, sensitivities and resentments to be managed on a football team – Keyshawn vs. Chrebet anyone? Or possibly an aging, big armed QB with a penchant for interceptions – is there a Vinny T. in the house?
It ultimately falls on the Head Coach to make it all work. To expect Mangini to be Parcells would have been unrealistic in his third year as HC, but to portray him as a helpless victim of things beyond his control is a poor interpretation of the facts.
I commented all season that Mangini’s shortcomings were likely on the job training and I wouldn’t have recommended firing him without having a clear upgrade at the ready, someone Parcells-like with the experience and winning aura to overcome whatever natural divisions may exist. What’s most disconcerting is that doesn’t appear to be the case and we’re looking at the latest hot assistant, who may find himself only beginning a training program of which Mangini just completed year 3.
If you go 1-4 down the stretch of a playoff hunt and you ONLY fire a coach and not the GM who set him up for this or the QB who SHOULD HAVE BEEN BENCHED it is creating a scape goat. Mangini coached a horrible game in Seattle, but his others were manageable. We should have beat Miami that was all Favre. Pick 6 on a screen. Who the **** forces in a screen pass?
Mangini’s ideal team was all high character guys who put the team first all of our additions, with the exception of Favre did that. Now people, whether annoymous or named are saying he hurt the team and wasn’t one of the guys. He may have been worshipped in Green Bay, but this isn’t Wisconsin. This is New York where tourists from Wisconsin are mugged. The locker room was already split by seasons end these comments mean little. It was a collapse a lot of blame to go around.
Punisher- Dan Marino used to hold many of those stats, but at 40 I didn’t want him to be my QB. Favre’s body is beat he has played over 100 straight games. Not everything always heals correctly.
Anyone remember when Drew Brees was a free agent and Chad was coming off surgery? Anyone still happy we didn’t take a shot at Brees?
Oh and TJ is around 30 we will need to replace him soon too.
Excellent points, subway
Just a little green guy,
So you’re saying Mangini should have benched the hof’er Favre at the end of the season when the Jets were still in the hunt for the playoffs?
And please tell me exactly who would you have replaced him with? Putting anyone of those guys in at that point of the season would not have resulted in anything positive.
Bent:
You mispelled Manning’s name. He is ” Sayton Manning”.
Thanks to “Fitzy”
I would have benched Favre at the half. He should have been benched in Seattle too. What about Brett looked likw a HOFer? KC or Ratliff could have thrown for less than 250 yds1 td and 3INTs. If a player can’t play because they are hurt the situation dictates putting in a reserve. In fact KC didn’t have a 3INT game in any appearance he had last year and our O line was swiss cheese. I stand by my comments. Chad with a more serious injury not only got us to the playoffs, but won a playoff game. He isn’t a HOFer, but he found a way to win.
If you wish to call me little. Say it to my face. I will set up a time and place with you. After you remove your lips from the washed up one’s butt. Favre put his legacy first.
JAAG:
RIGHT ON, RIGHT ON, RIGHT ON. These Farve Worshipers are delusional and are actually the reason why the Jets have had a dysfuntional franchise the last 40 yrs. Frontrunners demanding change when they are too ignorant to see that it caused the state Jets are in now compared to July.
JAAG:
Dummies that will not learn from past mistakes will be doomed to repeat them.
They deserve to get dirt bag back. Just like battered wives
Bent:
Are you going to tell me now that Sayton Manning deserved the MVP over Pennington? C’mon now, are you?
“RIGHT ON, RIGHT ON, RIGHT ON. These Farve Worshipers are delusional and are actually the reason why the Jets have had a dysfuntional franchise the last 40 yrs.” – Hank/Naples
Hank, do you actually have the nerve of blaming the jets pathetic failure of the last 40 years on Favre fans? Keep in mind he’s only been on the team for 5 months.
Please tell me you said that wrong, because I’m not sure if I’ve read something so stupid in my life time.
How do you build a great NFL program? You build it usually off one popular player and a super bowl.
Look at the Stealers, Packers, Patriots, and Colts, and in the past Cowboys and Broncos. You think fans are wearing Roethlisberger, Favre, Brady, Manning, Aikmen, and Elway jerseys all over the country because they have any relation with that city? No. You pick up as many band wagon’ers as possible and build a program that players want to play at with a coach that players want to play under.
But no, that’s not how we roll in New York City is it. We have to do it the old way with our old guys, in a sh^$ty system.
There were signs that the players for the Jets didn’t like Favre from the beginning. Remember Cole’s comments before the official collapse before the 49′ers game, now we’re hearing about Jones and the anonymous sources. The old schoolers didn’t want to lose their glory, and have all the credit go to Favre. The jealousy was deep. Hey anonymous source, you out there somewhere? I have a question for you mr. anonymous source, could you tell me one thing. Did you ever ask Favre out to dinner if that’s what you wanted so badly? Did the players welcome Favre? Would that have changed the way the season played out? Why were the players so jealous of the way the coaches handled Favre? You say, Mr. anonymous source, that Fave stayed in his office and was distant, well what did the players do to try to blend him in better with the team? Looking from the outside in I can tell you its a lot more difficult for 1 player to attempt to fit in with a group of players, than for that gorup of players making a conscience effort to welcome that player to the team. If he didn’t feel welcome that would explain why he was sitting in the office. The captains of this team were a major failure and a major dissapointment. Where is the leadership?
Hank/Naples
Chad was the real MVP, but it was well known that Peyton would get it because of the business interest involved. Like Favre’s pro-bowl selection.
Like the screwing of our team.
Bent
you should be “sorry” not for Fonz, but for the awkward position you are in. Now Peyton Mannings awrad -ahead of Chad-is your consolation prize?
Hank/Nikolas:
If I had to vote for the MVP, Manning would get it (and obviously the actual voters, who have no allegiance to Favre, Manning, Pennington or the Jets) agreed with me. I think Manning’s performance, on a team with many injuries, in leading them to win their last 9 games, including a couple of clutch moments was worthy of the award.
However, Chad had a great season that was worthy of MVP consideration too. He should absolutely be in the Pro Bowl and not Favre (although the fact that the voting took place in midseason when Favre was playing well factored strongly into that and should change in future). In my opinion though, I thought that Manning was more influential, as were Harrison and Haynesworth on their respective teams and Peterson on the Vikings.
Miami’s success had a lot to do with Chad, but also depended on a great running game, creative coaching and an 18 sack year from Joey Porter.
You are talking at me like I am thrilled Manning won as it justifies my view that Chad sucks or something, but that was never my view. If you recall, I love Chad, was really sorry to see him go, didn’t want to make the Favre trade, felt his 2007 struggles were injury related and expected him to bounce back. The fact it was with Miami and that cost us a playoff berth sucks.
The only differences between us are that I do not share your distaste for Favre’s personality and that I could see why they made the move because Favre has been a great player in the past and they felt they could rely on him to stay healthy more than Chad. And also that I chose to root for Favre as the QB of my favorite team, regardless of the fact that I wouldn’t have made the move if it were up to me.
You don’t need to be so defensive. Not everyone that disagrees with something you say is a “kool aid drinking Favre worshipper”.
Hank you just got owned in a major way.
Bent
You shouldn’t even go there. Look:
The facts are that Pennington outplaye\ Payton in every statistic escept total yards passing and that is only because Sayton threw about seventy passes more than Chad. Also Chad played with an inferior line resulting in about 50% more sacks, and 1000% more value to the team in winning the division.
I mean c’mon Bent just like the Pro Bowl, Pennington got shafted AGAIN by POLITICS. But thats OK, because what goes arround comes arround just at it did on Dec. 28th.
Hank. Sorry to tell ya, bro. Bent just drank your milkshake…. :-)
hank is a kool aid drinking Pennington worshipper.
Bent;
PS….. The reason I believe you also drank the Farve kool-aide is because i didn’t see you blame this guy for any of the problems that contributed greatly to our collapse and dysfunction of our offense at any time during the season.
Hank, number 1 its not Favre’s kool aid, its Favreaid. The term gets reinvented for Favre. That ought to piss you off as well.
And secondly, you seem to want to continue to dig yourself in a bigger hole. Bent owned you, and you keep digging. I’m enjoying this, so let me know if you need another shovel. you’re like the little engine that couldn’t.
Sammy G:
That was pretty funny, very original too.
Sammy G
Hey genious, shouldn’t you spell it Favraid?, three vowels toghether?, c’mon!!!!
Sammy G:
I’m just digging another hole so i find a place to put the dirt in. Lets wait for Bent’s answer
When speaking of Favre grammer and vowels don’t matter. It is all clearly explained in the journal of current Favrevents.
Hey genious, shouldn’t you spell it Together? An h behind tog? c’mon!!!
Sammy G;
Hey genius, Isn’t genious spelled genius? C’mon!!!
First off, I am not trying to “own” anyone. Merely defending myself against what I see as accusations that I am a hypocrite.
Neither of us can win an argument over who should or shouldn’t have won the MVP because the criteria is completely subjective. I outlined some reasons why Peyton deserved to win and you have outlined some good reasons why it should have been Pennington. I don’t think there is a nationwide bias against Pennington, but maybe there is an element of extra support behind Peyton because of his commercials and SNL appearances (although I had thought most found these to be annoying). If Favre had played well on Sunday, Pennington’s team would have missed the playoffs. Would he have deserved the MVP then?
I don’t understand the joke behind “Sayton”. Please enlighten me. Remember I am not an American, so that may explain why I am confused by it.
Finally, maybe you didn’t see me blame him for any of the Jets problems this year, but I can assure you there were many occasions when I did (see below), but as a Jets fan I continued to support the team and hope for his performances at the end of the year to be more like some of the great performances we had seen earlier in the season and while he was still with the Packers.
On the flipside, I didn’t see you blame any of the Jets problems on anything other than Favre. Again this is where we differed most. I blamed their failings on many factors (including Favre on occasion although, as you say, you missed this), whereas you were only ever prepared to blame it all on Favre.
Off the top of my head, here are some of the occasions where I criticized Favre:
Early in the season I wrote two parodies mocking the fact that some Jets fans were deifying Favre.
After the Chiefs game, I included a mock quote that criticized his performance and made fun of his age.
After the Miami game, I made a post joking that he tried to throw Mangini under the bus, but missed the bus and accidentally threw him under another bus going the other way.
After the Denver game I made fun of him for ignoring the coaching staff and throwing ill-advised interceptions in my South Park parody.
After the Bills game I made another joke about an ill-advised interception in my Star Wars parody and also made fun of the fact that he looked like he was upset when Ellis scored his TD.
After the Tennessee game I made fun of his excessive butt slapping.
After the 49ers game, I made fun of how slow he is.
After he was awful against the Raiders, I remarked that he must be hurt (and was right).
look how you spelled it at 5:32 p.m.
Nice try
Favre originally wanted to go to the Vikings, but Green Bay wouldn’t allow it.He was nervous about coming to the Jets because he didn’t know if he’d fit in.The guy gets stuck with an O-line that you can drive a bus thru and Wide receivers that stink.Due to the fact that defenses have to always be concerned with the pass when he’s the quarter back, Coles had some nice big holes to run thru. You give Favre a Donald driver and he’ll pick you apart all day long. When the wide outs hear footsteps and drop balls all season long ,what do you expect.
As for the int’s , ya some were bad, really bad, but a lot were tips too
With the addition of Favre the Jets became a real contender .when the top five offensive players only score 3 td’s in the last 3 games and the defense gets run over, well that’s not all Favre’s fault. 4-12 to 9-7 that’s a big change. With this O-line Peddington would have been on IR at game 4
